Cobh (Irish: An Cóbh) known from 1849 to 1920 as Queenstown is a tourist port city on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland. Cobh is on the south side of the big island in Cork Harbor and is home to Ireland's only dedicated cruise terminal. Tourism in the area is based on the maritime legacy and the emigration of the city. It is associated with the RMS Titanic, which was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Opposite the city are Spike Island and Haulbowline Island. At a high point in the city stands the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cloyne, Saint Colman, which is one of the tallest buildings in Ireland. It is currently undergoing a large demographic development so that it is gradually becoming a satellite or dormitory city of Cork.
Cobh has a population of 12,347 inhabitants The climate is warm and temperate in Cobh. In Cobh, summers are comfortable; Winters are long, very cold and wet and it is windy and partly cloudy throughout the year. During the course of the year, the temperature generally varies from 4 ° C to 19 ° C and rarely drops below 1 ° C or rises above 23 ° C. Based on the tourism score, the best time of year to visit Cobh for hot weather activities is from late June to early September.
There are several airlines that offer flights to Cork lasting 1819 hours

The port, which has had several Irish language names, was first called "Cove" ("The Cork Cove") in 1750. Its name was changed by the British as "Queenstown" in 1849 to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit. No source has been identified for when the name was officially changed to Cobh, but it did occur at the time the Irish Free State was established. Cobh is a Gaelicisation of the English name Cove, and it shares the same pronunciation. It has no meaning in the Irish language. In ancient times, the area was known as 'Cuan un
Neimheadh' (the port of Neimheadh), while the great island was called Oilean Ard na Neimheadh. (Wikisource, s.f.)
According to legend, one of the first settlers in Ireland was Neimheidh, who landed in the port of Cork more than 1,000 years before Christ. He and his followers are said to have been wiped out in a plague, but the great island was known in Irish as Oilean Ard Neimheadh due to its association with him. Later it became known as Crich Liathain due to the powerful UĂ LiathĂĄin kingdom, which ruled the area of late Antiquity in the 13th century. The island was later known as Oilean Mor Una Barra (the Great Island of Barry and Barrymore), after Barry's family who inherited it. St. Colman's Cathedral The island town was known in English as Ballyvoloon, overlooking "The Cove". In 1743 the British built a fortress, later to be known as Cove Fort, east of town. The settlement was first referred to as Cove in 1750 by Smith the historian who said, "It was inhabited by sailors and administration officials." The Cork Directory of 1787 shows thirty companies in the city, including a butcher and a Draper. The Water Club established at Haulbowline in 1720 was the progenitor of the present Royal Cork Yacht club (RCYC, now based in Crosshaven) and is the oldest yacht club in the world. RCYC was based for many years in Cobh and the present Sirius Arts Center used to be a club of the RCYC organization. In 1966, the RCYC merged with the Munster Royal Yacht Club, retaining the RCYC name but moving its headquarters to those of the RMYC in Crosshaven on the other side of the harbor. International commotion led to Cobh developing rapidly in the 19th century. Due to the natural protection of its port environment, the city became an important center as a tactic for the purposes of the military war base, never more than at the time of the Napoleonic wars. Today, the Irish Naval Service headquarters is on Haulbowline Island off Cobh. Wars against the French led to the city, then usually known as Ballyvoloon or The Cork Cove, it is being developed as a British naval port assigned by an admiral. Many of the buildings that today
date from this time of accumulation. George Brodrick, Fifth Viscount Midleton dedicates English architect Decimus Burton to improving the urban landscape and buildings during the 1840s. The eventual cessation of hostilities dented Cobh's prosperity for a time, but soon became known as a center of Health; many patients stayed here for their health, due to the temperate climate. Among his number was Charles Wolfe, author of "Sir John Moore's Burial After Corunna". Wolfe's body is buried in the old church in the cemetery outside the city. (Wikisource, s.f.)
A lively harbor and a promenade carpeted with lively, colorful houses welcome us to this friendly little town in County Cork that holds key events in Ireland's history in its memory. This place is one of the most attractive corners of the country and displays great doses of history, art and culture. In the mid-19th century, under its old name, Queenstown, this picturesque town was the starting point for almost three million people who, in a time of starvation and famine, decided to emigrate to North America in search of a better future. The close family ties between both parts of the planet are reflected in the Cobh Heritage Center, where the moving story of many of those Irish people who left for a new hope is exhibited. (Marquina, 2018)
MASS EXODUS Cobh was the departure port for the first passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic, the Sirius, on April 22, 1838. They were fleeing famine and misery in the country between 1845 and 1952. It was a journey terrible, lasting up to six weeks, on the soIllustration 4 Reproduction of the interior of an old ship that can be seen at the Cobh Heritage Center
called coffin ships because many did not survive the journey. This period was so important that, in the city, the monument to Annie Moore and her siblings has been erected, the first person to be checked in at offices on Ellis Island, under the statue of Liberty. And although some were in search of a new life, others, some 40,000, were sent to prison colonies, such as Australia and the West Indies, in authentic floating jails that did not have the most basic Illustration 5 Statue on the waterfront of Annie Moore and her brothers.
Another tragic event marked the story of Cobh, the sinking of the R.M.S. Lusitania, May 7, 1915. During the First World War, on a trip from New York to Liverpool, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine because they believed that, in addition to civilians, it also carried ammunition. Days before, the German government had published advertisements in the American newspapers warning of the danger of traveling on the ship. This act generated outrage throughout the world and served as a pretext for the entry of the United States into the war.

