ART Director \\This is our style evolving\\ I am no longer the Content Director of this magazine; as you notice, in November, Vince’s creativity was demanded within the Content Team, and he and I chose to switch jobs. I am happy with the switch. Employed now as the Art Director, it is my mission to bring order and structure to the team that designs this magazine, and assure that the messages of our writers (our student contributors) are communicated effectively. As a team, we recognized significant problems with the previous designs and sought to find a solution. We hoped to create the flow you feel in the magazines you love—synergy between articles and art—while keeping it unrestrained. To achieve this, we executed a three month re-design of the back\slash template that began in November, through which we simultaneously tightened the layout, boosted the quality of our photos by over twenty percent, and began to create more pull between the pages of our magazine. We refined our bylines, pages numbers, and spacings, and it’s still not perfect. But it’s time to print. The cover unveiling our re-design is a photograph of a hand painting by our publishing company’s Chief Visual Officer, Rodney Jackson ( OBAMA, Acrylic on Wood, 09 ). Because of the high resolution of the photograph and the quality of Rodney's painting, we decided it was time to make the move to higher quality printing; so for this issue we turned to the International firm that printed the Harry Potter Series and Time Magazine’s Princess Dianna

Special Edition (thank you St. Ive's of Hollywood). Seeing the advances that Vince made with back\slash's content (especially the addition of two and three page features), I am absolutely shocked by this issue. I love it; and I want you to know that I appreciate the fact that you kept it. And I hope that you enjoy reading it.

Thank you for living unrestrained,

Mike McCormack

Content Director \\Change\\ I have morphed during the production of this magazine. From shooting photos to almost getting shot (literally) as well as writing articles and rewriting them to fit my new vision of what the content of this magazine should convey. I have evolved from just a student at the University of Miami to the content editor of Backslash magazine. You will see different perspectives of what makes up college life commingled with what lies ahead in the outside world I welcome your feedback. Let me know what you like, dislike and also what you think Backslash should contain. This magazine is for you and about you. I have poured all my energy into delivering what I believe you want to have at your fingertips. Now it’s your turn to continue this mutual relationship

CHURCHILL'S

1 2 0 1 r i c k e l l Av e Miami, FL 33030 Possibly the very antithesis of South Florida’s glitz and glam, Churchill’s cuts Miami’s homogeny like warm butter with its no thrills, no apologies attitude. Going on 30 years in operation, this locals’ bar is privy to any type of scene you want to get into. Despite its location in the heart of Little Haiti, a doubledecker bus, screaming British flag and large silhouette of ol’ Mr. Winston himself stake the claim of an authentic English pub. But it’s their refreshing focus on live music that puts this dive bar in a category all their own. Jazz Jam every Monday brings out musicians of all age, color and creed. The back patio hosts Theatre de Underground where beat boxing, flute playing, spoken word and anything else under the sun can happen. Weekends showcase almost any genre from Hip-Hop and Heavy Metal Screamo to Experimental, Punk and Indie. Churchill’s has also been the host of electronic music festivals, Hialeah-Fest, 420-Fest and the International Noise Convention, just to give you a taste of the sundry entertainment. Perhaps the patrons themselves are the best part of this establishment. Leather clad bikers share the bar with punks in their Chucks and Indie rockers in their checkered scarves and tilted fedoras. Cool, Jamaican guys can be seen playing pool and local workers come by for a bite and a cheap drink. If you’re tired of Coconut Grove’s and South Beach’s same old same old, Churchill’s offers the grimy, honest pledge to funk you are looking for. For weekly show times and listings, visit their website at www.churchillspub.com.

Lost 'N Found 185 NW 36th St 305.576.1008

You would swear John Wayne should be in the building somewhere after stepping out of Miami’s Design District and into Lost and Found Saloon. The Saloon puts a new spin on Southwestern cuisine as their award-winning menu offers vegetarian and vegan friendly plates such as grilled and marinated Portobello and eggplant. If you’re a meat lover though, hold your horses. Lost found offers “Add-on Choices” like BBQ steak, fresh lump crab and mahi-mahi which you can, you guessed it, add on to any sandwich, salad or omelet. Stroll in for their “Giddy-Up” hour Monday through Friday 4pm-7pm, Sunday 5pm-10pm and try their Blueberry Wheat on tap or a glass of their many premium wines. When the Gallery Walk isn’t happening every 2nd Saturday, the Saloon hosts live acoustic jazz outside the restaurant. But really, any night is good to come in, rest your boots and get lost in the ambience.

