from the
ART Director \\ Commitment \\ It began as a dream; this whole magazine‌ It started as an idea; notes on napkins and a conversation at happy hour. Rodney (CVO, and co-founder) and I talked and planned for almost a year; we defined our vision and then gave your magazine a name. After more than a year of non-stop work, Issue One was release on August 30th, and back\slash was born. The second issue was released on November 6th; and the third issue was released on February 20th. What you are about to read is our fourth issue; the last issue of volume one. As we enter Volume II, for our next issue in August, back\slash magazine will be localized for and distributed to students at: UCF, USF, FSU, UF, UWF, FIU, and UM. This is a huge jump for us, and one we have been planning since inception. The magazine will remain free and will still be distributed on and off campus by hand and in news racks. I want to personally congratulate three people who have worked timelessly day in and day out for almost three years to get this company and this magazine where it is today: Vince Cimilluca, our content director; Joey DiFrancesco, our Chief Sales Officer; and Valerie Brackett, our CMO. I can honestly say that without these people back\slash would not exist; the four of us have gone through major trials and tribulations in the process, but we’ve done it; we ourselves have grown immensely, and now your magazine is ready to grow. With our 40,000+ Miami readers, and the more than 100 students who are already contributing to the production of back\slash magazine, we are going statewide. Thank you for taking the time to read back\slash,

from the
Content Director \\ Balance \\ I put my heart, soul, and life into this magazine. I’ve chosen and balanced everything to meet the needs and wants of the different types of readers that choose to view and be a part of back\slash. All of the content was written by my amazing writing staff that needed nothing more than simple direction of the piece. I will let the magazine speak for itself from here on out. I want to focus on the other integral component in this mutual back\slash relationship that puts more power into your hands. While the magazine was in production, others and I worked on building a website that alters the way the content will be chosen and handled. This website is backslashonline.com Through our website every single art medium of every single school will be localized so the student can upload their work. If you are a writer, photographer, painter, graphic designer, model, or musician you can now upload your work for others to vote on. The winning work from each school and each medium will be featured in our next issue. I’ve been struggling since I became apart of this magazine to give everyone a voice and I feel that this magazine and I have taken a leap towards the fruition of that dream. I will still hold this position and rightfully choose more content and themes for feature articles but I will now share this direction more with you. If you would like to be a part of this magazine in any way please contact me at vince@backslashonline.com. I look forward, as always, to hearing your comments and feedback. Enjoy.
Thank you for living unrestrained,

Carrington's 9 5 5 5 S d i x i e h i g h way Miami, FL 33156 305.667.9673 The once infamous “Hooligans”, which closed down late last year, got a facelift and is now reopened as Carrington’s. The same dive bar feel is apparent, however the venue has completely renovated itself from a grimy, smoky corner to a kickass, smokin’ bar. Actually, smoking is not allowed inside anymore, but patrons don’t seem to mind going outside and nonsmokers appreciate the change. A plush red carpet and new paneling give a sophisticated flare to this oldie but goodie, as well as the new bar tops and big screen plasmas. Pool tables are still in the back, although less seem to occupy the space. Despite the decrease in pool tables, Carrington’s still hosts tournaments every Tuesday night. As a newly opened bar, Carrington’s is still working out some kinks but college night should be back in full swing come summertime. Keep your eyes and bar ears open for the start of karaoke night, as well as kick-ass DJs and plenty of live music headed to the venue. If you are in the biz, come after 1am any night and your drink is half off. Carrington's might be in the same location as that old bar, but the hooligans are still welcome and highly encouraged. Tell 'em back\slash sent ya.

ShopBar
7 2 1 No rt h L i n c ol n L a n e , Miami, FL 305.531.7700
Their identity crisis is over as Black Sheep has finally settled into their skin and reopened as half lounge, half vintage shop! ShopBar, the new addition to the remodeled venue, allows patrons to drink and peruse racks filled with men’s and women’s vintage clothing as well as local designers’ new creations. The venue has always had a fetish for clothes. Their older model, Laundry Bar, included real washers and dryers that guests used to do laundry while they drank. Now the old washers are gone and replaced with everything from sunglasses and dresses to cowboy boots and old-school overalls, all at affordable prices. The new shop is the brain child of Mariana Luomiet and Carolina Benitez, who have always wanted to open a vintage shop and saw the remodeling of Black Sheep as a great opportunity to go for it. Check out ShopBar Thursday-Sunday 12PM-9PM.

It's almost 5 AM and your buzz is quickly turning into a hang-over. The sun is peeking over the horizon and your DD has agreed to take you to one more place for something to soak up that alcohol before taking you back home. So... Where do you go? Los Perros! They are open until 6 AM seven days a week, and they're always there to shell out your fix of Colombian goodness. Think you know all that is hotdog? Well, these guys are a whole different monster. Topping them with everything from pineapple to quail eggs, it’s best to ignore your better instincts and just order one with everything on it: you'll be glad you did. Open since January 2002, Los Perros has four locations from Bird Road to Miami Lakes, so don't worry, there is sure to be one nearby in case of an emergency. And if last night's hunt turned out to be a bust, Los Perros is always packed with hungry co-eds. So go ahead, get a little Colombian in you. (or go ahead, put a wiener in your mouth... but not because I told you to..

A Netherlands-based company makes its first U.S. appearance in our very own city. Crazy Pianos, a dueling piano bar and restaurant, is scheduled to open early May on the second floor of Cocowalk, where Tu Tu Tango used to reside. Featuring live dueling piano players, complimentary shows and the first frozen beer taps in the United States, this new addition to the Grove will prove to be the craziest of them all. The venue will be open seven days a week from 11:00AM to 3AM. Family friendly, all ages shows will occur until 10:00PM, therein after guests will need to be over 21.

Even saying it at this point almost dries your mouth, leaving an empty carton of Marlboro Light taste that sandpapers the back of your throat. What exactly does it mean to be, or how does one become - a hipster? Merely posing this question is difficult because it gives the movement a sense of credibility and you begin to sound like some late night National Geographic special that you stumbled across as you clicked between Daily Show reruns and late night porno.

