EDITOR’S NOTE FRESH Hearing the word fresh might sound common for you, but what’s it got to do with the magazine? This semester’s issue is about creating something novel, pristine, and pleasing to your senses of hearing and sight. Bigger stories from the unexpected individuals would shock you to your core. I have to admit that managing this project was a challenge for me. Thinking about how it would all come together was also a risk I was willing to take. For this magazine, we want to empower campus journalism to the BukSUans. I honor the editorial board and staff for putting passion in their services which helped us strengthen the organization and all of the projects that we desire to achieve. We, the Collegianer, would like to thank our adviser, Dr. Lalevie C. Lubos, who has believed in the team from the day we swore our oath to the office. Also, we are grateful for the expertise of Dr. Rodello D. Pepito, Dr. Irish Vivian M. Lorenzo and Danielle Blanca G. Oracion for giving their time to review all written works. We also extend our gratitude to Darius Leo Castada II for his contribution to this issue, adding spice to the project. Most importantly, we thank Bukidnon State University for being our main inspiration to keep the school publication open to fresh ideas. Get up and keep going. Laban BukSU!

HIERARCHY of

PRIORITIZATION “Mister President, naumpisahan na natin. Sana ipagpatuloy na natin ang pagpapasa sa SOGIE equality bill,” cried out Gretchen Diez, a member of the LGBTQ+ community who caught the attention of the Filipino netizens after a janitress stopped her from entering into the female’s comfort room. On the 13th of August, Diez rushed to the toilets of a mall in Cubao only to pee yet she was blocked by the janitress and detained her inside the mall. There were women who asked the janitress to do such act from the fear of harassment. She called out for help from her friends to phone the cops and was brought to the Quezon City. Instead of hearing out her stand, they arrested her. Due to the media’s impact with regards to sexuality, she was released and made her move to call out for President Rodrigo Duterte to quickly implement the proposed SOGIE bill. The Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) Bill was written on February 17, 2017 and submitted by the Committee on Women and Gender Equality. It highlights on prohibiting the discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community (Refer to House Bill No. 4982). After a thorough reading on the topic, is it still necessary to give this our utmost attention? This is not to break those involved in this ongoing issue yet the Philippines has already made several anti-discriminatory laws that have considered not only a certain group but the country as a whole to be involved in such practices. As for those Filipinos in the LGBTQ+ community who fear any form of discrimination, ordinances in different cities ensure that this would be properly observed and practiced. If someone with acne is being discriminated, do we really have to make a law on the “Anti-Acne Discrimination Act” that would imprison those who would try to make such a big deal out of it? Safeguarding the rights of every Filipino, no matter who you are, have been given importance to ensure avoiding discriminating to the society such as the 1987 Philippine Constitution and the even the Magna Carta for Women. Anyone who is dealing with this heavy topic must look on the other side that needs to be looked upon directly. Just because you have a broken arm doesn’t mean that you will not be given importance as to one losing gallons of blood by the minute. The Philippines needs to focus on the main priorities that would be implemented and well-funded such as the issue of the Filipino farmers. Without them, there would be no food on our plates. We often think of small things as unimportant when they actually create a larger impact that would jeopardize the society as a whole. What is being presented to us through the media influences us, thus, we think that the government always talks nonsense but they have made programs that emphasizes the needs especially those of the poor. This generation may be the start of welcoming the LGBTQ+ but that does not mean that the spotlight is on them. This SOGIE bill, if implemented, might also be a cause for the members of this community to abuse their powers. Overuse of the benefits given would also lead to harm. Currently, we are fighting the battle against poverty and climate change. If these are solved, then we may move on to other issues that needs attention. But how will we be able to solve these if we Filipinos would not even bother to follow the simplest rules. This is discipline at its work. No matter how many times we would try to adjust to the needs of the citizens, it would be no use when all we do is rant without any action. Being able to use out your voice for the public is empowerment, such as what Diez did to defend her rights. But we need to look on the wider screen that our country needs help to improve. The simple values that were taught to us as children need to remain as adults even though we have enhanced ourselves to be logical and critical thinkers. Empowerment is useless when we only say it but not mean it. It was wrong of those people involved to look down on Diez for her sexuality, this is the problem that we need to change not through a law but start within ourselves. We are all human and we often make mistakes yet it is in one’s self that requires a better change. The little acts of kindness that we make will create a difference not only for the LGBTQ+s but also for everyone’s own good as well.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS FEATUTURE

