ON THE STREETS OF
FLORENCE Photographs by Colin McLean
“Through these old streets I wander dreamily; Around me Florence sweeps her busy tide of life.” William Leighton, composer It is beyond doubt that the architecture of the city of Florence is amongst the most beautiful in the world; its mediaeval churches and its squares are stunning, and I have photographed them many times. But I have also been struck by how elegant and interesting are its people. This collection brings together portraits taken candidly on the streets of the city. My technique was to first capture the photograph, and then to catch the person’s attention, perhaps by waving at them and then holding up the camera. Without exception, they shrugged, smiled and waved back. It was a positive and gratifying experience, and says something about the people of this wonderful city. Colin McLean
