Pharmacogenomics (also known as pharmacogenetics) is the study of how our genes affect the way we respond to medications. This study is personalized based on your genes. Pharmacogenomics can help your healthcare provider prescribe a medication that leads to fewer side effects or that may work better for you.
Genes help build the enzymes that metabolize medications. People who don’t respond to medications as expected may have genetic differences that change the amount of enzyme made or how well it works. If your body breaks down a medication too quickly, too slowly, or not at all, then a typical dose of it won’t work as intended. The medication could result in significant side effects, or it may have little to no effect on treating the condition at hand.
We recently began pharmacogenetic testing at Calabasas Pharmacy. We use a cheek swab and then send your sample to a laboratory where a technician checks your DNA for specific changes. Which gene or genes they check depends on which test your provider has ordered, which condition(s) they’re trying to treat, and which medications they’re considering. A test may look at one gene or several genes for specific changes that impact medication breakdown.
We have found that pharmacogenetic testing is very helpful for cardiac medications (cholesterol or blood thinners); psychiatric medications (anxiety, depression, ADD, ADHD); and pain medications.
This test is covered by insurance as long as it is authorized by the physician prescribing the medication in question.

At one of my seminars, I was approached by a woman who wanted me to review a recently created trust she had obtained with the help of a paralegal who was recommended by a “friend” for a “reasonable” price.
The 30-page document left me speechless. It was incomplete, with blank spaces throughout, and the names of the successor trustees were people she didn’t know. Apparently, the paralegal forgot to delete names from the prior client on the template. Most of the terms she wanted were not included, and most of the related documents that should accompany the trust were missing. I explained that most “simple” trusts prepared by a paralegal or CPA and created in a “boilerplate” document don’t consider the unique family situation and specific family needs. The good news is that we caught it in time, and we were able to create a custom plan for her. The new trust was executed and funded with a transfer of her real property interest into the trust name.
Pricing: If the cost of estate planning services seems unusually low, it’s likely too good to be true. Professional services involve costs that reflect the expertise required. Trying to save money on legal documents, including trusts, is not the best practice.
Credentials: Always verify the legal qualifications and background of the person preparing your documents. Ensure they have the appropriate education and license. Consult with at least two professionals.
Reviews: Look for online reviews of the firm or individual. No reviews or a low rating can be red flags.
Procrastination: Many people have good intentions regarding estate planning but often don’t act until they are in a crisis. Knowing that your legal affairs are in place is the best way to protect your family.
Your peace of mind and the security of your family and estate depend on it.

Ben and Brittany Yahalom, along with their daughters, Hayden, age 6, and Ella, age 4, embrace each day with a deep sense of gratitude, guided by their family mantra: “Healthy, happy, lucky, safe.” This mantra is more than just words; it’s a daily reminder, prominently displayed by their front door and stamped on a necklace Brittany made for herself.
“As cliché as it sounds,” explains Brittany, “practicing gratitude lies at the forefront of our lives. If we’re having a bad day, we say these words out loud to remember how blessed our lives really are.”
Brittany grew up in Calabasas and now lives in Woodland Hills. “My parents and siblings also live in the area,” she says, “and I know firsthand what a special place this is for growing families. The schools are wonderful. I love being surrounded by childhood friends who have returned to the area with their kids.”
Ben was born in Israel. The couple first met in 2012 when Brittany participated in a program known as Birthright, which offers young Jewish adults a 10-day heritage trip to Israel. “We dated long distance for more than a year,” Ben shares. “Every few months, we traveled somewhere to meet and spend time together.” It wasn’t long before they realized they were meant to be. To make that dream a reality, Ben followed his heart, moving from Israel to California in 2013 to build a future with Brittany. They tied the knot the following year.
These days, Ben is president of True Classic, a premium men’s apparel company, and calls upon his background in performance marketing and business growth consulting to help the company succeed in its mission, “to make everyone look and feel good.” He also participates in True Classic’s philanthropic ventures, donating clothes to veterans, homeless shelters, schools, and local communities in need. He utilizes his expertise and education, which includes an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, to help companies grow. Living by the adage that education is a lifelong journey, Ben tries to learn something new each day.
Brittany spent many years as a marriage and family therapist before taking a leap of faith to begin a new business during the pandemic shutdown. After continually tossing out jewelry that tarnished too quickly, she created her own line of affordable, high-quality jewelry. The multi-talented mompreneur learned how to make her jewelry pieces by watching online videos. She soon opened Hayden B. Jewelry, a successful online store named after her firstborn daughter.
Brittany continues to give back to the community, donating jewelry to different fundraisers that benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and schools within the local district. She also participates in a yearly food drive in her parents’ community, Bell Canyon, and supports other local charities. As a business owner, Brittany recognizes the importance of supporting local businesses and makes a conscious effort to shop small whenever possible.
Older sister Hayden exercises her athletic side with gymnastics and cheerleading. She and her younger counterpart, Ella, explore their artistic talents during a weekly in-home art class taught by a local instructor and often joined by friends. The sociable girls also enjoy swimming, hosting outdoor dance parties, playing Rummikub, and accompanying their musically inclined dad on the piano.
“Every few months, we traveled somewhere to meet and spend time together.” It wasn’t long before they realized they were meant to be.
When they are not busy with work or giving back to the community, the family enjoys dining at their favorite local eateries in The Commons at Calabasas, often bringing their Labrador retriever, Denver, along. Community events, such as the Halloween and Christmas walks at King Gillette Ranch; family-oriented activities in Bell Canyon, like snow days; Easter egg hunts; and visiting the Calabasas farmers market are also some of their favorite ways to spend time together. For date nights, the couple’s go-to spot is Joey in the Topanga Village.
The Yahaloms enjoy traveling as well. “We love Cabo San Lucas,” notes Brittany. “When we want a relaxing vacation, we try to go somewhere relatively close. You can’t go wrong with the beach, sun, and a few margaritas!” The family has also visited Israel, where Ben’s family resides, and explored such faraway destinations as Thailand, Europe, and Cyprus.
Their favorite times are usually spent closer to home with family and friends. The couple explains, “We’re so fortunate to live in such a beautiful neighborhood, surrounded by likeminded families. It feels like there’s always a friend’s house to visit or someone to meet for coffee. We smile every time we run into familiar faces. It gives us a true sense of community.”
These days, the Yahaloms continue to find joy together. And they always try to keep their mantra top of mind, remembering how grateful they are to live in such a wonderful place. n

