Should we really take eating healthy and exercising seriously? Exercise and eating healthy are two of the most important things you need to do to take care of your body properly. Both exercise, and eating healthy, have many advantages and benefits. They help with multiple things needed throughout your life. These things include growing physically, mentally, and if you are religious, spiritually as well. All of this adds up to your body functioning in the highest and best way possible. People that has unhealthy eating habits, is at severe risk for obesity, diabetes and possible stroke. Unhealthy eating habits have a harmful effect on the body. Today, Americans debate whether eating healthy or exercising is worth the effort. According to Lisa Sherman, author of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, "Exercise may make it easier to make healthy food choices by changing parts of the brain that influence impulsive behavior. A review paper by US and Spanish authors proposes that physical activity helps to enhance 'top–down' inhibitory control in the brain, making it easier to resist unhealthy food and instead choose healthy options" (June 2012): p82. Thanks to our most popular fast food restaurants, such as, McDonalds, Wendy's, Olive Garden etc. How could people trick their brains into declining fast food and choose a more healthier option. There are a couple of easy changes you can make that can have a profound effect on satiety – how full you feel. Research shows that using smaller crockery tends to trick our brains into believing we are eating more, a psychological phenomenon that can best be illustrated by looking at the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you put two identical portions of food on a big plate and a small plate, the portion on the bigger plate will look smaller, and vice versa: our brains can't help but be fooled by this effect, even when we know they are the same. Consequently, eating unhealthy food choices could increase the risk of diabetes. Having diabetes is something nobody wants, but could also not always be avoided. A person could have diabetes and not know about it. According to, NIH.org, some of the symptoms of diabetes are, increased of thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, unexplained

Is it the government's responsibility to promote healthy eating?
When you pass by the grocery store and see the aisles stocked up with food, do you ever think about how many people can afford all that food? A healthy lifestyle can be influenced by living in a healthy environment and a government that promotes healthy eating. Also healthy foods should be available to everyone because for some people there are food limitations and affect their nutrition. The government can make regulations of healthy food standards be met by other fast food restaurants. The government should promote healthy eating to influence others that eating healthy is better. Healthcare is so high because of obesity affecting the system and is an increasing problem in the United States. It will only increase if there are no changes to enforce healthier eating choices. According to the Johnson Foundation "Currently , estimates of these cost range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion per year"(Wood).

Healthy food should be accessible to everyone. If healthy food isn't available for everyone all it's going to do is cause more and more health problems. If we made healthy organic food the same price as cheap unhealthy food there would be a big difference in the health of our country. It's completely unfair to make healthy food too expensive for other people to buy, which causes them to buy cheap unhealthy food, like off a dollar menu at a fast food restaurant. This issue needs to be put to an end. In Robert Kenner's film Food Inc. this topic is addressed. It says in the movie that low income families have no other choice but to buy cheap fast food. These families rarely get the chance to buy good, healthy, organic food because it's too...show more content...
That's quite a few problems for one country and that is not even all of them. If this doesn't make you question our eating habits in the U.S. not sure what will because this is obviously a problem that needs to be fixed. Some reasons why healthy food needs to be available to everyone is because of all of the health problems we have already in the United States. Another reason would be how the only thing families can afford is cheap fast food, prices needs to be changed for healthy food so people don't experience health problems from eating too much unhealthy food. These are two main reasons why this is an issue in our country. If we lower the prices for healthy foods then we would see a big change in the health of our country. We already have too many health problems in the United States because of unhealthy, cheap food from fast food restaurants. A long time ago there was never this many cases of obesity, and diabetes because there wasn't that many fast food restaurants and one dollar menus. When these showed up everybody went to them because it was cheaper than healthy organic food. If healthy food was priced as low as the dollar menu at McDonalds then there would be drastic changes in our countries health, and eating habits. Prices really need to be changed for healthy food because fast food is the only thing some families can afford now of days. According to the film Food Inc. low

