Message from the President Dear Members of the Class of '93: As I write, you have already graduated and your absence has created a void that will only partially be filled by the arriving Class of 1997. You were and are a special class begin ning with your nice post card to Mrs. Cot ter and me from the Mt. Washington COOT Trip through campus controversies on the I-Play System, removal of cigarette machines, the ROTC, the format f o r WMHB, whether the moose should replace the white mule as our mascot, and the Anna R. Kissed lecture from which men were excluded. In your senior year, students launched Project Inward, we had our first Hispanic and Asian Awareness Months, and we revised, at student urging, Colby's policies respecting religious holidays. In my Baccalaureate, I emphasized Col by's unyielding commitment to freedom of speech, but noted that there is an essential reciprocal value, the obligation to listen. We all beard Bob Dole, without interrup tion, and those who disagreed with his pol icies exercised their right of quiet, respect ful protest. In any event, Mrs. Cotter and I hope that you are well launched on your new careers - or in graduate school; that you have already joined your public library; and that there is a great book at your elbow at all times. Please keep in touch. We look for ward to seeing you back on Mayflower Hill soon and regularly. Sincerely,

WILLIAM R. COTTER PRESIDENT, COLBY COLLEGE

T

his is the 123rd volume of the Colby College

Oracle.

It is the largest and oldest student

publication at Colby. The 1993

Oracle

was

published by Herff-Jones Publishing Company in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The representative for the company was Mr. Charles Crosby and the account executive was Ms. Barbara Merson. The faculty advisor was Mr. Ben Jorgensen. The cover of the 1993

Oracle was designed by the

editor. The photograph was taLen by Mr. G.E. Kidder Smith for his booL

Looking at Arcliitecture. The font used

on the cover is Graphic Light. The spot color is gold (HJ #960) and the base material is lithicote. The Colby seal on the hacL lid is screened at 30%. The trim size of the booL is 8 1/2" x 11". The theme,

Tlie Pillars of tlie Community,

was

developed by the editor. It was inspired by the play of the same name by the Norwegian playwright HenriL Ibsen. The theme was carried through the booL in the form of copy and artwor1. The photographs came froID a variety of sources. Carrie Smith '93, Anne Sullivan '93, Teresa Tiangha '96, and Adam Zois '94 were the official

Oracle photographers.

Winter and spring sports and faculty were photographed by Mr. Scott Davis. COOT photos were made available courtesy of the Student Activities Office. Many pictures were obtained through the Communications Office courtesy of Mary Ellen Matava. Colby students were also encouraged to submit photos and many did. The paper for the book is 80 lb Calais stocL. The endsheets are grey CX-07. All copy is in Graphic Light with headlines scaled horizontally at 130%. The leaf logos were made using Zapf Dingbats. Layouts were designed using Aldus PageMaLer version 4.2 and printed on Apple Laserwriters. Any questions or comments about this or any

Oracle should be addressed to the Student Activities Office at Colby College. The opinions expressed herein are those of the editor and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Colby College students, faculty, or administration.

hen I first took on this position alone, J did it hecause of my unwillingness to rely on (and he let down hy) the work of others.

Although I edited this work myself, J would not have

succeeded without the generosity of some very important people. First, I would like to give a BIG thank you to the staff in the Student Activities Office. To TULLIO NIEMAN -for never letting me say that something was 'impossihle.' To SHEILA LIBBY -for answering <fuestions and taking messages. Most especially to BE

JORGENSE

-for handling prohlems

calmly and efficiently and answering my 1,001 questions. Thank you to my photographers -CARRIE, ANNE, TERESA, and ADAM. I appreciate all your hard work. I have never met people so willing to go out of their way to help an effort such as this. Thanks for sharing your talent. Thank you to CHARLIE CROSBY and BARBARA MERSO

of Herff-Jones Puhlisliing for your experience and

guidance. You have helped me to make this Oracle stand out from its predecessors with your helpful hints and know-how. Tliank you to the Couununications Department and most especially to MARY ELLEN MATAVA. Your kind ness and understanding is appreciated. Thank you to ALLE , BERT, and DAN in the Mailroom and Duplications.I am grateful for your optimism and help. Thank you to the Response for the use of its computer and to the Eclw for permission to use its articles. Thank you to all my friends for letting nie hounce my ideas off them. I appreciate all your lionest criticisms. The following people are not related to Colhy at all, hut they are directly responsihle for my sanity and success. To MELANIE and StLVIA -as long as yearhooks exist we11 always have something in common. To MM, RD, JS, CB AT, OL, and PS -for your friendship and interest. To MRS. JANET McCONVILLE -who introduced me to Ihsen. To MRS.JEANNE GIBBONS -for teachlng me tliat it is important to take time to play. To MR. ELVIO DESOUSA -for giving me my first hig hreak. To P.C.C. '92 -for all the lessons ahout life, good and had. To CK, JF, CW, RO, DL, and JS -for an unforgettahle summer.