When Lamborghini decided to turn the SUV world upside down, they did it in epic fashion and redefined the sports car segment forever. An SUV that is an exotic car or hypercar—would it work? It did, and Lamborghini continues to raise the bar. The most exclusive model in the Urus family, the Urus Performante is the flagship offering, and it is a force to be reckoned with.
The Urus is powered by a 657-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that will get you to 60 in a tick over three seconds and a quarter-mile time of 11.3 seconds. The starting price is just under $245,000, and it can quickly option up to the $300s depending on how much Lambo bling you want to throw at it. And, it is a Lamborghini, so do it all! The Urus Performante is a supercar wrapped in a SUV, and that makes sense because “you can.” It’s the pinnacle of Super SUVs, and if you have to ask why, then this is not the SUV for you. If you want to drive around comfortably in a race car, with your family, as you get groceries...and know that you can walk away from just about everything else on the road...then this is the SUV for you.
“The Urus Performante takes the supreme performance and distinctive looks of Lamborghini’s ground-breaking Super SUV to the next level, retaining its luxurious versatility and delivering the most engaging driving experience, not only on road but in every environment, distinguished through an alluring design that denotes new benchmarks for driving dynamism in what is already a remarkable car,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “The Urus set a new standard at its launch, taking Lamborghini’s design DNA and technological talent and delivering the world’s first Super SUV for a new era. The Urus Performante sets the bar even higher for the SUV segment.”

Porsche enthusiasts were thrilled as Porsche Rusnak/Westlake, located in the Thousand Oaks Auto Mall, revived its popular “No Substitute Saturdays” Cars and Coffee. When it comes to adopting or fostering a pet, it’s often hard to know who really saves whom.
This June, the Eastwood Ranch Foundation (ERF), created in 2012, opened its new animal rescue facility and adoption center in Agoura Hills. ERF founder, actress, and passionate animal rights advocate Alison Eastwood hopes to rescue even more dogs, cats, and other domesticated pets from high-kill shelters in the Calabasas area while raising awareness of their plight.
Alison explains why she chose Agoura Hills as her foundation’s newest facility. “I live in Calabasas and used to ride my horse all over Agoura Hills,” she says, “so I’m very fond of the area. For years, I kept driving by this dirt lot to get to the freeway, and one day, I had the dream to build our rescue facility from scratch on that lot. Now, almost seven years later, that dream has come true.”
It’s clearly the dream of every animal facing a death sentence in a kill shelter to find their new furever home. Alison is dedicated to helping them succeed. Everyone volunteering at the new
and parents to provide invaluable information on how to best care for animals.
Those hoping to make a difference in a loving creature’s life can adopt or temporarily foster. They also need people to transport animals to/from veterinarian appointments and elsewhere. Donations to the nonprofit are always welcome as well. Their next fundraiser is scheduled for the official grand opening of their Agoura Hills location on Saturday, September 7.
The Eastwood Ranch Foundation continues to campaign and petition for abused, neglected, and unwanted animals throughout the United States and beyond. They also support other vetted local rescues, providing funding and temporary care for some of their animals. Those interested in adopting or fostering can view some of ERF’s adorable animals, fill out applications, and learn more about this dynamic organization at eastwoodranch.org. From the moment she could walk and talk, Kaitlyn Dorff has been singing and dancing with her dad, award-winning songwriter and composer and Hall of Fame inductee Steve Dorff, at the piano, filling her childhood home in Calabasas with beautiful harmonies. “Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Kaitlyn reminisces. “I started singing at a really young age, learning all of my dad’s songs and others that we accumulated over the years.” Now, at 24, this local gem is blazing her own trail in the music world.
Her passion doesn’t stop at just music. Kaitlyn’s dance talent blossomed at local performing arts center Dance Dimensions and continued flourishing on the Calabasas High School dance team, instilling in her a deep love for the stage. “Performing is my favorite part of what I do,” Kaitlyn shares. “There’s nothing like the rush of being on stage and connecting with the audience.”
“Soon,” Kaitlyn’s latest single, is a testament to her ability to transform life’s challenges into uplifting music. Written last October while havoc was spreading across the world, Kaitlyn reflects, “There was a lot going on in the world, and I was really
down about it all. I told my collaborators, ‘I need to write a song that is positive and uplifting because I feel the world and I could use some of it.’” The result was an inspiring anthem of hope and resilience that resonates deeply.
Since recently returning to the Los Angeles area after receiving a degree in songwriting from Belmont University in Nashville, Kaitlyn has been laser focused on making her mark on the pop scene. “My whole family came up in the industry in L.A., and I really want to do the same and make them proud,” she says. Blending her Calabasas roots with her experience in Nashville, she’s created a unique sound that’s all her own.
Kaitlyn’s goals are genuine and ardent. “I want to brighten people’s day with my music,” she recounts. “Whether it’s through a heartfelt ballad or an upbeat pop song, I hope to make someone’s world a little better.” So, keep your eyes and ears open—this Calabasas native’s infectious energy and optimistic, emotion-filled songs will undoubtedly make an indelible impact, taking her to the top of the charts.

