Malgosia Migdal Design, highly recognized as one of the top national design firms for over 25 years, established their roots in the Golden Triangle of Beverly Hills. In order to better connect with the community that Malgosia calls home, the team decided to open a second office in the iconic beach city of Malibu, CA.
After a few years, MMD found a beautiful, quaint property with an original schoolhouse structure in Point Dume which is proudly known as “House of Malibu, HOM”. With the open office space plan and large glass doors showcasing the areas inviting native plants and wildlife, their new headquarters encapsulates the firm’s lifestyle and general relaxed sophistication aesthetic. The indoor to outdoor flow seamlessly ties nature into their newly reimagined offices, creating a cozy environment nestled in the beachside hills of Malibu.
Featured here is a favored project recently completed by MMD. The property is located in the renowned Malibu Bluffs filled with some of the most luxurious homes and picturesque views in Malibu. The villa that once set a scene of moody, old world design underwent a complete interior renovation and was modernized with a Malibu flare. With warm, earthly tones and textures, natural wood cabinetry, luxury decorative light fixtures, extra large kitchen island, a mix of vintage and modern curated furniture and accessories, movie theater with an guest suite above, separate guest house, private tennis court, and a refinished pool area and newly landscaped outdoor living space with a full outdoor kitchen, this massive property has many moments to host guests while they enjoy a sweeping and enchanting view of the Pacific Ocean.
Celebrate Safely and Arrive in Style!
With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start planning that special event! Whether it be a holiday work party, family gathering or milestone soiree, transportation can be one of the first things to check off your list. A wonderful autumn outing can include a fun filled day at a local pumpkin patch or Halloween themed amusement park to one of the local stadiums for a little tailgating and football fanfare. For the more sophisticated palette, a wine tour to Malibu, Santa Barbara, Temecula, Santa Ynez or Paso Robles will delight the senses amidst a backdrop of fall colors painted into the landscape. When concerned about the weather, large groups for corporate or personal events will love a trip to Top Golf, Dave & Busters, Two Bit Circus, Lucky Strike Bowling, or the Hollywood Wax Musuem. With the Getty, Griffith Observatory, The Broad, Hammer Musuem, Huntington Botanical Gardens, MOCA and LACMA all within the Greater Los Angeles area, it’s time to turn your next event from ordinary to extraordinary!
Now that your destination is set, why not start the adventure in a elegant limousine or state of the art Party Bus? Small family and friend groups can share the comfort of a luxurious limousine or Mercedes Party Bus while enjoying the extra time together instead of battling the traffic of Los Angeles. Have more friends to make you Merry? Party Buses equipped with Karaoke, Dance Poles, Disco Lights and Rockin’ Beats turn your get together into a Night Club on Wheels! When considering safety for a large corporate event, let a professional and experienced driver handle the transportation in a large Party Coach, while your employees relax, celebrate and participate in some team building. Nothing will make your guests feel like Kings and Queens for a day like having a personal chauffeur and fun mode of transportation to make memories that will last a lifetime!
As we dive into the planning of each issue, our goal remains unwavering: to create a magazine that not only serves Malibu but also captures the very essence of what makes our community special. We are committed to featuring topics that are both important and essential, reflecting the unique spirit that defines our coastal haven.
As summer fades into memory and we move towards autumn, we find ourselves yearning for the cozy warmth that the season brings. But here in Malibu, our connection to the beach remains steadfast—it’s our daily ritual, our grounding force. While some may see our lifestyle as an endless summer, for us, it’s simply home. And with that comes the responsibility to protect it, to cherish it, and to celebrate what makes Malibu so exceptional.
This is our Entertainment issue, and what better way to honor it than by celebrating Malibu’s most cherished entertainer—Dick Van Dyke. A national treasure and a beloved figure in our community, Dick’s impact on the world of entertainment is immeasurable, but his contributions to Malibu are equally profound. From his legendary community Halloween events to his and Arlene’s enduring support for local arts and youth initiatives, the Van Dykes have given so much to our town. Now, it’s our turn to give back. The renaming of the theater at Malibu High School to The Arlene and Dick Van Dyke Theater is a heartfelt tribute from a grateful community to a couple who have done so much to enrich our lives.
