Learning in Welsh or bilingually The Welsh language and culture of Wales is important to us. We encourage all members of the college community, Welsh speaking or not, to understand the importance of the Welsh language as a personal and educational skill as well as an employability skill for the future. Currently we offer: • The opportunity to study some modules of a selection of courses bilingually • The opportunity to study Welsh as a second language • Welsh language and bilingual study support through ‘HWB Cymraeg’ and social activities through ‘Clwb Cymraeg’ And much more – see full details at www.coleggwent.ac.uk/cymrycg
It’s all about
and
Maths + English = A bright future for YOU Maths and English aren’t always everyone’s favourite subjects in school and it may not be obvious straight away how fractions, algebra and Pythagoras; semi colons, adverbs and the correct use of apostrophes will matter in your job in the future. But they will - we use maths and English every day without even realising it. Most employers and universities want applicants to have good numeracy and literacy skills and young people who lack these vital skills are more likely to be unemployed for longer. At Coleg Gwent, you will have the opportunity to develop your literacy and numeracy skills by studying appropriate qualifications alongside your academic or vocational qualification. What next? A Levels open the door to many options. Over 80% of our students in 2014/15 went on to higher level study at university or at Coleg Gwent, or you may prefer to use your qualifications to get a job or do an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship.
Did you know…? The Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone is the south east Wales hub for the Seren Network which supports Wales’s brightest sixth form students. The network stretches and challenges students to give them the best possible education and make the most of their talents and the opportunities open to them.
Shaunna Ryan, 18 from Newbridge, couldn’t stop smiling when she got her results. She got A* in PE and As in Psychology and ICT and is now at Cardiff University doing a degree in sport science: “The tutors were incredibly supportive throughout the last two years and the facilities for both IT and sport were excellent. The college is a great place to learn. If you’re willing to put the work in your tutors will work with you to help you achieve your potential. My tutors were amazing; they couldn’t have done any more to help and support me.” 10

Access to Higher Education A university degree is achievable even if you don’t have any previous qualifications. An Access to HE course will help you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to prepare you for university, without any assumptions about what you may have done in the past. You can choose from a range of pathways to get you onto your chosen degree course, and then that dream job. You’ll learn how to approach study and the different techniques that you’ll need to succeed. Many people are nervous when they start an Access to HE course, particularly if they haven’t been in a classroom for some time. Our tutors are aware of this and take it into account in their teaching; you won’t be ‘thrown in at the deep end’ or tested on things which you forgot years ago. Though you can expect the course to be challenging, the whole purpose of an Access to HE course is to help you to be successful. We also offer a Pre-Access course which focuses on academic skills to enable you to progress to an Access course.

Access to Humanities lecturer Mike Fitzgerald’s advice for those thinking of applying: “Access is perfect for anyone who feels like they want to progress but don’t have the academic qualifications to match their experience or their ambition. People would be surprised how many of those serving their community – social workers, primary school teachers, people working in criminal justice – found their path through Access years after they left school. Your potential never leaves you and it’s never too late to try something new.” www.coleggwent.ac.uk

Owen missed quite a lot of school as he’d been wheelchair bound due to ME/CFS so he didn’t achieve his science GCSE. Undeterred however, Owen resat the exams at a local school alongside his Extended Diploma in Applied Science in college, and even started AS Level Chemistry in his second year. Owen achieved D*D*D* and is now studying veterinary science at the Royal Veterinary College. He’d recommend trying to get work experience at college and believes his, at a vets and with the APHA and RSPCA, helped him gain a deeper understanding and real experience that helped with his university application. 16

If you’d prefer a career in health and social care you’ll find out first-hand what it is like to be involved in the sector from our lecturers who have had experience in many different health and social care roles. Mitchell Harper, 24, did a musical theatre course and now works across the world as a professional performer and choreographer:
“Choose a course based on the career you want and then go full steam ahead! If you work hard in all of your subjects, especially the ones that are your weakest, you’ll give yourself the best chance of success, and you must be proactive, outgoing and dedicated. “College played a huge role in helping me get where I am today – but it wasn’t an easy ride. If you go to the gym and don’t work out, you won’t get the results. College is similar; you can’t just turn up and expect to qualify – you need to put the work in, take full advantage of lecturers’ support and advice, and make the most of the live performances in college as they look great on your CV or UCAS application.”