Say goodbye to the icy platinums and ashy blondes of the cooler months and hello to the sweet, golden hues of honey blonde for the summer. With a deliberate warmth that’s ideal to match the gilded undertones of tanned skin, this deeper blonde that is stealing the season’s spotlight is both flattering and achievable whether you have naturally light locks or darker roots and want to experiment with a brighter hue. Think hair that’s reminiscent of golden sunsets and lazy days of baking in the sun poolside with your girlfriends.
Honey blonde hair gives hints of amber, chestnut, light brown, and a tiny bit of copper. Depending how the light hits, it can reflect any of the different tones, so no matter your complexion, there’s a shade to suit you. And the best part is—it’s super easy to maintain this luminous hue.
Before you head to the salon, let’s explore some options to help you choose the perfect golden nectar-inspired tresses.
Pure honey blonde: If you’re a natural blonde that wants to add dimension to your locks, this warm, inviting hue will brighten blonde strands with a golden tone that doesn’t wash out your complexion or sacrifice richness. Opt for an ammonia-free formula that protects as it colors for radiantly healthy hair.
Buttery honey: This lighter, neutraltoned honey blonde mimics the natural highlights many children get during summer. Characterized by its sun-kissed look without veering artificial, this color gives a softer, more delicate look to natural blonde hair by combining subtle babylights with natural highlights for a brightened overall look—and it doesn’t require all-over bleach.
Honey money piece: This style is the perfect way to experiment with the summery blonde trend without fully committing. It involves sectioning out a one- to two-inch piece of hair that surrounds your face on one or both sides of your part. Make this hair stand out from
with a lighter, brighter honey blonde.
Honey bronde: A great option for brunettes, this technique offers the best of both worlds by blending blonde and honey brown for a flawless lived-in ombre. The low-maintenance bronde (brownblonde) variation avoids more damage than other honey shades, with lighter blonde ends that gradually melt into a warmer brown at the roots.
If you’re starting with a darker base, you may need to lighten your hair before applying color, which typically requires bleach. Those with naturally lighter hair can go straight to coloring. Of course, it is always best to consult with your hair colorist for expert guidance. n
Calabasas Style embraces the multitude of elements that instill a sense of beauty, both inside and out.

A beautiful smile is everything. It has the power to fill others with joy and make you more confident and successful. It’s also one of the first things people notice about you. So, just imagine how powerful your smile can be. As one of only 480 accredited cosmetic dentists in the world, Dr. Bernie Villadiego’s devotion to the art and science of dentistry means you can have a beautiful smile that will last. Unlike other practices that focus on short-term fixes, Dr. Villadiego uses a functional corrective dentistry approach called Biorejuvenation. Biorejuvenation treats the whole chewing system instead of just the parts being affected (long-term). A patient who has undergone this treatment feels better and looks great. But, more importantly, the need for future restorative dental work is far less likely. 23622 Calabasas Rd., #119, Calabasas | 818.341.1345 powerofthesmile.com | @drbernievilladiego

If you think fitness is just for your body, you might want to think again. Facial fitness involves exercising the 43 muscles in your face through various movements and techniques to improve tone, elasticity, and overall appearance.
The origin of facial fitness can be traced back to ancient beauty practices, particularly in Chinese and Japanese cultures. Gua sha and facial acupressure have long been used to enhance circulation and promote skin health. Today, these techniques have evolved into targeted exercises designed to combat aging and rejuvenate the skin.
Just as your body benefits from regular exercise, your facial muscles respond similarly. Movement increases heat and microcirculation, which helps to strengthen the muscles beneath the skin. As these muscles become stronger, the skin appears tighter and more lifted. Working the face muscles also enhances blood flow to the skin, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to skin cells to improve your complexion and create a natural,
healthy glow. Keeping a consistent routine can firm, tone, sculpt, and even slim down your face.
Jawline Sculptor: Tilt your head back slightly, keeping your eyes toward the ceiling. Move your lower jaw up and down as if chewing. Repeat 10 to 15 times to help define your jawline and reduce the appearance of a double chin.
Cheek Lifter: Smile as widely as you can and place your fingers on your cheekbones. Gently lift the skin upwards, hold for a few seconds, and release. Repeat 10 times to maintain cheek plumpness and combat sagging, giving your face a more youthful appearance.
Forehead Smoother: Place both hands on your forehead with fingers spread out. Gently sweep your hands outward, smoothing the skin. Repeat 10 times to help reduce wrinkles and relieve tension.
Eye Firmer: Place your index fingers on the outer corners of your eyes and gently pull the skin towards your temples. Close your eyes tightly, hold for a few seconds, and release. Repeat 10 times to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and lift the eyelids. n

Beauty and the Beast may be just a fairytale, however it’s assumed the “Beast” is male and the “Beauty,” female. What happens when the beast wants to become more beautiful? Fortunately, men today can find a plethora of products, from nail polish to lip gloss, to let their beauty shine.
Makeup is not only being used by more men these days, it’s being created especially for them. After all, the male bird is naturally more colorful than his female counterpart. So, why shouldn’t men follow suit, accentuating their soulful brown eyes or baby blues with a little eye liner or plumping up those kissable lips with a bit of balm? In addition to shaving their beards, men can now shave a few years off their looks with under-eye concealer and find the perfect skincare products to keep their faces glowing.
The new trend towards “soft masculinity” continues to shake up preconceived notions of male and female. It’s no longer taboo for men to use serums, moisturizers, even brow kits to keep those furry hairs in place. Let’s face it—we all want to look our best. The surest way for any sex to keep aging skin in check is by creating a healthy barrier against the elements through cleansing and moisturizing.
The skincare and fashion industries continue to break traditional gender barriers, tailoring new products to men’s changing needs. From floral and pink power suits to dyed hair and smudged eyeliner, they continue to redefine men’s beauty. This urge is really nothing new. After all, men wore makeup in ancient Egypt to denote status and class. Now, they’re simply using fashion and cosmetics to express their beautiful selves. n
For those who skim headlines, here are the facts...
• If you are unhappy with your injection results, don’t wait for them to fade— because they won’t.
• Filler does not last six, nine, or 12 months.
Facial ultrasound reveals that filler can remain in tissue for many years, often over a decade.
• Incorrectly placed filler can migrate from its original location.
the risk? Absolutely, yes!
Eleven years ago, I began handling complicated correction cases, also known as “botched.” Each correction case is an opportunity to transform a mistake into something beautiful and a path to knowing what not to do and how to avoid
complications. Since then, I have helped numerous patients who did not know that their results could be reversed, allowing them to regain confidence and beauty.
Through advancements in technology, such as ultrasound imaging, I am able to provide non-invasive and highly precise methods for dissolving unwanted filler. To learn more, call our office for a consultation. n

