“Coming to college has taught me to see a lot more than just what’s in front of me. I haven’t just learned about Maths and Science in college, I’ve learned a lot about me. I’m amazed how many things I’ve enjoyed learning about. Everyone cares about how you’re doing, so if you have any problems there are so many places that you can turn to for help.

“Until college I wouldn’t say I had that much confidence, but now I’m doing presentations, talking in front of others, leading group discussions and working in teams.

“I want a career that’s going to take me places so I’m going on to an Earth Sciences degree at Oxford and college has played a big part in helping me get there.”

“When I started college, Maths wasn’t my forte but with the help of my tutors they helped me get back up there and excel in Maths which is essential in Engineering. Be prepared for a lot of hard work but it can be a really good time as long as you get your head down – and you get a lot of rewards out of it.”

“I’d rather work with my hands as I’m not really the academic type, but I wanted to get the proper training to be a skilled tradesman rather than just a labourer on a site.

“The classes in college are quite small so it’s very relaxed and everyone gets involved. I really enjoy independent research as it means I can bring my own angle to my work helping me stand out a bit more.

“As a bricklayer you get paid by how many bricks or blocks you lay so my course is helping me to do top quality work, as quickly as I can, which will ultimately help me earn more money. After my first year I want to get an Apprenticeship to do Levels 2 and 3, and eventually start my own company.”

“I’ve always being interested in the weather – how it’s formed and how it affects things so I’d love the super power of predicting localised weather. I’m taking my passion for weather to university where I’m going to study Physical Geography and I can’t wait.”

If you need help choosing the right course you can get advice from our Admissions team, or come along to one of our open events and speak to lecturers about which course is right for you.

Access to Higher Education A university degree is achievable even if you don’t have any previous traditional qualifications. An Access to HE course will help you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to prepare you for university, without any assumptions about what you may have done in the past. You can choose from a range of pathways to get you onto your chosen degree course, and then that dream job. You’ll learn how to approach study and the different techniques that you’ll need to succeed. Many people are nervous when they start an Access to HE course, particularly if they haven’t been in a classroom for some time. Our tutors are aware of this and take it into account in their teaching; you won’t be ‘thrown in at the deep end’ or tested on things which you forgot years ago. Though you can expect the course to be challenging, the whole purpose of an Access to HE course is to help you to be successful. We also offer a Pre-Access course which focuses on academic skills to enable you to progress to an Access course.

Art students express their creative side in th e local community Student artists teamed up with a local housing developer to cre ate ‘gallery space’ at Newport’s Loftus Garden Village – a new community created in the Maindee area of the city. The students’ bold and colo urful naturethemed designs were par t of a project inspired by the new develop ment. They took their inspiration from the communal gardens designed and managed by Frances Hope. Mark Trounce, project ma nager at the new garden village, said: “We are thrilled with the quality and variety of artwork that the students have produced. The artwork not only brightens up the hoa rdings around the construction site, but also demonstrates how Loftus Garden Village con tinues to capture the imagination of young people, bringing a rural feel to the heart of New port.”

Brickwork skills on show at the City of Newport Campus

Construction

Construction students showcased their brickwork skills during a college competition, which saw approximately 1,800 bricks turned into decorative walls. The winner was Sam Connolly, second place was scooped by Lawley O’Keefe and in third place was Darren Cyphus. Lecturer Carl Curtis said: “The government says we need to build more houses and it is a skill that you can take wherever you want. These types of competitions are good for your CV and companies are always looking for apprentices.”

What next? Many of our construction students go straight into employment or an Apprentic eship in a trade but you may also have the option to an HNC/D in Construction and the Built Environm ent or Civil Engineering at Coleg Gwent, or a construction related course at another universit y.

Lecturer Philip Jones further outlined the opportunities for bricklayers: “It is probably the highest paid trade in Wales with an average wage of £440 per thousand bricks laid; on average you can lay 3,000 bricks a week so you could be earning £1,300 a week. Two of my Level 3 students are working in England and earn £1,700 a week!”

Students build luxury accommodation for feathered friends

the ducks needed a safe haven and a brand new duck house was the perfect solution.

Students revamped the City of Newport Campus’s duck pond in a bid to improve the enviro nment and encourage wildlife to the area, with a luxury duck house as the crowning glory of their work. The college’s pond has been a focal point for Independent Living Skills (ILS) students to put into practice the skills they’ve learned over the year. Students and staff at the college had noticed that the family of ducks that had taken up residence at the pond were being attacked and driven away by seagulls, so it was decid ed that

ILS students teamed up with Multiskills students to build the duck house. Lectu rer Tim Chaytor-Jackson spoke of the students’ efforts: “The students worked tirelessly in helpin g to produce the duck house and the results speak for themselves. They have achieved so much through the entire process; self-confidence, the ability to work as a team and communica tion skills are but a few of the skills and attrib utes that have been enhanced. The overall succe ss of the project is testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved.”

Students take a busman’s holiday to Scotland To learn more about why so many tourists visit historic and cultural cities, Travel and Tourism students spent two days in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The group discovered a large amount about the city in a very short time visiting Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura, Princes Street and Edinburgh Zoo. The students also walked the Royal Mile to see the Parliament building and the Palace of Holyrood. The visit started with a flight to Edinburgh from Bristol airport. Here they experienced the airport and how the airlines work. On arrival at Edinburgh airport, the students experienced the city’s brand new tram system that took them into the heart of Edinburgh. Head of School Helen Lawless said: “The visit has enabled the group to complete assignment work to a higher standard and examine first hand several aspects of the tourism industry which is so vital to our economy.”

What next? Many of our Travel and Tourism learners go on to study at universities across the UK, on courses such as International Hospitality. You could stay local and do a university course in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Coleg Gwent. Others put what they’ve learned into practice in jobs such as Travel Agents, Events Assistants and Hotel Receptionists.