BY KHER TYSON BASTINGA

A

lot has happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 3; a lot of superheroes sacrificed their lives for the sake of humanity’s survival. The fans shed tears as our favorites withered through Thanos’ overwhelming power. This was probably the most sought-after movie of all time. There were too many legendary battles, crazy story plots, time travels, deaths and even revivals to be compressed within just three hours. It was a bittersweet yet satisfying kind of ending. Most of the fans assume that this would be the end of the stories for our favorite superheroes we grew up and lived with. But just like other things, this was an opening for a new world of MCU. In the history starting from Stan Lee’s imagination, to creation, to its first movie release in 2008 (Iron Man), MCU has already released a total of 23 films in which all fans live for. Let us have a little review of what happened in the acclaimed last Avengers movie. About five years ago, Thanos snapped his finger and half of life in the universe vanished with no trace. The remaining Avengers were left with no choice but to live with their ghosts and lost hope for their revival until one rat accidentally stumbled the machine of Antman making him able to go back to modern time from the realms where time was not affected by Thanos. His arrival sparked hope and gave them a chance to revive the other fallen Avengers and fight Thanos. Contrary to emotional knowledge, the “Avengers: Endgame” was not the last movie of MCU Phase 3. Cue drumroll please. In fact, “Spiderman: Far From Home” marked the official end of the MCU Phase 3 and expectedly set important plot points for the MCU Phase 4. For the latest Spiderman series (SPOILER ALERT!), Tony Stark died from the previous movie and Peter Parker was left alone. He was also one of the victims of the five-year transitional period. After Endgame, Peter Parker continues to live his life as a student and was left with a massive responsibility passed to him from Tony Stark. Also, this movie introduced new faces like Mysterio and the Elementals which we might see in the MCU Phase 4 again.

03

So, what’s next Marvel? Well, there are flooding fan theories all over social media which may be confusing but we will try our best to get the realest. Months ago, there were rumors that the “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” would be the first movie to be released in the MCU Phase 4 and was considered to be the top priority but got cancelled because a director allegedly got fired from his Tweets. The MCU officially confirmed some movies that could kickstart the 4th phase. These include the Black Panther sequel, wherein itsr predecessor reached a billion dollars and was even nominated as Best Picture in the Academy Awards, yet still managed to bag home three awards, Best Original Music Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. The fate of Black Widow was already shown in the last Avengers movie but the MCU definitely have ears for their fans, yet a prequel is ought to be released of how Agent Natasha Romanoff became the Black Widow. The MCU officially announced that Captain Marvel will take over as a lead character in the MCU Phase 4 movies. There has also been talk that “The Eternals” in which the ever-gorgeous Angelina Jolie will take the role as a major character. Another exciting news is that they announced the development of the movie “Shang-Chi” which reveals the first main superhero of Asian descent. Dr. Strange, together with Scarlet Witch, will also have another film for the eyes of the fans. “Thor 4” might get a crossover with the Guardians of the Galaxy as well. Disney acquired 21st Century Fox Entertainment with $71million which means that other limited series will be released by Disney and open for more films and TV series. Scarlet Witch and Vision series as well as Hawk Eye were the first few announced. A lot of people asked why the MCU only focuses on the Avengers? X-Men and Fantastic Four are part of the universe as well but we must wait for quite some time when these will be ready for a crossover. In a world of anxiety and fear, Marvel is giving us inspiration on how to get up and fight, reminding us that no matter how big a problem would be, we must sacrifice to win for the greater good.

TARRIFICATION

BILL M

RICE BY NOEL SAYSON

WHEN HELL S WRATH RAINS UPON EARTH Does it puzzle you when a random fire burned down the only place where it literally rains for majority of the year? Do you wonder how it happened or what caused such catastrophe? When something as alarming as some of the major forests in the world, that is also a major source of the oxygen which is essential to our survival, is burning to the ground, it is only fair for us humans, as the caretakers, to be aware of what went down during these forest fires. When Miley Cyrus posted a photo about her home in California that was burned down to ashes, people barely talked about it or gave a nod to it. No, I am not talking about the million-dollar building that she and her family share, but the actual millions of dollars of biodiversity loss. Before we delve into the alleged political agenda, let us tackle the basic knowledge about forest wildfires first. Wildfires are uncontrolled blazes targeting a random combustible rural area and runs in a rapid pace of up to fourteen miles per hour, consuming each and every organism and infrastructure hindering its path (NatGeo, 2019). A wildfire occurs for many different reasons: it could be natural, like lightning that strikes during dry season and droughts in a highly flammable area; and then there is the manmade causes which could arise from debris fires, and worse is the possibility of arson. In 2019 alone, four of the major forest areas have been seized by wildfires. These are the vast tracts of forests of Indonesia, Brazil, Siberia, and Central Africa. The wildfires in Indonesia and in Sub-Saharan Africa are not something people are really surprised about because they fall literally during the “fire season” of the year wherein it is known as the driest season. Like any other reason in a dominantly agricultural country, manmade fires among these areas causes the clearance of an agricultural land for other profitable crops to grow in their places. Unsurprisingly, this has always been a common practice that is rampant in these areas. But to mitigate the situation, experts say that the fires this year were not as bad as what occurred in the past decades. And yet, these wildfires have somehow spurred a commotion of reactions from individuals tying them to the environmental crisis that the world is facing as of the moment. Just because wildfires that are supposed to be benefiting the farmers are not surprising doesn’t mean that they are not alarming. Reports even have it that the cloud of smoke during the fire in the Russian region of Siberia was as big as the size of all the European Union countries patched together, that’s approximately 5 million km2. One could only imagine the damages it had done not only to the humans, but also to the environment as well. And people are not realizing it. Yet. Particularly, in the rainforest of Amazon, doesn’t it alarm you? Fires are indeed inevitable and are imminent during the dry season, and yet it transpired during the wettest time of the year. Many experts believe that majority of the fires across Brazil are intentionally caused by human activity – to make way of illegal miners. Allegations towards the Brazilian government have not been proven to be true, as of the moment, but when the wettest forest in all of the earth burnt down to a crisp, where there is even the existence and presence of rain, something will never add up. This year’s fire may not be as bad as what ensued during the past decade, but it doesn’t mean it was nothing, especially with people now are getting actually involved and more woke. The takeaway among all these wildfire knowledges is the fact that capitalist companies are willing to go through extreme measures just to maximize profit even if it means endangering the lives of millions of people and other essential living organisms. We are all for improvement and moderate globalization, especially for a struggling country like Brazil. But when the ways don’t justify the means, and the consequences outweighing the benefits are undeniably visible, it’s time for people to recalibrate their actions and redo their decisions. The effects of the aftermath are something we normally don’t care about because people feel oblivious. Lungs are not filled with the smoke from inhaling the selfishness of other governments, or other profit-driven companies that destroy lands for their sole benefit. Of course, most of it don’t necessarily matter to all of us since we are an indirect hit. As humans, we are devoid of feeling sympathy towards the environment that gives us life, right? We can never stop forest wildfires, but we can stop our corrupt way of thinking and putting our self-centered motives on top of the profit. We may not feel it now, but what about in the uncertain future?