This summer is all about redefining beauty with fresh, innovative trends that blend sci-fi vibes with nostalgic charm. Make a statement with your makeup while exploring these contemporary techniques for the ultimate summer glow-up.
doll-like effect.
Summer is the season of glowing skin. Instead of the ever-popular golden hues, this year is all about keeping the skin deeply hydrated and brightly highlighted for a cool-toned, pearlescent glow that requires minimal touchups. Use a lightweight tinted moisturizer and creamy liquid highlighter to lean into the AIinspired, futuristic look. The iridescent shades create an angelic veil to the complexion and, when strategically placed on the high points of the face, attract and reflect light at the perfect angles to provide more definition and dimension.
Channel the timeless beauty and charm of a sweet porcelain doll with a gentle-yet-noticeable rosy tint across the center of your face. Apply a generous amount of pink or peach liquid blush on the apples of your cheeks and under your eyes like a concealer. In a circular motion, blend the blush out and upwards toward your hairline, forming a soft gradient from the undereye area that intensifies as it reaches your cheeks, sculpting your
Bold, over-lined lips are a trend of the past. Try muted, matte lips that have a more undone, diffused vibe with the latest blurred-lips trend. This romantic, soft-lip look can be achieved by applying your favorite neutral lip shade to the center of your lips, then buffing it outwards with your finger. The key is to opt for a matte formula with a powdery finish or set the pigment with a powder to easily mattify and further blur the lip color. The natural-looking result gives you a dreamy, lived-in appearance that lasts all day.
The 90s grunge style is making a comeback in fashion, so its resurgence in beauty is no surprise. A matte smoky eye using deep, dark shades—like black, brown, gray, or even purple— creates the perfect edgy, goth-inspired glam for a sultry summer date night. Enhance the disheveled, lived-in look by smudging the eyeshadow pigment out with your finger and finish it off with mascara on your top and bottom lashes. Grunge makeup is often characterized by a messy and effortless appearance, blending dark, earth-toned liners and shadows to give a rockinspired feel. n

Maintaining smooth, healthy skin on your legs involves more than just a daily cleansing. By adding two critical steps to your skincare routine—exfoliation and toning— you’ll achieve perfectly silky limbs. These processes not only enhance the appearance of the legs but also contribute to their overall health.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface, which prevents ingrown hairs, diminishes dark spots, and enhances skin vibrancy and evenness. It also improves moisturizer absorption, so your lotion can work most effectively.
Choosing an exfoliant: Opt for mechanical exfoliants like sugar or salt scrubs if your skin is thicker and more resilient. Chemical exfoliants containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) are preferable if you have dry or sensitive skin.
Application: Apply mechanical scrubs in a gentle circular motion on damp skin. Typically, a washcloth is best for chemical exfoliants. Always follow a product’s specific instructions.
Frequency: Depending on skin sensitivity, exfoliate one to two times per week. Avoid over exfoliating to prevent dryness and irritation.
Toning might not be the first thing you think of for leg care, but it’s beneficial to incorporate this step. Toning products help restore your skin’s pH balance and can tighten the skin, making the legs appear firmer and more toned.
Choosing a toner: Select hydrating toners without alcohol. Ingredients like witch hazel or rose water are gentle and effective.
Application: Post-exfoliation, apply toner with a cotton pad, gently wiping over the skin to tighten and cleanse residual impurities.
Circulation enhancement: Consider using products or techniques that improve circulation, such as massaging the legs with body oil or using products with caffeine, which can aid in toning the skin. n

Lavender has long been celebrated for its soothing fragrance and therapeutic properties in the realm of natural skincare. Lavendar body balm particularly stands out as a multipurpose skincare essential that offers a plethora of benefits for the skin and senses. Lavender, scientifically known as Lavandula, is an herb native to northern Africa and the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. Best known for its soothing scent, lavender oil is extracted from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily through steam distillation. This essential oil is the heart of lavender body balm, imbuing it with its distinctive, calming aroma and skinnourishing properties.
Moisturizing properties: Lavender body balm is rich in natural fats and oils, so it helps to lock moisture into the skin, making it feel soft and supple. It’s especially beneficial during harsh weather conditions when skin tends to lose moisture more rapidly.
Soothing and calming benefits: Renowned for its natural calming effects, not just on the mind but also on the skin, lavender can soothe common skin irritations, reduce redness, and aid in the healing process of minor burns, cuts, and insect bites.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: Maintain a youthful complexion and prevent signs of aging with lavender as it reduces inflammation and protects the skin from free-radical damage.

Ever wondered why stress seems to show up on your skin like an uninvited guest? It's all related to the fascinating interplay between your mind and skin, which may sound like a whimsical idea but is backed by scientific research. In fact, there’s an entire field that explores the science behind the interconnections of the skin and brain—psychodermatology. That means that taking care of your skin isn't just about the daily products you slather on or getting a monthly facial—it's about holistic well-being.
Achieve radiant skin with a peaceful mind
Sometimes, incorporating a simple daily habit can give the skin and the psyche a much-needed boost.
Mindfulness and meditation: Meditation is known to significantly reduce oxidative stress, bolstering the skin’s resilience and combating aging. Try adding guided meditation into your daily routine, even if you only have five minutes.
Quality sleep: Getting ample sleep—seven to nine hours per night—isn’t always easy, but it is vital for skin repair and rejuvenation. Promote a healthy glow while simultaneously improving your mood and reducing the risk of depression.
Ask the experts: Consult with a naturopathic doctor or a dermatologist familiar with psychodermatology. These professionals combine traditional medicine with alternative therapies like acupuncture and hypnosis to address both the physical and emotional aspects of skin conditions.
Skincare strategies for tense times
When it seems impossible to clear your skin and your mind, it's time to give yourself (and your skincare routine) some extra TLC.
Simplify your routine: Focus on gentle, nourishing products that won't further irritate stressed-out skin. Think soothing cleansers and calming masks with ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile to reduce inflammation and redness.
Hydration is key: Keep your skin saturated with a rich moisturizer and apply barrier-repairing balm to prevent moisture loss, fortify the skin barrier, and shield skin from environmental aggressors.
Pamper yourself: Gua sha tools paired with inflammation-reducing facial oils offer a therapeutic way to unwind. Massage out tension from the jaw, temples, and furrowed brow to melt away stress and increase circulation. n