This issue also brings you a glimpse into the home of another iconic figure—Tom Petty. Perched above the Pacific Coast Highway, his Malibu sanctuary is now seeking its next chapter. This was more than just a house; it was a haven where Tom could escape the spotlight and find peace. Dana Petty shared how this sprawling land offered him solace, a place where he could connect with nature and let his creativity flow freely. Now, as this home looks for its next owner, it carries with it the legacy of a rock legend whose music has touched millions.
We also had the privilege of sitting down with one of Malibu’s most beloved realtors, Ani Dermenjian. For over three decades, Ani has been a cornerstone of the Malibu real estate scene, shaping the community with her dedication, professionalism, and passion. As she celebrates this milestone, Ani reflects on the journey that brought her here and the vibrant community she has helped build over the years.
At Malibu Magazine, we are honored to showcase our city in a way that makes us all proud. Malibu is not just a place—it’s a lifestyle, a mindset, a community that we are privileged to be a part of.
As we move forward, let us continue to embrace the beauty, talent, and spirit that make Malibu so extraordinary.
Thank you for reading, and for being a part of this journey with us.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Derek Schimming
Derek Schimming was a devoted husband, a proud father of four daughters, and a loyal friend. Passionate about art, he dedicated his time and energy to the Malibu Art Association. Derek cherished Malibu and its residents, welcoming newcomers with warmth and kindness. He loved surfing, laughing, and sharing moments with his loved ones. On June 15, friends and family gathered to celebrate Derek’s life after he tragically passed away from a heart attack and subsequent car crash near Paradise Cove on May 14. Tracy Park, a friend and local gallery owner, expressed the community’s shock and sorrow, highlighting Derek’s unique and irreplaceable presence.
The celebration began at Zuma Beach with a paddle out, offering a moment of solace and connection to the ocean Derek adored. Later, at MaliBUngalows, the community shared humorous and heartfelt stories, finding comfort in his vibrant spirit. Surrounded by Derek’s stunning artworks, attendees felt his positive energy and took strength from his happy, giving life.
Danita, Derek’s widow, reminisced about his generous heart and his deep love for people. Influenced by his father’s architectural work and his mother’s art gallery, Derek’s abstract expressionist pieces reflected his lifelong passion for art. His works will be featured at the Malibu Art Gallery at City Hall in the upcoming exhibition season. The gathering concluded with a performance of “I’ve Got Love Like a River,” a song meaningful to Derek and his Surf Therapy Program colleagues. Derek believed art and the ocean should be accessible to everyone, including those with special needs. Tributes on social media reflected the love and respect Derek inspired. Comments such as “May Derek rest in great natural peace and power” and “Derek mastered all the good traits anyone can have” beautifully encapsulate his legacy.
Malibu High School Celebrates Class of 2024
On Tuesday, June 11, 102 Malibu High School students walked across the athletic field one last time to receive their 2024 diplomas. The ceremony began with performances and speeches by members of the Class of 2024. To start, the late Leah Isaacs was honored by graduating senior Thomas Drummond. “Leah was truly a joy to be around, with her contagious laughter and her silly sayings,” Drummond said. “From laughing with her to crying without her, I never expected to see myself and my classmates graduate without her. She always had a smile on her face. She touched so many people’s hearts and was incredibly welcoming to everyone around her.”
On June 5, 2023, 16-year-old Leah passed away, just days before the previous year’s graduation. While Leah would have graduated this year with her classmates, her friends acknowledged her absence and honored her presence. “Today is a celebration of her graduating class. Her presence lives on through our class and everyone who remembers her legacy. Her dancing spirit will live on forever,” Drummond added. Micah Fong, Cecilia Casas, Katie Dahm, Makenna Samsel, and Felix De Raspide Ross delivered inspiring speeches.
Malibu High School Principal Patrick Miller then presented the Class of 2024. “Leadership is about making the right choice at the right time, doing so will inspire others to follow you,” Miller said. The students lined up to accept their diplomas. Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board members, including Board President Jennifer Smith and Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton, were in attendance. After receiving their diplomas, Miller asked the graduates to stand and move their tassels, completing the commencement. “It is my distinct honor to present to you the graduates of Malibu High School Class of 2024!” Miller shouted.
Malibu Little League’s Festive Finale Parade
Cloudy skies and a slight drizzle couldn’t dampen the festive spirit of the Malibu Little League’s final day. The event featured a parade, awards, recognitions, championship baseball, and countless smiles on the faces of young baseball and softball players and their parents. The day kicked off with a parade from Malibu Village to Our Lady of Malibu. Vehicles were transformed into colorful floats for the mile-long journey. A jeep adorned with pink sticky notes and balloons celebrated the Barbies softball team. A truck sported a Dodgers banner with blue tassels on the hood and bumper, covered in baseball stickers. Another truck proudly displayed a banner for the Fire Ants softball team on its front bumper.