THE ART OF SATISFACTION OVER LITTLE THINGS

IF THE BLIND CAN SEE

We all have these small moments or things in our lives that often go unnoticed or unappreciated because we think they are either unimportant or useless. We live in a society that observes big and highclass accomplishments. We see happiness with the possession of material things like the latest phone model, a luxurious house, a new car or a bunch of expensive clothes. There is nothing wrong in finding happiness through wealth, it can satisfy our comforts and wants but we can also find happiness even if we are living in a modest way. We belong in an era where we always appreciate and treasure big things over small ones. Sometimes, we go through downfalls, it might be a loss of someone we dearly loved or a failure of something. We often encounter different crises or calamities which are indeed beyond our expectations. In an instant, there is nothing left in us and we finally became hopeless because of our tragic experiences. There are many people who show their sympathy and generosity by lending us a hand when we need them. They offer genuine help even in small ways because they care. But other people’s mentality is inadequate that it turned out to be unpleasant to give a small amount of assistance because for them, it is an insult for the victims. Imagine a situation where you see a beggar along the street, he is an old man looking so pale and hungry. Would you bother to stop by and give this less fortunate man some food or coins and help him? For me, I would because I know that every peso counts and it could fulfil an old man’s stomach. Even the smallest thing could add up and mean the world to him. That little thing could be the biggest and best thing. Reflect on it. Stop complaining because the world owes you nothing, you are in charge of your own life and you cannot be a leader if you behave like a victim. Let us believe in humanity, we should be grateful and contented for everything that we have for we are more than blessed compared to other people in this world. Stop complaining and be satisfied because life is too short to ignore millions of chances along the way and wake up with regrets.

07

Imagine a situation where a blind person asks you of how our world looks like today, how will you answer the question? Would you lie or just tell the truth? Our world is constantly changing; many reports said that is has been at the brink of destruction, it is quite alarming that we should take responsibility of it. We are fortunate to see how it looks like: we are privileged to live in it. But it is sad to say that we forgot to continually care for it. Blind people are incapable to see what we could- it is literally bad, though they have an optical disability, they can feel and visualize what is happening by observing the environment and it is adverse. People do not even realize that global problems are critical issues that cause harm to uspeople who are not blind and even for those who are. The blind is wishing for a visual acuity to see what the world gives color to life. But then, we might fail their expectations. Mountains are bald, oceans are unpleasantly green, air is dark and trash is everywhere. Pretty much sure, blind people will not wish to have it nor want to see and feel it, for what is the purpose of having a good view when you can perceive a world of uncertainties. Perhaps they would rather be blind again, avoiding themselves to suffer from environmental issues and visual impairment, and it is a total burden for them, not being selfdirected. People that are capable should impart a heroic deeds, benevolence and love to nature in their own little ways, it will surely create change, it will not just help a specific person but it has a domino effect for all. We do not have valid reasons not to do so as we are capable to do an action beyond what we could imagine, we should take one step towards addressing such environmental issues. We should be vocal and constructive towards the problem. Let us not confuse the blind people because even if they can’t see, they can feel what we can see today.

OUR INDIGENOUS WORLDVIEW OF NATURE At some point of your life, do you come with the thought that our Earth and its accoutrements only exist for our sake and for no intrinsic reason? Somehow, did you perceive nature and its natural resources and beings merely exist for consumption and utilization? If yes, then you need to be reminded again on what is our indigenous worldview of nature. Indigenous worldview to nature can be manifested through the different Indigenous Cultural Communities or mga lumad here in Bukidnon. Their perceptions toward nature lies a great respect for it as what we can see to their ways of life, symbols, literatures, rituals and even songs. You can say that they are in the humble position by being sensitive to their environment, by having admirable humility to nature, and by being comfortable as one along with the different forms of life to the place they live in. But, we are currently driven by changes that ignore the perspective of how we should look and act to nature. Our mindsets are being shifted to the remarkable technological changes and innovations without knowing that we are being put over by modernization to contradictions of nature. I am not trying to say that adaptation of modern innovations only complicate things, it is just that because of these, we tend to forget our indigenous worldview of nature which is an authentic idea on how we become one and responsible to the place we live in. Sometimes, we are good at saying great contributions without even doing simple actions that could benefit everyone. Yes, life is full of practicalities but having a concern only for ourselves and having superior perspective over the otherthan-human-beings will possibly lead us to destruction. We should now wake up from the hypnosis of what we think as remarkable. Our indigenous worldview of nature could provoke a creation of innovative decisions along with the emergence of modern technology with holistic alignment to our very own nature.

