HISTORIC BUILDINGS
INTRODUCTION Colin McLean is a freelance architectural photographer, specialising in photographing historic buildings and places. Colin studied Architectural History at the University of Edinburgh and blends his knowledge of the subject with his photographic expertise. His photography was recognised with the award of a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society in 2014. He has worked for a range of architectural practices, trusts and heritage bodies across the UK (see inside back cover). His photographs have appeared in a range of publications (see inside back cover), in print and broadcast media, and in exhibitions: • “Grey Gardens”, Dundee Contemporary Arts 2016 • “Home”, Royal Scottish Academy 2016 • “Classical Edinburgh” is showing in Edinburgh City Art Centre from November 2019 till March 2020. Colin has a selection of fine art prints for sale in art galleries in the Scottish Borders. Colin is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, an affiliate member of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and is the current Chair of the Scottish Civic Trust.
COMMISSIONS Colin’s approach to each commission starts with research in order that he can gain an understanding of a building’s history and to ensure that we capture its significant features. The ideal approach is to walk round each building with the client and agree a shot list, but to leave Colin some room for creativity. For external views, good light is critical but unfortunately not always reliable. Colin rarely uses artificial light, preferring to exploit natural light and to use long exposures on a tripod-mounted camera - particularly for interiors. There can be occasions when specific features can benefit from a little additional light, and portable lighting can be provided. Colin uses professional grade Nikon DSLR cameras and Nikkor lenses. Virtually all shots are tripod-mounted to allow accuracy of composition, image sharpness and long exposures where dictated by ambient light levels. All images are shot in RAW format and processed using a colour-calibrated monitor in the studio. Finished image files can be made available in TIFF or JPEG formats and sized to suit clients’ requirements.