KEG SOUTH 1 2 8 0 5 SW 1 3 6 t h Av e 305.253.2043 No bigger than a quaint one-bedroom apartment, Keg South boasts year-round Christmas lights, a boisterous crowd and the best burger in Miami. Hidden on a small side street parallel to US-1, this gem of a place is hard to find but easy to win your burger heart over. A beer on tap will run you about $2, and no entrée is over $9. But half of the appeal is the utter charm of the place. There really is no room for a kitchen, so after the bartender serves you a brew, the very same guy will turn 180 towards the small gas grill and cook your burger as well. I strongly suggest getting the half-pounder monster and a side of fries; it will satisfy the most elite of burger connoisseurs.

JOES TIKI BAR 3301 Rickenbacker cswy 305.361.1358

5

For five years in Miami I've driven over the Rickenbacker Causeway on the way to Key Biscayne and only now have I found out about Joe's Tiki Bar. It's hard to miss, but if your heading onto the Key, its just past the Rusty Pelican, on the left. Sometimes the owner parks a mobile sign in front of the entrence, but normally you just have to look for the opening in the trees, and a marina in the distance. With outdoor seating that coulde asilly hold 400 or more, and an esquisite view of the downtown skyline, Joe's just needs to get packed with college studets. They have happy hour every Monday through Friday from four to eight, with two for one beer specials. If you're holding an event any time soon, and your looking for a private venue with great service, fresh seafood, and an even better view, than see Joe; tell him backslash sent you and he'll hook you up with a group rate if your bringing a big party.

MURS for presid interview: it's more than just hip-hop Words: vincent cimilluca UM \\ PHOTOS: kimberly dorphman UM

M

y bass blares in rhythm with time as it quickly ticks down to my interview with MURS. Weaving through traffic on I-95, I have five minutes until I have to be at Churchill’s and from the looks of it, I might somehow pull

this off. I swerve right into the exit only lane and hit the gas in an attempt to cut-off about five cars but as soon as I gun it, the hole closes, the solid white lines appear, and I’m forced to get off at exit four.

A toll and two wrong turns later, the scenery puts on a familiar yet foreign

face; all the windows are boarded up, the only lights come from convenience stores, and the dilapidated shops carry nothing but shadows. I’m in the ghetto. Coming from a suburb in New Jersey, surrounded by the state’s stereotype, I’ve been through and observed many ghettos. Still, I’m very far from every understanding how hard it must be to live in one because as I said, I’m a white kid from the suburbs. I relax, scan the streets for a blue I-95 sign, and continue the cardinal sin of listening to an artist the day of their performance. I can’t help it; I’ve been addicted to his new album MURS For President since its release in September. Every single layer of his songs, especially the lyrics, grabs and transports into a new perspective. This perspective he puts forward chronicles black oppression, while expressing the necessity and utility of fractural improvement and the positive movement of hip-hop. In addition, his message and style help tear down the gold-plated tenets of ignorance and misogyny that have poisoned the rap-game for too long. I feel and now see, through the windshield of my car, all the pain and frustration that

The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park When the snow and hail start to fly north, Florida is a welcomed sanctuary for many music fans that enjoy festivals. Many people who attend jam band festivals, as well as those who love electronica, bluegrass, funk, rock, and soul, continue their travels year-round, touring from one crazy camping party to another. So it is no surprise that Bear Creek Music Festival was a main attraction this past November. Located in Live Oak, FL, in the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, people joined together from the northeast, midwest, even the west-coast, not to mention native Floridians, to celebrate good music and freedom from everyday life. The venue itself is absolutely beautiful, featuring large camping grounds, delicate Spanish moss, two lakes, and one of the most rare and valued treasures one could find at a festival: real toilets and showers. Though some like it dirty, or rather prefer it, these amenities are crucial when it is 5 A.M., 37 degrees, and like the spunion you are, you just can’t seem to identify where your camping ground is located. There are actually a lot of people out at that time, so even if you have no idea where your tent is, you can always find a place of acceptance and comfort at another’s bonfire. And these are the types of people I found at Bear Creek, loving, accepting, and above all, fun! The bands that played that weekend were extremely talented and eclectic, including Zach Deputy. He made his Bear Creek debut and stole the show by performing not just on stage buy also at his campsite a number of times. He is a one-man band, and though he is white, his voice is so soulful, it transcends the stereotype.