astor oil’s been given a bad rap. Recently, however, it’s gone from zero to hero in many beauty routines.
This thick and odorless oil distilled from castor plant seeds dates back to Egyptian times, when Cleopatra supposedly used it as a beauty treatment. Much more recently, it’s been used to improve hair and skin and combat all sorts of health issues.
Castor oil contains several moisturizing fatty acids, such as linoleic, ricinoleic, and stearic acid, that improve hydration. It’s also high in nutrient-rich vitamin E, omega-6, and omega-9 and holds healing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Just a tiny amount can help heal dry split ends, tame the frizz, and
keep hair looking lustrous. It even fights dandruff.
Like aloe, castor oil produces a cooling sensation when applied directly on sunburned skin. During cooler months, the oil soothes dry, flaky skin. Its powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties may also help control acne. Just be sure to do a spot test first to make sure you’re not allergic.
A natural system of medicine, Ayurveda is rooted in India. The word itself means knowledge of life, from the Sanskrit ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). In Ayurvedic medicine, castor oil belongs to the rejuvenative, anti-aging class of
herbs known as rasãyana. Its deeply penetrating qualities increase circulation, so practitioners use it in massage oil to relieve inflammation and joint pain. It’s also employed to combat psoriasis and dandruff and heal wounds.
Dab a drop or two of castor oil on your skin to moisturize and heal. It takes time to be absorbed, so you can speed up the process by mixing it with another oil, such as olive. To smooth split ends, warm a quarter-sized drop of castor oil in your hands before applying. Blend it with coconut oil for a restorative hair mask. Leave it on for an hour or overnight to work its magic.
Whether taken internally to assist digestion or applied externally to heal and protect, castor oil is clearly a natural in any health and beauty regimen. n

Sunscreen is your bestie. Even if you’re just running errands, never leave home without a layer of sun protection. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and don’t forget to reapply every two hours. Your future self will thank you for it!
2
Your skin is thirsty. Keep a fresh, dewy complexion by drinking plenty of water and incorporating foods like watermelon and cucumber into your diet. And if you end up sunburnt, rehydrating your skin is top priority. A fragrance-free body lotion with a few simple ingredients is best for moisture, while aloe vera is the gold standard to soothe sore spots.
3
Shine with C. It pays to add a vitamin C serum to your skincare lineup since the powerful antioxidant shields skin from the destructive work of free radicals caused by UV ray exposure. More than that, it brightens the skin, minimizing the appearance of sun-caused hyperpigmentation.
4
Clean face, sweet dreams. No matter how tired you are, ensure your face is spotless before you hit the hay.
By Kaylie Carafelli
5
Shade your strands. Sun rays, saltwater, and chlorine are tough on tresses. Skip hot tools and embrace your natural texture using a leave-in conditioner with UV protection for a carefree summer look. And a healthy scalp enables healthier locks, so spritz your scalp with generous amounts of SPF spray too. If your outfit permits, a wide-brimmed sun hat is the best multipurpose shield to cover your face, eyes, scalp, and hair.
6
Treat your hands and feet. It’s prime time to play with fun, vibrant nail colors. From coral to turquoise, bright-colored nails complement sun-kissed skin impeccably. Don’t neglect your feet—they deserve love too, especially during sandal season. Besides pedicures, exfoliate feet regularly and moisturize daily.
7
Get a faux glow. Avoid the health risks that accompany hours of sun worshipping and still get flawless summer skin from the comfort of your own bathroom with self-tanner. Nontoxic, organic formulations that include plant extracts and oils are key to a sunless, streak-free glow with a generous dose of hydration so you won’t turn orange. n

The power of movement truly cultivates a lasting, natural glow. The key is finding an activity that you enjoy and making it a part of your regular routine. That’s where Pilates comes in.
This low-impact mind and body exercise isn’t just a trend; it offers significant wellness and beauty benefits that go beyond physical. Equal parts stretching, strength, and mind-body connection, Pilates aligns the trifecta that makes us whole. It stretches and strengthens the muscles, supporting the development of a strong core while simultaneously calming the mind and energizing the body. No matter which method of Pilates you explore—from classical mat to contemporary reformer classes—this holistic practice is a comprehensive approach to mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.
The mindful movements and controlled breathing that define Pilates effectively reduce cortisol levels, translating into a sense of calm that can deter stress-induced breakouts and premature aging while positively impacting mental clarity. Focused on strengthening the core, the series of small-but-mighty motions build a solid foundation of inner strength and self-assurance, cultivating the undeniable cornerstone of beauty—confidence. As the core gets stronger, posture noticeably improves so you naturally stand taller, smile wider, and project palpable fortitude.
As with most forms of movement, Pilates promotes better sleep, allowing the body to repair and rejuvenate, which is then reflected in brighter eyes, smoother skin, and an overall refreshed appearance. Regular practice can also significantly boost energy levels, improving circulation for a more efficient cardiovascular system. This contributes to a healthy, radiant complexion, enhanced vitality, and ultimately, an infectious enthusiasm for life.
When consistently incorporated into your regimen, one of the most tangible benefits of this fitness routine is a leaner, more sculpted physique. The full-body workout tones and defines muscles— especially in the core, legs, and arms, and the added strength increases mobility, stability, and flexibility, helping to prevent potential injury. Building lean muscle mass through Pilates also increases metabolism which aids in maintaining a healthy weight.
Finding inner balance is one of the most profound effects of the discipline. Tuning into your body, understanding its needs, and appreciating its capabilities through a persistent Pilates practice brings a heightened awareness that fosters a more positive selfimage and a deeper respect for the body.
So, next time you roll out your mat or hop on the reformer, set an intention to nourish a more beautiful, radiant version of yourself— physically, mentally, and spiritually. n
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are two of the most cherished and celebrated holidays at the club, where members, families, and friends enjoy their “home away from home.” Both holidays featured brunch events an endless buffet in the Calabash Room complete with a kids’ section and endless desert bar. Kids also enjoyed a bounce house, painting activities, and locomotive train rides around the club.
Parents and teachers know that sensory play experiences encourage learning through exploration, curiosity, creativity, and fun. Kids embraced the opportunity to discover what it feels like to be totally immersed in a body-size bubble and celebrated the end of the school year with a refreshing interactive foam party with refreshments and a soft serve ice cream cart that delighted all.
The 2024 Ladies’ Calabash event was held from May 21 through May 23, with 112 female golfers participating in the annual tournament. Calabasas Ladies’ Club President Lisa Malkin chaired and planned the three-day tournament event. This year’s overall gross winners were Sharyn Buck and Dena Levy, and overall net winners were Charo Richards and Marty Valentine.
G roup fitness classes help to keep members motivated throughout the summer months. Weekly classes include spin, body and yoga sculpt, high-intensity interval training, mat Pilates, stretch and flexibility mobility, and cardio boxing. One-on-one and semi-private Motivator sessions for personal training are also available to help members reach their fitness destinations.