Quite simply, a hipster is one who seeks to connect with the working class through obscene gratification and murder of the very symbols that the working class has worked to retain through the years. In other, less elegant words, worn clothing, cartons of Parliaments and Blue Label tall boys, all used to mean something to the masses. They meant physical work, they meant earning a living, they meant struggling and seeking the occasional creature comforts. They had a deeper meaning. What has become increasingly clear with our generation (unnamed at this point, seeing as X was already taken) is that irony and subversion have taken on a new marketable fashion, rather than a joy in clogging what used to be called “the norm”. Culture jamming and flash mobbing have taken steps at reclaiming the cacophony, but the growing hipster scene has dominated the general outlook of the emerging throngs of youth, clamoring for some sense of guidance. Previous generations had their prophets: Ginsberg and Kerouac for the Beats, Timothy Leary for the counterculture of the 1960s, even Ronald Regan for the Yuppie conformists of the 1980s. Liking Celine Dion is permissible, because it’s so ironic! Liking Kenny G is just absolutely hysterical! In the end, all it ends up with is a void of sincerity with a lack of substance to back up the attempt at a lukewarm nihilistic outlook and leaves onlookers with the overwhelming urge to barge in on the latest coffee house meeting with the grandest copy of Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary they could come across opened to the entry for ironic and beating everyone in sight with it (invoking the same

fervor English professors took in lambasting Alanis Morissette for her lack of any irony in the song of the same name). Like anything else, there are positives, though only evident when removed from the scene. The mash up beauty of Greg Gillis (aka Girl Talk), the resurgence of vinyl as a music standard, even some elements of the fashion are occasionally excellent. The problem, as with anything else in this life, is those who practice Hipsterism as a religion of sorts. The zealots take a candle to the icons of the past, and rather than provide any real infusion of original thought to supplement or modify, they only exist to break down and belittle with their “fuck the world” attitude. All I can offer in the face of this growing movement is the sentiment that boils as I see the plaid clothed, Ray-Ban Wayfarer-ed masses sloshing about in the stew of their own self importance; and this denial is a simple exercise in realization. They will eventually get a job. They will have a family. They will have no sense of life. They will have no sense of beauty. Their tastes will continue to devolve into turgid wastelands of corporate life. There will be no survivors. None will be spared. Hipsters take note, your time will come. Raise your middle fingers now, but forget not how quickly the glory fades.
My roommate said the origin of the hipster was when Galileo first told Pope Urban VIII that the earth orbited the sun, and not the other way around, and the pope responded, “…I don’t care.” A writer named Douglass Haddow wrote an article called, “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization.” In his most convincing argument (summed up as, ‘hipsters don’t believe in anything’) he claimed hipsters were a youth subculture that mirrored the doomed shallowness of mainstream society. Whew. Since no real hipster would actually admit to being a hipster, you’re going to have to assume I’m writing this article strictly to be ironic. Hipsters never identify as hipsters, and this rejection of the “hipster” title is not a recent development: while punk rockers loudly claimed themselves in their heyday as punk rockers and radicals and anarchists, if you call yourself a hipster, you might be trying too hard. The Beats, at the root of the “hipster” movement, considered themselves hip, but would never self-identify as hipsters. People hate pretty hard on hipsters, possibly because they don’t have a steady ideology or they are associated with a sort of pretentiousness, which isn’t good, but I don’t feel like it needs to be defended. However it really seems like many of those people who accuse and point the hipster finger more commonly than not, are quite open to the charge themselves. Now that’s ironic. Hipsters, unlike punks or anarchists, are a subculture versus a counterculture, and as a group tend to be characterized by shallowness or apathy. In his book, The Dark Ages: Life in the U.S. 1945-1960, Marty Jezer defines the hipster world of Kerouac and Ginsberg as a sort of amorphous

movement without ideology, more a pose than an attitude; a way of "being" without attempting to explain why. Even today, it is unlikely that a hipster would supply explanations. Now I will not defend, but in theory, I could argue, that just because there is not an ideology does not mean hipster “being” cannot be a philosophy. I am not trying to pretentiously flex my knowledge of shallow pop culture here, but on an episode of “Candid Camera” years ago, there was a stunt they pulled where they had six people stand in an elevator facing the wrong way. Statistically it turns out, most people will turn the wrong way if they see everyone else doing it. The elevator did not open two ways; there was no purpose to facing the back of the elevator. In fact, it was foolish. While there are hipster roots in jazz music and the Beat generation, the hipster of today is looked at as a American-Apparel wearing, cause-oriented, Pabst blue ribbon-drinking, frozen, organic burrito-eating, 20-something with a parent’s credit card that’s swiped mostly for cheap finds in thrift stores. It gets equated with being anti-mainstream for the sake of being anti-mainstream. But the mainstream isn’t that great, and while hipsters are accused of looking alike and dressing alike, it does look like “hipsters” tend to be less susceptible to commercialism, perhaps more skeptical of commercialism and “falling in line” than the social average. American Apparel is all manufactured in the United States and promotes fair trade. Pabst is cheap. Independent publications, musicians, and designers should be supported. Just because it is a different subculture does not mean it is better and it does not mean it is worse. Hipsters just are: the bumming, hitchhiking, derivatives of the Beat writers of yore. But if pink is the new black and Tuesdays are the new Fridays, judgment might just be the new Chuck Norris. Think about it.

ultra m Festiva WELCOME TO THE MAD HOUSE
M
y idea was simple: go to Ultra Fest 2009, take some stuff, write about it. Ultra Fest is a music festival that took place at Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami featuring a variety of DJs, bands, and other artists to give you the Ultra musical experience. This year was my third encounter with the monster that is Ultra, so I already knew the nature of the beast and was confident I could wrangle a good story from it. I've done ecstasy many times (I'm from Jersey, there's not much else to do), so I was equally confident that I would have the mental capacity. I even brought along a little voice recorder to document the trip if I, for any reason, happened to forget my basic motor skills. Which brings me to the first lesson I learned from my experience at Ultra: if you have to be even marginally responsible the day of ultra, DON'T TAKE anything. The two just don’t mix, as I quickly found out. I arrived around three with a purse full of candy, a sweater for the chills, an empty water bottle, and six beans for my compadre in crime, Riff Raff, and I. First tip if you’re going to Ultra or any other venue that does not allow drink where drink is a necessity: bring your own water bottle and casually fill up from the ice bin when the beer vendor isn't looking. At five dollars per bottle inside, it's well worth the risk. It also helps to have breasts. We took our first bean ceremoniously at the top of the infamous, giant hill that overlooks all of the stages. Ultra tip two: always chew the stuff at least moderately before swallowing to ensure a more immediate experience. Riff Raff understood I was being a “serious journalist” that day and said we could go wherever I needed for the story, so we made our way to the Main Stage where Infected Mushroom was playing. I immediately decided that they suck, partially due to my urge to seek out my favorite stage, the Mid-Park stage, or Drum&Bass stage as it is more commonly known. D&B is pretty fucking intense, and as soon as we got there I realized I would have to wait for the stuff to kick in before I could partake in its insanity.