After the parade, T-ball, softball, and baseball teams circled the infield of the park’s baseball fields. League and Malibu city officials distributed awards, recognitions, and team trophies. Team members dashed across the diamond to collect their boxes of trophies, then returned to their spots on the infield, all while music blared from speakers. Malibu Little League President John Alfano reflected on the season’s success, noting that despite several early spring games being canceled due to rain, the season was outstanding.
“The talent this season was awesome,” Alfano remarked. “The kids really progressed.” The closing day encapsulated the joy and camaraderie of the season, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a sense of accomplishment. The slight drizzle only added to the charm of a day filled with community spirit and celebration.
Malibu Launches ‘Cruise Malibu’ Campaign
“Cruise Malibu campaign is more than just a slogan; it’s a movement,” Deputy City Manager Alexis Brown said, kicking off the event. “It’s a call to action for everyone to adopt a safer, more mindful driving approach on Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu’s main street. As we cruise through tonight’s presentation, we are reminded to slow down, enjoy the stunning scenery, and contribute to the safety and tranquility of our coastal paradise.”
On June 27, community members, Malibu leaders, law enforcement, and partner agencies gathered at Malibu Bluffs Park to launch the city’s Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) safety campaign, “Cruise Malibu—Surf, Sand, Slow.” Designed by a focus group of residents, Pepperdine students, the LA County Sheriff’s Department, CHP, and city staff, the campaign promotes a culture of mindful driving.
The event featured a Q&A with residents, law enforcement, and Pepperdine representatives, debuting a PCH safety music video and TV commercial. Attendees were encouraged to pledge to “cruise PCH at or below the speed limit in Malibu” and received campaign gifts.
Colin Drummond, a campaign creator, emphasized changing driving culture in Malibu, comparing it to the anti-smoking movement. LASD Sgt. Soderlund and LASD Sgt. James Arens discussed the collaborative efforts and importance of community involvement in setting a safer pace on PCH. Award-winning producer Robin Cecola shared the story behind the campaign’s theme song, “PCH SLOW DOWN!”—a re-recording of “Lake Shore Drive” with custom lyrics for the campaign. City Manager Steve McClary thanked everyone involved and noted the recent passing of SB 1297, allowing speed camera systems in Malibu. The city also has a pledge wall at City Hall, encouraging residents to sign and raise awareness about safe driving practices.
Malibu celebrates the Fourth of July on Point Dume
The Point Dume community celebrated its 23rd annual Fourth of July parade with great enthusiasm. Residents lined the parade route, sitting in beach chairs, chatting with neighbors, and eagerly awaiting the decorated vehicles. Vonnie Street, a longtime attendee and former local teacher, shared her excitement, saying, “We always enjoy our parade.”
Led by Ladder 71 from Malibu’s fire station, the parade showcased a variety of vehicles, from golf carts and bikes to scooters, cars, and even a backhoe. Participants enthusiastically waved flags and shouted, “Happy 4th of July!” Sean Colbrie, balancing on his tall bike built 12 years ago, was a crowd favorite. Sam and Yvonne Boyer’s boat-themed float, with their children Summer and Aurora, delighted onlookers. Coach Derek Saenz and the Malibu club volleyball team, fresh off a national tournament, joined the parade, along with Congressman Brad Sherman, who declared, “This is America! This is tremendous!” Suzanne Guldimann likened the event to “our Lake Wobegon,” emphasizing its community spirit.
Children darted through the crowd, while dogs in patriotic outfits enjoyed the attention. Mister, a 15-year-old quarterhorse, and his owner, Larry Gray, were a hit with the kids. Future writer Stash Wolski, 12, reflected on the significance of America and the parade. Coordinator Alicia Peak and volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly, with contributions from sponsors and local organizations. The celebration concluded with a carnival featuring games like sack races, musical chairs, and fishing, epitomizing good old-fashioned American fun.