BULAG-BULAGAN

MATERYALISTIKONG PAMUMUHAY

At naaalala lamang tuwing may pasulit tayo.

COLUMN (FILIPINO)

Weirdo Cidric Edulsa

“Sana all may jowa...” “Sana all Cum Laude…”

LOGIC CENTRAL

DO YOU THINK THE UNIVERSITY IS READY TO ADAPT TO THE SOGIE BILL ONCE IMPLEMENTED?

Ralf G. Rapirap SBO Governor – College of Education

“Bukidnon State University is a premiere institution committed to building a sustainable life for everyone through the core values its students embody. For the decades the university has stood, it has claimed to providing graduates who are excellent, professional, equipped with integrity, commitment, and culture-sensitivity. In this modern era where the world has become more accepting and open to the various sexual orientations people are accustomed to, is Bukidnon State University ready for the SOGIE Bill? This bill is being pushed in the senate is an act prohibiting the discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression and providing penalties and sanction to those that commit illicit acts against the LGBTQ+. The SOGIE Bill aims to provide people in the third gender with equal human rights and also to educate people on what equality really means for everyone. The SOGIE Bill has been a cause for misunderstanding for a lot of people who have not yet been educated on what the bill truly means and represents. As an institution of learning, Bukidnon State University’s responsibility is to achieve gender-sensitivity and welcome learning in all forms as learning is for all ages, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs as education is not limited to only a specific race, gender or group. There are still a lot of things Bukidnon State University can do to achieve gender-sensitivity and learning for all without any forms of discrimination prior to the SOGIE Bill before it can be welcomed with open arms. At the moment, the university is not yet ready for the SOGIE Bill but it must continue to strive to enlighten the minds of its learners and to widen their horizons on all the possibilities the world has to offer and to remind us that this world is not only for men and women but for everyone who strives towards ideals of a sustainable life for all.”

Loreen L. Agujar SBO Governor – College of Business

“Anti-discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Bill needs a deep understanding and long-term discussion. Most of us don’t have any idea or don’t even understand on how and why the bill was created. It was created by our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters for them to have justice, respect and values that they need. Is our university ready to adapt the SOGIE bill? I have read and listened on the different opinions of people who might get affected. They have different stands and ideas on it, but for me, SOGIE bill is just a legal document that would be used against the violations and in my personal opinion, there’s no need for a legal document to address the said issue, it should start within ourselves. Documents cannot do something on it, it should start within ourselves on our inner aspects. We are in the University wherein the number one goal is to give our needs and everyone else. We are also trained to be ethical and professions leaders that must be seen through our thoughts and deeds. But the most viral issue regarding the bill is the additional comfort room for the LGBTQ+, which is not bad for them to feel comfortable and confident, but in our university, let us consider the basic needs of the students, faculty and all people that are affected. Our university has a lot of things to resolve more than having an additional comfort room, as long as there is no violence involved. We shall give more time to our university to weigh everything. Let us not only focus on something that won’t be beneficial to everyone, equality should be served. Everyone can experience discrimination, men, women, children, and even the PWDs. If we are to make a law that addresses the issues of discrimination, then let’s make it for everyone, a law that everybody could benefit, and let us always remember that we need to respect to be respected and the SOGIE bill is not the main solution, it is only to give us a wake-up call that respects should be gained even we don’t ask for it.”

Collegianer / Vol. 3 No. 1

Christ Jan D. Manlangit SBO Governor – College of Nursing

“I think that the university is ready to adapt to the SOGIE Bill once implemented because fighting against gender discrimination is not new to all of us. Bukidnon State University is composed of magnanimous educators and well-educated students guided by its core values. We have educators and students who are from the LGBTQ+ community and they are very much respected here in the university. Women, men, and LGBTQ+ here in the campus have received right and equal treatment and I haven’t seen any incidence of discrimination. Therefore, I can say that it will not be difficult for the university to adapt because it has been practiced already.”

Abbygail A. Nalla SBO Governor – College Arts and Sciences

“When we talk about discriminatory acts, the principal author wants us to understand that we should not deny anyone’s entry because of sexual orientation. The Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) helps a person know oneself, we should be respectful, open-minded, sensitive and understanding about these timely issues. Gender expression is an act of showing your true self whether you chose to be masculine or feminine. The SOGIE bill is legislation that would protect all persons from discrimination based on their gender expression. The university may be ready to adapt the SOGIE bill once it implemented, but first we must understand what SOGIE bill is: how it benefits the society and the country in general. Everyone must be treated equally regardless of one’s ethnicity, social class, religious affiliation or gender expression.”

