Penicuik House

This restored ruin featured in a Telegraph article about rescued country houses, and continues a series shot for Penicuik House Preservation Trust.

Science & Technology, Art & Design and Fashion Galleries at the National Museum of Scotland

On July 8th, the NMS opened three new galleries, and I was commissioned by Metaphor, who designed the displays, to photograph visitors’ reactions on opening day.

Notre Dame du Haut

This renowned chapel by le Corbusier was constructed in 1951-55 and was a dramatic departure from the techtonic forms he had used previously, and at the contemporary La Tourette of 1953-60 (inset). I was fortunate to visit both in June, and enjoyed the solitude of a night in a monk’s cell at the latter. Both buildings have chapel interiors that are dark, but whose darkness is magically pierced by beams of light through primary coloured stained glass windows.

Stained Glass

Yarrow Parish Church dates originally from 1640, though subsequently extended and amended. It was burned out on Easter Sunday 1922 and rebuilt. This is a detail of the stained glass of 1927 by Douglas Strachan.

Contrasts

Two contrasting views from a trip to the Continent. Poppies in the wheat fields of Champagne, and below a detail of Liege Railway Station. This was designed by Santiago Calatrava in 2009 and displays his signature soaring curves of white concrete.

Borders Churches

This is Ashkirk Parish Church. What we see dates mainly from a rebuilding of c1790, with minor alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cemetery has a fine collection of early stones.

Apprentice Stonemason

Angus Harkness started his apprenticeship on an HLF-funded project and is now working full-time with Scottish Canals, repairing and replacing stonework. This portrait was one of a series for HLF to illustrate the Changing Lives programme