Will Rogers State Park celebrates 80 years with Sips & Saddles
On June 8, Will Rogers State Historic Park celebrated its 80th anniversary. Located near Malibu, this urban oasis offers a retreat for hikers, picnickers, history enthusiasts, and polo fans. The ranch house, stables, and grounds added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, stand as a testament to its historical significance. To honor the park and support the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation and Will Rogers Polo Club, the Sips and Saddles Rosé wine tasting and Tournament of Rosé Polo Match were held, attracting 600 attendees.
Elegantly dressed guests enjoyed watching three polo matches while sipping wine. Event manager Kathy Knoll noted the event catered to wine lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and the community. Local restaurants, including favorites from Pacific Palisades and Gladstones Malibu, provided culinary delights, and over 30 wineries showcased their finest rosé wines.
Attendees like Carolyn Prater and Sarah Javaheri were delighted with the inaugural event, praising its ambiance and people-watching opportunities. Bill Hamm, the park’s educator and historian, highlighted the park’s mission to preserve the property as it was during the Rogers family’s residence. The park features a polo field, picnic areas, and a 2.2-mile hiking trail, along with the historic Will Rogers house, open for free tours from Thursday to Sunday. Hamm emphasized Will Rogers’ philanthropy and kindness, reflecting his Cherokee philosophy of sharing. Upcoming events include a celebration honoring veterans and Betty Rogers on August 11.

“What is your ‘go to’ place for nightlife and weekend entertainment in Malibu?”

Walking Broad Beach at night in Malibu is my favorite way to unwind. There’s something magical about the moonlit sky and the soothing sound of the sea. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the day, set intentions for the future, and just feel grateful. The peacefulness of the beach at night makes it easy to appreciate life’s simple, beautiful moments.

Loving Malibu nightlife at Dreamland Aviator Nation. I have to say that I’ve been working in real estate for the last 26 years here and have experienced a lot of nightlife in Malibu. Let’s go down memory lane. There is such a rich history here, and it’s good to bring those special moments back to life. Malibu is a small community but filled with a lot of great talent, musicians, and people that just wanted to have a sense of community on a fun and great level. A variety of people of differing backgrounds would mingle around, and gab with neighbors at such places as Guido’s, The Dume Room, Thai Dishes, Beaurivage, Geoffreys, or Granita while enjoying their favorite cocktails or having some great bites. These places provided an intimate setting where you could socialize, laugh, catch up on the local news that was only had by talking, no cellphones. There were other places where you could sing
karaoke and dance to a great DJ, such as The Barrel, Sunset restaurant and Cafe Habana. The locals and celebrities would come out and not have to even think of paparazzi. We were all like ohana (a Hawaiian word for family). We would reminisce about places like Bambu, La Scala, Tra Di Noi, and Borderline. I have to say that those were the days! I’m an advocate for the use of Uber and Lyft because there is much more traffic in Malibu, and safety is paramount.
Nowadays, there is Dreamland, V’s, Ollo, Bui Sushi, Duke’s, Zinqué, Geoffrey’s, Malibu Brewery, Kristy’s, Rafi Lounge, Soho house, Nobu, Sunset, Rosenthal’s and the Vintage market summer series. Everything shuts down at 10 p.m. Support our local businesses because they surely appreciate it. The Bu is a fun place and a community with a rich history of people and places.

My favorite nightlife in Malibu is the Friday night concert at Trancas, where the locals hang out. It’s quintessentially Malibu. Simply put, it’s the coolest spot in town to gather up and enjoy summer weekends. I love to meet up with my neighbors to talk about surfing, enjoy the music scene, and celebrate all Malibu has to offer with good friends. These concerts really make Trancas come alive. Many of us remember the old How’s Market, which had its own charm. Now we have Vintage Grocers, where you can grab gourmet delicacies to picnic or eat at the restaurants in the courtyard. I love Kristy’s for fine dining or The Malibu Brewing Company, which has great comfort food, friendly service, and a nice vibe to enjoy a balmy summer night. I recommend the fish tacos! Their desserts are richly decadent.
I often like to stop into the new Malibu Music store. Some of the world’s greatest rock stars have lived here over the years, and until now, we haven’t had a music store with high quality instruments. They have many vintage guitars with an assortment of mandolins. I enjoy getting to play music with friends at their Saturday night jams which also brings the community together.

