One of the worse cases that I read of involved a child that had painkiller withdrawal symptoms shortly after birth. Until you're overweight, you really don't realize how prejudiced people are. What ends up happening goes like this. First you try to laugh it off, then you start to get hurt, real hurt. shocking statistics According to The White House, the average potency of marijuana has more than doubled since 1998. Bongs spread diseases. A recent study found that those who smoke marijuana out of bongs put themselves at risk to contract TB as well as other bacterial and viral infections.
monumental quotes "I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an Hbomb blast" - Ronald Reagan "Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the Country." Thomas Jefferson
16
IN LAST YEAR'S summer issue of back\slash we examined the influence that marijuana has had on contemporary culture in a piece titled, “We Are Generation Green.” Twelve months later, has anything changed? Is the War on Drugs in its final days? Is the United States Government still “DUH...WINNING” its fight against marijuana? Or, is the future of pot reform going up in smoke? he Florida legislature is currently debating a bill to legalize medical marijuana. The bill was introduced by Freshman Congressman, Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth), who believes there is no sense in letting people use artificial drugs like oxycodone or methadone, while banning an herb that is natural and arguably safer. According to Clemens, medical marijuana could generate as much as $12 Million per year in tax revenue for the State. With a growing budget deficit, and the large number of chronically ill and elderly residents in Florida, the bill is quickly garnering support. A recent study found that 57 percent of Floridians favor legalizing marijuana for medical purposes; but regardless, the the Florida Medical Marijuana bill most likely will not pass through the FL Congress, because both the House and the Senate are Republican controlled. However, if the bill did pass, the fight wouldn’t be over yet. Medical marijuana would then go on the ballot in
\\ summer \\ volume 3 issue 4
2012 as a constitutional amendment; and in order for legalization to commence, sixty percent of the conservative peninsula’s voters would have to approve it. Even if the votes came through, Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott would probably veto it. Chances are: the bill will not become law. Rhetoric against the FL Medical Marijuana bill is centered on pointing out the “problem in which powerful pain pills are freely prescribed by shady doctors.” Such trust issues are understandable in a state where liscensed medical doctors have dolled out millions of illegal narcotic prescriptions; and nobody can deny the significance of the painkiller epidemic. But Congressman Clemens argues that “pain pill abuse kills up to six people a day in Florida, [while] medical marijuana has never killed anyone”. As the debate continues, it is becoming clear that even if medical marijuana is legalized in Florida, legalization or even decriminalization of marijuana in this state is a long way away.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
ELSEWHERe in the us
Outside Florida, less conservative states have made larger strides with marijuana reform. When marijuana is decriminalized, civil fines are imposed rather than criminal charges for possessing less than a specified amount. Nearly a dozen states currently have marijuana decriminalized including New York, Alaska, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. Legalization can be broken down by purpose: medicinal or recreational. There are fifteen states that have legalized medical marijuana including Colorado, Rhode Island and New Jersey, as well as DC. Marijuana is not totally legal for recreational use in any states or territories, although California did make an effort to do so in 2010. The Golden State came close, but lost the vote. Federally, pot remains a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substance Act and the DEA continues to crack down on its growth, distribution and sale on a national scale (including states or cities with rules that differ from the national law.)
THE FEDS
It wouldn’t be a question of state versus federal rights if the national laws were to change, but despite high-hopes from pothead Obama-fans, the President has somehow managed to keep marijuana reform out of the national debate. Maybe he is waiting until his second term to do something bold, but it’s unlikely. In January he made a promise to "reduce drug use and the great damage it causes" with a new national policy said to treat drug use
more as a public health issue, and thereby focus more on prevention and less on interdiction (prohibition). Despite his claim, the Obama administration has actually increased spending on interdiction and law enforcement to record levels this year, which now account for $10 billion of the $15.5 billion drug-control budget. Marijuana supporters are still waiting for some of that promised change. Jeffrey Miron, a Harvard economist says "Current policy is not having an effect on reducing drug use, but it's costing the public a fortune." Even Richard Gil Kerlikowske, director of the US Office of National Drug Control Policy declared to the AP, "In the grand scheme, [the War on Drugs] has not been successful," As the War on Drugs goes on, the supply of drugs has not been slowed and the violence is intensifying. Supporter of marijuana reform or not, one cannot deny the fact that, after 40 years, the War on Drugs has cost our country more than $1 trillion and the priceless lives of thousands; while statistics show that pot usage has gone up.
POTENTIAL RISKS
Though many a stoner has argued otherwise, three notable studies this year proved that marijuana use DOES have an effect on one’s long term health. If you are genetically predisposed to a mental condition such as schizophrenia or psychosis, the use of marijuana may cause an earlier onset of the disorder. Additionally, pot users are more likely to
poli-sci
\\\\\\\
have a psychotic episode within 10 years of use. And teens are especially at risk. Even if they do not have a family history of mental illness, smoking pot while the brain is developing adversely affects one’s neurological pathways. Marijuana is prevalent on basically every college campus, and unfortunately, the onset age for schizophrenia is typically 18-28. Those who feel they may have early symptoms of the disorder or have a family history of mental illness are strongly urged to avoid marijuana altogether. Recent studies have also emphasized the level of cognitive impairment caused by marijuana. According to the American Academy of Neurology, the risks of cognitive impairment outweigh the beneficial pain relief from weed in multiple sclerosis patients
A WHITE FLAG?
The United States has been fighting this battle for decades and marijuana remains a divisive topic. Yes, the War on Drugs is costly. Yes, countless citizens have been imprisoned for non-violent crimes. Yes, the marijuana black-market has led to horrific violence. And yes, weed use has negative neurological effects. Marijuana is truly an ethical gray zone. Nonetheless, some officials from the United Nations and Great Britain have raised the white flag. In March 2011, headlines around the world announced, “British officials declare defeat on the War on Drugs.” Is the United States next?