4:55: I'm feeling...juicy...(?) 5:00 – Morrillo plays in Carl Cox. (documentation ended for a bit here)
We leave and float around for a bit, checking out the stages. No one at this point looks too fucked up, and I've yet to hear any ambulance sirens. Which brings me to Ultra tip three: you really don't need to go before five, a lot of people don't. The best acts are at night, and it's very easy to burn yourself out too soon. By 4:30, we were rolling our (proverbial) balls off at the Main Stage. Above & Beyond was playing, and the only written documentation I have out of it was “Note to self: what's with the furry boots?” And fortunately, I still remember seeing them. More fortunate, was their light show, which made me want to bump uglies with someone. As for the next couple of hours, this is what I actually wrote, ver batim. 4:45 (upon returning to the D&B tent): Welcome to the Madhouse. 4:47: Looked for a strange girl's tongue ring for 3 minutes on the ground. Hurt my tibia.
Sidenote: Morrillo did a sick version of the Eurythmics, “Sweet Dreams,” and at this moment we take our second bomb. I think it was a classy choice. By this time, I had lost my shirt in a heat delirium and was now just wearing a miniscule, gold lame' bathing suit top and a rather striking pair of tie- dye shorts. Oh yeah, and I was soaking wet from pouring water on myself repeatedly. The Push-Pops performed afterwards. This was one of the few times we mustered up the strength to muscle our way up to the front, and as expected, the heat was fucking ridiculous. To put it lightly, I'm pretty sure the dude beside me actual fainted for a few minutes. We must have stayed for a half hour, because at 5:30, little miss journalist started her very intriguing, very intelligent documentation of events again. 5:30 – Fredde Le Grand – Praise You – think I came. 5:32 – It's 5:30 and I can't make sense of the Ultra Program whatsoever. Not boding well for my reporting skills. 5:36 – Damien (who the fuck is Damien?) says I have gorgeous eyes.

freakishly shiny head and squinty eyes. I remember sitting on the hill, listening to Van Buuren while getting a neck massage from some Australian chick I will never see again. I remember seeing two people, sitting on a bench beside one of the hot dog vendors, making out in slow motion, tongues lopping out the sides of their mouths, with their eyes closed too tightly. I remember thinking I was going to die for at least a full two hours. I remember losing my mind in the D&B tent for hours, dancing like I was having a seizure. I remember seeing a girl actually have a seizure, and then remembering that I thought I was going to die. But then I found bubbles in my purse and it was all straight again. I remember a skinny Asian girl, dressed head to toe as a green alien pokes me in the forehead for no good reason. I remember having people's eyes stare at me, blindly, unfocused. I remember forgoing Simeon Mobile Disco and Van Dyke (I hated myself for two days straight after that) for the pleasures of a hot tub. The point is, the best things in life are to be experienced, and, if you’re lucky, documented. You can't describe everything you see, feel, or hear at Ultra, you just have to go and see it for yourself. I can't remember much, but I do know that I had a good time.
I can give you a brief synopsis of what I remember happening. Key words here being: “what I remember.” I remember Boyz Noize, and I remember being frightened of this bald guy for his

The Sasquatch Music festival, taking over the Gorge Amphitheatre in May, is an incredible mix of genre bending, legendary and breakout musicians and comedians alike. Camp or room it up, but wander the festival grounds and experience what looks to be the West coast’s answer to Glastonbury (minus the level of day trippers, this is a “family” event after all). Also, the level of convenience is upped, considering a food court and ATM’s scattered about the grounds. If you can drop the approximate $70 on tickets (at press time, this is the given price) I’d suggest this festival with an unrivaled sense of urgency.
In what is rumored to be one of the most musically gifted lineups of the year, the 5th annual Wanee Music Festival is looking to bring together young and old lovers of good ol’ fashioned rock and roll seeking escape from real life into the infinite abyss of the Spirit of Suwanee park, June 5th-6th (pre-party is June 4th at the park) in Live Oak, Florida. The Spirit of Suwanee Music Park is known for its breathtaking aesthetics, luring visitors to venture off into the river or wander into Lord of the Rings-like forests brimming with trees hundreds of years old. The park’s atmosphere, which offers something for everyone, encourages reveling in nature and is guaranteed to channel your inner hippie.
Try to imagine 80,000 people who have traveled across the nation to set up thousands of tents, RVs, huts and the like on Tennessee farmland for the pure purpose of music and escape. Every walk of life from families with kids to old, wacked-out hippies create a city together and for four days, you are family. Eight stages bring forth some of the greatest names in music, in all genres from noon to three AM, for four days straight. However, coming into its 8th year, Bonnaroo is one of the main summer festivals that has evolved into an event of the arts which includes live comedy, lounges, art and crafts corners as well as a montage of artists that come and showcase their work throughout the campsites.
Music to Go For: The Allman Brothers (2 nights), Gov’t Mule, The Doobie Brothers, Toots and the Maytals, Little Feet, Umphreys Mcgee, Susan Tedeschi, Arc Angels, The Wailers (performing Exodus Album in full), Drive By Truckers, Keller Williams, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Bill Kreutzman w/ Oteil Burbage and Scott Murawski, Ivan Neville’s Dunpstaphunk, The Lee Boys, and Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band
Music: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, David Bryne, Snoop Dogg, Elvis Costello, Paul Oakenfold, The Mars Volta, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Comedy: Triumph the Insult Dog Comic Presents Bonnapoo 2009, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver and Rob Riggle of the Daily Show

Most importantly, don’t worry much about cash, but bring an ATM card (and keep it hidden). Sunshine on the horizon, but bring a raincoat in case of the famous Washington showers.

Stash the Following: Ponchos, sneakers, sweater, cooler w/ fruit and Gatorade, tarp (for shade), propane grill, bug repellent, Gold Bond, toilet paper, baby wipes, sunscreen, trash bags, cash (ATM fess are harsh), and as a reminder: drive the speed limit because cars heading to the festival are marked.

Three Things to Know Before You Go: A big bowl to shower with. Don’t spend $10 on a shower. Beware of fake mushrooms. Don’t buy drugs from black guys with duffel bags. Look for the hippies. Get in line to enter the park at the crack of dawn or you will miss the first day. You will be waiting for at least three hours, so bring beer.