Whether you’re looking to build a breathtaking backyard oasis with an infinity-edge pool or design the ideal drought-tolerant landscape for your home or business, Vitoli Landscaping, Hardscaping & Pools in Calabasas is the perfect partner. Focusing on sustainability and eco-friendly materials, CEO Rob Litman offers more than 20 years of experience in construction, landscaping, hardscaping, ecoscaping, and pool and spa design to turn an ordinary yard into an environmentally friendly work of art.
Passionate about landscape design and construction, Litman loves guiding customers from all walks of life through each project’s logistical, environmental, and budgetary challenges to make it an overwhelming success. Sometimes the teacher becomes the student. As fate would have it, a casual joke about Litman’s vision during a routine site visit at the North Ranch residence of one his clients, ophthalmologist Dr. John Davidson, led to a life-changing conversation.
After Dr. Davidson, renowned for his expertise in cataract, lens-replacement, and LASIK surgery, noticed Rob’s struggle to see fine details, Rob explained that he had been legally blind in his right eye since birth due to a severe case of myopia and astigmatism, a condition that lay beyond the reach of traditional corrective methods. Despite seeing numerous eye surgeons over the years, he’d resigned himself to living with a condition that significantly impacted his quality of life. With a track record boasting over 45,000 successful sight-restoring procedures, including implanting over 10,000 Advanced Technology Lenses since May 2005, Dr. Davidson saw otherwise, confident that he could provide a solution.
“Dr. Davidson remains focused on delivering unsurpassed results, working with engineers from leading eye surgery equipment manufacturers to design and test next-generation devices.”
With newfound hope and without hesitation, Rob agreed to a consultation with the ophthalmologist at his NVISION/Miramar Eye Center, during which Dr. Davidson proposed Rob undergo a cutting-edge procedure involving the implantation of an adjustable corrective lens. Ultimately, the results were astounding, causing Rob’s vision and, in turn, overall wellbeing to improve significantly.
“The professionalism of Dr. Davidson and his team at NVISION/Miramar Eye Surgery Center was clear from the start,” says Rob. “The surgery truly marked a turning point in my life. Dr. Davidson and his team executed the procedure flawlessly, correcting my vision to 20/30. For the first time ever, I experienced proper depth perception. Now I can enjoy sports and other activities that were previously challenging. I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Davidson for anyone seeking solutions for cataracts, astigmatisms, or other vision impairments. His seamless blend of skill, experience, and empathy, plus his commitment to innovative techniques and patient care, ensures everyone receives the best treatment possible.”
During his over-30-year career in Ventura County, Dr. Davidson became the first surgeon in the nation to implant PanOptix, the first and only FDA-approved trifocal lens implant, using the NGENUITY 3D Heads-Up Visualization System, and the second surgeon in the world to perform cataract surgery using a head-mounted 3D display system. Earning the trust of his colleagues has given Dr. Davidson the privilege of helping hundreds of medical doctors, eye surgeons, optometrists, and family members to see clearly. As a nationally recognized leader and instructor, Dr. Davidson remains focused on delivering unsurpassed results, working with engineers from leading eye surgery equipment manufacturers to design and test next-generation devices. He was recently awarded as Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation’s “Vision Care Specialist of the Year” for 2024. Rob continues to provide quality craftsmanship at Vitoli Builders. He notes, “We are all moving parts of one welloiled machine and strongly believe in excelling in every step of the project from planning to construction. Our main priority is to care for each client before, during, and after construction.” Whether they’re constructing elegant stone masonry, building a tasteful outdoor kitchen, or installing a solar pool-heating system and performing low-impact development calculations for rain harvesting, Rob and his team always have clear vision, keeping an eye towards a more sustainable future. n