A-FRAMES
Founded by Aaron Dea and Walker Shipley
A.w.H.
Founded by Jordan Markel
Blank Label Founded by Fan Bi
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
University of New South Wales
Walker Shipley moved to San Diego after graduating college to live with his younger brother. During this time, he and his brother developed a revolutionary type of surf-rack, that was less expensive to make than anything else in the industry, easier to hang, and also environmentally friendly. Thus A-Frames was born. Their product is brilliantly simple and offers the same board protection as even the most expensive of racks. When talking to back\slash about the early stages of his business, Walker said that the toughest thing AFrames has dealt with was gaining recognition within the surfing community. Being new to the world of entrepreneurship, Walker made a conscious effort to learn as much as he could about business before launching, and his studies paid off. Despite any difficulties that came their way, Walker and Aaron found motivation from their friends and customers who recognized the quality of the mounts that A-Frames produced. Their product was very well received at the 2011 Surf Expo in Orlando, and this has encouraged them to increase the pace at which they are pursuing their dream. Walker and Aaron’s greatest advice for a college student who wants to start his or her own business is to “Go for it!”
Jordan Markel is currently pursuing his Master’s in Public Health from USF, where he has been heavily involved in clinical research. His experiences in this field led him to found Advocates for World Health (A.W.H.), an organization that provides medical supplies for individuals in under-developed countries. His team is composed of students and trained medical professionals, and currently has chapters at USF and UF. In the future, Jordan hopes to expand to more universities. Some of his initial struggles in establishing A.W.H. include working with donors and learning how to complete intricate paperwork. Though he had previous leadership experience, Jordan never saw himself as an entrepreneur, so he had to acquire a variety of business skills in order to successfully run his organization. He finds it inspiring to travel to the locations where the medical supplies are sent and says that it is rewarding to see the medical facilities using the supplies to treat their patients. Jordan’s proudest moments are when he sees that the patients are provided for and treated with the medical supplies that A.W.H. donates. His best advice for an aspiring college entrepreneur is to be passionate about one’s business. “You want to grow your business, and be able to look back and be passionate about what you have developed.”
Fan Bi is the founder of Blank Label, a company that allows you to fully customize and buy dress shirts online. Fan says that he prefers shopping for clothing online and believes that in the near future, most people will purchase their clothes through online retailers rather than going to physical stores. Blank Label is unique in the sense that it allows its customers to express their individuality by wearing 100% customized dress shirts. For less than $70, anyone can customize a dress shirt to their liking. And, all of Blank Label's shirts are stitched by top-notch manufacturers. Fashion conscious consumers love creating their look totally from scratch, and Blank Label is capitalizing on this, offering exponential combinations, and allowing users to customize every imaginable detail of their perfect shirt: from fabric selection to collar style to detailed stitching. Initially, Fan says that finding the right manufacturer for the products was tough, as the quality of the clothing had to be the best. While the business is not always easy and may bring occasional headaches, Fan keeps going because this is something he truly enjoys. So when you need that perfect shirt for that big job interview or a hot date, hit up Blank Label and get sharp.

procrastinate have profound issues with self regulation. To break it down a little bit further, according to Dr. Joseph Ferrari (associate professor of psychology at De Paul University) there are actually three different types of procrastinators. First, there are the “thrill-seekers” who wait until the final minute to complete a project for the pure adrenaline rush of the pressure. Then come the “avoiders”- those who have “fear of failure” or “fear of success” and “would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.” Finally, there are “decisional procrastinators” who avoid making decisions so that they are not held responsible for
the outcomes of such decisions. In order to overcome the nasty habit of procrastinating, examine why you do it, and weigh out the various pros and cons of putting off the things you should be doing immediately. This is a great exercise, and will make anyone more productive. It’s likely that you’ll realize you're procrastinating more than you think, and that it is doing you more harm than good. If you are having trouble changing your behavior, even though you are making an effort to do so, Psychology Today recommends cognitive behavioral therapy.
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA
PROCRASTINATION We’ve all procrastinated a time or two, but according to an article in Psychology Today by Hara Estroff Morano, 20% of us are chronic procrastinators, who “consistently avoid difficult tasks and deliberately look for distractions.” And that statistic could be much higher amongst college students. Even though we all fall into this trap every now and then and procrastinate a little bit, constant, or "chronic" procrastination is self destructive. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
After deciding against studying medicine, Navid Zolfaghari needed to find another career path. His passion for entrepreneurship along with his love for the show American Idol led him to establish TriFame, a website for artists who want to expose their talent. Navid states that although only one person may win on the show, there are many “American Idols”; and on TriFame, everyone with talent has the ability to express their work. TriFame utilizes the concept of “15 Minutes of Fame” because it gives the opportunity to all of its users to stand in the spotlight and show off their skills. Like every other company, TriFame had to overcome its share of hurdles in the early days. Financing the company was difficult, but through support from his family, Navid was able to find sufficient funds to grow and develop TriFame. Despite any difficulties that may come his way, Navid says that if you find your passion (as he has) it motivates you to keep doing your thing. So for those of you who want to migrate from singing in the shower to singing on stage, be sure to check out TriFame.
Andres Correa is a graduate of FIU, where he studied marketing. His immersion in the college culture helped him find his niche: he runs an as of yet unnamed company that sells fraternity paddles. Andres buys paddles wholesale, then sells them to students at a markup. A small business for now, Andres has been working tirelessly to expand it and seems to be finding slow success. His strategy is to offer the same quality products as greek-life retailers, at lower prices. Being a member of two fraternities himself, Andres felt that this was the perfect business for him. One of the difficulties Andres points out was having to manage a business while he was still a student (as balancing school, a company and extracurricular activities can get very trying). But Andres proved that with good time management, anything is possible. One of the entrepreneurs that Andres admires is a fellow Brother of Alpha Kappa Psi, Giovanni Fernandez, who runs a catering company called El Rey De La Paella. Giovanni has helped Andres become a successful entrepreneur. In the future, Andres hopes his company will go national.