University of Miami College of Engineering professor, Jizhou Song and his collaborators John Rogers (Univ. of Illinois) and Professor Yonggang Huang, (Northwestern Univ.) have developed a new design for electronics that can be wrapped around complex shapes, without a reduction in electronic function. The design is focused on semiconductor nanomaterials that offer high stretchability and twistability which can lead to new advances in the fields of eye cameras, smart surgical gloves, body parts, airplane wings, back planes for liquid crystal displays and biomedical devices. The design has received national attention as it has been featured in numerous journals including the December issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS).

BAD TIME SHUTTLE Robert Nevel \\ FIU The professor continued his lecture on interview ethics. In the middle of telling the class about a car accident he once covered he said, "My nerves were totally shot. I had to go and knock on the door. These were this girl's parents... their daughter Sarah Jesse , UM '09

just died less than five hours ago, and - " SLAM. The heavy door to classroom 155 shut loudly. As a proper courtesy, the several kids who took the “Golden Panther Express” shuttle were excused from class early. The class at Biscayne Bay Campus ended at 8:25 p.m. and without catching the 7:55 p.m. to University Park, students were subjected to a lengthy wait until the 9:30 p.m. shuttle. So with the best intentions, the journalism professor allowed early release, cutting off countless lessons for those students. It was that sacrifice, or the cost of over an hour each night for homework or much-needed rest. Shuttle busses are still scheduled for long gaps as 2009 draws nearer. For example, a 10:10 a.m. bus is not followed until 11:20 p.m. shuttle. Some students work after class and the dead time makes life harder for everyone. A floundering economy will likely not allow four or five extra trips and as jobs and salaries for students lessen, the gas needed to drive is not so affordable. It looks like some people will just have to grin and take it as other possibilities are explored such as the environmentally - aimed “GreenRide Carpool Program".

With more than 40 countries being represented and over 130 selections in this year’s repertoire, this year’s MIFF is here to impress. Along with 40 shorts are 97 feature-length films, including four world premieres, 22 North American premieres and 18 U.S. premieres. Dr. Eduardo J. TV ONLINE THE EVOLUTION OF THE 'UGLY DUCKLING' \\ Words carlos alrafo UM \\ PHOTOS vincent cimilluca UM \\

"its gotten to the point that you can log onto youtube from your car on your phone and stream music — with the videos — straight into your car speakers; any song, any time, immediately..." uch like that shy girl that sat behind you in English class, television’s early years were ugly. The Cliff-Notes version involves inefficient technology, patents, litigation and an orgy European and American inventors. Then over the summer (except this summer lasted about 60 years!), the braces came off, the clothes got tighter, and you’re left wondering WTF?! Over that sixty year period, small breakthroughs in lenses, disks, filters, and cathode ray tubes would snowball into the first electronic television sets. I say electronic, because previous sets were bulky and limited by mechanical parts. In fact one of the earliest television sets was a TV/radio combo unit that measured two feet by one foot, and had a screen that measured three square inches. Price tag? A cool $125, which, adjusted for inflation totals a shade over $1000.00 (Cheapskates be happy about today’s prices!). By the late 1930s and early 1940s, the technology and production process involved in manufacturing televisions had reached a point, where mass manufacturing was taking place and rival firms engaged in price wars made television sets affordable for most U.S. households. Yet, many held back on purchasing these sets because content was limited to the occasional test signal. It was at this point that the Federal Radio Commission, which would later become the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), began granting experimental licenses to local stations and began to regulate the transmission standards. The Big Three (NBC, ABC, and CBS) began transmitting 10 minute newscasts, public service announcements, commercials, book readings and plays in limited runs. The average television station broadcasted 15 hours of content in an entire week.

\\ Words jimmy beno FAU \\ \\ PHOTOS TJ Lathrop \\ \\ EDITOR brandon little UM \\ akeboarding was conceived in the mid-1980s San Diego, California. Surfing was “the” thing and everyone who was anyone on the California coast was surfing. Surfers were sometimes towed with a ski rope behind a boat or from a truck on the beach into waves. In 1985, a San Diego surfer named Tony Finn had a vision of what the future might look like and developed the “skurfer” – a hybrid of a water ski and a surfboard. It had surfboard characteristics (i.e. big fins, no straps for your feet) and allowed the rider to perform surf-style carves in the water from the wake of the boat pulling him. The summer of 1985 was the true genesis of wakeboarding with the advent of foot straps on the boards. Both Tony Finn and Jimmy Redmon, a water skier and surfer from Austin, Texas, independently began toying with the idea of foot straps. By strapping the rider onto the board it allowed the opportunity to launch big airs, taking the sport to a whole new level. The final step in the development of wakeboarding was the involvement of Herb O’Brien, a successful businessman and owner of H.O. Sports. His design innovations and mass production of the wakeboard made it accessible to everyone. Many of the elements featured on today’s wakeboards originated with Herb. Modern boards are lighter, stronger, and faster. Boards can be customized for any level rider, any size, and any age, whether you’re 2 years

