SET YOUR AFFECTIONS ON CHRIST By Lakan Mariano To be spiritual is to be moved and motivated by the Holy Spirit of God. To be spiritual is to be guided by God's word. It is to “walk by the Spirit... led by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16, 18) Being spiritual is not the pursuit of philosophical abstractions but of the concrete revelation of God (Colossians 2:8). Being spiritual is not following rules and regulations that are but a “shadow of things of to come” (Colossians 2:17a). You would not want to hug or kiss the shadow of your spouse, would you? The One that casts the shadow, the reality is Christ (Colossians 2:17b) and he has already come. Kiss the Son (Psalm 2:12), not his shadow. Being spiritual is not “false humility” expressed in pious-sounding words but directed at the worship of beings other than the true God (Colossians 2:18). You can sound pious and you can be wellmeaning but if you worship anyone other than Christ you might as well be worshiping your desk or your door post or the dog house. Your worship only has meaning when you worship Christ. Being spiritual is not abstaining from the comforts of this world and the harsh treatment of one's body (Colossians 2:21-23). All of the above are man-centered pursuits done in man's energy. So how does a believer in Jesus Christ practice spirituality? God tells us, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3). True spirituality is to take our eyes off of ourselves and what we do and set them on Christ, to fall in love with him more and more as he grows us in our knowledge of him.

The Messenger Crockett Elementary Christmas

Over the past several years we have developed a relationship with the teachers and staff at Crockett. Last year we started taking a step farther connecting with the students and teachers by hosting school events in our sanctuary. This year we want to take it one more step in connecting with the families by giving each student at Crockett a Christmas gift this December. Each child’s gift will include • Crockett T shirt with their school logo on it along with “CHBC Loves the Crockett Bears” • A reusable Water Bottle with their School logo on it • A Fun age appropriate toy/game • An age appropriate Bible

Men of all ages are welcome! Going off of last years numbers there were 390 Kindergarten-5th grade students. We set a budget of approximately $20 a student. At that rate we will needus! to raise $10,000.00! Join We have put together a team of 12 to lead this project, but we need the entire church to get behind us as we make plans and get things ready, here’s ways you can help: 1) There are envelopes on the Crockett Christmas Display if you would like to donate to help 2) We are having a VBS Style Boys vs Girls Change War. Drop off your coins/dollars in the jars in the foyer. We will collect change through Mid November. If the boys win Chel Smith will receive a pie in the face at our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and if the Girls win Rex Stephenson will get the Pie in the Face! 3) You may purchase a business sponsor ship card for your donation of any amount, Available in the office. 4) There will be more fundraising opportunities coming, plus as time gets closer, we will need help sorting and packing the gifts You may contact Philip Cross for more information!