The ship sank in just 18 minutes, just 12 km from Kinsale's Old Head. Thanks to the efforts and bravery of the local Cobh sailors and shipping companies, 762 passengers were saved and brought to the city. Of the remaining 1,197, they managed to recover 289 bodies, many
were never identified and were buried in the Old Church cemetery, located on the outskirts of the city.
THE LAST STOP OF THE LEGEND Cobh was also the last stop for the R.M.S. Titanic before leaving for its fateful end. Here were the offices of the White Star Line, and on April 11, 1912, the Titanic stopped locally to pick up 113

The ship set sail with 1,308 passengers and 898 crew members, a total of 2,206 people of whom 1,517 would never make it to New York, as three days later the ship hit an iceberg and sank without reaching its destination. You can visit the ocean liner museum, which keeps some pieces, models and even a reconstruction of a first-class cabin (the most luxurious) and a thirdclass cabin (one of the poorest or cheapest). To start the visit, they give you a boarding pass with the identity of a passenger who boarded third class at the time.

The museum consists of videos of the captain who addresses the public as if you were embarking yourself and then you see the recreations of the rooms. You also go outside where you can still see the original pier of the time. It is also possible to take the Titanic Trail tour or take a boat tour from the port to better understand Cobh's maritime past At the end of the whole there are two arcades with videos, audios ... and that's where you should look for your identity to know if you were saved or not. (LA VANGUARDIA , s.f.)
A significant shipbuilding industry was developed in the city. The remains of the Verolme shipyard today maintain many of the original cranes and hoists now part of an industrial and maritime heritage. The Age of Steam brought Cobh association with several landmarks, including the first steamship to sail from Ireland to England (1821) and the first steamship to cross the Atlantic (Sirius 1838), which departed from Passage West. In 1849, the name of the city was changed to Queenstown, in honor of Queen Victoria who had visited Ireland during that year.
Cobh was formerly an important shipping port for men, women and children who were deported to penal colonies like Australia. Records of such deportations can be found in the log books at the Cobh Museum. Since 1973 it has been housed in Scotland Church (a Presbyterian church until its 1969 closure), which overlooks the harbor where so many went

The coastline at Cobh The coastline at Cobh, probably around 1900 Tourism is a big employer in Cobh. Large cruise ships visit Cobh every year, mainly during the summer months, although many of the tourists are transported out of Cobh by bus to other tourist destinations. In total, nearly 100,000 cruise passengers and crew arrive in the city each year, when their ships dock in the city center at just Ireland's dedicated cruise terminal. Tourist attractions focus on the city's maritime heritage and emigration and include the Queenstown Story at the Cobh Heritage Center, Titanic Experience, Titanic Trail ride, Cobh Museum, Cobh Road Train, visits to Spike Island and the cathedral of San Colman. The city has remained largely unchanged since RMS Titanic left Cork Harbor in 1912, with the cityscape and piers still less the same. Opposite the city are Spike Island and Haulbowline Island. The latter is the seat of the Irish Naval Service, formerly a British Naval Base.