Wakeboarding has been adopted by the mainstream. The endless possibilities of tricks have captivated a generation of riders looking for the next “big” maneuver. It seems as though every day a pro rider is showcasing his new trick. The 1080, the 1260 – all thought to be impossible back in the days when Tony Finn and Jimmy Redmon were just strapping their feet down for the first time. Now, people are landing these moves without hesitation. More recently, the sport has begun to evolve back toward its roots with “wakeskating”. Wakeskating is wakeboarding but without the foot straps – think skateboard, but on water. The tricks are much more technical, giving the rider the opportunity to really show off his unique style elements. Wakeskating is growing in popularity, in part because it’s more accessible than wakeboarding. The huge wakes created by today’s wakeboard boats are not necessary for the wakeskater. In fact, small wakes are preferred. Modern jet skis are able to pull wakeskaters with ease, as can winch systems costing less than $2,000. Only when we understand where we came from can we have a vision of where we are going. So what does the early history of the sport mean to those just starting out? It documents the spirit of how it became what it is and lays the groundwork for how wakeboarding will become what it should be. I have learned two things from the roots of wake:

1. The possibilities are endless Yeah, yeah, I know we hear this all the time, but it couldn’t be truer than in wakeboarding. It is an individual sport where your personal style can really shine. You don’t have to land the biggest tricks or pull off the craziest spins… you just have to ride and enjoy the water, enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie, enjoy the sport. What direction you take wakeboarding is completely up to you.

2. Everyone has a place Finn and Redmon wanted to do something new to get more people involved in water activities. Wakeboarding, much like surfing, is fueled by the local vibe, and the South Florida ...continued on next spread

About two years ago, the South Florida Wakeboarding Association (SFWA) was formed to unite riders throughout the area and give them a voice. Today, the SFWA has 175 active members and hosts multiple events throughout the year, including the Wake-n-Skate Rail Jam in June, followed by the Pro’s and Joe’s event in November, where amateur riders can share the water with the sport’s pros. The SFWA is an organization started by riders for riders EVERYONE. It gives us a forum to meet other like-minded individuals and share our love for wake. Cristobal Rakes in Another Solid Recruiting Class Entering 2nd Year \\ Words luca messina UM \\ \\ PHOTOS erica meneses MDC \\

he FIU Golden Panthers were a game away from a possible bowl berth last season before finishing with a 5-7 record. The remarkable turnaround from a 1-11 mark in head coach Mario Cristobal’s first season was in part due to an impressive recruiting class and this year’s story is no different. With 23 commitments following his National Signing Day press conference in the President Suite of FIU Stadium, Cristobal believes his additions will pay dividends in the upcoming season that begins Sept. 12 against Alabama. “We had the luxury of signing a great class last year and that led us to a season that showed plenty of progress and it laid the foundation for FIU football,” Cristobal said. “What that class has done is allowed us to recruit this year’s class which is even stronger and going to put us over the top.”

Quarterback With fifth-year senior Paul McCall returning, the Golden Panthers are locked up for 2009, but Cristobal has developed a follow-up plan for afterwards. Redshirt junior Colt Anderson has been groomed as a possible successor to McCall but the Nebraska native will be challenged by incumbent transfer Wesley Carroll, a former starter for Mississippi State. Carroll, also a local product from St. Thomas Aquinas high school (Ft. Lauderdale), was named the Bulldogs starter in 2007 and subsequently threw for 1,392 yards and nine touchdowns as a freshman thus earning an All-SEC Freshman Team nomination. By NCAA transfer rules; Carroll will have to sit out the entire 2009 season before being eligible to take his first snap.

Runningback Gulliver Prep star Darian Mallary is the lone running back recruit and comes to FIU with several accolades. After rushing for 1,796 yards and 15 touchdowns his senior season and leading his team to the state championship, Mallary was named First-Team Class 2A All-State as well First-Team All-Dade. He’ll give senior Daunte Owens and sophomore Darriet Perry a well fought battle for the starting job but nonetheless could see early playing time.

