There are three words that underline Toyota’s success in South Africa for more than 40 years: quality, durability and reliability. Maintaining leadership in a market as volatile as that of selling motor vehicles is a major challenge for any company as sales success tends to be cyclical. It is therefore unusual for one company to maintain a leadership position for a period as long as 30 consecutive years, which Toyota South Africa has achieved to date. Sustainability has been at the heart of Toyota’s business model since its inception seventy years ago. Toyota is committed to pursuing sustainability in three main areas namely technology, manufacturing and social & environmental contribution. The two pillars of continuous improvement and respect

for people underpin the Toyota Way, and are applied across all Toyota’s activities and relationships. In 2005 the Prius, combining an electric motor and a petrol engine, was introduced to the South African market and the vehicle delivers world class performances in terms of fuel efficiency, low emissions, drivability and quietness. The third generation Prius has recently been launched in South Africa and also scooped a Car of the Year Finalist nod. Taking inspiration from Toyota Motorsport, Toyota recently introduced Toyota Optimal Drive which aims to boost engine efficiency and economy with no compromise in power performance or driving pleasure. This technology is geared towards a healthier planet too as it reduces carbon footprint by lowering emissions.
Toyota South Africa is as much about contributing to the world we live in as it is about making and selling cars.

Honda has always been proactive and innovative in its approach to the reduction of atmospheric pollution. Honda also continues to expand gas-electric hybrid vehicle technology, and develop new, non fossil fuel energy sources, including the ultimate solution, the Honda FCX fuel cell vehicle. With this in mind Honda has begun operation of a next generation solar hydrogen station prototype at its US R&D centre in Los Angeles. The prototype is intended as a home refueling appliance capable of refilling fuel cell electric vehicles overnight. The Solar Hydrogen Station would replenish the hydrogen for a typical daily driving. Currently hybrid technologies are the most realistic path for CO2 reduction. By having an electric motor working together with a petrol engine, exhaust emissions are reduced and better fuel economy is achieved. Honda South Africa will be introducing two hybrid vehicles in 2010 – the Honda CR-Z, a two seater coupe as well as the Honda Insight.

The Greenest of the Green Thermguard is manufactured predominately from recycled newsprint. In the past, old newspapers were transported to landfill sites. Now they are turned into an insulation product that conserves energy. This provides a DOUBLE GREEN effect as waste paper that is dumped onto landfill sites will in time decompose and be responsible for tons of CO2 emissions. By recycling this waste paper to manufacture cellulose fibre insulation, not only will CO2 emissions be prevented at the dumpsites but an insulation product is created that conserves energy usage in the home, cutting down on the burning of fossil fuels used to generate this energy. THE MIELE DIFFERENCE MAKES
Anything else is a compromise Miele appliances deliver performance, efficiency and safety with minimal environmental impact. This goes way beyond the obvious. To start with, all Miele appliances achieve the highest possible efficiency ratings for energy and water consumption. Miele appliances are manufactured in Germany, where strict adherence to the relevant environmental management principles (DIN EO ISO 14001) is mandatory. Miele appliances are built to last for 20 years, this results in up to 4 times less environmental impact than conventional appliances through reduced landfill or dumping issues. Finally, all machines and components are constructed from the best possible materials for builtin reliability. Environmental law regulates the interaction of humanity with the rest of the biophysical (natural) environment to reduce the impact of human activity on both the environment and, ultimately, humanity itself. Attitudes toward environmental protection and management have changed over the past decade with climate change and the protection of the environment becoming increasingly important globally. With this complex and developing sector comes a greater need for legal counsel and advice and at ENS our experience and expertise relating to these stricter and ever-changing regulations enables us to assist clients in making informed and often critical decisions. As Africa’s largest law firm, our ability to cross reference with other business areas within the firm means we offer legal, tax, forensics and IP assistance in all areas pertaining to the environment.