Walls are the blank canvas of a room, just waiting to be brought to life. The right wall coverings can transform a space, adding depth, character, and style. From the timeless elegance of
Chinoiserie to the tactile luxury of upholstered walls, there are countless ways to make your walls an integral part of your home’s design. Here are some unique wall-covering options to consider:
Paint is perhaps the most straightforward and adaptable wall covering. It offers limitless color choices, allowing homeowners to create anything from a calm, serene environment to a bold, vibrant space. Techniques like color blocking, ombre, and stenciling can add creative flair to painted walls. From matte emulsions to high-gloss finishes, each brings its own unique sheen, texture, and appearance. Moreover, paint can easily be updated to reflect changing tastes or seasonal trends, making it a perennial favorite for those looking to refresh their interiors.
Plaster: Old-world charm
Plaster walls create a sense of history and permanence. This old-world technique, used in everything from ancient Roman villas to Renaissance palaces, adds a layer of texture and depth that paint alone cannot achieve. Plaster can be smooth or textured, tinted in various hues, or left in its natural state. Venetian plaster, in particular, is known for its lustrous finish that mimics the look of polished marble. Plaster walls are durable and can be customized to fit both contemporary and traditional interiors, making them a great choice for any home. One of my favorite techniques is cross trowel. Instead of troweling vertically, you trowel horizontally, creating an even flatter, more-refined finish.
Fresco: Timeless artistry
Frescoes are wall paintings created on freshly laid plaster, allowing the paint to become an integral part of the wall surface. This ancient technique, used famously in the Sistine Chapel, brings an element of timeless artistry to any home. Frescoes can depict anything from classical scenes to abstract designs, with a unique and permanent piece of art on your walls. While commissioning a fresco can be pricey, the result is a truly one-of-a-kind feature that can become the focal point of any room.
Wallpaper is a versatile option that offers an endless variety of patterns, textures, and colors. From bold, modern designs to subtle, classic patterns, wallpaper can suit every taste and style. Modern advancements have made wallpaper easier to apply and remove, making it a practical choice for those who like to change their décor regularly. Textured wallpaper can add a tactile dimension to a room, while patterns can create visual interest and depth. Whether you go for a feature wall or cover an entire room, wallpaper can significantly change the ambiance of a space.
Chinoiserie is a European artistic style that reflects Chinese influence. This decorative art became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and is characterized by intricate and elaborate designs featuring pagodas, florals, birds, and mythical creatures. Using Chinoiserie wallpaper or murals can bring an air of sophistication and worldly charm to a room. The rich colors and detailed patterns create a visually arresting backdrop, perfect for living rooms, dining areas, or even bedrooms that aim for a luxurious and exotic aesthetic.
Upholstered walls: Softness and luxury
Upholstered walls are the epitome of luxury and comfort. They provide a unique, soft texture that enhances the acoustics and warmth of a room. This type of wall covering is often seen in high-end hotels and theaters but can be adapted for residential spaces to create a cozy, opulent atmosphere. Upholstered walls are especially suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, and home theaters, where a sense of intimacy and comfort is desired. The fabric choices are vast, ranging from plush velvets to refined silks, each offering different tactile and visual effects.
Wall coverings are an important element in interior design, offering endless possibilities for you to express your personal style and enhance the ambiance of a home. Whether you prefer the exotic allure of Chinoiserie, the versatility of wallpaper, the historic charm of plaster, the simplicity of paint, the luxury of upholstered walls, the timeless artistry of frescoes, or the personal touch of murals, there is a perfect wall covering to enliven your home’s walls. n

Jim Stime vividly remembers the first time he walked into Pasadena Tropical Fish in 1982. It was love at first sight. Just inside the front door was a simple aquarium housing a yellow tang and a blue tang. Catching a glimpse of the intense, brilliant, yellow-and-rich-plastic-blue colors, “I was immediately hooked into the magnificent beauty of saltwater aquariums,” Stime recalls.
Fast-forward 40 years and Jim’s passion is now a successful earning him a reputation as the area’s most educated and respected expert on saltwater fish aquariums and living coral reefs. He first started fueling his aquatic interest by working in tropical fish shops. Then, he worked for an aquarium products manufacturer. After returning to a local Thousand Oaks tropical fish shop, he spent his efforts providing aquarium services, eventually going into business himself. During his career, Stime hosted a national aquarium conference, built websites selling aquariums, designed and patented a tank specific to jellyfish, and produced a YouTube video series—all while continuing to set up and service aquariums in homes and businesses throughout the community.
collectively view the inhabitants of a fish-only system is common, but with a living coral reef, “you get up close to the tank, observing the individual inhabitants and giving the feeling of being immersed in the entire aquatic system,” Stime shares with a broad smile.
“It’s been an interesting, educational, and comfortable career that all stemmed from my hobby, and I’m a lucky guy to be involved in it,” Stime shares. Now at the pinnacle of his career, he relishes the privilege of designing unique, stylish aquariums for his upscale clientele—accommodating every custom shape and dimension to enhance each home’s beauty.
“While some affluent homeowners invest in paintings and statues, my clients consider their aquariums to be a form of ‘living art,’ where I get to be the Vincent Van Gogh by designing, installing, and maintaining living and breathing home aquariums that they can enjoy for years to come,” Stime says.
The initial inquiry he encounters with potential clients is about the difference between a “fish only” and “living coral reef” system. Stime explains that a fish-only system is a collection of colorful fish with decorations, like a rock foundation, calcareous gravel, and sterile, bleach-cleaned coral skeletons.
The more exciting and far more stable alternative is a living coral reef system. Corals are living creatures consisting of a fleshy covered skeleton that, through the process of photosynthesis, deposit calcium to build up their skeletal framework and grow upwards towards the light. With the advent of LED lights, the corals fluoresce with vivid or pastel colors. Similar to plants, corals can start off as fragments of their larger organism, eventually growing into large corals.
The visual experience of a living coral reef tank sets it apart from a fish-only system as the entire aquarium is alive. Standing back to
As technology advances, so does the way Stime maintains his custom-designed aquariums, which now include computer systems to monitor and control all aspects of aquaria. “The keen insight and statistics from the computer ultimately provide the key to success—stability,” Stime explains. And it can all be accessed from his smartphone with minute-by-minute notifications to control temperature and water parameters or track equipment issues.
Materials have also changed the aquarium industry. A departure from the traditional, square-bodied glass tanks, most of Stime’s custom builds are now constructed of acrylic, offering a wide range of unique shapes, from cylindrical to bowed fronts and wide-radius bent or curved corners. Since acrylic is clearer and lighter than glass, 8- to 12-foot-long tanks are easily achievable, as well as dramatic 4-, 6-, and 8-foot-tall tanks.
As the owner of Aquarium Design, Stime is at the helm of all the day-to-day responsibilities. “It is and always has been just me. I’m the one who cleans the tank; I provide the fish, the coral, the food, and all the maintenance supplies. When there is an emergency, it is me who answers the phone. I’m a one-man army, your one-stop shop,” reveals Stime, “I ensure my clients’ only jobs are to feed the fish and enjoy the show.”
With four decades of experience in sourcing the best vendors and products to build and maintain his stunning designs, “L.A.’s Fish Guy” doesn’t mind the nicknames it’s earned him. He considers his work “living art,” making him the aquatic Vincent Van Gogh 805.241.7140 | Aquarium—Design.info | YouTube @lafishguy n