Wide Receiver A total of four prospects are new additions highlighted by Wayne Times of Northwestern High School and JUCO transfer Edgard Theliar, a commitment that became official during Cristobal’s press conference after it looked as if USF was going to land the three-star recruit according to Rivals. Times, also a three-star recruit according to Rivals, began the season as the Bulls’ starting quarterback passing for 486 yards and running for 173. He finished the season as a wide receiver and caught 38 passes for 584 yards and two touchdowns on his way to a Class 6A All-State and All-Dade selection. Rockey Vann (Ocoee, Fla.), Jairus Williams (Miami Central High), and tight end Tourek Williams (Miami Norland) complete the receiving corps.

Offensive Line Always a point of emphasis for Cristobal, five new offensive linemen enter FIU with much promise. Glades Central’s Rupert Bryant, a three-star recruit according to Rivals, was a key cog in the trenches for a team that averaged 371.7 yards a game. Bryant was also a First Team Class 3A AllState as well as First Team-All-Palm Beach County selection.b Killian graduate Giancarlo Revilla, listed as the 32nd best center in the country according to Scout.com was also an All-State Class 6A-First Team and All-Dade selection. Austin Tottle (Seminole, Fla.), Derek Wimberly (Hallandale HS) and David Istanich (Johnstown, Pa.) are also in the mix. Defensive Line: Much of last year’s impressive class focused on defensive lineman who could make significant impacts this upcoming season therefore Cristobal only selected two this offseason. JUCO transfer Thatcher Starling is a defensive end from Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.) who is listed as a threestar recruit and is also listed on the Top-100 JUCO transfer lists according to Rivals. Also becoming a Golden Panther is South Holland, Ill., native defensive tackle Joshua Forney.

Linebacker A last second addition on the morning of National Signing Day may turn out to have the most significant impact for several years to come. Highly touted Apopka linebacker Larvez Mars, the Golden Panthers first four-star recruit in the program’s seven-year history, deliberated between FIU and Iowa State before ultimately deciding he wanted to play in his home state of Florida. Nicknamed “Pooh Bear”, Mars was a US-Army ...continued on page 55

ell, signing day has come and gone. And, with the exception of one commit yet to sign his letter of intent (running back Bryce Brown, who just happens to be the #1 recruit in the nation according to Rivals), the Miami Hurricanes class of 2009 is set.

nation. Cory White (***) was a tight end in high school but will likely end up on the offensive line at UM if he puts on weight as expected. The Canes thought they had lost tight end Billy Sanders (***) to UCLA, but he ended up signing with the U.

This is another talented group of players headed to Coral Gables, and as head coach Randy Shannon explains, many of these rising freshmen will have the chance to play right away, especially the six who enrolled in January. “These guys will have an opportunity to play just like last year when those guys came in and they were more prepared to play in the game,” Shannon said. “We're expecting some of these guys to come in and play.”

This was the most important position in this year’s class, and Miami fans have to be a little disappointed that the Canes didn’t sign a few more linemen. The Canes did land a couple big names out of junior college in Brandon Washington (****) and Jermaine Johnson (****), as well as local prospect Jared Wheeler (***). However, Miami lost out on three other prospects they had been targeting to Ohio State, Michigan and Maryland. As Shannon put it, “Next year that will be another need for us,”

Star rankings are indicated by (*) and are taken from Rivals.

Offensive Line

Defensive Line

The Canes landed a promising legacy in A.J. Highsmith (***), who is the son of former Cane great Alonzo Highsmith. Highsmith was a solid quarterback at the high school level and led his team to the Texas state championship. At 6 feet he may be undersized to play quarterback at the college level, but is athletic enough to make a great corner or receiver prospect.

This is a case of the rich getting richer, and Miami should be set for years to come with several blue-chip prospects bolstering the already solid D-Line. Defensive tackles Luther Robinson (****) and Curtis Porter (***) both dominated their high school leagues and are welcome additions to the team. Miami also landed a pair of top-10 defensive ends in Dyron Dye (****) and Olivier Vernon (****) who should receive consideration for immediate playing time.

Running Back

Linebacker

If things stay the way they are this will be the best running back class Miami has ever landed. Leading the way is Bryce Brown (*****), who has been compared to Reggie Bush in his gamebreaking ability. Brown has been a Miami commitment for a long time now, but is rumored to be wavering and strongly considering several other schools while choosing his decision wisely on a spiritual retreat with his uncle in Nebraska. If Brown signs elsewhere, the Canes don’t need to panic. Local speedster and Parade AllAmerican Lamar Miller (****), as well as the highly touted power-runner Mike James (****), are on the way.