University of South Florida students boycott chick-fil-a Theresa Woods, student University of South Florida
Students in Tallahassee Remain Divided despite efforts by fsu and FAMU to increase collaboration Antonio Velez, student FAMU 22
At the FIU Biscayne Bay campus, protesting is limited to a small area that is hidden on the side of a parking lot. This area doesn’t get much pedestrian traffic and recently, the FIU student newspaper has sparked an ironic debate over the constitutionality of this so-called free speech zone. “A university is supposed to be a marketplace of ideas,” explains Robert Richards of Penn State. “When you limit the free in-
terchange of ideas, that is problematic.” FIU Student, and Beacon writer, Kelly Malambri, makes the argument that, “Pushing students away from the areas in which there is a potential for controversy infringes upon students’ First Amendment rights.” Administrators at other Universities that enforce ‘free speech zones’ (including UM, UCF, USF, & FSU) are sure to be paying attention to the escalating debate.
Emory University’s initiative for a “green” and environmentally friendly campus has really paid off. Recently, the school received the first “LEED Showcase Award for Innovation in Business” from the Atlanta Business Chronicle (LEED is an acronym meaning Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.) The campus boasts sixteen green buildings, two of which are freshman dorms, Evans and Few. These two residence halls were certified as LEED Gold buildings by the United States Green Building Council. In addition to pioneering energy efficient
building projects, this university urges its students to maintain a sustainable lifestyle. Some highlights of their program include restricting the number of campus residents who can have vehicles, providing ample bicycle storage, alternative-fuel powered transportation and, the crowning jewel, a solar powered bio-retention pond that collects rainwater, filters it, and pumps it into buildings to use when flushing toilets. Emory is proving to other universities that “Going Green” is both feasible and practical and their openness to environmental innovation is an excellent example.
On a campus with strong opinions about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights, it’s not shocking to find that Chick-Fil-A is being boycotted. University of South Florida students are currently skipping their chicken sandwich fixes in the Marshall Center after learning that the chain has donated more than $1.1 million to organizations that have anti-gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender agendas. Kindell Workman, president of P.R.I.D.E Alliance, the largest LGBT organization on-cam-
pus, feels that it is against USF’s policy of nondiscrimination to support Chick-Fil-A by keeping it in the Marshall Center. “USF is one of the most phenomenal universities when it comes to the LGBT community,” she says, and questions how this is politically correct. Despite the fact that Don Perry, VicePresident of Corporate Relations for the chain, says that Chick-Fil-A is not “anti-anything,” many students hope that USF will stand as an example and encourage other universities to boycott.
Tallahassee is home to two major universities, Florida State and Florida A&M. In the past, both colleges were segregated. FSU was considered the elite university with more career paths than FAMU. Unfortunately, the past continues to haunt both universities. Today, FSU remains predominately white and FAMU continues to be known as an HBCU. The campuses are practically on top of one another yet many FSU students have never been to FAMU. Some students at FAMU even call FSU “the school across the tracks.” This is illogical because students of both schools commute to the same apartments, restaurants and shopping centers. It’s as if there is an unspoken division between them. When there is tension between two universities, competition erupts and students feel they need to defend their institution. Students at FAMU often hear people say students at FSU receive a better education. One must wonder is race is playing a role.
\\ summer \\ volume 3 issue 4
"One night while driving I got into a verbal argument with a white guy and when he drove past me he yelled, 'get a better education!' I assume he said that because of my FAMU tag," said student Julius Walker. Bianca Chase, a nursing student, feels differently."There are no real issues between students at FAMU or FSU; people just seem to be more comfortable around their own race. It's just the way it is,"she said. Recently the two universities held the 3 rd Annual State of the Student Summit in an effort to improve relations between students at FSU and FAMU. Major issues affecting the ethically diverse institutions were discussed. Hopefully FSU and FAMU can move past any historical stereotypes. They both certainly offer students exceptional educations and coming together in a collaborative effort to learn and grow is what it's all about.

The brothers of Delta Upsilon are undergoing a national membership review after allegations of a “roofie drinking game.” Delta Upsilon has been barred from social events where alcohol may be present. The allegations of the “roofie drinking game” come from a series of complaints filed by the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma. It all went down as the sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma were heading to a pirate themed social at Vain, a popular club in downtown Orlando. Kappa Kappa Gamma had arranged for a bus to transport them and brothers from Delta Upsilon to the social. While on the bus, several witnesses allege that Delta Upsilon members had multiple 2-liter bottles
of Coca Cola mixed with alcohol, even though there was a strict no alcohol policy on the bus. According to a written statement from a sister at Kappa Kappa Gamma, whose name was redacted from the report, she alleges she was told by a Delta Upsilon member that “before socials, my brothers and I like to roofie random bottles of alcohol and pass it around to girls on the bus not knowing which one it is and guessing at the end.” An investigation is being launched by UCF police. However, there is no indication that anyone in Delta Upsilon or Kappa Kappa Gamma was dangerously intoxicated or raped. Delta Upsilon denies ever having played such a “game.”
University of Miami students are lucky to attend college in such a vibrant, trendy city. And now, we are officially “in” on the biggest culinary trend in years: compact, portable restaurants with exciting, unique themes, and delicious fare (aka gourmet food trucks.) Over the past six months, a food truck craze has inundated the City of Miami. Nearly every night of the week, “food truck rallies” occur in every corner of the city, and their popularity is snowballing. Some local favorites are Latin Burger and Taco, The Fish Box, Dim Ssam a Go Go, and Miss Cheezious. The trucks use social networking to post their every move, so you can always find your favorite’s loca-
tion. Food trucks have been slowed down by permitting issues, and the need to congregate in locations that suit large crowds and dozens of trucks. But that certainly hasn’t put the brakes on this movement. In fact, new trucks are hitting the scene every day. Some notable entries include Mr. Good Stuff, serving up treats “stuffed with love” such as slow cooked meats and spicy cajun waffle fries, as well as Miso Hungry and Sugar Rush. (Food truck names tend to be creative and self-explanatory.) You know you’re sick of Chartwells, so find your local rally and get to tasting. Hopefully, this trend becomes a permanent fixture in the South Florida lifestyle.