Bladden Jay A. Flores SBO Governor – College of Social Development and Technology

“If the bill gets approved, then I do not see any reason for our university not to be ready. For my years of stay in this university, I have never seen any discrimination to the LGBTQ+ community, they are given the equal respect every student gets in this university. I believe that the students of Bukidnon State University are gender sensitive and openminded individuals.”

Joseph Gelacio President – Supreme Student Council

“I do not think there really is a necessity since the Philippines has been naturally accepting of the presence of the LGBTQ+ community as stated by Mr. Ryan Borja Capitulo. Our institution has fully accepted the LGBTQ+ community with open arms, even empowering them with the various activities done inside the university. On this note, I personally do not think that we are ready to take such a big leap in this change of somewhat like a social agreement. One example is the restroom outrage. We all know that this is a place where we can return the call of nature. For instance, a straight male student of BukSU may not be comfortable going about their business when there is an individual born of the opposite sex but claims to have a man’s heart present. Same goes to the women’s lavatory. Furthermore, certain questions are to be raised on the context. How are we sure that a guy claiming to be part of the LGBTQ+ community is part of it and is not wearing this façade to pursue malicious activities like peeping, taking pictures and such? That would be violating the rights of women, not to mention the possibility of sexual harassment prompting confusion and possibly more appalling consequences. Furthermore, this change would also mean a change in the students’ handbook of which is strictly followed by the students, not to mention breaking the rules and policies put up by the respective colleges. I do think that there is a way for respecting the individuality of a person but also regard the policies of the colleges with the same respect. Therefore, I express that the adaptation of the SOGIE Bill is not the road towards that.”

iversity is a common friend of Bukidnon State University. This has become the place where you are able to open up and find your true self after soul-searching for quite some time. Not everyone has the same stories to share, but all are beautiful in their own ways. For this issue, the Collegianer has chosen one particular student whose personal story will move the hearts of many.

l):

Jhasel Mae D. Odino is a 19-year-old female studying Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM). She is in her sophomore level. Your paths may have crossed as you walk along the halls and grounds of the university yet you would not notice her for you may be too busy in compiling your homework or projects. She may be quite timid and shy but this lady has got a story worth telling. Out of all the students, she showed up in the office with a soft smile. Her voice was gentle and comforting as she introduced herself and started her story. Jhasel is not your ordinary college girl. In fact, she is a member of the Higaonon, an Indigenous Cultural Community in Bukidnon. Her story begins with the earliest memory of her father, who was spreading the Word of God as a pastor in their community. Funds were not enough to help their family overcome poverty thus, bringing Jhasel to a wider community out of her own. Even as a child, she moved from household to household of relatives just to help her keep up with her education. As soon as she stepped into the realms of high school, she decided to work despite of her young age to keep her stomach full. She has also admitted that she skipped a few meals to save her allowance. The moment she got into senior high school, she realized of a bigger world and gave her a bigger goal, yet she never stopped herself from working. Eventually, she got a part-time job at a café that helped her pay her bills and meals. She described that the days were shorter and the nights were longer for she does not have any fond memories of attending class since she dedicated much of her time to her job. Before college even started, Jhasel knew that she wanted to study BSHM for she had her new dreams from the sleepless nights of working her shifts. During college, Jhasel still kept working under the same employers of the café she worked in since her time in senior high. The first few months were fine but as the days went by, only then she felt the weight of her burdens on her shoulders. Her employer told her that they would fully support her education but only when she would shift her course. This is what broke her yet she told herself that she had to be strong. She did not open up to her parents, not even to her friends. She smiled with her teeth for the people to believe that she was fine, but deep inside, she was already struggling. Her options to give up started to rise but she did not have any intentions on ending her life for she was well-aware that she did not own her life and was merely an instrument of God. On the days she felt like giving up, she prayed. On the days she was fine, she prayed. Prayer was her weapon and her faith became her main defense. One day, her prayers were answered through an instructor and she felt as if all of the heavy weight went off. After she finished her story, she let out a heavy sigh and a light laugh. She has never shared the whole thing with everyone. The contract with her and her employer ended on good terms. Even her parents still do not know the whole story but now that she has released a breath of fresh air, she is willing to tell them the whole truth. Just like other children, she did not want her parents to worry about her. She never implanted hate on anyone, not even herself for going through the hardships. Jhasel owes it all to God and she is forever grateful for remaining faithful because this brought her hope for a better future.

After knowing her story, a few questions were brought up: What is the biggest factor that has helped you to attain college? “Poverty has been the main reason for everyone not to attain college but for me, it pushed me to do beyond limits. I know suffering from poverty is not the reason not to achieve my dreams.” What was the hardest decision you ever had to make? “Some would say they can’t make it through without their parents, but it was the hardest decision I’ve made to become independent from any means of support from my parents because of poverty. But I don’t use it as a weakness not to pursue college but rather it motivates me to go and never give up.” What is the best advice you can give to your colleagues? “Advising is very difficult. It is hard to say because I haven’t reached my goals, but all I can say is that faith to God and prayers are such great things to help you keep going. Being optimistic will give an insight to remain persistent amidst all failures and struggles we have.” What aspect of yourself are you most proud of? “I do not rely on the physical aspect because it is not a big deal for me but being very patient in every aspect in my life is the characteristic that I am most proud of. The journey of being in college is not easy, some would say I should graduate on time but I do not know our fate, we should be patient along the way and which should also be mixed in a positive way of thinking or being optimistic.”

