Colombo Dockyard celebrated its 38th Anniversary

“an Odyssey of Excellence...”

Colombo Dockyard PLC, Sri Lanka’s premier ship repair and shipbuilding facility celebrated its 38th anniversary on the 1st August 2012. During its long and exciting journey, the shipyard has offered repair assistance close to 9,000 ships and has contracted over 230 new ships for both local and international clientele. This indeed has been a remarkable journey, which started off with a humble beginning to now being recognized as an internationally acclaimed, modern, integrated shipyard. Since its inception way back in 1974, Colombo Dockyard has been on national duty and now is one of Sri Lanka’s largest foreign exchange earners, generating an average annual turnover of over US $130 million, which equals to one percent of Sri Lanka’s total export revenue. In addition to the economic benefit, the socio-cultural benefit it provides to the country is immeasurable, providing employment to over 3000 Sri Lankans and industrial skill training to over 450 trainees (at any given time), and developing the indigenous industry in the country and placing Sri Lanka on the world map of elite shipbuilders and repairers. The growth of business volumes over the years demanded expansion of facilities, which compelled us to set up green field Kelani River Yard (KRY) in close proximity to the main Shipyard, but outside the port premises making it flexible to respond quickly to various dynamics in the market. The secret of success of the Shipyard has been its constant focus on being a step ahead to ensure that every challenge is transformed in to an opportunity. In addition, the Shipyard believes in sustainable development for all our social stakeholders and to create a win-win situation for everyone. Colombo Dockyard has contributed positively to the community, by way of playing a key role as a socially responsible corporate, which has been acknowledged by the industry, ranking the shipyard within the top ten in 2011. The impetus for all the good work performed by the Shipyard is the guardianship of Onomichi Dockyard Company Limited of Japan which has enabled Colombo Dockyard to offer Japanese quality products and service standards, guaranteed delivery times, at highly competitive prices and maintaining its market competitiveness over the past years. With the visionary guidance of Mr. Akihiko Nakauchi, Chairman and dynamic leadership of Mr. Mangala Yapa, MD / CEO, Colombo Dockyard is indeed set to reach newer heights in our continuing odyssey of excellence.

SHIPPING CORPORATION OF INDIA OWNED MT. PALANIMALAI RETURNS BACK TO COLOMBO FOR HER LAY UP REPAIRS

Colombo has been a preferred repair location for Shipping Corporation of India over the past three decades. This leading shipping giant has been patronising Colombo Dockyard for the repair requirements, may it be routine drydocking, major retrofit repair or emergency repairs. MT. Palanimalai (DWT 33,056) chemical tanker returned for her routine drydocking related repairs during July 2012. This vessel has a special relationship with the yard as Colombo was the preferred repair facility when MT. Palanimalai had sustained collision damages during her maiden voyage in 1992 and she was placed for extensive bottom steel renewal repairs on an

emergency basis. Thereafter the series of chemical tankers Palanimalai, Tirumalai and Sabarimala has been regular visitors to Colombo for their routine repair requirements. voluntary movements like NGOs act in the general society, completes the CSR projects, and share the value of the mission among each other. By doing so, the present leadership of Colombo Dockyard has given a new meaning for its business relationships. The relationships been built for the interests of the business is now working for the greater good of the society.

The National Hospital of Sri Lanka NHSL, despite its invaluable service to the health sector of Sri Lanka, as one of the leading training institutions provides training facilities for undergraduates and postgraduate surgical trainees of the Department of Surgery, University of Colombo. The NHSL provides such exclusive training facilities for an average of 50 post graduate students at a time. At present, all trainees have to undergo a mandatory period of 1 year training in General Surgery and this includes training in laparoscopic surgical techniques as well. However, there was no such laboratory training facilities in Sri Lanka except at the facilities available in the College of Surgeons Sri Lanka and Teaching Hospital of Ragama. Therefore, many students of the Department of Surgery, University of Colombo had to go abroad to acquire proper skills in laparoscopic surgery per annum.

R S

Colombo Dockyard understood the need and the scarcity of a proper Laparoscopic Surgical Training Unit for new trainees who are less competent at performing the proper training in the real field.

C

Mr. Mangala Yapa while explaining the CSR approach of the Company and various CSR projects done for the health sector development in Sri Lanka; gave special thanks for its good suppliers who donated for the project in numerous ways.

Colombo Dockyard is the only shipbuilding and ship repair company in Sri Lanka, located in the middle of the Port of Colombo. As an export oriented entity, the Company generated Rs. 12 billion in 2011 with a 94% export income. Ship repair and Shipbuilding is a very challenging industry. The collective approach of the Company in actualizing various CSR project have been very successful.
