1 Our inspiring lecturers have excellent

up-to-date subject knowledge and extensive teaching experience as well as notable industry experience – so not only are you learning from the best, they can give you good advice on how to find work when you graduate. Our smaller class sizes mean you will receive excellent personal support from lecturing staff and from our dedicated support staff – and our local campuses are friendly and welcoming.

2

Our strong partnerships with the University of South Wales, Aberystwyth University, the University of Worcester and Pearson mean that you will have access to all the resources you need to succeed. If you successfully complete a course awarded by one of our partner universities, you’ll receive a certificate awarded by the university and you will be invited to a graduation ceremony.

03

3

We’re local, so you’ll save money on travel and accommodation and you won’t incur the cost of studying away from home. You’ll also have more time that could be spent with family, friends or at work.

4

Our courses usually involve learning in the workplace as well as at college so you’ll get career-oriented skills and specific industry experience that employers look for, boosting your chances of finding your dream career.

5

Our wide range of subjects and study options mean you can study full time or part time, to fit in with work or other commitments. Our HE qualifications are professionally relevant and could give you the competitive edge, leading to increased earning potential, greater opportunities and a more rewarding career.

Making sure you’re on the right course is important to us as it can influence your next step and your longer term future.

Foundation Degrees Foundation Degrees combine academic study with workplace/work-related learning. They are broadly equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree. They are designed with a particular area of work in mind, with the help of organisations from that sector, so you’re getting the skills that employers look for. Typically, you’ll get the chance to learn in the workplace as well as in the classroom. Once you’ve achieved a Foundation Degree, you can use your qualification and work experience to find employment, or you can ‘top up’ your qualification to a full Bachelor’s Degree. This usually involves an extra year or two of study.

Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) HNCs and HNDs are work-related courses and are highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas. While Bachelor’s Degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNCs and HNDs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular vocation. Higher National qualifications don’t just qualify you for work. Some HNCs allow direct entry into the second year of a degree programme,

and many HNDs allow direct entry to the third year of an Honours Degree. HNCs or HNDs can also give you access to a number of professional bodies. So whether you want to go straight into a job, or continue your studies, getting a Higher National can be a great place to start.

Degree ‘Top-ups’ A Top-up degree is the equivalent to the final year of undergraduate study, giving you a Bachelor’s level qualification. As the name suggests, these courses enable you to ‘topup’ an existing qualification, whether that’s a Foundation degree or another relevant qualification, like an HND. Every course has its own entry requirements, so check the course you’re interested in to find out exactly what you’ll need to be able to apply, in addition make sure you check your eligibility for continued student finance.

Professional qualifications Professional qualifications focus on improving your ability to succeed in a particular occupation, which is ideal if you have a clear career objective and want to gain valuable on-the-job experience. Many careers demand that you possess a professional qualification, but in other cases, professional qualifications are not essential, but they allow you to achieve greater competence in your field and improve your prospects for progression.

A Higher Education course is an investment in your future. And whilst there are costs associated with learning, whether it’s time you invest or your tuition fees, you may be eligible for financial support, which means it could cost less than you think.

Tuition fees for home undergraduate and PGCE study for 2018/19 are currently under review in England and Wales. Based on the latest information available to us, the below fees will apply for the academic year 2018-19. The Welsh Government is still to confirm arrangements for 2019/20 onwards, which means that for students starting in September 2018 onwards, tuition fees may rise for any successive years of study, mapped according to any inflation-linked maximum tuition fees permitted by the Welsh Government. We will inform all applicants and students of the fee levels for 2019/20 and any inflationlinked increases for successive years of study as soon as confirmation is received from Welsh Government, and we will publish any updates on the college website.

05

Courses accredited by the University of South Wales and Aberystwyth University: Foundation Degrees, HNCs and HNDs accredited by the University of South Wales and Aberystwyth University are £7,500 per year*.

Courses accredited by the University of Worcester: Foundation Degrees accredited by this university are £9,000 per year*

PcET (Post-compulsory Education and Training): In 2018/19 tuition fees for PcET courses were £620 per 20 credit module* – you would usually study 60 credits in a year.

Additional costs Your course may have additional costs which can be mandatory or optional. These costs are additional to tuition fees and need to be paid for by students to be able to fully participate and complete your programme of study. This covers such things as equipment, trips, placements and DBS checks. Each programme has different additional costs involved which you’ll find in the course information on our website.

When you are studying Higher Education there will be two main costs – tuition fees and living costs – both of which you can get financial support for.

You will need to apply for funding before starting your course, the sooner you do this the better, and do remember, you will have to reapply for funding every academic year.

Tuition Fee Loan †

To find out more details of your funding entitlement visit the Student Finance Wales or Student Finance England (depending where you live) website.

Whether you are studying full time or part time you can apply for a tuition fee loan. This is non-means tested and you can borrow up to the maximum amount to cover your fee charge each academic year (up to a maximum of £9000)*.

Help with living costs † (a combination of grant and loan): Some maintenance funding is based on the level of household income. This can be for your parents, or if you are over 25 years old or meet other criteria which mean you are classed as an independent student. If you are living as a couple, then your partner’s income would usually be taken into account. The amount of maintenance support you receive will also depend upon where you live during your studies, i.e. whether you live away from home or with your parents.

You may be able to get extra funding if you have adults or children who are financially dependent on you. This extra funding can include: • Adult Dependants’ Grant (ADG) • Childcare Grant (CCG) • Parents’ Learning Allowance (PLA) † subject to eligibility/availability

*Figures correct at time of print and may be subject to change. Please check the Student Finance Wales/England website for the latest information before you apply.

We don’t beat around the bush; we plant the seeds, nurture your skills and let your talents grow All employers look for experience and you’ll get plenty of it on our animal and land based foundation degrees at Usk Campus.

Animal and veterinary students will work in the small animal care centre, which is home to a whole host of animals, from rabbits and guinea pigs to more exotic species including reptiles and donkeys, as well as our Blue Cross cat rehoming centre.

We have well established courses with the University of South Wales and we’ve recently added two Aberystwyth University courses to our portfolio in equine studies and agriculture. No matter what course you choose, you’ll have access to all the facilities you’d expect to find in industry.

Equestrian students will have full use of our indoor and outdoor schools, and livery facilities, so you’ll learn how to care for and manage horses, examine their behaviour and learn about the industry on campus. You’ll learn from expert lecturers who have vast knowledge in their sector, as well as experience so they’ll be able to give you advice on how to find a job when you graduate.

Our working farm offers agriculture students the chance to work with industry standard machinery and our cattle and sheep herds providing you with the skills, knowledge and experience you’ll take with you into the world of work.

“I love that I get hands on experience in the college’s small animal care centre as I learn better by doing something than just reading or hearing about it. “I’ve also done work placements in two vet surgeries and an animal charity and will do more work placements before I graduate. As well as being able to demonstrate experience when I’m applying for jobs, the placements are a good way to gain an insight into different areas of animal care to see which route you want to pursue as a career.” Verity Watkins, 25 from Newport Animal Health and Welfare Foundation Degree Typical careers
