“Since starting college I’ve come out of my shell and I’m a lot more confident, which I think is down to the support I’ve been given, the encouragement I’ve had to achieve my potential and the relationships I’ve got with tutors – feeling like you’re on the same level makes you more comfortable to ask for help. “My classes are a lot more interactive than they were at school. Rather than a teacher just talking and the class making notes, everyone contributes to discussions.”

Hands on experience to prepare you for work or uni. Our extensive range of vocational courses gives you practical skills as well as the qualifications to get in to your chosen industry. Extended Diplomas can also secure you a place at uni.
“I didn’t enjoy school; it’s not for everyone. I struggled with some of the work as I didn’t enjoy the subjects. But being able to focus on a subject you’re passionate about makes you more driven to succeed and learning becomes less of a chore and actually enjoyable. “The best bit about college is being able to get practical, hands on experience. Not just because it’s fun, but it gives you relevant experience to prepare you for work. “I didn’t realise you can go to uni if you don’t do A Levels but the Extended Diploma has earned me the UCAS points I needed to get a place at a top university.”

We know that full time learning isn’t for everyone. If you’d prefer to go straight into employment but want to achieve qualifications alongside your new skills and experience, then an Apprenticeship could be for you. A real job Put your new skills into practice in your workplace, and come to college, usually one day a week.
A real qualification
The Apprenticeship, Traineeship and Jobs Growth Wales Programmes, led by the Welsh Government, are supported by the European Social Fund.
A national qualification recognised by employers around the world.
A real pay cheque Not only do you get industry experience, workplace skills and qualifications, you get paid!
A real future Apprenticeships give you the skills employers want, which can open doors in the future.
At Coleg Gwent you can do Apprenticeships in: • Automotive Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Construction
• Electrical • Plumbing • Welding
“My Apprenticeship is a win-win opportunity for me and my employer – I’ve got a job where I’m getting practical skills and a qualification, and my employer is training me in the skills they need so they have a qualified mechanic through cost effective training. “I absolutely love my job. I get to work on high end cars like Ferraris, Bentleys and Aston Martins – servicing them, replacing head gaskets and other technical work. And I really enjoy being in college where we learn the theory behind the technical work – how the electrics work, how engines and transmission works – things like that. “I want to get qualified to Level 3 then hopefully I’ll stay at Forza GB for a few years. My longer term plan is to join the RAF or the Navy as an engineer which I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m hoping my experience and qualifications as an apprentice will improve my chances of getting in.”
Jay Barrett, Level 2 Motor Vehicle Employer: Forza GB

Most employers and universities want applicants with GSCE Maths and English/Welsh First Language grades at A* to C, and young people who lack these qualifications are more likely to be unemployed for longer. So if you didn’t get the grades you wanted in GCSE Maths and English/Welsh First Language, you’ll get a second chance to improve them alongside your course. What does this mean for you? • If you have a GCSE grade C or above in English/Welsh First Language or Maths, you don’t have to study these subjects again, if you don’t want to • If you got a grade D at GCSE you’ll study and re-sit it • If you got an E or below at GCSE, you’ll be assessed and placed on a pre-GCSE programme to help you improve your literacy and/or numeracy skills, so you’re able to progress to GCSE in the next academic year.
9
Whether you’re studying A Levels or a vocational course, you can enhance your learning by studying the Welsh Baccalaureate – or Welsh Bacc. It’s linked to your main course, but gives you extra experience, confidence and transferable skills which look really good on your CV and can improve your prospects at university or in employment.
The Welsh Bacc will inspire you to fulfil your potential and help you along your career path. It has been developed to give you the skills universities and employers say young people need for learning, work and life. You’ll take part in a series of practical challenges and an individual project focussing on developing these skills: • • • • • • •
Literacy Numeracy Digital literacy Critical thinking and problem solving Planning and organisation Creativity and innovation Personal effectiveness
Individual Project You’ll do an independent, research-based assignment on an individually selected subject to produce a written investigation or an artefact/product supported by written research.
Enterprise and Employability Challenge You’ll generate business ideas and write a business proposal to put your ideas into action – it’s great experience that will give you a good understanding of business and prepare you for the world of work.
Global Citizenship Challenge Your challenge could relate to world issues such as the environment and sustainability, human rights, diversity and social justice – to build your awareness of issues that impact on modern society and on you as an individual.
Community Challenge You’ll be set a challenge by your local community. Depending on your course, it could be anything from pamper sessions at a residential home to an art exhibition for a charity event. It will give you great experience and a chance to perfect your skills – whilst helping your local area.