Coleg Gwent is one of the largest and most successful colleges in Wales, and we’re also your local college. In 2016 the Welsh Government’s Learner Outcomes Report rated us the top performing college in Wales for vocational courses, and joint top for academic courses such as A Levels. We offer more than qualifications We’re committed to developing confident and ambitious young people, and extra-curricular activities are a great way of doing this. So alongside their course, learners can get involved in sport, fundraising and volunteering opportunities, equipping them with life and work skills, as well as helping them meet new people – it also looks great on their CV or UCAS application. Student safety and wellbeing is our priority All our staff undertake safeguarding training and our extensive support network ensures they are safe and have access to support services that meet their individual needs. We insist on high standards of behaviour supported by our college Code of Conduct. As much support as you get in school We offer excellent support for all students. Every student has their own personal tutor to support and guide them through their time at college. They complete an initial assessment when they enrol to identify any support needs so we can provide them with appropriate support for things like literacy and numeracy, either in the classroom or outside of classes. Students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are provided with support, specialist advice and resources to help them achieve their best. We offer specialist one-to-one tuition for dyslexic learners and those with other specific learning difficulties, as well as putting in place access arrangements for examinations. • • • •
An additional support assistant or communication support worker in class Help with appropriate assistive technology Basic skills taught by specialist skills coaches Extra pastoral support or specialist careers advice
We’ll work in partnership with you We monitor all full time students’ progress and attendance through electronic individual learning plans (eILPs) which we use to keep you informed through parents’ evenings and regular reports. We encourage students to share access to their eILP with their parents/ carers. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s Personal Tutor, their Head of School or Head of Learner Services. Learner Services will be happy to provide you with any contact details. If you still have any queries please get in touch with Learner Services at the campus – we’re keen to ensure your son/daughter’s time at college goes smoothly and equips them for their next step.

Learning with us can benefit everyone If your son or daughter is in full time education, whether in school or the college, you’ll still be entitled to any benefits you’re currently receiving. Students can also apply for assistance through the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to provide some support during their studies. Apprentices may be considered to be employed, rather than have student status; therefore, if your son or daughter is considering an Apprenticeship, you would need to discuss the possible impact on benefit entitlement.
With 11 excellent passes at GCSE, Jake Smallwood had loads of options for his next step. But when Jake’s mum Emma found out he was thinking about going to college her first reaction was concern, soon allayed by finding out more information at open days and talking to college staff. “The stigma that college is for those not bright enough to do A Levels is outdated,” says Emma. Her initial concerns that Jake wouldn’t be challenged and wouldn’t achieve his potential have been proved ill-founded: “In fact, Jake is more inspired, motivated and ambitious than ever.” Jake is doing an Extended Diploma in Interactive Media – a subject he wouldn’t have been able to specialise in at sixth form – which will get him the UCAS points he needs to go to university. Emma explains: “I thought the preferred route to university was A Levels, similar to when I was in school, but in fact the Extended Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels and accepted as such in the workplace and in Higher Education.” It’s not just the subject Jake enjoys, but the college atmosphere, and Emma has seen a difference in his confidence since starting college last September: “Jake says the learning environment at college is more relaxed than school as he’s trusted to get on with his work, and he says the classroom is more like a design studio with all the latest technology and a professional atmosphere. Jake is much more confident and self-assured and he puts it down to his time in college.” Emma’s not the only one pleased with Jake’s progress: “I’ve been to parents’ evenings and the lecturers are impressed, not only by what Jake produces in college, but his enthusiasm – he’s always working on a project outside of college as he’s so keen to get as much experience as possible – he almost turned down a holiday he’s that dedicated!” The relaxed environment doesn’t mean Jake isn’t getting the attention and support he needs from his tutors, and Emma thinks the relationship he has with them has made him realise his own potential and believe in himself: “They’re so supportive of all of their students. They want Jake to succeed as much as he and I do.” Emma is a strong advocate of parents considering all options for their children. “Coleg Gwent offers more choice, just as much, if not more support, and a learning environment that brings out the best in young people.” 67