UL

Who do you most admire in life? “My father has done a lot of great things that I have witnessed. He serves to be my inspiration in schooling and remain sturdy in difficult times. He does not practice what he preaches to us but also to the people around him. He is a missionary that spreads the Good News that God has offered for us. He is passionately serving God without any hesitations to stop. He always fulfils his duties as a father and in mission field. He is always in my heart and will never be replaced by anything.”

The Official Student Publication of Bukidnon State University

What is your biggest fear and how do you intend to conquer it? “As what I have said, I’m independently living in my own without relying on my parents. I’m always praying to not to have illnesses of any sort. I have no one to lean on and it is hard because I am not dependent to others as they think that I am strong enough to fight against anything, but I am very grateful of my friends as they always show their deepest concerns to me even though I am not open to them. I am always praying to stay away from sickness as much as possible.” What is your strongest personal quality? “No work is difficult to a dedicated person, there are no challenges that would be complex to answer if you have positive insights to address it. And also, add your passion, perseverance, optimism and consistency in any circumstances, though failures will be drawn to us, they will also give us enough pressure and motivation to continue what we love to do.” What motivates you? “I always being reminded by the struggles of others, I always consider them as an inspiration and encouragement that even those who struggled in life achieved what they want, how come am I not able to do so as poverty always remind me to strive harder, not to help my own self but others as well.” What is your goal? “Finishing college is my main goal, not just for myself but for my family too. I would help them to exit poverty and to experience something new to this life. Also, I have my dreams in becoming an entrepreneur. I want to have my own café in Malaybalay City inspired by my heritage from the Indigenous Peoples of Bukidnon.”

MASTS Reminiscing the 2019: Experience By Alexa Eulogio

In an Island Born of fire Lies a hope that soars high Where your eyes will not tire ‘Cause there’s nature that’ll make you sigh To be chosen, to be trusted Once in a lifetime opportunity So prepare yourself to be constructed To bring forth the trophy of pride and victory Standing in the crowd of Giants Feeling like a peck of dust Doubting if it could pass And will not be the last? Through the hustling promise of the violent waves Taps the troubled and fearful heart Cheering all those doubtful inhibitions Appreciating your offered art Become a soldier in that battle You lost but at least with an honor So don’t look down and be little ‘Cause you already made something bigger Compose thyself, do not present your emotions best Hide your truth, your fragile state Being a failure is not your fate So don’t drag yourself and think your least Commend yourself and enjoy the beauty Sitting on the shore, feeling lightly There on the white island, the Sunken Cemetery Old Church Ruins, and the island of Mantigue Think about the things you’ve claimed Silently wanted by the thousand souls Memories and friendship have been gained Remember, you’re the one that fits That’s the dusk of your experienced opportunity Dragging you down, testing your mentality Wait ‘till the dawn of your victory Swallow your failure, shouting your Glory In that Island Born of fire Lies the memories and lessons that will not fade in sight

OPINION

LABYRINTH IN

FRESH PERSPECTIVES BY KRISTINE JOY DONGOGAN

“I respect you” – a simple phrase that gives great impact. I usu-

ally hear this phrase everywhere, but what’s next? After words, actions should be followed, but in some cases this phrase is only taken for granted. Everyone desires respect but usually social conflicts are still present in the society. Given the fact that judgement on looks, colors, and the way they dress are patterned in foreign countries, immense number of people tend to lower their identities and capabilities. Usually they think that they do not belong to what the standard says. The society’s gossips are redirecting point of views and its actions are sometimes portraying inevident feedbacks, which damage people’s mental settings. It hurts people’s pride. The sad truth. Isn’t it? We often forget that even silence can be contagious like diseases. It can destroy a person’s soul which might direct a person to be depressed. As we all know, the diverse society with varying cultural backgrounds and ethnicities has made the world prioritize and advertise global equality and respect. Ambasadors of nations, spokespersons and powerful leaders are promoting its effectivity towards world peace. Genders, socioeconomic classes, political identities, and religions are given freedom for a prospective world. But why are there still people who cannot feel the global equality? Instead of being grateful to the society’s programs against discriminations, why are there still uncertainties towards the respect each person is getting? Our minds are like a labyrinth where we conceive information as an entrance and we formulate conclusions as an exit. Like a maze, the information is processed in different views and assumed to be correct based on how they foresee the environment. No one is indeed a copy of another. Everyone is differently unique and is thinking in their own way. Though people use politically correct words nowadays, there are sensations where they could misinterpret the society’s judgement. Society sets invisible barriers between the privileged and those who are not. These are the common reasons why even though the unprivileged individuals envision enormous ambitions, hindrances appear in realizing their dreams.