Why should my son/daughter study at Coleg Gwent? Coleg Gwent is one of the largest and most successful colleges in Wales, and we’re also your local college. In our last Estyn inspection (2014), we matched the best performance of any college in Wales and highlighted many strengths including: • Excellent results • One of the top three performing colleges in Wales
What other opportunities do you offer? We’re committed to developing confident and ambitious young people, and extra-curricular activities are a great way of doing this. So alongside their course, your son/ daughter will be able to get involved in sport, fundraising and volunteering opportunities. This equips young people with life and work skills, helps them meet new people and looks great on their CV.
Will my family continue to receive benefits if my child leaves school to go to college? Yes, if your son or daughter is in full time education whether in school or the college. Students can also apply for assistance through the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to provide some support during their studies. Apprentices may be considered to be employed, rather than have student status; therefore, if your son or daughter is considering an apprenticeship scheme, you would need to discuss the possible impact on benefit entitlement.
Who will ‘look out’ for my son/daughter whilst they’re in college? Student safety and wellbeing is our priority. All our staff undertake safeguarding training and our extensive support network ensures they are safe and have access to support services that meet their individual needs. We insist on high standards of behaviour supported by our college Code of Conduct.
11
What support is available for my son/daughter? We offer excellent support for all students. Every student has their own personal tutor to support and guide them through their time at college. They complete an initial assessment when they enrol to identify any support needs so we can provide them with appropriate support for things like literacy and numeracy, either in the classroom or outside of classes. Students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are provided with support, specialist advice and resources to help them achieve their best. We offer specialist one-to-one tuition for dyslexic learners and those with other specific learning difficulties, as well as putting in place access arrangements for examinations. • An additional support assistant or communication support worker in class • Help with appropriate assistive technology • Basic skills taught by specialist skills coaches • Extra pastoral support or specialist careers advice
As a parent, how can I be involved? We monitor all full time students’ progress and attendance through electronic individual learning plans (eILPs) which we use to keep you informed through parents’ evenings and regular reports. We encourage students to share access to their eILP with their parents/ carers. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s Personal Tutor, their Head of School or Head of Learner Services. Learner Services will be happy to provide you with any contact details. If you still have any queries please get in touch with Learner Services at the campus – we’re keen to ensure your son/daughter’s time at college goes smoothly and equips them for their next step.
Emma Smallwood With 11 excellent passes at GCSE, Jake Smallwood had loads of options for his next step. But when Jake’s mum Emma found out he was thinking about going to college her first reaction was concern, soon allayed by finding out more information at Open Days and talking to College staff. “The stigma that college is for those not bright enough to do A Levels is outdated,” says Emma. Her initial concerns that Jake wouldn’t be challenged and wouldn’t achieve his potential have been proved ill-founded: “In fact, Jake is more inspired, motivated and ambitious than ever.”
Jake is doing an Extended Diploma in Interactive Media – a subject he wouldn’t have been able to specialise in at sixth form – which will get him the UCAS points he needs to go to university. Emma explains: “I thought the preferred route to university was A Levels, similar to when I was in school, but in fact the Extended Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels and accepted as such in the workplace and in Higher Education.”
It’s not just the subject Jake enjoys, but the college atmosphere, and Emma has seen a difference in his confidence since starting college last September: “Jake says the learning environment at college is more relaxed than school as he’s trusted to get on with his work, and he says the classroom is more like a design studio with all the latest technology and a professional atmosphere. Jake is much more confident and self-assured and he puts it down to his time in college.”
Emma’s not the only one pleased with Jake’s progress: “I’ve been to parents’ evenings and the lecturers are impressed, not only by what Jake produces in college, but his enthusiasm – he’s always working on a project outside of college as he’s so keen to get as much experience as possible – he almost turned down a holiday he’s that dedicated!”
The relaxed environment doesn’t mean Jake isn’t getting the attention and support he needs from his tutors, and Emma thinks the relationship he has with them has made him realise his own potential and believe in himself: “They’re so supportive of all of their students. They want Jake to succeed as much as he and I do.”
Emma is a strong advocate of parents considering all options for their children. “Coleg Gwent offers more choice, just as much, if not more support, and a learning environment that brings out the best in young people.” 12
The Welsh language and culture of Wales is important to us. We encourage all members of the college community, Welsh speaking or not, to understand the importance of the Welsh language as a personal and educational skill as well as an employability skill for the future.
We’re always working to provide a wider service to our Welsh speaking learners. Currently we offer: • The opportunity to study some modules of a selection of courses bilingually • A Welsh speaking tutor for some of your modules if you’re on a bilingual course • Resources in Welsh for bilingual modules • Support for using Welsh in your assignments and coursework • The option to write assignments and undertake assessments and exams in Welsh* • Provision to access tutorials in Welsh • The opportunity to study Welsh as a second language • Welsh medium placements and work experience • Welsh medium enrichment activities • Welsh medium guest speakers • Bilingual glossaries and vocabulary • The opportunity to gain your essential or key skills bilingually or in Welsh • Welsh language and bilingual study support through ‘HWB Cymraeg’ • Welsh medium and bilingual social activities and trips through ‘Clwb Cymraeg’ *Only when the examination board can provide examination papers in Welsh