Cartridge World is the world’s number 1 provider of great value, top quality, remanufactured printer cartridges. Offering massive savings on the price of replacement printer cartridges, we help millions of people to save money - and at the same time, we help them to do their bit for the environment. Almost all inkjet and laser cartridges can either be reused or remanufactured. Every year, millions of empty printer cartridges are needlessly thrown away into landfill sites. At Cartridge World, we are doing everything we can to reduce that impact. We provide an alternative so that our customers can opt for printer cartridges which support sustainable development for our planet’s precious resources. Here are a few good reasons why it is so important to refill not landfill your empty printer cartridges: • In 2008, 1.9 billion printer cartridges were used worldwide. • If stacked end-to-end, all of the printer cartridges used in 2008 would measure 224,000 km. That is more than 5 and half times around the world. • Laser printer cartridges account for over 90% of all throwaway cartridges. • A laser cartridge thrown into landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose. • Every remanufactured cartridge is one less cartridge going to landfill - and that is a choice you can feel proud of. The carbon footprint of a remanufactured cartridge is approximately 50% lower than that for a new cartridge. ** **Source: An independent study performed by Best Foot Forward and commissioned by the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse, 2008.

maximising natural light to innovative water saving and insulation technology. Besides the fact that environmental management forms an integral part of MCSA’s strategy, it is vital in maintaining the group’s social responsibility investment (SRI) index rating on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). It was in the top 16 companies across the board in terms of carbon emission performance in 2009. In 2008 MCSA was among the top 10 JSE-listed companies in the lower carbon sector, making it the best performer in the healthcare industry in reducing its carbon footprint. Last year MCSA achieved a reduction of 5.45 per cent in carbon emissions, which is ahead of the global target of 3.62 per cent. Initiatives built around ISO standards have proven successful and a staff awareness campaign, related to energy and water savings across 13 hospitals, has been a major component contributing around R363-million to the MCSA bottom line. Through implementing systems and awareness projects, Medi-Clinic Southern Africa is broadening its commitment to quality care to include a culture of environmental responsibility. Medi-Clinic SA has developed a comprehensive process that involves implementing sustainable environmental management systems at all 52 of its hospitals by the end of 2012

It also saves air-conditioning running costs. The EPS has excellent thermal qualities, thus reducing the overall energy consumption of the building. AN ECO-OFFICE WILL HELP ACHIEVE: Economic sustainability - through cost cutting Social sustainability - through creating a better workplace Ecological sustainability - through reducing ecological footprints in the workplace. BENEFITS OF AN ECO OFFICE: Cost savings: An Eco-Office can significantly reduce its costs through more efficient use of energy and materials such as electricity, paper and water. Care for the environment: An Eco-Office helps to ensure the long-term sustainability of the environment. Building values for a sustainable future: the involvement of an organisation’s staff in creating an Eco-Office raises awareness among staff and the broader community. More attractive workplace: The safe, healthy and pleasant environment of an Eco-Office can promote improved job satisfaction and increased motivation. Enhances the company’s compliance with environmental legislation.

ECO-OFFICE ACTIONS Rethink - think about creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, pleasant and efficient office environment. Ask yourself questions such as the following: • How do we limit risks from chemicals and radiation? • Where can we find “greener” products and services? • Which cleaning agents are odour-free, environmentally friendly and safe to use? • How can we improve the general office environment? • How do we make the best use of the space and natural light? • What colours would be best? • How can we promote strong supportive working relationships between colleagues? • Which other environmentally concerned organisations can we work with? • Who would be willing to closely monitor the work environment, and help promote a culture of environmental care and responsibility within your organisation? Reduce: • Choose monitors and equipment with low radiation emissions • Work not less than 60 centimetres from computer monitors • Take rest breaks to minimise eyestrain and stress • Only print when it’s absolutely necessary.