New Artist Review : When Tony “Smurphio” Laurencio met Cristina “Cuci Amador” Garcia, magic happened. Exemplifying the styles of Deee-Lite and Jupiter Rising, the duo came together to form Afrobeta, the electronic/house sound system you won’t be able to stop banging through your speakers. Afrobeta has been rocking the house throughout California and Miami, and on January 15th of this year they scored the opportunity to rock your iPod as well. On the iTunes release of “That Thing,” Afrobeta gives us a double dose of Smurphio’s hypnotic, body-moving "cosmic mix” and Cuci Amador’s angelic vocals that’s sure to send your ears into absolute musical euphoria. Don’t just take this review’s word for it, check them out yourself at myspace.com/afrobeta.
2 \\ YEAH YEAH YEAHS
New Album: It's Blitz : After taking a prolonged hiatus from the recording studio, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's highly anticipated third, full-length album, It's Blitz! shows an unquestionable transformation in sound since their 2006 album, Show Your Bones. Long gone are the days of gritty, post-punk blare that had helped the band create their niche in the dark underbelly of New York's music scene. Replacing the sound is a slightly sterilized, synth- heavy dance record, weighed down with an uncharacteristic amount of ballads. Is it an exceptional album? Certainly. But will the hardcore Yeah Yeah Yeah fans be put off by the noticeable evolution in sound? Perhaps. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are clearly adapting to the current trends in music, replacing guitarist Nick Zinner's choppy two chord crush-axe with a more commercially acceptable arsenal of vintage synths. The result is a club-friendly, disco-glam album. Co-producers Nick Luanay from Talking Heads and The Arcade Fire and TV on the Radio guitarist, Dave Sitek, have smoothed over the band's brass-knuckled appeal with a corporate shine and have greatly influenced the Yeah Yeah Yeah's development into the New Age disco era. It's Blitz! dives unabashedly into the modern disco scene and barely gives a second glance to the band's roots. It's an exceptionally crafted album that will definitely adhere to the fair weather audiences of the club scene, as well as the general public of radio listeners. Yet while the album might turn off the diehard fans resistant to a new sound, it would be unfair to deny this album its overall success.
3 \\ Theophilus London
Mixtape : When a new rapper comes out with a mix tape it usually consists of scattered freestyles on top of familiar beats originated by the likes of Timbaland, Pharell, or Lil’ Wayne with an audio sample of their name coming in every thirty seconds. Theophilus chose not to take this path and drudged out an eclectic and mesmerizing symphony of uncommon beats and matching flow. Not limiting himself to the scope of Hip-Hop, Theo takes samples from Squarepusher, Kraftwerk, and Whitney Houston as he intertwines his heavy-bass beats between his fluid style that can only be described as Kanye minus the egotistical word “I” His whole entire mix tape is free and downloadable through backslashonline.com.

elcome to the University of Miami. Here you’ll find people representing the entire spectrum of skin color from cue-ball to eight-ball, speaking in a vast variety of languages and dialects from thousands of different cities and towns, and dozens of different nations. In the fall of 2008, 55% of students were White, 28% were Hispanic, 10% were Black, 7% were Asian, and only 28 people were Native American (yeah, it’s fucked up, but I don’t know anyone who kicked it with Andrew Jackson.) So throw on a Seminole headdress and a sombrero, some fresh Air Jordan’s and PJ’s from the Gap, a Tamagotchi graphic tee-shirt covered by a Jamawar Shawl, and let’s get funky. Because everyone likes a little jelly to go with their peanut butter, don’t they? And whether it’s creamy or chunky that gets your juices flowing, there’s something so damn sexy about slamming the two buns together and watching the multicolored goo gush down the sides of the crust, isn’t there? It’s that special combination that couldn’t be achieved with just jelly or purely peanut butter that makes it such a scrumptious delight. Such is the flavor of love between the races. The history of interracial intercourse traces back to that fateful day, long ago, when two people with different skin colors crossed paths while gathering water at a well in an ancient desert that separated the different races. They happen to think one another were svelte and carried themselves with a sexy vibe, and so they got down on it. Since that day, people of different races, from Othello to Thomas Jefferson, have been wrestling, both between the sheets and for an attitude of acceptance towards the taboo notion. Just 42 years ago, the last law prohibiting interracial marriage in the U.S., Virginia’s “Racial Integrity* Act of 1924,” was declared unconstitutional in the Loving v. Virginia civil rights case. Robert De Niro, Woody Allen, Halle Barry, David Bowie, and Seal have all been in the right by our

laws and updated social values since that day. Lucky for them they don’t live in Pakistan, where in 2008, Pakistani senators defended the practice of burying women alive who were found guilty of engaging in a relationship with men not from their tribe. It’s like killing a Cuban girl from Kendall in the worst way imaginable for dating a Puerto Rican guy from Hialeah, and it’s not funny. We are very lucky to live in a country and a city as accepting and diverse as the U.S. and Miami. So why, with so much opportunity to taste the sweet sexual flowers of another race, does there still appear to be so few interracial couples compared to same race couples walking around? Part of the explanation could be that in a city where new potential sexual partners greet you at every venue; it can be hard for anyone to maintain the focus required to be in a serious relationship of any kind. Then there is the “birds of a feather” argument, which basically states that, though someone doesn’t discriminate against or look down on interracial relationships, it just might not be their thing because it doesn’t turn them on. And getting turned on is kind of the whole point, isn’t it? So my challenge to everyone is this. If you are single and have never been with someone of a different race, then do some online research and see what you like. After you’ve found out what gets you off, adjust your clothes and attitude to make yourself most appealing to your target race. Don’t overdo this because you’ll end up looking like an asshole. Go straight for whatever you want, and if you get it, lick your lips and thank the heavens for allowing the erotic coupling between peanut butter and jelly. Guy And if you happen to like it so much soThis that you end up being in an interracial relationship, then everyone will say “wow they’re so progressive,” and “I bet that’s hot,” and most importantly, you can always and forever play the discrimination card in any tight situation and people will be afraid to go there. Enjoy each other, let’s make this a tan world.

FIU lands ISiah Thomas _ Words luca messina fiu \\
The cost of living on campus is too high.
FIU is a really great school because it is a melting pot for the different cultures in South Florida.

irst John Brady at Arkansas State, then Mike Jarvis at Florida Atlantic, now Isiah Thomas at FIU. The Golden Panthers made national headlines on April 14 by agreeing to a five-year contract with Hall of Famer and former NBA coach Isiah Thomas to replace the dismissed Sergio Rouco. He becomes the third coach in the Sun Belt Conference most recently to be given a second chance and the sixth in program history. In a surprising move, the terms of the contract include Thomas agreeing to work pro bono in his first season with his salary being donated to FIU Athletics. The remaining four years will accumulate to around $1.1 million. Because he was let go by the New York Knicks last season, the franchise still owes him around $12 million for the remaining two years on that deal. Initially Rouco was fired the morning of April 13 and reassigned within the athletic department thus creating the opening after compiling a 55-94 mark in five seasons. “We feel that it is now time to move in a new direction,” said Athletic Director Pete Garcia. “It’s a landmark day in our history and we know that we’re going to get the entire South Florida community involved; they’re in for a real treat with Isiah Thomas.” Desperate to repair a tarnished image after a tumultuous five-year stint with the New York Knicks that also include his role as President of Basketball Operations, Thomas was enticed by the school’s location, a student population of over 38,000 and a growing football program. “I like rolling up my sleeves; I like taking something from the bottom and trying to build it to the top,” Thomas said. “There’s a lot of risk in that and there’s a lot of reward in that but that’s how I grew up.” After initially suffering a
\\ 22 april 09 \\ volume 1 issue 4
rash of injuries to start this season that prompted several walk-on players to join the squad, the Golden Panthers this season eventually regained full health but fell in the second round of the conference tournament to the eventual champion Western Kentucky. They finished 13-20 and have yet to have to a winning campaign since 1999-2000 when they finished 16-14. Their lone appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 1995 when they were ousted by UCLA. Despite the shortcomings, Thomas knows that he will have his work cut out for him but is not intimidated in what will be his first coaching stint at both the college and Division I level. “I want to take FIU to the next level and I know that it’s going to take a lot of hard work but I’m willing to pay the price to do that,” Thomas said. With the unexpected hire, Garcia thinks that the program will grow and achieve the goals that were laid out when the former Cleveland Browns executive, who spent most of his years with the University of Miami, was hired in October 2006. Garcia hired former UM assistant Mario Cristobal to take over a flailing winless football program in December 2006 and was just a victory away from competing in a bowl game this past season finishing 5-7. Recruiting guru Turtle Thomas, formerly of UM, LSU and Arizona State, took over a regressing baseball program in 2007 that is now currently fighting for first place in their conference. In total, Garcia has replaced the head coaches of all three major revenue sports in his tenure as he continues his onward march to making the Golden Panthers a household name. “He’s a good recruiter but he shoots straight with you and in this profession, with so many families involved, ...continued on page 57