1 – James blake
ELECTRONIC | Whether you’ve been an avid dubstep fan since its inception in the late 90s or still believe it to be a newfangled dance move, Bristish electro-genius James Blake’s self-titled debut release will surely sweep you off your feet – or at least get your body moving. Incorporating romantic piano accents and deep, pulse-driven bass into his sensual sound will woo even the hardest of hearts. Yes, his music is often classified as dubstep but blurs the very definition. Even after just one rewind of “The Wilhelm Scream” and some self-evaluation, I’ve fallen in love. Blake’s vocal talent is often easily compared to that of artists like D’Angelo and Seal, but his composition is his own. The marriage of soul and sensuality on “Limit To Your Love” will make toes curl and hearts break while the vocal distortion and harsh, grainy mood set by album opener “Unluck” showcases Blake’s genre-dipping range.
PICTURE ME Documentary | The unapologetic world of the modeling industry is as tough to break into as it is to survive in. Luckily enough for then18-year-old Sara Ziff, getting discovered on the streets of her New York City stomping grounds was all she needed. From there, she began her jet-set life into the modeling realm, and her supportive and loyal boyfriend was there to document her rise to the top from beginning to end. Revealing and entertaining, Picture Me gives a raw, behind-the-scenes look at modeling that even shows like America’s Next Top Model don’t give. Watch as the engaging and charming all-American Ziff climbs to the top, and even hear commentary from other young models who shed light on modeling’s dark truths (sexual assault, degradation, superficiality etc.) that sometimes go unspoken. Honest and profound, this award-winning documentary shows that there’s more to modeling than the glitz and glamour of the runway.

2 – Gentleman
Reggae/Reggae Fusion/Dancehall Calling all Marley aficionados and fans of Collie Buddz – German Reggae artist Gentleman presents listeners with a nice fusion of reggae and pop on his Changes EP, and the overall message here is clear: let go and have no worries. “I can see the rain, falling on my window pane,” he sings at the beginning of “Changes”, going on to later sing, “Go build a better tomorrow.” Optimism is prominent both lyrically and musically. While the first two songs provide smooth and mellow laid-back reggae to relax to, the third and final song, “To the Top”, ups the momentum with the addition of a little dance floor synth-pop flavor and gives listeners something to dance and release some stress to. An abundance of positive vibes make Changes an uplifting listen for a rainy day. Turn it up and just glide.

3 – Collie buddz
Reggae/Pop/Dancehall | Who can forget Collie Buddz’s “Come Around”, a staple on mainstream urban radio that had bodies moving and heads bobbing for months back in 2006? After what seemed to be a small hiatus, the New Orleans-born/Bermuda-raised reggae artist has returned with Playback. The LP, which is hosted on DatPiff.com, picks up where Collie Buddz left off and is perhaps better than the debut album itself. There’s a nice fusion of mainstreamfriendly pop heard throughout the first half of the album, with reggae/dancehall roots coming into play around the advent of “Serious”. The mix makes for a blissful listen, especially songs like “Holiday,” whose lyrics (“Going on a holiday / yes, I need to get away”) make you feel as much elated as you’ll want to sing along. Never stale, this musical effort paints a picture of paradise.
4 – Sims
Underground Hip-Hop | It took Doomtree emcee Sims six years to release Bad Time Zoo, the masterpiece follow up to his debut album Lights Out Paris, but fans ain’t mad at him. It was worth it to wait six years for him to put together a dynamite 14-track banger so lyrically sound listeners can taste the resentment Sims (once again) successfully delivers. Not surprisingly, a collaboration with label-mate P.O.S. appears on the record in “Too Much” where the two flow so seamlessly that you wish they’d just do an album together and get it over with. Long time friend and production pundit Lazerbeak supplied the beats on every track, lending his now highly sought after skills laced with stinging snares and synth-tastic overhauls. “Love My Girl” is either a sardonic commentary on most emotionless relationships or Sims wrestling with feelings for the enemy, but either way, it’s an album favorite. Here’s hoping for another six year slam dunk.