Cobh was home to Ireland's only iron and steel plant, the first state-owned Irish steel works, which was closed by its buyer, Ispat International, in 2001. There is controversy over the slag heap located at the steel mill, when there is fear that it can be leaching into the port. Illustration 11The coastline at Cobh, probably around 1900
Another important source of employment in Cobh was the ownership of the Dutch Verolme Cork shipyard, in Rushbrooke. It opened in 1960, but stopped working in the mid-1980s. In 1981, the MV Leinster was built in Verolme for service on the Dublin - Holyhead route. The last ship built at Verolme was from the Irish navy service LÉ Eithne (P31). Some ship repair work is still being carried to Rushbrooke using the dry dock and other facilities. The pumps have a reputation for dry docking to date from 1912. In the 21st century, a number of new developments were completed, such as a new shopping park in Ticknock in 2008, and a leisure center (with 25m pool) in August 2007. In 2010, tours of Spike Island began, with visits leaving Kennedy Pier near the city center.
The Sirius Arts Center is a center for the arts in Cobh and is located on the seafront. It hosts cultural events and music concerts, both in the house and around Cobh. The Cobh Pueblos Regatta is held every year around August, and a summer cultural landmark. The event includes performances on stage by local musicians and artists, as well as a contest to decide the 'queen race'. The festival usually ends with a fireworks display over the port, and draws up to 20,000 people. Cobh was the setting for the 2009 film Connor McPherson The Eclipse and is also used as a filming location for the 1999 film Angela Ashes.

Dublin and other Irish cities are ideal destinations to combine work travel and English studies. You can do this by enrolling in a program to work and learn English in Ireland, where you can combine English classes with paid work, or on your own. If you barely know English : The jobs to which you will have access will be primarily those that belong to sectors such as hospitality or commerce (pubs, restaurants, hotels or shops). Take advantage of the summer months, when the offer related to these types of jobs skyrockets. If you have a good level of English : A B2 or higher and adequate training will open the

In particular, Ireland is one of the most chosen destinations because it is an English-speaking country located in Europe, a continent where very few countries speak this language officially. In order to study English in Ireland, it is necessary to take a course of at least 25 weeks, which is the minimum time required to apply for a student visa.
In the case of Ireland, the benefits of applying for a student visa are multiple! Here we are going to list some of them:
It allows part-time work during the course time.
No age limit to apply.
Unlimited visa quotas.
It is applied at any time of the year.
Eight-week study break (vacation).
Courses with small groups for a more personalized teaching.
The visa can be extended.
As for any other visa, there are a series of requirements that must be met to be eligible to apply. Each country has its own requirements. Here we mention the requirements to apply for a student visa in Ireland:
Being over 18 years.
Enroll in a category 1 English school
Contract a course of at least 25 weeks.
Demonstrate financial solvency.
Have travel insurance.
The cost of the English courses ranges from EUR 2400 onwards, for a course of 25 weeks, the minimum that can be contracted. In addition, it must be borne in mind that the cost of the visa, which is EUR 300, is added to this amount. On the other hand, there are the necessary costs that must be demonstrated for economic solvency, which may vary depending on the time that they stay in the country.

