INTRODUCTION TO SONGWRITING

Emily Roig Rising 6th Graders – rising 8th Graders Session I: June 27 – July 1 • 9 a.m – 12 p.m. Session II: August 1 - 5 • 9 a.m – 12 p.m. $230 per session Session I and II can be taken as stand-alone camps or combined for a more in-depth experience.

• Bring a healthy snack and a filled water bottle to camp each day.

Do you like words? Do you like music? Do you like creating something from nothing ? Join local singer/songwriter (and Spanish educator) Emily Roig for this first-ever Collegiate songwriting camp!

In this camp, we will share the music, bands, and singers that we love to listen to and discuss why these artists bring us so much joy. We will also learn about differing approaches to the songwriting and creative process, and we will discover and discuss the components of a well-written song. We’ll look at a variety of genres and styles of music and writing — everything from country and rap to folk, pop and beyond. We’ll also test out a variety of exercises and tricks to help boost our creativity and even try our hand at writing an actual song from scratch.

You do not have to be a musician or play an instrument to be a part of this fun musical adventure. All you need to bring is a curious spirit and an ability to collaborate and work well with others. By the end of the week, we’ll have a deeper appreciation for music, songwriters and hopefully a handful of songs to share.

Emily is a soulful folk singer-songwriter and worship leader. Emily spent three years honing her songwriting skills in Nashville, Tenn., where she wore many hats in the music business and released a variety of musical projects, including the award-winning single “Skin.” From there, she heeded the call to move to Richmond, Va., where she spent four years on staff at Hope Church as a worship leader and songwriter and released multiple projects, including her latest single “You Are Loved.” Emily also has a passion for Spanish and education and taught middle and high school Spanish for five years while living in St. Louis. She now spends her time tutoring students in Spanish and a variety of other subjects while also performing, writing, recording and producing original music. Sometimes she even writes songs in Spanish. Learn more about Emily and her music at her website www.emilyroig.com.

In this workshop, we will dive deep into our authentic voices to explore exactly who we are as writers and how our unique layers give rise to colorful, vibrant stories only we can tell. Fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, intergalactic grocery lists — whatever project you want to channel with your voice is welcome here.