17

Assume that a family’s status is poor, where the parents are unemployed. When a child on this family is born, he or she should be raised according to the household’s upbringings and decisions. The child is entitled to an infinite prospect in life but his or her outlooks may be affected due to the constraints of what the society is foretelling him or her. In here, a child’s view of what is equal is different. It is the mentality in which people are limiting themselves from aspiring big dreams. In the Philippines, one in every ten Filipinos aged 6 to 24 years is an out of school child and youth (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2019). In connection, a number of children in poverty line are affected in all the basic security centres, education services, social welfare services and healthcare services. Though the government is performing its roles through the 4 P’s (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program), it won’t be sufficient to aide and embolden people to strive for success. At times, people’s thoughts could lead to job misconceptions in the view of many. It’s that the labor-labelled jobs are assumed by people to be paying in lower salaries than those career jobs situated in offices. People’s standards in selecting work opportunities are based on these especially in the Philippines. What and who exactly is right or wrong here? The poor can never say they couldn’t acquire professions like the white-collared jobs, nor can the rich can say they couldn’t possibly be positioned in blue-collared jobs. But in the greater sense, no job is really better than the other. Every action and system have been designed in the best way possible for a person’s interest and competence. Self–respect is deprived within the process of thinking that one’s status can never be changed. Thus, it is the mind which dictates a person that one is greater than the other. Indeed, the power of thoughts is immeasurable. We can say that our perspectives sometimes fail our minds. We confuse ourselves with the respect of what the society is setting. In order to be successful, one should adjust to the demands of the changing world. We may be stuck up in the process and can’t grasp the visions we had envisioned from the start. What really is wrong with our minds? What really pulls us into the pit? Is it the setting of how we interpret respect? Or is it our false assumptions of our crude mentality? One should never look down on themselves. In the maze of life, one can get lost but could still go back and find the finish line to victory. The world can never disrespect you as long as we find the respect that we are looking for within ourselves.

OPINYON

PAGPAPALIT ISTILO BY KRISTINE OGAN JANE DONG

I

“You do note is the lier is my peyk.”

The Official Student Publication of Bukidnon State University

The

FEAR of

STARTING

OVER BY IVY ABELLANOSA AND KRIZIA JADE PINARA

he idea of starting over sparks some kind of fear to everyone. Nobody wants to go back from nothing but the broken pieces of what used to be. Sometimes, there are situations in life that you never expected to happen but the Fates will always find its way to changing what was and what has been. Then you start questioning and doubting yourself. Is it worth it? Will I make it? Can I do it? The sufferings of adjusting to new life and new perspectives always leave you questioning if you can do it or not. Just like leaving your childhood hometown to transfer to a new one, the pang of homesickness will always haunt you; the same way the scent of an ex-lover or your favorite person would make you miss them but not the toxic situations they put you through; failing to reach the required mark just so you can stay in the course you prefer; losing one of your family members who is extremely vital in your life; even rewriting your 150-word essay in the last part of your final exam because it is disorganized when you only have two minutes is too much of a risk. You break down. You would feel hopeless, and you start ask yourself how you turned incompetent and weak. And then just like how Thanos snapped his fingers, you become someone whom you think is pathetic and insignificant in a world where everybody wins except you. Your once confident self instantly transforms to a person full of doubts and anxieties. It feels like your life is less meaningful. But sometimes, life forces you to reboot, whether you want to or not. Leaving something you are used to is not always something we look forward or want in our lives. Human as we are, we get too attached to the idea of having a routine and staying in schedule that any segue would ultimately lead us to failure. It is not easy to start over, but what if its the only choice? You will never move forward if you are looking back. You will not have a better future if you keep on holding on to the past. Starting over does not need to have all things new. You are not really beginning completely fresh. Your past experiences, failures and successes have all taught you something you never expect. You either come up stronger or bitter, but bear in mind that trials are everywhere and you are one of the tested persons so you better keep going and pursue what your heart desires. Nothing stands between you and achieving the life you are dreaming of as long as you take that big leap of faith. Sticking to the things you are already used to will hinder your growth. That is why education is progressive. When you choose to suffer by being afraid of change, then maybe you deserve that. But when you choose to change for the better, then everything will be fine. You should not worry about it because it is part of your existence as a human being. You are bound to get hurt, shed tears and feel the pain when your life is not going to the direction you want or when your goal is not going as planned. You need to accept that not everything you worked for will lead you to triumph. You need to acknowledge the pain, experience it, and move on from it. Remember that things happen for a reason. Never be discouraged just because some people are not as brave as you. Even when the critics tell you to quit schooling because youre failing, keep going and do better. Even when you are too hurt and upset of that broken relationship, accept the fact that you are not really meant for each other. Even when your loved one passed away, move on and remember all your happy memories together. Nothing stays forever, not even our life. Remember that it is okay to fail, what is not okay is giving up just because you did. The journey you are stepping in is not about anyone else but you. You have your own path; it is alright if you start working again on the things that you already made. Ignore what other people say. Rediscover your purpose; always rise after you fall. Back to zero does not mean back to nothing. It is a freely given chance for you to readjust your focus but with more caution and efficiency. The beauty of starting over does not lie on your will to change the failures of your actions; it lies on the fact that when you finally decide to do so, you are no longer starting from scratch, but from the broken pieces of what your life once was. Remember that not everything broken is ugly and useless.

LATHALAIN

BY NOEL SAYSON

A

Heart ditto, like doon, vlog dito, vlog doon.