After spending the day soaking up the sun and enjoying water activities at one of our favorite beaches in Malibu, my daughter and I always enjoy Zinque’ Restaurant. We appreciate the vibrant and trendy ambiance, which provides us with a chic and relaxed atmosphere. We always enjoy the culinary experience offered at Zinque’ where we indulge in the diverse menu featuring fresh and flavorful dishes. From small plates perfect for sharing to signature entrées prepared with locally sourced ingredients sure to delight every palate. The proximity of the restaurant to the beaches enhances our overall experience and allows us to make the most of our mother daughter time in this picturesque coastal town we have called home for almost 30 years!
By combining these elements of ambiance, culinary experience and location, we find Zinque’ in Malibu to be the perfect nightlife spot following a day of exploring our beloved beaches.

One of my favorite activities is setting up my easel in my Malibu garden. Every plant was chosen and nurtured by me, including the special cultivar roses. The color schemes of the garden were designed as inspiration for my art.
As the garden has grown and matured, it has orchestrated its own harmonious arrangements. It’s as though I’m collaborating with God in the creation of beauty. Surrounded by fragrant flowers, listening to the birds, and painting canvases, I find joy.
Emily Shane Foundation is California Nonprofit of the Year
Founders Ellen and Michel Shane recognized for foundation’s transformative tutoring and mentorship programs
By Barbara Burke
Empowering students to thrive.” That is the goal—and impressively, the achievement— of Malibu’s Emily Shane Foundation, an accomplishment recognized by California State Senator Ben Allen, who has named the foundation as a California Nonprofit of the Year at a celebratory luncheon at the state capitol on California Nonprofits Day, June 5. The prestigious honor acknowledges the foundation’s empowering underserved middle school students through personalized academic tutoring and mentorship.
“I served on the school board when we tragically lost Emily Shane 14 years ago on Pacific Coast Highway,” Allen stated.“That Ellen and Michel have been able to turn that unthinkable loss into such a powerful force for good is commendable and inspiring. The data is clear: students served by the foundation’s individualized tutoring and mentorship programs are more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college and less likely to miss school or turn to illegal substance use. I am pleased to honor Emily’s legacy by recognizing this life-changing work.”
The CalNonprofit of the Year initiative, now in its ninth year, allows each California state legislator to honor a nonprofit organization doing outstanding work in their district. The foundation is one of more than 100 other honorees recognized by state senators and assembly members for their exceptional contributions to their communities. CalNonprofits, the leading policy voice for California’s nonprofit sector, sponsors the program in partnership with the state senate and Assembly Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector.
“It is our hope that this recognition will amplify our mission and garner the support needed to continue Emily’s legacy,” Ellen Shane, director of the foundation, said. “Every child deserves the chance to succeed in middle school and beyond. May this honor be a stimulus to ensure a positive future for those we serve.” To learn more about the Emily Shane Foundation and its impressively impactful work, which strives to achieve educational equity and student success, go to emilyshane.org.
Malibu Rallies for Pacific Coast Highway Safety
‘STFD’ Free T-Shirt campaign highlights urgent need for speed cameras on Pacific Coast Highway
By Samantha Bravo
In May, Malibu residents gathered to receive free white T-shirts designed by Blaze Pearson and Alyssa Crosby, featuring the message “Give Us Speed Cameras! For a Safe PCH” as part of the Pacific Coast Highway Safety Awareness campaign. Gallery owner Tracy Park hosted the event at her venue, expressing her excitement and gratitude for the community’s support in raising awareness about the need for speed cameras on PCH. “I’m thrilled to have everyone here and to contribute something significant to our community. It’s wonderful that we all came together, and I’m stoked about how beautifully it turned out,” Park said.
The event aimed to highlight the dangers of PCH and the urgent need for speed cameras. The T-shirts, designed by Crosby and Pearson, a Malibu High School alumnus, featured major Malibu landmarks, including the Malibu Pier. Park mentioned that the idea behind the T-shirts was to empower locals to advocate for the immediate installation of speed cameras on PCH. Crosby explained her inspiration for the design, saying, “The stop sign was my first inspiration. Instead of S-T-O-P, I thought of ‘Slow the ***k down.’ Here in Malibu, surfers constantly run across PCH, which becomes dangerous when people speed. So, I depicted a family running with a surfboard and a boogie board along with the PCH sign.” Crosby and Park attended the City Council meeting on May 28 to invite the community to the event and distribute free T-shirts to the councilmembers. Park posted on social media, “STFD! Slow the F down on one side and on the other, the lovely view of Malibu along the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. We want to protect it and everyone traveling on it.”