Another area that was not emphasized in this year’s class, Miami signed a few athletes that could end up playing linebacker but may be better suited for other positions. 6’4 and 220 pound freak-athlete (Rivals #1 athlete and #13 overall recruit) Ray-Ray Armstrong (*****) seems like a linebacker but has stated repeatedly he wants to follow in Sean Taylor’s footsteps at safety. Shannon thinks Ray Ray may be on to something, “When you watch Ray Ray do some things, you look at what Sean Taylor was in high school. You can kind of see that in Ray Ray.” The Canes stole Shayon Green (***) from Purdue, but he could end up at defensive end.

Quarterback

All-American as well as a First-Team Class 6A All-State and First Team All-Central Florida selection. Rated as the eight-best linebacker by Rivals, Mars recorded 158 tackles, 15 for a loss, forced four fumbles and recorded an interception in his senior season. Joining Mars is Northwestern First-Team Class 6A All-State and All-Dade linebacker Kenneth Dillard, also a three-star recruit according to Rivals. Dillard led Dade-County with 138 tackles and recorded 10 sacks. He also has proclaimed that he hopes to follow in sophomore T.Y. Hilton and junior Anthony Gaitor’s footsteps in having his action-shot banner hang from FIU Stadium in the near future. Markeith Russell out of North Miami Beach, an All-Dade selection completes the linebackers.

Defensive Back Three safeties and two cornerbacks conclude the defense and they include Derrick Jones (Miami Springs HS), Jonathan Cyprien (North Miami Beach HS), Terrance Taylor (Archbishop Carroll HS), Cain Elliot (Winter Springs, Fla.) as well North Dakota State transfer Jarrell McGee. Often special teams aren’t the highlight of a recruiting class but Cristobal may have found a hidden gem in placekicker as well as punter Jack Griffin (Naples, Fla.). Griffin, who could give senior kicker Dustin Rivest an intriguing battle come training camp, was the 13th-ranked kicker overall and 3rd-ranked kicker in Florida according to Rivals.

What this all means The Golden Panthers made tremendous strides last season and with this new crop of talent as well as the returnees, this team without question is in the hunt for what would be their first Sun Belt Conference crown. With 11 players on offense and defense as well as one special teams player, 20 players are from the state of Florida and every single player was a captain on their respective high school teams. After a tireless recruiting effort by Cristobal and his staff, the third-year coach is satisfied. “We won several recruiting battles against the big boys including the SEC, ACC, C-USA and our own conference. The number one goal of recruiting every season is to fulfill your needs and enhance your strengths as they are already. We feel with this year’s class we have done that already and then some.” ...continued from page 49

Defensive Back the Canes did land Brandon McGee (****) out of Plantation HS in Ft. Lauderdale, they lost local prospect Kayvon Webster (***) to USF on signing day. Prince Kent (***) was initially recruited as a cornerback, but is looking more like a safety at 6’3, 195 lbs. If Ray-Ray Armstrong does end up as a safety, watch out for more freshmen getting immediate playing time in the secondary next year.

What this all means This was without question a solid class. However, understandably it’s not up to par with last year’s talent haul, or what the Canes should be able to do in 2010 when South Florida’s high schools loaded talent will be available for the taking. Offensive line and cornerback remain major areas of need, and Miami could be in trouble if they suffer injuries at these positions this year. Still, signing day is a time for optimism, and the Canes’ faithful have a lot to be excited about as Shannon agrees. “This is a terrific day for our football team and this program at the University of Miami. We went out and filled a couple of needs that we have with this football team and we're excited about this class. I'm very excited for this class and the parents giving us this opportunity to venture into another part of their sons' lives.”

I live and die by saying nobody could do this job unless you’re a former Dazzler here at the school. I’m willing to go through everything because this is my dream for the team,” Popritkin said. What Popritkin’s story shows is that the Golden Dazzlers dance team is much more than a simple collection of good looking college girls dancing in unison at athletic functions and events. The team works and strives for excellence just like any other mainstream sport. In essence, the 16-year journey for Brenda Popritkin is an example for any athletic reclamation project and their principles for success aren’t that different from the men who grind out their efforts everyday except that they are led by someone who chose to always stay true to her roots.