Ireland stands out for being a country whose economy has grown tremendously in recent decades and offers many opportunities to foreigners who want to live in Ireland not only
because of that economy but because of the friendliness of the Irish. Although there are job offers in Cobh for Spanish, the requirement for most is to also have a sufficient level of English, so you have to try to make your level of English make a good impression from the beginning. (TransferWise, 2019)
Good working conditions In Ireland working conditions are quite good and tend to worker protection. The Irish work week has an average of 39 hours, with the maximum work week being 48 hours. These working hours are governed by the directives of the European Union (EU). Additionally, employees are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks vacation and 9 holidays per year. If you want to know how much you will charge for your work, you should bear in mind that your level of English may make you not have the same opportunities as a native speaker. However, you can take a look at the following table with the average wages divided by profession according to the PayScaleâ ľ portal:
You will be interested to know that you can work in Ireland without knowing English. The reason is that there are interesting job opportunities for Spanish speakers. There are currently a number of companies that are recruiting staff who can speak Spanish. Most of the offers for Spanish speakers are aimed at working as a Spanish teacher, customer service, translator, etc. However, opportunities may also appear in other sectors. (Work for the world, s.f.) You can work as a babysitter, since there is a demand for these types of workers, especially foreigners. If you do not have experience caring for children or do not think you are the right person for it, you can also offer your services as a Spanish teacher, either by looking for academies in Ireland or publishing your offers as a private teacher.
Also, if you offer your services in Spanish-speaking foreign restaurants such as Mexican, Peruvian or Spanish, being native will be an advantage. Ireland is a unique country with a culture that has crossed borders largely due to the hospitality of the Irish.
The Ireland Interprofessional Minimum Wage for 2020 is set at € 1,613.95. Although you will never earn less than this amount, the average salary reaches € 3,300 per month⁴, so the variation between one job and another can be enormous and even wider. Obviously, if you want to get a good job you will need an acceptable level of English. If you don't have it, you will have to settle for the lowest range of wages. From this amount you will have to subtract 20% in taxes. Roughly speaking, in hospitality you can earn around € 1,400 for yourself and in somewhat more qualified jobs, from € 1,700 onwards. If you want to know how much you will charge for you work , you should bear in mind that that your level of English may make you not have the same opportunities as a native speaker. The Irish Republic offers very diverse job opportunities due to the fact that the main technology companies have established their European headquarters there, so that job opportunities in these companies have proliferated. There is a shortage of professionals in certain areas such as:
Since 2014 the conditions for working as a doctor in Ireland have improved thanks to a project aimed at promoting job opportunities for doctors who intend to work in Irish hospitals or in private medical practices in the country. He thinks that Spanish doctors are highly valued, given the quality of teaching at Spanish universities. Hospitals are looking for experienced doctors and recent graduates. Experience is always valued positively but this does not mean that a recent graduate does not have opportunities to find work.
The precariousness of Spanish employment in the Nursing sector, together with the fact that Ireland is looking for Spanish nurses to employ, means that even recent graduates have real possibilities of working in Irish public and private hospitals. Spanish nurses are highly valued and highly recognized in Ireland. Some of them begin their professional career in this English-speaking country, improving their level of English an later continue it in other countries such as England, Australia or Dubai
.
We are alluding to the fact that Ireland is a country in which there is great demand in all the professions related to health and in the field of psychology there are also vacant positions. If you are a psychologist and you are looking for your opportunity to grow professionally, there could be yours. The exercise of this profession in Irish lands requires registration with the Health and Social Care Professionals Council, CORU.
Dentistry is another specialty whose professionals are scarce on the island, which motivates that being a dentist in Ireland is a possibility that makes the dreams of many come true. If you have a dental degree, you have the opportunity to head to cities like Dublin, Cork, Galway Limerick or Waterford, where an opportunity awaits you as a recent graduate or as an experienced dentist. Typically, you can apply for a full-time or part-time job, one on your own (as a selfemployed) or one in the health and beauty sector.
Working as an Au Pair in Ireland is one of the most common outlets for young people who aspire to spend a season in that country, perfecting the language. Above all, it is an option that girls prefer more.Although in principle the work of the Au Pair is limited to the care of the children of the house, sometimes they may ask you for more things. It is undeniable that you have to have a little luck with the host family assigned to you, but think that everything is negotiable. The main advantages of working as an Au Pair are summarized in that:
Accommodation and food are covered
You get paid about € 100 a week
You are obliged to practice English with the family
One of the best ways to think about where to work in Ireland is to volunteer. The reason? Irish people often appreciate that you have had previous experience in
the country. Few simpler and cheaper ways to get that experience than to volunteer. With this gesture you will kill two birds with one stone: you will enrich your CV while you do altruistic work and, at the same time, you will make contacts and have local references, perfecting the language and saving you the first months of maintenance and accommodation.
Working in Ireland as a Spanish teacher is a possibility that does not leave indifferent many people who want to be employed in that country teaching our language to the Irish. Since there is currently no accreditation for a teacher of Spanish as an “official foreign language, you will have to choose one at a recognized institute
Software developers, analysts and data, technical support and infrastructure are some of the most in-demand profiles in Ireland in relation to the ICT professions.
The Irish legal system, very different from ours, also requires Spanish members willing to practice in its legal system, that of the Common Law Spanish lawyers have to become a solicitor Ireland after passing the validation exams of their studies in Ireland, if they want to deal with extrajudicial matters or represent their clients, generally before the Courts of First Instance. If this is your case but you are also clear that yours is to represent people and litigate before the Courts, you must become a barrister.
Applying for the PPS Number is a prerequisite for working in Ireland. It is a kind of equivalent to our Social Security number, through which your taxes will be accounted for
The Intreo is an organization equivalent to the Spanish INEM or to the unemployment offices. In it you will be able to register in the job offers that you find available as well as request the aid that may correspond to you. The unemployment payment amounts to around â‚Ź 188 per week, although all this will depend on the situation and conditions of each person or family nucleus.
The first thing you have to ask yourself in relation to how to look for a job in Ireland is to make a good CV and a cover letter or motivation letter. Resumes in Ireland, like in England, do not have a photo or date of birth. Pay special attention to this diagram when making a correct equivalence of studies. Irish employers also attach great importance to the cover letter, in which you must explain why you are applying for the position in question and what are the reasons why you think you are the ideal candidate for it.
You are already on the Emerald Isle and you have to find accommodation. After the first days, when the best idea is to stay in a hostel or hostel, and as soon as you get a job, you have to consider looking for a more or less permanent home. Finding accommodation in Ireland, but especially in Dublin, is somewhat more complicated due to the increasing demand in recent years, but don't despair! Here are some good tips on where to look:

They are the two most photographed streets in Cobh. They are very steep, parallel to each other and most famous for their views and their rows of perfectly aligned multi-colored houses and sloping roofs. They are next to the cathedral and you can take some very nice photos with the perspective of the houses and the cathedral. You can't miss them if you go to Cobh.
In the most touristic points of the city, you will see explanatory signs in English with the most relevant information of that place, which is very interesting and so you know if you go through one of them that you must stop, since it is something important in Cobh. live music and are very welcoming. If you go on a day when the weather is nice, you can enjoy its terraces.
In front of the famous Cobh Harbor is Spike Island. Now it is a simple tourist attraction, but it is a place with a lot of history. A defensive fortress was built there that later served as a prison. It was in operation for much of the 19th century and from 1985 to 2004. This is Ilustraciรณn 18 Spike Island Cobhs Prison

The port of Cobh has always been very important. And rightly so, because it is the second largest natural harbor in the world behind that of Sydney. If it's a good day, it's a good idea
to book a boat trip around the port. From the water there are magnificent views of the city with its colorful buildings and the cathedral.

Between the two cities is an impressive 19th century manor house. This is Fota House, a mansion with neoclassical interiors that are pleasant to see. Members of the nobility lived there and artistic pieces of great value are still preserved. The gardens surrounding the house are still beautifully kept. In short, it is a highly recommended stop to spend a few hours transporting yourself to the past and learning how people lived at the time. The guided tour of the Victorian house and gardens costs â‚Ź 13.50. They are made daily from March to October and only on weekends in February and November. There are no guided tours in December.
