Real Lives, Making a Difference

Two more portraits from this series for the Heritage Lottery Fund. Alan is adding the finishing touches to a traditional wooden boat he has built at the GalGael Trust, learning wood-working skills. Jasmine (below) volunteered to make two short films for South Lanarkshire’s Pits & Ponies project and has used that experience to gain a place at a film school in Los Angeles.

Hinter land

The arts organisation NVA has taken ownership of St Peter’s Seminary, at Cardross near Helensburgh. Designed by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia in 1960 as a teaching facility for Catholic priests, it was redundant before it was opened, due to a change in teaching practice. Hinterland was an emotional and spectacular sound and light installation to illustrate the potential of this modern ruin.

For th Bridge

The Forth Bridge, which everyone recognises to mean the rail bridge, was designed by John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker, and constructed by Sir William Arrol from 1882 to 1890. Its innovative cantilever construction was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2015. I was fortunate to make a trip in March to the viewing platform on the north tower, some 360 feet above the River Forth. It is not for the faint-hearted, but we were rewarded with a beautiful clear day and remarkable views up and down the estuary. This night shot was taken from the old ferry pier at North Queensferry, with the moon rising in the east.

Tim Stead

The late Tim Stead was a renowned Scottish woodworker and furniture maker. Those familiar with Cafe Gandolfi in Glasgow will know his work there. I’m assisting the Tim Stead Trust by providing photographs of a selection of his work and here we have The King’s Chair. Tim’s style continues through the work of The WoodNeuk, and this is Ross in the workshop, making a chair.

London

I had a couple of days in London and took the opportunity to look at some new architecture. I was struck by the number of tower cranes across the skyline − the capital’s construction industry is clearly booming. Also, the amount of what you might think of as public open space which is actually now private open space, with all sorts of restrictions on photography. These shots are of the redeveloped King’s Cross Gasholders. The apartments are designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Gasholders Park is by Bell Philips Architects.

River Tweed Project

I have continued to trace the Tweed and its tributaries. This is Ettrick Bridge, just upstream of where the Ettrick joins the Tweed. It was one of those days that we have had so many of recently − heavy rainshowers interspersed with beautiful clear light.