5 – Loose Girl
book | Teenage curiosity grows into sexual indiscretion in Kerry Cohen’s real-life tale of promiscuity. Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity details her encounters with men during her youth, speaking of her need to feel wanted in an honest voice that all women can relate to, even if their sexual past does not mirror Cohen’s. Detailing her evolution from an eleven year-old girl discovering the power of her sexuality to a grown women facing her demons and finding herself, Cohen tells a truly American tale of finding one’s self through mistakes, trials and triumphs. This is a book “for everyone who was that girl, for everyone who knew that girl,” and “for everyone who wondered who that girl was.” This memoir is best read all at once, because you won’t be able to put it down.
6 – Water for elephants
book | Don’t judge this book by its cover – yes, it’s a man in a bright red coat heading into a circus tent, but the circus only provides the setting for this unpredictable story. Sara Gruen’s historical novel Water for Elephants, which occupied the number three slot on the NYTimes’ Bestsellers List, was published in 2006 but is only now getting its due acclaim. With a theatrical debut set for April, Jacob Jankowski could quickly become a household name. After his parents are killed in a freak car accident, the veterinary student headed for his final exams makes a U-Turn and jumps on the next train – destination nowhere. Told from the perspective of ninety-three year old Jankowski as he wastes away in a nursing home, the reader is given an inside look into life in the circus complete with a sadistic animal trainer, an elephant named Rosie with human characteristics, and a love affair with the show’s married starlet. 7 – ANDREW Jenks
TV SHOW | Last year, young filmmaker Andrew Jenks made his MTV debut with World of Jenks. Andrew, who dropped out of NYU at the age of 19 to become a documentarian, follows different young people and attempts to assimilate himself into their unique lives. Season 1 found Andrew on Brooklyn street corners with an up-and-coming rap artist, hitting the field with a high school football star, and attempting stand-up with an aspiring comedian. One of the more notable episodes found him dodging the Cuban mafia in a Miami farming district known for illegal horse slaughtering with a female animal rights activist (who is incredibly bad-ass). Jenks’ goal is to provide insight into the modern experience of what he has dubbed “The Greatest Generation” and he does a superb job. He moves in with his subject for about a week and follows their every move during that time. World of Jenks also evokes intense emotions in both its subjects and its audience. Andrew makes his subjects relatable to any viewer, so his audience can find common ground with whomever he is documenting. Jenks’ first project, Room 335, recorded his experience moving into an assisted living facility. It was award-winning and critically acclaimed. World of Jenks is equally as life changing. Andrew takes his projects seriously and his openness to new experiences allows viewers to clearly see the many lessons he has learned from his subjects (quite a feat in 20 minute segments!) As Kid Cudi croons “I’ve got some issues that nobody can see and all of these emotions are pourin’ out of me; I bring them all to light for you; it’s only right; this is the soundtrack to my life” in the opening credits, you will be irrevocably drawn in to this brilliant documentation of contemporary coming-of-age tales. So, this summer when your searching the web for a great show to stream, check out World of Jenks on MTV.com.
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Documentary | Before experiencing the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, most Bansky fans believe the movie to be a selfcritical film about the artist and his work. But right from the start, Bansky (anonymous under his oversized hoodie) admits that Exit set off to document his life and work but ended up as more of a biographical story of Thierry Guetta, a Frenchman who becomes obsessed with street art. Like most documentaries, the cinematography left me dizzy at times from attempting to keep my eyes steady while the amateur cameraman’s picture darted from side to side, but its stunning art installations are incomparable. Even before its Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary this year, there were rumors of its authenticity, referred to as a “mockumentary” and even a “prankumentary.” Despite all this , having access to some of the world’s most well-hidden graffiti pieces was worth every minute – all 87 of them.

The performance wave-riding skimboard is ready to handle any wave or trick, especially the big stuff. It is constructed with polyester resin, carbon, and PVC foam for a light yet durable board. At 3/4” thick it is more buoyant than than any board I’ve ever ridden, including Exile’s Paulie model. Even better, the width of the nose and tail are thinned out, enabling sick maneuverability and stability on the line.

$189 | Designed in California and made in Italy out of injection-molded TR-90, Klay is built for protection from sun, wind, water and dirt. These are the most comfortable glasses I’ve ever worn, and the buried Variflex™ nose pads further the comfort. The clarity is razor sharp, and even better than my Prada’s. They have powerful, internal cam-driven hinges, which come standard, as do the proprietary SR-91 polarized lenses – which are elite. Well worth the money.
6– Silver Surfer Vaporizer
$349 | The Silver Surfer Herbal Vaporizer is the only vaporizer with an all ceramic heating element. Air is inhaled through a small hole in the glass heater cover; the ceramic heats the air to vaporizing temperature; and air passes through the SSV's glass heater cover and into the glass wand. Lovers of R&B/Soul will be glad to know that Raphael Saadiq has been in the studio and has a new album on the rise. Stone Rollin’ will be out on May 10th. Perhaps one of the year’s most anticipated of releases, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way will be in stores on May 23rd and considering the short amount of time it took the title single to reach #1 on the charts and the impact of her debut album, her sophomore compilation is sure to be a masterpiece to look forward to. Death Cab for Cutie has also been working on music, and will be releasing Codes and Keys on May 31st. On the movie front, Fast Five, the fifth film in the Fast and Furious series, hits theaters on April 29th. y s k n a B it’s midnight in New York city and a mysterious man in
a dark hoodie creeps out of an alley wearing a black skimask. A can of spraypaint and cardboard stencils stick out of his pockets, and he’s holding a box-cutter with the grimiest hands I've ever seen. Tonight, this man is on a mission to make a statement, right under the nose of the NYPD. Despite being called a vandal, a jerk, and a terrorist, the mysterious man behind the mask is an artist of epic proportions. He goes by the pseudonym Banksy, and although he has
30

directed his own documentary, been featured in a film, and interviewed numerous times through email, nobody has ever revealed Banksy’s true identity to the public.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
When his documentary was nominated for an Oscar in February, the world waited for a grand spectacle on live TV. But, all Banksy fans got from the event was frustration that his film only won 2nd place, and an ear-full of sarcastic jokes by Justin Timberlake (in which he claimed to actually be Banksy). Although often classified as a street artist, in reality, Banksy has transcended the streets, left the alleys, and infiltrated highly-secured facilities, museums, and even mainstream media in an effort to make profound artistic statements in front of a worldwide audience. “By hijacking the established system of art exhibition, Banksy is drawing attention to its shortcomings,“ Says Jeff Howe in an article he wrote for Wired Magazine in August of 2005. Whatever you call it: Hijacking, infiltrating, sneaking-in, whatever, Banksy’s ability to pull off elaborate covert missions to install his art wherever he wants, is unprecedented.
Installations in Secured Facilities In 2006, in Anaheim, Banksy snuck an inflatable doll dressed as a Guantanamo Bay detainee into Disneyland; he installed it (handcuffs, orange jumpsuit, facemask and all) inside the fence of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride, and caused an absolute uproar at the park. Banksy claims he changed t-shirts in the bathroom, took off his hat and... “Went on Pirates of the Caribbean”. Although ‘Mickey Mouse Security’ was frantically searching for him, his face was not on camera, so they had no idea who they were looking for. In what seems to be one of Banksy’s closest calls with authorities, the artist managed to escape unnoticed. More comically, at the London Zoo, he
painted the words, “We’re bored of fish” inside the penguin enclosure (which had seven foot walls). At the Bristol Zoo, he shared a similar message inside the elephant enclosure, writing “I want out. This place is too cold. Keeper smells. Boring, boring, boring.” Even more impressively (although at quiteless risk of stepping in shit or being attacked by animals) Banksy has hung his own artwork on the walls of some of the World’s most renowned museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Often not noticed for hours, Banksy’s sneaky installations mocked the artwork of the exhibits, often replicating and slightly modifying the style of the exhibit and making some profound statement about modern culture. For example, Banksy snuck a re-sketched version of a primitive cave drawing into the historic Gallery 49 of the British Museum; in Banksy’s cave-drawing, a human figure was depicted hunting wildlife while pushing a shopping cart. While most of the museums removed his work from their galleries, the British Museum added Banksy’s cave-drawing to their permanent collection.
Infiltrating Mainstream Media to Mock it In early fall of 2006, Banksy targeted Paris Hilton’s debut CD, Paris, as the platform for his next big statement. When the album was released, Banksy replaced more than 500 copies of Paris with a Banksy version (with remixes by Danger Mouse, and his own redone cover art). In Banksy’s cover art, Paris Hilton was apparently topless; in some copies,
feature