My parents raised their eight children with the belief that eating healthy foods were crucial in maintaining proper growth and development. An abundance of fresh garden (organic) vegetables and fruits, dairy foods, and various selected meats was the norm in our household. Special deserts and treats were frequently provided too. My grandfather, with all good intentions, began purchasing cow's milk. He cared about his grandchildren very much and believed it to be nutritious. The taste can never be forgotten. It was painful to drink that glass of milk. A container full of chocolate syrup couldn't disguise the disgusting taste. Unfortunately, many of the foods we consumed are not considered to be healthy today. The recent graduate course, "Creating Health and Balance in Today's Classroom", along with a personal interest in my health and that of my loved ones, has enabled me to have a better understanding that specific foods impose a major health risk. Being conscience of what we eat is, frankly, a matter of life or death.
Statistics list Heart disease as being the number one cause of death in our country. Yet, with a disciplined attitude, obtaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can prevent and reverse heart disease in many cases. Sadly, Many Americans, continue to eat unhealthy foods that cause unnecessary, early death. According to Campbell, T.C., & Campbell, T.M. It is nearly impossible to turn on the television or radio and not be hit with advertisements introducing the latest fast food trend – fresh and healthy food options. More often, the media bombards us with slogans such as Subway's common pitch to "eat fresh" or McDonald's million–dollar advertisement campaign to try the new fruit and walnut salad. Attention has made an abrupt turn from the greasy, deep–fried originals at the fast food chains to more health conscious food choices. However, the selection of varying food groups is limited, and food restaurants are beginning to recognize the problem. Gary Hirshberg, a parent frustrated with the food selection his family had while on the road for vacation, started a store called O'Naturals that now has four different locations in California and Boston. "We call it fast food with a mission,'" said Hirshberg, who envisions his healthy restaurants shaking up the restaurant business (Andrew Martin). Subway is another popular restaurant that draws their attention to the fresh side of the market. However, there are few fast food places, like Subway, that can claim their food to be fresh. Many of the well–known fast food vendors claim to offer fresh salads, fruits, and sandwiches; but "freshly packaged does not necessarily mean freshly made" (Blogspot). Many would argue that the latest craze with the addition of healthy fast food isn't due to obesity or quality freshness, but simply expanding the market to increase profit. A high percentage of Americans eat fast food, and an even increasing number of Americans are becoming more aware of their dietary health. Therefore, to increase sales to those individuals who normally wouldn't splurge on a double cheeseburger, fries, and soda; fast food corporations have expanded their market. Not knowing when to stop can result in one developing an eating disorder. There are many types of eating disorders. The main two types of eating disorders people get from excessive eating is obesity and anorexia. Obesity is a disease of excess fat tissue in the body, or when someone eats too much. Anorexia is when someone who has a low self–esteem and often a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions by consuming as little food as possible. Someone who is overweight will eat because they are not happy with the way they look. Someone who suffers from anorexia starves themselves because they are unhappy with the way they look. Because school always serving fatty meals like hot dogs and fried chicken to the students. In the essay "School Food, Public Policy, and Strategies for Change" by Marion Nestle, she mentioned the dilemma of whether students should eat more or eat healthy at school, and Nestle declare that school should provide healthier food for students. Eating unhealthy lunches for years can take a serious negative toll on both mental and physical health. According to the article "The Effects of Children Eating Unhealthy School Lunches", by Carly Schuna, she mentioned that unhealthy school lunch may cause obesity and other weight issues, and Nestle also pointed out that "the most important nutritional problem among children today is obesity–a consequence of too much food, rather than too little" (255). In today's economy, on average one spends nearly 11% of his/her income on food. The price of healthy food being so high causes Americans to eat cheap foods high in fats. Busy schedules often affect the amount of time people have to prepare healthy, nutritious, whole food meals to for households. Over the past two years or so, the cost of vegetables, meat, fruit, and other high–nutrition, along with low –calorie foods has increased by an average of 19.5%. On the other hand junk food prices have decreased slightly, by 1.8%. The key effects of choosing a cheaper, high–fat diet over a more expensive, healthier diet are finances, convenience, or appeal in taste. Many automatically assume that the more upscale product is healthier. The Ohio State University researchers have took participation in several experiments, and according to results found that volunteers attached more health value to foods they were told cost more money. They were more likely to be doubtful of health claims they spotted on the packages of cheaper items rather than on those of the more costly products. As reading an article according to Rebecca Reczek, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of marketing at Ohio State stated, "When one has little to no information about a product's nutritional value, individuals tend to rely on price as an indicator of its healthfulness" ("Why Healthy Food Doesn't Have to Cost More," n.d). In many occasions it is best to do research on a product you question. One can be very fortunate to find the same quality of an "expensive" product for a price that is in a household's budget. Society plays a huge role in why not many eat healthy because of the expenses. When watching TV the viewers are expose to the high fat eateries such as McDonalds rather than advertising spinach and baked chicken rather that fried. Some households follow a very strict budget and never eat fast foods no matter the circumstance. One down fall of fast food eating is that it can be very affordable as well as high in fat which come along with other health issues. Not many take the time out to calculate the total fat they are placed in the digestive system. The high class quintiles spends about 4x as much as the lower class in general as well Get more content
The Pros And Cons Of Healthy Food
The Importance Of Healthy Food Choices
All across America people choose whether to eat healthy or unhealthy. How can we make healthier choices about what we eat? I chose this because I think that we all should in some way change our eating habits. Making healthy food choices means taking a close look at your current eating habits, and making small changes that add up to new habits and better nutrition. For example, you can eat smaller portion sizes and cut back on eating certain foods or food types. It's not as if you don't know which foods are healthy and which ones aren't. But sometimes it's difficult to make the right food choices when you're constantly faced with temptation or don't have a plan. Not only do you have to make food choices every time you eat a meal or a snack, you're actually making food choices all day long. Maintaining a healthy diet is much easier than you think, if you know how to make smart food choices. A strong will does not have any problems to go through a food change. The essays that I chose for this are "Eat Food: Food Defined" by Michael Pollan, "The pleasure of Eating" by Wendell Berry, "The Business Case for Healthier Food Options" by Michelle Obama, and "Eating Made simple" by Marion Nestle.
First, in Michael Pollan's essay "Eat Food:Food Defined" he introduces many ways to shop in a grocery store. According to Pollan consuming food that isn't broadly recognized as food isn't usually a healthy option. He supports by using the motto "Don't eat anything your great grandmother

Fast food has been an extremely evident food supplier in the past 10 years, so I have decided to investigate further into the fast food world. I am looking into the "battle" between fast food and healthy food, and why fast food is so cheap compared to healthy food. There's something about fast food, I have just been so passionate about it, and have always wondered what's in fast food and why is it so inexpensive. I feel like fast food ingredients and prices should be expressed to the public, in which why fast food products are sold for so cheap. Addressing the products ingredients, and why their ingredients are so heavily processed is most definitely important for people's health. "People who eat fast food are 51 percent more likely to develop depression than those who eat little to no fast food."(Public Health Nutrition)
On the other hand, there's healthy foods that are much higher in nutrients, and satisfaction, not to mention they are a lot more expensive. Healthy foods contain ingredients such as fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, these foods can help prevent diseases like type two diabetes and cancer. Healthy foods have many advantages compared to fast food. Things such as carbohydrates and fiber are important to contributing to a healthy diet.