An anonymous donor generously funded the creation and manufacturing of the T-shirts to honor the cause of safety on PCH and to respect those who have lost their lives on this highway. Pearson noted, “We included all the major landmarks to represent the life on PCH that we want to protect by slowing everyone down and making it safer.”

Advances Road Safety with Speed Camera Legislation
Senate Bill 1297 progresses to enhance PCH safety following tragic accidents, community support, and new awareness campaign
By Samantha Bravo
The City of Malibu is in the process of making history by prioritizing road safety along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) with significant efforts over the past few months. On June 17, Senate Bill 1297 (SB 1297) successfully passed out of the Assembly Transportation Committee. This bill authorizes the use of speed camera systems in designated areas of Malibu, aiming to enhance road safety and reduce speeding-related incidents. Introduced by Senator Ben Allen, who represents Malibu’s 24th District, SB 1297 garnered support from committee members, community advocates, and law enforcement officials. It will now move to the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee for further consideration. The speed cameras will be strategically installed in five high-risk areas along Malibu’s 21-mile stretch, where speeding is a significant threat to public safety. Data from other regions that have implemented similar measures show an average 41 percent reduction in fatal or severe injury crashes.
Former mayor Steve Uhring expressed his enthusiasm for the bill’s progress, stating, “The implementation of speed camera systems is vital for protecting our residents, pedestrians, and visitors from the dangers of speeding. This technology will deter reckless driving and save lives.” Senator Allen also praised the committee’s support, saying, “Passing SB 1297 out of the Assembly Transportation Committee is a major victory for public safety in Malibu. Speed cameras have been effective elsewhere, and I am confident they will have the same impact here.”
Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, whose 42nd District includes Malibu, co-authored the bill and supported it at Monday’s hearing. “This legislation represents a critical step towards making our roads safer,” Irwin said. “I look forward to its continued progress through the Assembly.”
The push for this bill follows the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine students in October 2023 caused by a speeding driver. Bridget Thompson, a classmate of the victims, testified in Sacramento, emphasizing the necessity of the legislation to prevent further tragedies. Michel Shane, whose daughter was killed on PCH in 2010, also testified, calling the bill’s passage a “beacon of hope.”

Malibu artist takes back the land
By Judy Abel
The ephemeral work of land artist Lita Albuquerque is reborn following Woolsey Fire
Art is the dynamic force that drives not only cultural but societal progress, serving as a mirror that reflects—and a lens that reshapes—a community’s values, struggles, and aspirations.
The Malibu community was forever changed by the devastating Woolsey Fire and it still grapples with its impact six years later as hundreds of families rebuild their lives. Woolsey’s scars are still visible on the land and psyches of those in its grip, forced to leave Malibu and for those rebuilding. But one of the fire’s victims, world-renowned artist Lita Albuquerque, is now “taking back the land,” revisiting her first acclaimed land art piece, “Malibu Line.”
Albuquerque, known for her large-scale environmental works, paintings, sculptures, and installations, is a land artist who emerged from California’s Light and Space Movement. Her work is held in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney, the Getty, MOCA, and more. Her “Celestial Disk” star map adorns the entrance to Los Angeles’ Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Born in Santa Monica, raised in Tunisia and Paris, Albuquerque moved to Malibu at age 13. It was here her career was born in a bohemian village near Tuna Canyon filled with artists, writers and filmmakers, which was dubbed the “Other Colony” by author/ anthropologist Jay Ruby. It was at this now dimly-remembered artists’ colony, bursting with Hollywood creatives and such luminaries as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, that Albuquerque became a collected painter known for her abstract work.
That changed in 1978 when the land became her canvas. She filled a 14” by 41’ trench on the land at the “Other Colony” with “Albuquerque blue” pigment to create “Malibu Line,” a vivid aquamarine trough running perpendicular out to the horizon where it met the ocean. The artist recalls that “as you walked up the hill, perceptually the blue went all the way to the horizon,” joining land, ocean, and sky. As described by LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), an organization that presents free and inclusive arts programming, “Malibu Line” was “a direct mark on the land that connects the viewer to the earth and to the horizon. By virtue of a slight optical illusion, the line both
spatially and symbolically links land to sky, and sky to the ocean horizon beyond.”
“They were really about the land,” the UCLA-educated artist says of her three initial Malibu land works, each utilizing her signature Albuquerque blue. “For me it was about light and about the land.”