her head was replaced by a dog’s head; and in others there was a group of homeless people in the background with the added caption, “90% of success is just showing up”. The stunt was executed in 48 record stores, and the CD’s tracks were re-assigned new titles such as “Why am I Famous?”, “What Have I Done?” and “What Am I For?”. That stunt was bold, but Banksy’s most prolific infiltration of mainstream media was in 2010, when he was able to sneak a one minute scene into the third episode of the 22nd season of The Simpson’s, without consent from FOX executives. Although claiming to have never met Banksy personally, Al Jean, the executive producer of The Simpson's, was Banksy’s point of contact in the stunt. In the scene, after the couch sequence, the show cuts to a sweat shop in Asia: There are kids carrying toxic screen prints to make t-shirts, and rats are carrying off human remains of what appear to be dead workers. Bart dolls are being stuffed with foam made from shredded cats, then tossed into a cart pulled by a polar bear; there is a guy using a dead dolphin’s tongue to glue boxes of merchandise – and best of all, he’s standing right next to another guy who is cutting holes in DVDs with the horn of a depressed unicorn. It then pans to the 20 th Century Fox logo, and the episode begins. Banksy has set quite a high-bar for himself when it comes to mocking mainstream media, and we can only hope that he soon pulls off something else as significant as his Paris or Simpson’s stunts. Banksy has a magical way of incorporating the space surrounding his art into the artwork he creates. Banksy’s best known graffiti work exemplifies this knack.

the world of the arts
Banksy Critics Banksy’s work often criticizes the very framework upon which democracy, capitalism, and consumerism are based; so he obviously has his critics, but perhaps to his own chagrin. Wired Magazine notes that “critics see [Banksy] as nothing more than an over-hyped vandal.” One old British conservative in Exit Through the Gift Shop calls Banksy a, “fucking ass hole.” Worse, Brian Sewell, claims that “they” should have killed Banksy at birth. As quoted by Caroline Davies in The Guardian, Brian said : “Any fool who can put paint on canvas or turn a cardboard box into a sculpture is lauded. Banksy should have been put down at birth. It’s no good as art, drawing or painting. His work has no virtue. It’s merely the sheer scale of his impudence that has given him so much publicity...the art world has gone absolutely crazy”. But Banksy’s haters have not hindered his work from influencing the worldwide art community. After Banksy’s premier show in LA, the value of work produced by street artists skyrocketed. Some
32
of the most elite art galleries in Europe and in the US began including street art in their rotating collections, and some of them even added street art to their permanent exhibits. “Some of our oldest collectors, who only have collections of Picasso’s, they own Banksy’s [now],” sais Acoris Andipa, director of the elite Andipa Gallery. The public’s hype for street-art after Banksy’s LA show was like a disease to the artist, as he had been slapped into the international spotlight while still trying to remain anonymous. It would immediately become much more difficult for Banksy to fly under the radar, so to speak. Banksy later slammed the art-world’s commercialization of street-art in Exit Through the Gift Shop, when he said: “So then these famous auction houses were selling street art, and everything was going a bit crazy; and all the sudden, it was about the money. .. [but] its not about the hype, and its not about the money!” Banksy explains the meaning behind the art-world’s willingness to capitalize on the street movement: “Maybe it means art is a bit of a joke...”