He laughed when asked this, giving the impression that he’s seen the question a number of times. “Journalism is always a good option,” Cancio-Bello speculated, adding, “my goal is to find something where I can use my creative writing skills. Right now though, I’m just journaling and reading as much as possible.” Whether he finds a job that uses those skills, Cancio-Bello planned to never quit writing. “I think being creative is a big part of my life in general, and other peoples’ too,” he said.

n a collapsed economy and unemployment soaring throughout the nation, college students are at a loss at what to do once they graduate. Do they continue their studies with a Master’s? Will they find a job with virtually no experience? The staff at Miami-Dade College has been working hard to provide career services to their students and surprisingly, there are many companies out there that continue to hire straight out of college. Walt Disney World and Resort is a prime example. More than 200 MDC students have participated in Disney's College Program, which offers undergraduate students the opportunity to work with members of the company's leadership and management team while earning college credit and income. This program often yields permanent jobs, such that of Theodore Thomas, a second year student at MDC, experienced after finishing an eight-month internship as a cast member in custodial at Magic Kingdom. The 22 year old returned to MDC and was hired as a campus recruiter for the Disney College Program. "Not only am I promoting the Disney College Program, but I also have had the opportunity to meet members of Wolfson’s Campus leadership team, including the President, student dean and chair of the business program,” says Thomas. And don’t worry, more than 20 internships are available for the Fall 2009 Term, including Merchandise Host/Hostess, Attractions Host/Hostess, Quick Service Food & Beverage Host/ Hostess, Lifeguard and Character Performer. State Farm, one of the nation’s largest insurance providers, has also hired over 80 MDC students and alumni over the past 2 decades and continues to seek applicants for claims service assistants, claims processors and claims representatives. Within the last year alone, nine MDC students were hired in
\\ 22 april 09 \\ volume 1 issue 4
the claims department of State Farm’s Miami-Dade Operations Center. Chris Garcia is one such student. Garcia, a 28-year-old history major, is working on his associate degree part time while working full time as a claims service assistant. "The fact that I am going to MDC gave me an edge over other applicants," said Garcia. "I learned how to set and meet goals in the classroom and have been able to bring these skills to the job." The College’s newest initiative is its current campaign entitled “Hot Jobs”, which pushes nine different, recession-proof careers that anyone can receive training and/or certification right on the MDC campus. These jobs range from Medical Assistants and Paralegals to Police Officers and Web Application Developers. Training or certification can be anywhere from one semester to a year. Students might not think of the government when trying to obtain a job but the fact is, recession or no recession, the government is here to stay. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami has hired 45 MDC students since 2003 and is looking for more. The hourly range for part-time student clerks is $11.36 to $13.91 and includes great government benefits. “This program gives college students the opportunity to obtain career training and experience while enrolled at MDC,” said Marie Dove, human-resources specialist. Many student clerks hired between 2007 and 2009 were employed using the MDC Student Employment and Internship Opportunities Online Site. So MDC students, take advantage of your school’s MDC Student Employment and Internship Opportunities Online Site, where you can log in and create a profile with your resume. The site will also help you search, find and apply for jobs and internships that employers post on the site. There are oh so many job fish in the sea, so take a deep breath and start applying.

ASSEMBL AMMIA ON THE ECONOMICS OF THE LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA \\ Words vincent cimilluca UM \\ ILLUSTRATION rodney jackson MICA \\
\\
We are exiting the dark ages, slowly albeit but we can thank Assembly member Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) in part for the introduction of his ground-breaking legislation on February 23, 2009, that would tax and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. The Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education act (AB 390) would create a regulatory structure similar to that used for beer, wine and liquor, permitting taxed sales to adults while barring sales to or possession by those under 21. This is not Ammiano’s first groundbreaking legislation. In 1977, Ammiano founded the movement (No on 6) against the Briggs Initiative, to ban all gay people from teaching in California, with activists Hank Wilson and Harvey Milk. The anti-Briggs movement, supported by people as diverse as Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, was successful in defeating the initiative in 1978.
He also was successful in introducing the first Universal Health Care Plan and it passed by a unanimous vote. This makes San Francisco the first city in the nation to provide universal healthcare access. Ammiano is also the main architect of the city's Domestic Partners Ordinance, which provides equal benefits to employees and their unmarried domestic partners. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, on December 15, 1941, this 67 year old has been a fighter all his life. His Alma Marta is Seton Hall University and San Francisco State University. He is an activist, teacher, politician, stand-up comedian and even a movie star. He played himself in the autobiography of Harvey Milk.