at home, we help shape our children’s understanding of beauty to encompass features beyond the superficial. We can embrace true beauty by incorporating these insightful tips into day-to-day habits.
Engage kids in conversations about people's personalities, skills, interests, and outlooks on life. Highlighting other valuable attributes helps them understand that a person's worth isn't solely based on how they look. For example, one might say, "I really admire how kind and helpful your friend is," rather than commenting on body type or facial features.
Encourage children by saying things like "you have a natural beauty that shines through" or "makeup can be fun to use, but it's your smile and confidence that truly make you stand out." Affirmations like this influence how children perceive themselves, helping them recognize their intrinsic value and realize that beauty is something that comes from within.
Many of us are guilty of the occasional self-critical comment like "these jeans make me look fat.” Our children don’t just observe our actions—they pick up on our attitudes and behaviors, especially when we’re unaware. So, it’s important to be intentional when talking about appearances and bodies. We can demonstrate confidence and self-respect by praising our favorite personality traits next time we look in the mirror.
When giving a compliment, shift the focus from the person’s body to an item and their personal style, reinforcing that worth is not tied to appearance. For example, say "what a beautiful sweater" instead of "you look great in that sweater."
Remember, authenticity is the top priority when praising children— affirm strengths and confidence without going overboard. Embodying a balanced self-view is the key to unlocking the true magic of beauty. n

Red wine is more than just a beverage; it’s a journey through history, culture, and geography, encapsulating the essence of the places where its grapes are grown and the traditions of its makers. From the robust and complex cabernet sauvignon to the delicate and aromatic pinot noir, red wines offer a diverse palette of flavors, aromas, and experiences. To get better acquainted, let’s explore the significant varieties of red wine, highlight some key wine-producing regions, and delve into what makes each type unique.
Known as the “king of red wines,” cabernet sauvignon is famed for its depth and longevity. Originating from the Bordeaux region of France, this wine is now produced worldwide. It is full-bodied with high tannins and a palate that boasts flavors of black cherry, blackcurrant, and cedar. As it ages, it develops hints of tobacco, graphite, and leather, making it a favorite among collectors.
Merlot
Merlot serves as a smoother, softer alternative to cabernet sauvignon but is often blended with it to add body and softness. This wine is both easy to drink and complex enough to be interesting, featuring plush tannins, flavors of black cherry and plum, and herbal notes. It’s particularly prominent in Bordeaux but has also found a successful home here in California and in Washington.
Pinot noir is the quintessential grape of Burgundy, France, but has also been successful in California, Oregon, and New Zealand. It’s known for its lighter body and softer tannins, with a flavor profile that includes raspberry, cherry, and clove. What makes pinot noir unique is its transparency in expressing its terroir—it’s highly sensitive to where it’s grown, changing subtly with the shifts in soil, climate, and topography.
Known as syrah in Europe and shiraz in Australia, this grape produces bold, spicy wines that can range from medium to full-bodied. Syrah is prominent in the Rhône Valley of France where it produces dark, intense wines with flavors of blackberry, mint, and black pepper. In Australia, shiraz becomes juicier and more
Paso Robles, USA: Excelling in varieties like zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, and Rhone-style wines such as syrah.
Tasting red wine involves observing its color, swirling it to release aromas, sniffing it to identify scents, and finally tasting it to discern flavors. The ideal serving temperature varies: Lighter wines like pinot noir are best at slightly cooler temperatures (around 55°F), while fuller-bodied wines like cabernet sauvignon and shiraz thrive at slightly warmer temperatures (about 65°F).
Red wines offer a tapestry of flavors and styles, influenced by the type of grape, climate, soil, and human touch. Whether you are a novice or a connoisseur, exploring red wines can be a rewarding adventure into the world of viticulture and vinification. Each glass tells a story of its origin and offers a taste of its homeland, inviting wine lovers to explore and enjoy. n

One of the most anticipated events at the 30th anniversary celebration of Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food, and Brew Festival was the annual Yummie Culinary Competition. Each year, more than 30 local chefs showcase their talent by crafting a unique dish to compete for the best of two categories: savory and sweet. Dishes are judged on flavor, presentation, innovation, and quality.
This year’s judging panel featured the critiques of Chef Adam Hart, culinary arts instructor and sommelier at Oxnard College; Chef Eric Kopelow, vice president of Cedar Lanes Natural Foods; food critic and blogger Lisa McKinnon; restaurant critic and wine educator Amy Madsen; private Executive Chef Gunnar Planter; Abdu Romero, executive chef at Birnam Wood Golf Club; Chef Masa Shimakawa of Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows; and Executive Chef Rachel Weiner of Ojai Valley Inn. Ms. Alynette, host of the popular All Things 805 radio show on Q95.9, served as the competition’s emcee.
In the savory category, Chef Alex Montoya of Water’s Edge Restaurant and Bar reigned supreme for the third consecutive year, crowned by the judges as the first-place winner for his short rib birria on lobster Oaxaca cheese arancini with pickled red onion pearls. Chef Damien Giliberti of Ox & Ocean received second place for his flavorful slow-braised American Wagyu shank with grain polenta, stewed carrots, and charred cipollini onions in a red wine reduction. Taking home third place was Chef Alvaro Cardona of Limon y Sal who served his taco with tropical pico de gallo, fresh pineapple, cilantro, tomato, and lemon.
Chef Martin Ledesemna of El Encanto nabbed the coveted firstplace award in the sweet category for his lush pannchamoya cotta with honey-orange flavor. Camarillo Cupcake’s Gina Stymacher was awarded second place for her imaginative jalapeno-infused lemon bar with Chile-lime seasoning and candied jalapenos. Julia San Bartolome, founder of Sweet Arleen’s, was the competition’s third-place winner with her tequila-lime mousse featuring a Frito chip crust, Grand Marnier whipped cream, and chamoy strawberries.
All winners received special awards and recognition on the festival’s main stage. n