Just Another Stranger BY ALEXA EULOGIO

W

hile he had me through his voice, I lost mine. Slightly sliding the door of our schools’ music room I peeked inside and saw a man in front of the piano playing the saddest song I have ever heard yet it somehow gave warmth to my heart. Every key of the piano was pressed roughly yet it didn’t fail to comfort me. His voice sounded so painful and tragic. Bitter memories flashed in my mind. Suddenly, my heart felt heavy that I wanted to cry. Before my tears started to fall, I rushed to the rooftop of our school. Sitting and facing the sunset along with the cold breeze of the wind, I let my emotions burst. I have heard so many songs and got captured by many melodies but only his music tamed my heart. It dug my deepest sorrow and ignited the pain but it brought me peace. “Miss, are you okay?” It startled me when I heard a voice interrupt my thoughts. I looked up and saw the man in the music room with his kind and caring eyes, giving me his handkerchief. Although he got me with his voice, I ignored him. He is a stranger and I’m an introvert. But instead of leaving me, he didn’t. “Do you need help?” he asked me again because he knew at that moment, without words, I will be needing him. He sat down and leveled his gaze to mine. Starting that fateful day, as I hardly pushed him away, he insistently held out his hand to me. I’m glad he never gave up. He brought a smile to my face. I started to open myself to others. From strangers, we became the best of friends. Although I still had my doubts, with a heated face I told him that I already love him. My heart was beating wildly due to embarrassment and anticipation of his response. I averted my gaze but a minute had passed he didn’t say a word. With courage, I looked at him again only to see him trying to suppress a smile. He held my chin. “Don’t worry, I think I like you more than I’m allowed to like someone”. After he said those words, all my inhibitions vanished. I’m laying my cards on him. Now, I have an answer to my question. The reason why only his music captivates me the most is because he knows the anthem of my heart. We don’t need other people to complete us, but the truth is, having someone to hug you and accept your flaws is the most comforting thing in the world. He changed my life but I didn’t know there was more to come. I always praised him for his beautiful voice. I believe he has the talent to connect to the wounded hearts. Unfortunately, he never sang in front of anybody except me. I felt special but I told him to explore wider horizons and I will be his number one fan. Indeed, he widened his horizons. His voice has reached many hearts. His name became known to the world. Along with his fame, he has forgotten me and his promises. I remember the time when I had to be in the crowd like all his other fans begging for his time and a moment with him. He often forgets our special occasions together. I have to endure all those canceled dates, movie nights and forgotten anniversaries alone. I knew that he is drifting away from me. But could he at least warn me? Painful goodbyes are not those times when two lovers broke up or when one dies but it is leaving without words. You don’t know when to stop or until when you should continue to hope that he will come back. I missed his hoarse laugh that unfailingly fills the room when he sings. When I was still his only audience, he would always hear my voice even in a whisper. But now, even when I shout, my voice won’t pass his ears nor make his heart remember. Now, I am here at his concert admiring him as he played the piano and as he sang passionately while the spotlights are on him. Even with all the noise, his voice is the only thing that would resonate in my ears. Our eyes suddenly met. It lasted for a minute, enough to rebuild my hope. But when he shifted his gaze to other people with the same intensity, I realize it meant nothing. Now, I’m just another stranger who loves him, carrying bittersweet memories.

BOOK REVIEW

The Marsh King’s Daughter – Karen Dionne THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER is a truly amazing novel—it has a compelling story and a successful quasi-retelling of a classic fairytale. Karen Dionne has the ability to weave the fairytale element into a modern suspense novel in a way that it felt authentic. This book shines most in Dionne’s portrayal of the main character’s mindset. Having grown up in captivity, yet unaware she was being held captive for much of her life, Helena’s way of interacting with the world is - needless to say - quite complicated. Dionne sketches a character who is authentically uncomfortable with social customs: things like small talk and table manners escape her, and for good reason. Growing up on the marsh, the only rules she knew were those made by her father. Dionne’s sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of how the main character struggles to integrate into and assimilate with modern American culture was truly compelling. Majority of the book takes place in flashbacks, and most of these flashbacks are focused on describing life in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The author does a fantastic job developing this atmosphere and painting a picture of life on the marsh: from hunting, foraging, and survival skills, she convincingly describes life on the UP. This book suits readers who are looking for a story with lots of outdoor and culture-related things and less psychological suspense. The author does a great job creating atmosphere and writing a nuanced, sophisticated exploration of a survivor’s mindset. Readers with the right expectations will enjoy it.

Limasawa Street – Ben&Ben “Minsan siya’y para sa iyo, pero minsan siya’y paasa…” a line that hits hard from one of the most famous OPM songs of our time, Kathang Isip, by the 9-piece folk-pop band, Ben&Ben. If they have made our hearts cry, then we’d be crying a bit harder with their debut album Limasawa Street. This 13-track album was released on May 12, 2019. What makes this worth listening to is the different stories that each track offers, Pagtingin is a song about being certain of love at the right time. They also have touched the souls in their song, Godsent, which is perfect for the dream wedding come true. Not only are their songs about love for a significant other, but also love for the country in the music of Sampaguita. To sum this all up, Ben&Ben has not failed to greatly impress the music industry of OPM, this is one step for us, Filipinos, to love our own. Words are not enough for this album review, stream the album on Spotify or purchase the album on Shopee now!