workers required to pick the harvest. One blogger, a farmer living in California and growing six plants legally each year. Of which, he reaps at least five pounds from six fourteen-foot plants. At $3,500 a pound, equates to $245,000 a year. But he’s just a dirt farmer. What does he know? Actually, if history repeats itself (an it usually does) this could be the next gold rush in California. As you have heard the government has decided to tax us to pay for the debt. This is their plan. And I have just heard from Newt Gingreg speaking on “This Week” on WABC with George Stephanoupolus today, April 12, 2009 that all of the tax we are able collect the from the governments plan will only pay for interest incurred as of April 25, 2009. After that, the interest for our debt will simply continue to grow.
His latest legislation to legalize cannabis is his attempt to reduce the California budget deficit.
It has sparked a debate in the U.S. and made it acceptable for legislatures to talk openly about marijuana and this untapped resource of revenue streaming in and out of our country. Ammiano estimates that legalizing marijuana would generate $1 billion annually for the state of California. Ammiano's proposal has the support of San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey, who said the idea "should be the subject of legislative and public debate." It also has the backing of Betty Yee, who chairs the state Board of Equalization, which collects taxes in California. An analysis by the agency concluded the state would collect $1.3 billion a year from tax revenues and a $50-an-ounce levy on retail sales if marijuana were legal. The analysis also concluded that legalizing marijuana would drop its street value by 50 percent and increase consumption of the substance by 40 percent. A spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates for reform in marijuana laws and is backing Ammiano's proposal, said any expected increase in consumption is a "false notion." "They are making an intuitive assumption that a lot
of people make that really does not have that much evidence behind it," said Bruce Mirken, the group's spokesman, who predicted it could take up to two years before the idea wins legislative approval. "Don't tell me that doing something like (this) proposal is going to introduce another drug into society. That's a load of bull."
If all 50 states would adopt the same legislation, we could easily generate $50B in marijuana sales revenue. Ammiano is not the only one campaigning to legalize marijuana. Jeffrey A. Miron is senior lecturer in economics at Harvard University. In a recent article dated March 24, 2009, he states that the U.S. would collect $33 billion on tax revenue. Using our current deficit of $957 Billion, we would be able to pay this off in 29 years. Add to this his revised number for law enforcement of $44 billion a year and we are giving the cartel an estimated $77 billion a year (that we know of). Not all the cartel, just the leaders of Mexico's warring drug cartels, whose turf wars killed 6,300 people last year. If we use this conservative $77 billion a year to pay down the deficit, we would break even in 12 years. We are getting closer. These estimates do not even take into consideration our small farmers that would benefit from a profitable crop and the
According to the federal government, nearly 15 million Americans use marijuana at least once a month. That's equal to every man, woman and child in the states of Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Oklahoma combined. It's nearly as many Americans as will buy a new car or truck this year. It's a huge market. Prohibition cannot and will not make that market go away. It has simply given criminals and violent gangs an exclusive franchise, and society pays the price every day: In unregulated drug dealers with no incentive not to sell to kids, in clandestine grows hidden in national parks and surrounded by booby traps, in the bloodshed that inevitably comes with prohibition -- just as it did during America's ill-fated experiment with alcohol prohibition during the 1920s.
History is repeating itself. We are as desperate as we were in the 1920’s. We must snap out of it and start focusing of what matters. Our children. our educational system, our lack of health insurance and finally our debt. There is blood in our streets once more, there are gangs and underground markets making a fortune. This time it is not alcohol, it is marijuana. Ammiano has a plan; it’s an untapped market that will not go away. Capitalize on it, take control, and put this desirable weed to work for us. Legalize marijuana and start generating revenue now to reduce our debt. You can voice you support to legalize marijuana by logging on to prohibitioncosts@mpp. org. If this legislation doesn’t pass, and our graduating college students drowning in debt are unable to find a job. All I can say is, “Go West, young man!”

...continued from previous spread everything else: precision driving. The growing popularity of drift racing here at home quickly brought on professional and amateur drift circuits. These events are happening right in your own backyard, they’re always open to the public, and unlike “lesser” automotive sports, they run rain or shine. In fact, some say a wet track adds to the excitement. Just ask local drift racer Kevin Phillips, current leader in the DriftUSA circuit. “When it’s wet out there, you’re a lot more likely to just fly right off the track,” says Kevin. “You definitely need to take it easy into your first turn. That’s a real problem for me. My attitude is always ‘go big or go home’.” Kevin certainly lived up to his words at last month’s competition at Countyline Dragway in Miami.
He was entering faster than any
other competitor, and really put on a show in his modified ’04 Nissan 350z. During one of his practice runs, he lost it and slid off the track, colliding with one of the metal barriers that line the course. It thoroughly mangled the passenger side of his car, ripping off the side mirror and sending it flying through his car, striking him in the face and breaking his nose. Bruised, bloodied, and his vision a blur, Kevin shook it off and held nothing back in his scored runs that followed. He, quite literally, smoked the competition, leaving them all in his tire dust and proudly taking a first place victory. When asked about the damage to his car, he simply shrugged his shoulders, “It happens”. Nissans are the workhorse of drift racing. Most competitors equip themselves with an old Nissan 240sx, as they’re cheap to buy and repair, can be easily modified to produce ample power, and most are beaters to begin with, so it’s not too tragic when you kiss a concrete wall. Kevin said he chose the Nissan 350z to drift with “because, despite being relatively more costly to repair and maintain, it’s the best setup to slide (drift) straight from the factory.” With passionate fans seeking their adrenaline fix and newcomers looking to satisfy their curiosity, each event boasts more people in the stands than the last; and with no shortage of local, grassroots drift racers building their cars and pushing the bar ever higher, the Florida drift scene isn’t slowing down any time soon. e are not in the business of policing society. We are in the business of rooting out cheats in sport. That's what WADA's (World Anti-Doping agency) core function is about," said Richard Carborn. Carborn, as the Former Minister of Sport of England and current English Ambassador for the 2018 World Cup, suggested the scaling back of testing for "social drugs" in international competitions. He said anti-doping codes should be based on 3 basic principles: performance enhancement, harm to the athlete, and harm to the sport. Carborn's revelation got me thinking about social drugs that are tested for and penalized in American sports, and when one thinks of social drugs in American sports, the first thing that comes to mind is professional basketball and the NBA. Before examining the ins and outs of how the use of social drugs is policed by professional sports in America, we have to define what social drugs are. In today’s culture, the big three are alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. Since cocaine is a banned drug by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), the model professional sports uses for drug testing, and marijuana and alcohol are only monitored and not generally prohibited (according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine), I want to focus on how American sports test for and enforce violators and how it is handled. Athletes are a unique breed of human, and they are the most accurate personification of the "work hard, play hard" mentality. Sometimes the fan doesn’t understand the work ethic required to sustain a career as a professional athlete. The fan observes just a sampling of what goes into being a professional athlete - the actual competition. However, the amount of commitment really applied is mind boggling, and a year round venture. They don’t get paid exorbitant amounts of money for nothing but I'm not saying the salary is necessarily justified, or that people should sympathize with athletes because they are overly scrutinized or constantly observed through a magnifying glass either.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
and s Athletes play a child’s game after all and it is not necessarily harder than teachers or lawyers for example, but it is different, and most times a lot more mentally draining. Educators don’t have handfuls of people hanging around the teachers lounge, foaming at the mouth barraging them with questions and challenges about their day’s work. Lawyers don’t have followers challenging their every move and constantly questioning their effort at every turn. What the court of public opinion needs to understand is that athletes are not superhuman robots. They have a life outside of their trade, a family, other hobbies, and people cannot be turned off by the fact that athletes sometimes need to take a step back, kick their feet up, and escape. Sometimes the "social guidelines and expectations" imposed on athletes by the media, which in turns feeds it to the masses, is unfair and unrealistic and doesn’t match the rules imposed on the rest of society and specifically other public figures. The media and fans shouldn’t expect from athletes any more than what is expected from other people in society.
looked at as a bad thing, and a lot of the time, smoking a joint is just as accepted as having a drink; just a matter of substance preference. Understandably, marijuana is illegal and can be punished by the law, as opposed to alcohol, which is legal. But the question arises as to how an athlete, who is caught using steroids, knowingly cheating, is reprimanded by his respected sport compared to an athlete caught smoking marijuana. One has to distinguish the difference between cheating and recreation, even if both are damaging to the mind and body.
Nowadays, sports in America and worldwide is marred and haunted by the black cloud of performance enhancing drugs. With the steroid scandal rearing its ugly head, alcohol and marijuana enforcement has taken a backseat, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Singling out athletes who cheat using steroids is imperative to sustaining the integrity of the game, but passing judgment on athletes who party too much with drugs and alcohol isn’t necessarily correct.
Young athletes rarely have experience in "the real world" and are vulnerable to succumbing to the pleasures that come with newly found riches. They might not quite fully grasp the responsibilities of being an athlete, fair or unfair, and after receiving preferential treatment their whole life, have a skewed sense of invincibility. The cockiness and feeling of indestructibility is imperative in the “dog eat dog” world of professional sports, which consists of having little job stability and a short shelf life. When aspiring athletes leave college early to pursue a professional career, the idea of "being the life of the party" is very attractive. Combined with the general acceptance and openness of marijuana use in society since the 1960's, one wonders if marijuana use in sports is reflective of society. In the NBA, the Executive Director of the Players Association, Billy Hunter, understood marijuana use is bad for the image of the NBA, but also defended the players’ rights to being regular citizens. "We have a concern about player image and success of the league," Hunter said, "We don’t want to undermine it or destroy it but I don’t intend to impose on our players more than what is imposed on people in society".
When recreation affects performance, in any trade, it is unacceptable. Athletes have accessibility to an infinite amount of fun, and some can’t handle it or control themselves. However, in today’s society, especially among young people, marijuana isn’t