Banksy’s Boys A number of internationally known artists claim to be boys with Banksy. In Exit through the Gift Shop, face-blurred and voiced-over, Banksy admits to having worked with Shepard Ferry (the artist responsible for the iconic red white and blue Obama marketing material which helped him win the ‘08 election.) Shepard was an early bloomer in the west coast street art movement, having got his start in the early 1990’s. Before his historic work for Obama, Shepard was best known for tagging an over-commercialized image of Andre the Giant along with the words OBEY throughout LA (with a stencil and spray-paint). As is usually the case with street art, for years, nobody outside had a clue what the symbol meant, or who was responsible for tagging it on thousands of walls in the area. While observing the public’s response to his work in the 90’s, Shepard Ferry began to fully understand the power of curiosity, and the impact it had on people’s perception of power. Years later, Shepard would be quoted in Exit Through the Gift Shop saying: “I like the idea of the more [it’s] out there, the more important it seems; [and] the more important it seems, the more people want to know what it is; [so] they ask each other, and it gains real power from perceived power." In his mysterious career, Banksy has personified this phenomenon that Shepard Farry was obsessed with in the 90’s. By remaining anonymous, creating confusion, and garnering perceived power, Banksy has built actual power. Love him or hate him, almost everyone is enthralled by Banksy’s mysterious ways, and those who claim to have met him seem to have been drastically inspired by him.
Being anonymous Ivan Massow is a British filmmaker who was fortunate enough to get the rare opportunity to meet Banksy while filming Banksy’s Coming for Dinner. In the hour long film, Banksy attends an upscale dinner party with celebrity Joan Collins as if to make a calculated statement about the ridiculousness of their super-high-class society. Banksy’s face was blurred for the entire hour film; his voice was modified to protect his identity; and quite honestly, the film sort of sucked. But in Banksy’s Coming for Dinner, Ivan Mossow offers unique insight into Banksy’s personality. He says, “The really interesting thing about Banksy, is that in complete contrast to normal young artists, who themselves become the art and pounce around being shocking, [Banksy has] removed himself from the public eye and allowed anyone to be Banksy.” In doing so, Banksy has put the emphasis on his work. In making the film, Ivan was given the unique chance to begin understanding the man behind Banksy’s mask. Ivan admits to wanting to expose Banksy for who he really was: “To begin with, I was thinking
feature
\\\
it would be nice to show his face. To be the producer or the director that brings Banksy out of the closet so to speak – and lets us see what he looks like. But really what fun is that?... Isn’t it far more interesting that [you] haven’t got a clue? He’s kinda the Robin Hood of art...just disappearing into the background.” In Mossow’s film, when questioned about whether he’s staying anonymous simply because the popularity of mystery increases the value of his work, Banksy contends: “I’m not doing it for that purpose. And that’s one of the reasons I did this film, because I think there are people who think this [anonymity] is some kind of a device for me to sell or to make my work more popular. “ For most of his fans, the fun is in the mystery, and Banksy agrees with that; in Exit Through the Gift Shop, he says : “If I came out, and was on every magazine cover and every chat show, it would kinda’ spoil it, wouldn’t it?” Although he remains anonymous, Banksy does have a PR firm that facilitates the sale of his work, and handles email interview requests. Jori White, his London PR agent, talks about Banksy as a client in a giddy and excited manner, “It's an interesting challenge, because in fact, what we’ve managed to do is create this enigma about him, that has made his work worth more because people are enthralled by the mystery...It’s great fun,” she says. “This is exactly the opposite of what we do for all our other clients, we make all these people well known and famous, and we don’t have to do that with him. It’s a great strategy.” “I’m just walking around being me...” says Banksy. He pointed out a few other reasons why he will never reveal his identity in a rare email correspondence with ABC Reporter Nick Watt: “I haven’t gone public because I don’t want to go to court, I don’t want to get prosecuted, and most of all, I don’t want to disappoint people with my miserable face.”
the message of his career Nick Watt from ABC says that: “What Banksy has achieved in our celebrity obsessed age is a magnification of his own celebrity by hiding from it. That, I suppose, is art in itself; and perhaps more of a statement than any he has dobbed on concrete or canvas.” But it seems the truth is that Banksy cares less about “magnifying his own celebrity” and more about making statements. He wants people to focus on his work, and the messages he’s conveying through them, rather than concentrate on his celebrity status. As a collective, Banksy’s art mocks modern society’s tendency to be influenced by mystery and confusion – and he literally personified this phenomenon, he himself becoming the art... a secretive story told through a never-ending stream of tags.

Issue \\ Today There are over 466 Smoke-Free campuses in the US, including the University of Michigan and the University of Florida, according to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation. FIU implemented their own smoking ban recently. Now, the trend is moving to Emory. But, is banning smoking altogether on college campuses necessary for public health or does it infringe on student rights? Paula Anderson, Emory’s Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education, explains that school officials created a task force to study the feasibility of a smoke-free campus. The task force is exploring potential obstacles and benefits to new smoking policies. They are planning on gathering student and faculty input via a website before making any formal decisions. “Allowing the use of tobacco on Emory’s campus runs counter to our knowledge of the significant health risks, especially in light of Emory’s role as an institution of higher education and as a health care provider,” Anderson says. Currently, Emory’s smoking policy prohibits smoking within 25 feet of campus buildings. However, a quick stroll around campus reveals students lighting up where they please. Anderson directed me to “How We Do It: Promoting and Implementing Tobacco Free,” an article by Ty Patterson and Ferdinand Schlapper of Ozarks Technical Community College and Boise State University respectively. In it, Patterson explains, “Partial bans and restricted smoking does not work, it is like having a no-peeing section in the swimming pool.” When implementing an extreme
38
program such as this, legality comes into question. After all, tobacco is a legal product for adults. Is it not the right of adults to smoke should they choose to do so? Anderson cited Schlapper and explained, “Tobacco is the only legal product that when used properly, as directed, leads to serious illness and premature death… Court rulings maintain that smokers do not have the legal right to expose others to secondhand smoke.” Smoking affects both smokers and those around them negatively. According to the American Cancer Society, there are an estimated 46,000 heart diseaserelated deaths each year in the US among non-smokers who live with smokers. 3,400 die from lung cancer contracted from inhaling second-hand smoke. And, there are more than 750,000 middle ear infections in children exposed to smoking. Even the lesser-known third-hand smoke, the lingering gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing long after they have extinguished their tobacco, can cause harm. Banning smoking on campus is a polarizing issue. On one hand, smokers should have the right to light up if they choose. After sitting through a three hour lecture, the idea of having to go off-campus for a nicotine fix is absurd to smokers. Perhaps universities should implement such smoking bans in phases, tracking effectiveness and popularity, before making such a drastic policy change. Or, perhaps it is the responsibility of universities to regulate anything that may adversely affect the health of the student body.

Elderly \\ Wreaking Havoc The roads are getting more dangerous. And, it’s not due to an increase in drunk driving, or structural issues - it’s because of the aging population! Ever been stuck in the fast lane behind a grey-haired woman going 40mph, nearly being sideswiped by the cars trying to pass you? Been cut off by an elderly man who decided to make a right turn from the left lane? In Miami, an old person shifts to drive instead of reverse and drives through a building on a weekly basis. A man in Massachusetts recently went outside to discover his over-the-hill mother-in-law had driven over and into his ABOVE GROUND pool. It’s tough for people to grow old and many seniors adamantly refuse to give up their independence by surrendering their drivers’ license. Physicians are supposed to take them away when an old person has physical limitations that impede their ability to operate a motor vehicle, but many don’t want to piss off and lose their lucrative Medicare patients, so they don’t bother. And, you can wait as long as eight years without having to take an eye exam at the DMV to renew your license. So next time you see a patch of gray hair just barely peeking over the driver’s seat of the car in front of you, steer clear.

