The mission of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership is to transform students, faculty, communities, and the traditional university experience by adopting problembased approaches to education. By promoting the values of service, engagement, and leadership, we enable our students to energetically address the challenges of the 21st century. By fostering creative and public scholarship, we ensure that our faculty produces and disseminates scholarships that is both relevant and in-touch. The school located in historic Harlem at The City College of New York, addresses pressing global issues such as expanding rights and democracy, community stability and health, economic growth and national wealth creation and promoting education and the general betterment of those in need. The school focuses its research and teaching activities on fostering solutions that further equality, prosperity, stability, and peace for the whole people in Harlem, in New York, and around the globe. Specifically, the School: • Provides rigorous degree programs that integrate service, leadership training, and mentoring into the curriculum, ensuring that students engage with real-world challenges and develop the capacity, drive, and public spirit to serve as responsible leaders and stewards of the common good; • Maintains and supports a faculty dedicated to the highest standards of research and to the university’s democratic and public obligations, including the responsibility to disseminate research in usable forms to concerned audiences, particularly to those striving to redress injustice or disparity; • Serves as a forum for experts, policymakers, community leaders, and others dealing with the major challenges of our time in ways that dismantle traditional barriers between the academic world, proximate communities, and the broader public.

VETERAN

CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER CONGRESSMAN JOHN LEWIS

Our Country needs you, to be a headlight and not a taillight. We need each and everyone of you to lead our nation to a better place. When I was growing in Troy, Alabama and would see those signs 'white man', 'colored man', white women' ,'colored women', I would ask my mother, my father, my grandparents and my great grandparents, Why? and they would say "That's the way it is. Don't get in a way. Don't get in trouble." But one day in 1955, 15years old in 10th grade, I heard about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., and I was inspired to get in trouble and I have been getting in good trouble ever since. I tell you as graduates, as young people, so smart and so gifted. You have a moral obligation, a mission, a mandate, to go out there and get in trouble and turn our world and our country upside down to set it right side up.

MESSAGE F ROM GENERAL COLIN POWEL L

Dear Graduates, Congratulations. Today, you join many generations of CCNY graduates and eight cohorts of Colin Powell School students who came before you in completing your degrees. As was the case in 2020, circumstances dictate that we celebrate this milestone with an online, rather than an in-person, ceremony. While we cannot gather together on campus, know that we are all cheering for you today. We founded the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership nearly a decade ago because of the deep faith we have in you and your capacity. This faith is a tradition at CCNY, and a deeply American tradition. Thousands have come before you: many of them new arrivals to this country, often poor, frequently members of minority groups. They came to CCNY, as I came to CCNY, because it is a place where only your talent, your vision, and your drive matter. I am proud that this school bears my name, because it signals our commitment to education as the single most important thread binding us to the dream of a better world. Leadership and service are two hallmarks of our work at the Colin Powell School, and you should carry them with you. No matter what career you choose to pursue, you have the skills to lead, to communicate a vision, to excite others into working with you, to execute a plan. Bend those skills into the service of

your community, wherever you may find it. Seek out places that need your talent. Devote yourself to lifting up others. Fulfill the faith we have placed in you. For the rest of your lives, you will be a vital part of the history and community of CCNY and the Colin Powell School. Wear that legacy well. Be proud of this vital institution and of the traditions we are building together. As you and your fellow graduates go on to careers in business, government, and public service, stick together and support one another. In the years to come, help us advance the mission of this school by your words and deeds, so that together, we may make the world better for those who come next. Those of us who preceded you will eagerly watch as make your mark. Those that will come after you will need your support and attention. Together, we will carve out a new place in this city and beyond. With my most heartfelt congratulations,

GENERAL COLIN L. POWELL, USA (Ret.)

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Graduates, Today, we gather to celebrate the class of 2021. You faced unprecedented challenges to reach this milestone and we salute your hard work and perseverance, your talent and commitment, in the face of an unprecedented global crisis. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, congratulations! It’s a big day not only for you and for your family and friends, but also for the nation and our world. Because we need your commitment, your perspective, and your passion to make all our futures brighter. Your Colin Powell School education has prepared you to be leaders in your fields, to enter professional life, and to make a difference for the better. You have studied power, wealth, cognition, culture and our connections to one another. We need you—now more than ever— to tackle big challenges and tough jobs. You are poised to affect domestic and international policy, law, business and finance, and individual and organizational psychological well-being. You are ready to be leaders in service to our city, our country, and the world. If we, as a faculty, have succeeded, you leave here with as many questions about yourself and this world as you have answers. The journey from here will have twists and turns, ups and downs. Be patient with yourself. Support one another.

Be open to continued learning. Keep your values, your vision, and your ambition. Stay close to those who care about you—including those of us at the Colin Powell School who are invested in your success. Lean on us, as we will lean on you, to form community and to leverage bonds of strength toward solving social problems. City College and the Colin Powell School have given you the foundations for success. As you move on to your next chapter, remember that you will always be part of the City College and Colin Powell School communities. You take your place as part of a proud tradition. My colleagues on the faculty and staff believe in you, and we are counting on you. Please accept my personal congratulations for what you have accomplished and my enthusiastic best wishes for your continued success. Sincerely,

ANDREW RICH