By nature, land works are ephemeral. Over the next several years “Malibu Line” gradually eroded, finally grown over with wildflowers. Indeed, all three original Malibu land works are gone, weathered away by wind, rain, and fire. The “Other Colony” itself was consumed in the 1993 Old Topanga Fire.
Decades later the Woolsey Fire took Albuquerque’s longstanding Malibu home and with it, important artworks, journals, photographs, works by her playwright mother, recording artist grandmother, and the work of her daughters, both artists as well. Her husband, Carey Peck, lost treasured keepsakes of his father, the late actor Gregory Peck. “It was painful,” she recalled of losing her possessions and catalogs of artwork.
Now, in a break from her relentless forward-facing artistic journey, Albuquerque has revisited “Malibu Line,” her first land work. When initially approached with the idea, the artist resisted, saying, “I don’t recreate my work.” But that changed with the idea to also make a counterpart in Tunisia. Now, on the acreage where Woolsey took her former home, she has created a new “Malibu Line,” larger than the first, close to the site where a new Tunisian-inspired home with a striking blue dome is rising. For Albuquerque, “it’s about trying to reconnect to Tunisia,” to revisit a journey she “never quite felt completed.”
Revisiting “Malibu Line” wasn’t originally about a homecoming to her burned property. But living with the new artwork, “it felt like a real celebration of being back here. It was very moving.”
Shortly after the project was completed in Malibu, the artist reflected on the process of its creation, calling it “meditative…especially because my work is so ephemeral. I think a lot about the beauty of particle upon particle.” Digging and then filling the trench cup by cup, Albuquerque says she could see almost every grain of pigment as she poured it. “It was about connection and knowing this will also be in Tunisia. It felt like this blue was coming out of the earth and flowing to some unknown space.”
The companion piece sited on the Tunisian coast — where the Mediterranean Sea will replace the Pacific—is slated for 2025.
Albuquerque contemplates how long the new “Malibu Line” will remain on the land. “That’s important. That it is a mark. It’s ephemeral. It shows us about nature. It’s very simple. It’s very intimate. The whole idea is to just sit and have a relationship to it. To wonder what it is and to just have a moment to reflect, which is important in these times. And it blesses the land.”
In June, there was a rare opportunity to view the new “Malibu Line,” with tickets snapped up immediately. LAND will offer another limited round of free showings in September as a companion to Albuquerque’s two upcoming exhibitions, both part of the Getty Museum’s popular Pacific Standard Time initiative. Those stunning new works include “Earth Skin,” premiering September 11 at Michael Kohn Gallery, where she’ll cover the gallery floor with a granite composite so thin it will appear flush with the ground. Her other new work debuts at Cal Tech on September 27 and is titled “This Moment in Time.” It will feature a walking bridge covered in gold leaf. “That’s where a couple of astrophysicists received a Nobel Prize for the nuclear synthesis theory that talks about how gold is formed through the explosion of supernova. It’s an homage to them,” Albuquerque explains.
In August, check nomadicdivision.org for free tickets to “Malibu Line” viewings.
Ania Migdal’s Coastal Kimono Coats TM
Excite and Inspire
By Barbara Burke
Malibu’s newest fashion design sensation, Ania Migdal, happily exudes inspiring energy as she enters the inviting, embracing creative space at HOUSE OF MALIBU®, wearing one of her stunning, consciously-curated, hand-painted kimonos.
An intuitive and thoughtful designer, Ania has thoroughly researched the history and symbolism of ancestral Japanese attire.
“Historically, kimonos were traditionally ceremonial, and one doesn’t usually think of them being associated with wearing a beach coverup,” Ania says, adding, “I set out to change that perception—my kimonos can serve as a casual bathing suit cover up or they can accompanying a somewhat formal outfit that one could wear when she goes to Soho House.”
Ania’s designs lend a novel aesthetic to kimonos—she imbues them with her unique style and personalized motifs, ensuring that their colors and fabrics work together to help reveal the unique identity of the wearer. She infuses inscribed messages within traditional, non-synthetic fabrics such as the sensationally supple 100 percent cotton fabrics from Turkey that serve as the canvas for her artistry, adorning her so cozy and comfortable that one never wants to take them off bathrobes.
A design visionary, she emphasizes that the kimonos can include personalized inscriptions, perhaps a lover’s message, or a verse from a favorite theatrical play or literary source.
