SIMPLY PRAY By Lakan Mariano The priest thought she was drunk. Hannah and her husband had been trying to have a child but she but could not conceive. The shame thrown at her face regularly drove her to tears. So she went to the tabernacle to pray. “And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk” (1 Samuel 1:10, 13).
There are times when the heaviness of our heart renders us speechless. There are times when what we cannot say in words we express in tears freely flowing. Believers in Jesus Christ can have the confidence that their God hears their wordless prayers and takes notes of their tears. “If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves...” (Romans 8:26-27, MESSAGE). God knows us so well that “before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely” (Psalm 139:4). God is not impressed with the eloquence of many words but with the sincerity of our hearts. “And when you pray don’t rattle off long prayers like the pagans who think they will be heard because they use so many words. Don’t be like them. After all, God, who is your Father, knows your needs before you ask him” (Matthew 6:7-8, PHILLIPS). With a good Father believers in Jesus Christ have we can pray simply. “Our Father in heaven...” (Matthew 6:9). “Our.” It tells me I do not come alone, that I am not alone. It reminds me that I belong to a community of believers who go through the same things I do.

“Father” tells me that I am a child of God because of what Jesus did on the cross. The precious salvation that is by grace alone, in Christ alone and I received it simply by putting trusting Jesus' work on the cross. “In heaven” reminds us of his sovereign position. He rules and reigns over everything. Yet, he is not far. For he is right there, in me and beside me, and all around me. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me” (Psalm 23:4). “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the LORD surrounds His people From this time forth and forever” (Psalm 125:2). Are you struggling today? Simply pray.

The Messenger Crockett Elementary Christmas Over the past several years we have developed a relationship with the teachers and staff at Crockett. Last year we started taking a step farther connecting with the students and teachers by hosting school events in our sanctuary. This year we want to take it one more step in connecting with the families by giving each student at Crockett a Christmas gift this December.
Each child’s gift will include • • • •
Crockett T shirt with their school logo on it along with “CHBC Loves the Crockett Bears” A reusable Water Bottle with their School logo on it A Fun age appropriate toy/game An age appropriate Bible
Going off of last years numbers there were 390 Kindergarten-5th grade students. We set a budget of approximately $20 a student. At that rate we will need to raise $10,000.00! We have put together a team of 12 to lead this project, but we need the entire church to get behind us as we make plans and get things ready, here’s ways you can help: 1) There are envelopes on the Crockett Christmas Display if you would like to donate to help 2) We are having a VBS Style Boys vs Girls Change War. Drop off your coins/dollars in the jars in the foyer. We will collect change through Mid November. If the boys win Chel Smith will receive a pie in the face at our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and if the Girls win Rex Stephenson will get the Pie in the Face! 3) You may purchase a business sponsor ship card for your donation of any amount, Available in the office. 4) There will be more fundraising opportunities coming, plus as time gets closer, we will need help sorting and packing the gifts You may contact Philip Cross for more information!