or not. So I think to single out players, because of a couple of players who had incidents, no, I don’t think that’s the way to go." Since quoted in 1997, Stoudamire has been arrested 3 times on marijuana possession charges. He is not the only one to face such scrutiny; Allen Iverson, Chris Webber, and even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are just a few who have been charged with marijuana possession. Others, such as former forward Knicks’ Charles Oakley and current Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard have openly spoken about the recreational use of marijuana in the off season (both have never failed a drug test administered by the NBA). In 2005, 59 NBA players participated in a Rocky Mountain News survey on the topic. The average estimate from the survey was that 30% of NBA players smoke Marijuana. Is it good for the "thuggish" and "gangbanger" image of the NBA? No. Should the NBA continue to enforce its recent drug testing rules agreed upon in the 2005 collective bargaining agreement, where all players will be subject to four random drug tests each season (during the period from October 1 through June 30)? Yes. I think the NBA absolutely hit the nail on the head with the recent agreement, allowing the athletes off-season to really be an off-season. They are also attempting to preserve the integrity of their sport by enforcing random drug testing while athletes are "on the clock." No employee should ever come to work hung over, or stoned, and one has to understand that wherever one goes and does so, you represent the company you work for, but with rumblings of Bill Clinton (he insisted he didn’t inhale......OK,) and current President Barack Obama’s admitted drug use (Blow) in his first book, should we really care if our athletes toke it up once in a while? Why is the media and subsequently the sports fan so appalled by suddenly affluent successful men in their early

ency act of 2009, is a bill that Ron Paul has introduced to Congress calling for the Federal Reserve to be audited by the end of 2010. In typical Paul fashion, the bill is simple and to the point and completely free of pork. Paul, as a long time critic of the Fed and frivolous spending of his Washington “coworkers”, wants rampant spending to be squashed and for the Federal Reserve to have fiscal responsibility through Congressional oversight. He, along with a score of other Congressmen and women, believe that the Fed should be held accountable for the money it has and spends, just like all other citizens are. You may be asking yourself, wait a second… isn’t the Fed part of the government?
Remarks By the Pope Today 6,000 people in Africa died of Aids and 10,000 more got infected with the disease. I guess those 10,000 Africans didn't watch the press conference where the Pope advised them to abstain from sex and that "the disease cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms" This issue goes beyond religious blindness and naivety, this is just plain stupidity and a complete tragedy. The Pope is not just one man with an opinion, he is a figure that represents 1,100,000,000 people in this world and 130 million of those Christians live in Africa. We all know the Treasury, the branch of the federal government responsible for our money. However, few realize the importance of the Federal Reserve or even what it is. The name alone conjures up the essence of a government agency, through use of the word federal; yet its name is a bit of a misnomer as it has little to do with the federal government and everything to do with how much interest you pay and the actual value of the money in your pocket. (Which, according to Ron Paul’s website, has declined 95% since the Fed’s birth in 1913.) If you want more information on this bill you can visit www.ronpaul.com, and should you want this bill to gain some traction in congress, there is a section where you can email your representatives to show support.

RELIGION \\ Sikhism

Sikhism is often associated with the image of bearded men in turbans, and they are often stereotyped as potential terrorists. But Sikhism, a monotheistic religion started in Punjab about 500 years ago, is actually the fifth largest in the world with over 25 million followers and stresses the importance of leading a good moral life. The beard is actually the kesh, or uncut hair, and the turban, or the kirpan, are actually part of a uniform meant to unify Sikhs with their religion. Sikhism was founded on the wisdoms of Guru Nanak and ten consecutive Sikh Gurus who worship a universal God devoid of human form. Sikhism is a wholly progressive religion, emphasizing the equality of all humankind, and disapproves on differentiating between sex, social class, or faith. The foundation of Sikhism belief is revealed in the words of Guru Nanak, "Realization of truth is higher than all else. Higher still is truthful living.” Its followers consider it a sacred duty to contribute to social welfare, and to enhance one’s abilities and personality to the maximum. _ELSIE PUIG \\
Ecstasy: quite simply one of the most popular “illegal” drugs in the new millennium. What the public does not know is that ecstasy or MDMA has been an effective tool in couple’s therapy and other psychoanalytical ventures. Abuse of the drug in nightclubs lead to its damnation into the DEA’s Schedule I classification in 1985, (Schedule I indicating the drug has a high potential for recreational abuse and no accepted medical use). Funding for potential medical uses was depleted. The circular logic from the government comes into play leaving us with a classic catch-22. No deemed medicinal purpose = no funding = no research into potential uses. Veterans who suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), along with rape and trauma victims could have access to repressed memories and allow them to communicate openly, showing them that recovery is possible, eventually with no drugs involved. It brings us to the age-old saying that “there are no bad drugs, only bad users”. If you are responsible with a controversial substance, it could yield positive results. _NELSON HERNANDEZ \\