Reuse: • Before buying new office furniture, see if your existing office furniture can be refurbished (it may be less expensive than buying new and could be better for the environment). Repair: • Keep all equipment in good repair, it gives staff fewer problems, saves time and causes less stress. • An improved workplace and relationships, as well as diet and exercise, will enhance physical and mental health. The same principles of rethink, reduce, recycle and repair can be applied to the use of energy, water, paper and equipment in our environment. FIVE STEPS TO AN ECO-OFFICE 1. Audit Examine your current practices and identify how they can be improved from an environmentally point of view. Check how you comply with legislation requirements and how to make the office environment safer, healthier, and more inspiring for employees. 2. Plan Agree and adopt an Eco-Office policy. Agree on Eco-Office objectives for the implementation of the policy. Develop the Eco-Office objectives into a coherent plan of activities. Identify and agree on specific responsibilities associated with each activity. Agree on clear achievement targets and time frames for each activity. Involve colleagues in developing the plan, and seek the agreement of all staff, especially senior management. 3. Communicate Involve colleagues in the development of the Eco-Office programme to

ensure their support and ownership. Discuss the benefits and disadvantages of proposed changes with everyone. Let people know the simple ways in which they can contribute. Keep your colleagues informed about progress to ensure their continued interest and commitment 4. Do Implement your plan! Implement the simpler activities first. Make these a part of everyone’s daily routine as this makes them easier to accept and do. 5 Review Monitoring and reviewing progress is essential to staying on track. The Green Star Rating covers the design, construction and operation of the building. The main elements that contributed to the four star rating include full economy air conditioning system, efficient light fittings, black water treatment system, an efficient waste recycling system and the fact that the building would achieve a 30% energy saving when compared with a conventional building. Throughout the process Coffey Projects has lead the team to meet objectives on time, coordinated and chaired design workshops to bring the design into the documentation and generally ensured the client’s needs were being met (budget, time and quality). 13 Saddle Drive, Woodmead Office Park, Johannesburg Tel: +27 (0)11 656 0950 l Fax: +27 (0)11 656 9523 Cell: +27 (0)82 079 4553 Email: andre_krogh@coffey.com l www.coffey.com

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Ruach Consulting is a green design, energy efficiency and renewable energy consultancy. We focus on understanding your energy processes and related requirements. This may simply be how your building consumes energy or include various energy processes in the execution of business, including service and manufacturing energy processes. The key is objectivity, to design the appropriate solutions, independent of one particular technology or product brand, to optimise efficiency and reduce your carbon footprint. From passive or low energy building design to energy processes, we find the best fit solution (suite of products) to meet your energy process requirements. We SALUTE NEDBANK’s EARTHLY “GREEN” SOUTH AFRICAN VISION for commitment to a healthy work environment, and their insistence that all carpet tiles installed at their Sandton “Phase2” premises are manufactured IN South Africa and are “Greenstar IEQ-13” compliant. This “Green - Keep it South African” vision is directly responsible for Dyemension Dynamix urgently researching and acquiring the necessary knowledge, technology, skills and equipment for production and the resultant “Greenstar IEQ-13” accreditation on all of our products including the Nedbank carpet tiles used in “Phase 2”. In addition to creating a healthier, sustainable environment the opening of export opportunities with compliant South African products is an important added benefit. This “Green - Keep it South African” vision is appreciated and seen as a genuine display of Nedbank’s corporate responsibility in creating opportunities and jobs, by ensuring local products enjoy all the benefits of, and are equivalent to, internationally available “state of the art” products worldwide.

Port Elizabeth The earth receives as much energy from sunlight in 20 days as is believed to be stored in the Earth’s entire reserves of coal, oil and natural gas. Once installed, solar photovoltaics produce electricity without the use of fossil fuels and no environmental pollution. Largescale photovoltaic parks provide an excellent ROI over a 15 to 20 year period. Telecom Techniques Solar, with its German partner Solarworld, is equipped to design, install and operate such large scale solar parks on behalf of companies and businesses including Game Reserves. 21 Burt Drive, Newton Park, Port Elizabeth Tel: +27 (0)41 365 5073 l Fax: +27 (0)41 364 0059 Email: info@teltec.co.za www.teltec.co.za