RELIGION \\ Nuwaubianism While it’s a catch all term, usually not used by its followers, Nuwaubianism covers people who follow the teachings of Dwight York. York, who has more aliases than weed has euphemisms, was a musician, author and more notably, a convicted child molester who is due to be released from prison in 2119. The Nuwaubians (mouthful, huh?) believe some blacks are superior to others, believe certain races were “accidents,” and York believed he was from the planet Rizq. In essence, he’s an opportunist who raped and trafficked underage girls all under the guise of some master plan only he truly comprehends, since he’s not of this world. This is probably the greatest argument for taxing religion since those youtube videos of Scientology proceedings were leaked
DRUG \\ Methylenedioxypyrovalerone MDPV, or Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, has been around since 2004, but has only become mainstream in the past year. The drug, being sold under the guise of “bath salts” in the United States, has stimulant effects (similar to those of cocaine or methamphetamine) when snorted or ingested. Known on the street as “Magic Super Coke,” this research chemical causes users to experience euphoria, motivation, increased wakefulness, and sexual arousal. It sells for about $25 per half gram, about the same as cocaine. Don’t be too tempted though, the negative side effects definitely outweigh the positive. Users report very high levels of “fiending” or the impulsive need to re-dose when the drug starts to wear off. It also dangerously increases blood pressure and heart rate, and causes nausea, insomnia, confusion, and severe delusions. Since it is so new, there have been no studies of the long-term effects of MDPV use. Additionally, the drug was quickly banned in Florida before Spring Break 2011 because of homicidal psychotic episodes being linked to the use of MDPV. It is now a controlled substance in Florida and Louisiana. For the rest of the US, it is simply a “drug of concern.” Never take drugs recreationally; above article for educational purposes only.
What the public calls news… News is informative. News is interesting. News is fucking soft. In the era of political correctness and pansy bullshit (i.e. NPR’s new drama because one of the higher ups called the Tea Party racist, because, well, they are) people are clamoring for so called balanced news. Here’s the thing, the news doesn’t have to devote time to idiots and liars so they can give their side of the story. They should, but there seems to be this need to have even coverage, so much so that it straight-jackets the very individuals trying to publicize major issues. What’s worse is the selective nature of it. Sure we’ll have both major parties speak, but do you want to put a damn rapist on camera and have him defend his right to do the unspeakable? A resounding no on that one. And why? Because he’s wrong. People, most anyway, would agree. And yet, when it comes to issues that are clear cut and dismissed as differences in opinion, there is a devotion to preserving, even defending the point of view. The media, writers, bloggers, everyone, needs to wake up and realize that they know something is up. If something is wrong, like let’s say a certain governor bullshitting on the phone with a prank caller about essentially shitting on his constituents, there’s no defending that! Defend his right to speak as he pleases, but realize the man is wrong, and say it. I don’t need to hear him explain, he did plenty already (also, side note, hidden cameras and misdirection are not journalism, for the record). Here we are, knee deep in the new millennium and what do we have to show for it? Incredible advancements to be sure, but there is so much derision and pettiness. Is that all we can spit up? The best we can do (we in this case being the human race, yeah I know lofty)? I usually try and inject some humor to soften the blow of my rants, but in the end, this is becoming fucked on such a grand scale that it gets harder and harder to find the humor in it. In the end, I know this generation will come out on top. What it shouldn’t become is a waiting game for the higher ups to all get old and die off, rather, it should involve questioning and taking them on directly, putting our own ideas out there, to take root, and calling people on their bullshit. Only a fool suffers a fool, so the next time someone’s wrong, don’t dismiss it as a difference of opinion, have a discussion, but please, call people on their bullshit. It’s gone on far too long…

The Grateful Dead were a one-hit wonder. Their only top 10 hit was "Touch of Gray."
A woman keeps asking her husband why her boobs are so small. ''Does this shirt make them look bigger? Does this one make them look smaller?'' she asks. The next day her husband buys her a mirror. Before bed, she always looks in the mirror and asks her husband, ''Does this shirt make them look bigger? Does this one make them look smaller?'' Finally he gets so annoyed that he says, ''I know how to make them larger!'' ''How!?!?!?'' she asks. ''Take a bunch of toilet paper and rub it in between your boobs.'' ''Well how long does it take?'' she asks. ''They should expand over a few years,'' he answers. ''How did you know that?'' she wonders. He quips, ''I dunno, but it sure worked for your ass, didn't it?'''

Please take caution and realize that you may very well kill your partner if you try this. Also keep in mind that "broken penis" is an actual medical condition.

Each person goes head to head with someone from the opposing team. The person next to you can only drink once you are done with your beer. Go down the line and back. For starters, try the fried mushrooms and potato pancakes. They are culinary perfection. Then, move on to the authentic schnitzel, sausage, and sauerkraut. The wide range of beers to choose from may seem daunting, but the friendly, knowledgeable staff will help you make the perfect choice. They’ll even let you sample! Long wooden tables and a central gazebo add to the authentic Oktoberfest ambiance of Mr. Dunderbak’s. Don’t leave without stopping in the market. Wood Fired Pizza, first and foremost, has amazing pizza. With thin crust, excellent cheese and fresh sauce, patrons find themselves hard pressed to ask for more. The selection of appetizers and desserts live up to the standard set by the flagship dish, and the knowledgeable staff is more than willing to help guests select their meal. A full-service bar, quiet jazz and soft lighting gives Wood Fired a smooth and relaxed atmosphere, and with good music and excellent food, customers leave with little to stress about. Wood Fired is a bit more expensive than ordering from Domino’s but the better pizza and ambiance is, in my opinion, completely worth it.