What about the fans, who tend to enjoy themselves at sporting events with a few drinks, a couple lines, or a few drags of a joint, and then go on to drive home? Before passing judgments on easy targets, a majority of which stems from jealousy, members of the media and fans should take a step back and imagine themselves in the athletes shoes. every day life like the rest of us. I hope I can help people be a little bit more understanding and less judgmental of actions taken by athletes recreationally. And for people who argue that athletes are role models, and kids will copy everything they do, what about rock stars who get busted for heroin, or politicians involved in sex, lies, and cheating scandals? I know it is bad for a child to see a picture of Michael Phelps hitting a bong, but I think it is worse for kids to see A-Rod’s success and attribute it to cheating. Kids don’t need to see athletes on performance enhancing drugs and think that’s the only way they think they can make it. Kids are smart enough to realize Phelps didn’t win 8 gold medals hitting the bong every day, or going to strip clubs every night, or having a few beers. None of those things are morally correct, but to put things in perspective, marijuana is a not steroid. Marijuana is
\\ 22 april 09 \\ volume 1 issue 4 4
not even alcohol, which, a lot of the times is pushed under the rug because it is legal, but is the cause of many more arrests and careers spinning out of control than cannabis. The lesson of the day should be that kids should look up to their parents, and model themselves after hard working, middle class individuals, putting food on the table for them, and a roof over their head. Kids do appreciate that. If they have to look elsewhere for guidance, then that is when children lose sight of the judgment and morals instilled into them by their parents and get swallowed into a decadent lifestyle. Most people party proportionally to work and so do athletes. They are just under the microscope in the public’s eye. I just hope that the younger generation of the media and the young sports fan decide to think differently about athletes and marijuana use, and quantify it with other problems in the sports world.

LIVING UNRESTRAINED WITHOUT DRUGS It’s funny being drug free in this day and age. Everyone knows at least thirty people who seem to take drugs of any sort (Well, thirty that at least we know of). In fact, all of my best friends have at least smoked a lot of marijuana. These are people that I have known some of them almost 20 years of my existence on this planet. But, me on the other hand, I have never tried anything. Yes, I am a real person and in all honesty I have no real desire to try out drugs. I do drink. Not a lot but enough. I also don’t have to get drunk at parties to have a good time. I just act like the fool that I am in any state of mind. And do you want to know something even crazier? I don’t even feel peer pressure anymore. The last time I felt peer pressure was senior year of high school, which was five years ago. And it wasn’t even that severe since all my friends were drunk and high when they were doing this. Seriously, my friends know that if I want to smoke (which I never said I wouldn’t do, I just have no desire) then I will smoke. I actually have a list of about 6 or 7 people that want to smoke with me to see what I am like high. The top three slots are for my best friends, then various girls that I like, then extraneous people.
I haven’t personally been in too many situations where I have felt peer pressure as I wasn’t the coolest person in high school and I don’t really have too much time to party. But, this is a decision that I have made. This is my life and this is how I am going to live it, by my rules and regulations. I have never been the type of person to say I am never going to smoke. I have felt the temptation before but I can get a lot more done being a lazy normal person than a lazy stoned person. I know who I am and it took me a long time to say that and mean it. But, I just know that as of right now, weed isn’t for me.
And another thing, I am not at all against the marijuana culture, I like reggae, pothead comedies (Pineapple Express is genius), I don’t understand Phish though. But, that’s a whole different story right there. I have so many friends that just light up in front of me and I don’t even care. I have been second hand high, but never first hand. I have also never smoked anything. But, that is because I am an actor and I don’t want to get hooked on cigarettes or anything that can damage my instrument. And that right there is a whole different essay for a whole different time. Listen, if you don’t smoke or do any drugs like I do, you are not alone. We all know that there is no way marijuana will be illegal ten years from now (well hopefully). But, still it’s a choice to be weed free that I have made and as a performer it does benefit me. There is a stereotype for performers out there that we all do drugs to be creative. I consider that to be a myth. None of my pothead performer friends are much more creative than I am and we all get a lot too nonetheless.

with you and in this profession, with so many families involved, you appreciate a straight shooter,” Cristobal said in reference to Garcia. Even with three consecutive 20-loss seasons, several prominent names were rumored to be candidates for the opening. They included ousted Sacramento Kings coach Reggie Theus who once completed a reclamation project of his own at New Mexico State as well as current Virginia Commonwealth assistant Tony Pujols and former players Ed Pickney, an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and local hero Tim Hardaway who made a late push for consideration but Garcia was adamant about giving Thomas the opportunity and did not interview any of the individuals. For Garcia, the chance to hire a coach with a strong background at the elite level of basketball was an opportunity he could not pass up even with several notorious off-the-court incidents hindering his reputation. “I’ve know Isiah for a long time and I can guarantee one thing: we are getting a great human being,” Garcia said. “Nobody will out work this man.” The hire gives the Sun Belt Conference its third prominent coach recently added as the mid-major is becoming the trendy destination for coaches to prove their worth.
28 MARCH While last season evoked challenges, it’s the positive players that will endure struggles where a costly mistake, which is inevitable at quarterback, can render him sidelined and losing the fluidity and confidence that allow players to thrive during fierce competition. “Sure that happened. I would look over my shoulder at the beginning of the season wondering if a bad decision would cost me playing time,” Harris said. “But after the Duke game I just started going out and having fun. I just stayed confident, not trying to prove myself on each and everything play. I
Former LSU coach John Brady was fired last year just two years removed from taking the Tigers to the 2006 Final Four and shortly afterwards was hired by the Red Wolves. Just two months later, Mike Jarvis, formerly of St. Johns during their successful late 90s run, was lured to take over at Florida Atlantic. Joining them is Isiah Thomas who has oft been criticized for being a tremendous player that hasn’t been able to transcend his successes to the sidelines. In six seasons, Thomas went 187-223 with both the Knicks and the Indiana Pacers as he took the latter to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons but is mostly remembered for his failures in the big apple which were publicized and often made him a scapegoat for a demanding New York media and fan base that continually pleaded for his dismissal.
knew I was playing for my teammates.” Harris displayed the reasons why winning has become synonymous with his name. It’s his character, poise, mental toughness, leadership, work ethic, and his ability to transform any seemingly minute event into a motivational tool and often into a positive outcome. But mostly, he just stayed positively focused waiting for his chance to take over the show. Last season may not have been a complete success, but it was an invaluable experience builder. So many freshmen had to make the adjustment to college ball.” When asked about living
Nonetheless, Thomas is ready to put his past struggles behind him and eager for his latest challenge that will hopefully result differently for him than at his previous stop. “I’m very excited to be here and I’m very excited to bring the best players here. At the end of the day, we want to be known as one of the top basketball programs in the country.” The move is arguably the most newsworthy in Golden Panthers’ athletic history and will almost surely give attention to a team that could certainly use an adrenaline boast. For the players, they are both ecstatic and thrilled to be guided by an individual with a storied basketball resume`.
up to this year’s expectations, Harris replied, “We will live up to what this team needs. We will fight for an ACC Championship and national contention.” With Marve’s exit, Harris has earned his opportunity