Free-flowing and just plain fun, Ania Migdal’s signature Take Me as I Am collection features long, flowing kimonos with gorgeously pleated sleeves. Wearing one allows a person to embrace her inner bohemian soul, where wild hearts roam freely, and dreams know no boundaries, the clever and quotable Ania quips.
Ania models another gem—a gorgeous jacket with a fantastic fringe, perfect for Malibu casual events, which, in Malibu is almost all events, as locals well know.
The genius of the garments lies in their clever simplicity. Some are fashioned in linen with hand-painted vertical lines that first draw one’s eyes to explore their gorgeous fabrics and dyes, only to become further intrigued by a strategically positioned warrior eye that invites a glancing onlooker to linger with his gaze so as to thoroughly appreciate the workmanship as well as the full meaning any inscribed messages.
“Only in the eyes of love can one find infinity,” Ania posits, and, amazingly, when one dons one of the kimonos, she seems to acquire a lovely alluring aura.
Behind all the first impressions and inviting expressions imbued in every kimono, lies Ania’s solemn commitment to only use Earth friendly fabrics and to lift up women artists everywhere.
“Our mission is to support other women artisans from all over the globe and to choose the best quality fabrics only from sustainable sources,” Ania says. Gesturing toward some of her gorgeous gowns, she adds, “For instance, these kimonos are hand painted by a lady in Vietnam who designs these unique flowing pleated sleeves.”
textiles when I attended The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising,” Ania says. Truth be told—she learned that industry knowledge very well, graduating Cum Laude with a 3.98 GPA.
“When we graduated, we had a huge ceremony at the Staples Center,” Ania fondly recalls from years ago. “I superglued, ‘I did it, Mama!’ on the top of my graduation cap!”
Intrigued by Ania’s designer brand that champions originality and self-expression while also providing a harmonious blend of ecofriendly design and timeless elegance, inquisitive shoppers can visit @houseofmalibuinc and houseofmalibu.com.
Ania brings a breadth of fashion industry experience to (HŌM). In her earlier career, she focused on product development and production for many large brand retailers such as Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Saks Fifth Ave, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, lending her expertise to creating and bringing products to market.
“I learned an enormous amount of interesting and useful knowledge regarding fabrics and
Now, her message is, “We’re doing it, Mama!”
As they expand (HŌM) together, Ania joins her internationally famous and well respected mother, interior designer Malgosia Migdal, whose highly sought after acumen honors a modern European influence where minimalism meets functionality.
Remarkably, the younger Ania Migdal’s clothing fashions could be characterized the same way—it is minimalist in design details and, after one purchases one of the kimonos or jackets, she’ll realize that they’re so functional that she will wonder what she ever did without one!

Malibu Film Society Revives Local Screenings
Starting with an Acclaimed Animated Film and Upcoming Buster Keaton Tribute
By Barbara Burke
“It’s so nice to have movies screened here in Malibu again!” exclaimed Diane Pedersen, a longtime Malibu resident. “I wish they’d screen them all here!”
“Eighteen years ago, my company was contacted by a studio that said it wanted to have a screening in Malibu of Denzel Washington’s movie, "The Great Debaters,” said Scott Tallal, MFS President, eliciting nods of affirmation when he added, “That event was held in the same room we are in tonight, back when this was the Malibu Vineyard Church.”
Soon, the audience was viewing Robot Dreams, a highly acclaimed animated tragicomedy film directed by Pablo Berger, the Director of Blancanieves. "Robot Dreams" is still playing in theaters and is widely praised by top filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro. The film had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023 in the special screenings section,
was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, and won the European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, among other accolades.
Buster Keaton will be celebrated on August 15
“I love to reflect on the history of film—We look to the past to show how the film industry got to where it is today,” said Hollywood historian, producer, and screenwriter Dave Weddle "Battlestar Galactica, "For All Mankind. “I’ve loved Buster Keaton my entire life, and the film
industry is central to Malibu, so the MFS is the best place to reflect on the individuals who built the industry.”
Presenting "Buster Keaton: America’s Avant-Garde Auteur," Weddle will lead attendees in an evening of film clips and conversation regarding why Keaton remains such a powerful, indelible presence in film. One of the greatest comic actors of all time, Keaton influenced Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Sid Caesar, Lucille Ball, and many others. His surreal, unconventional style was emulated by Orson Welles, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, and more.
Weddle knows a thing or two about film history, given that, as Tallal notes, “He wrote the definitive book about Sam Peckinpah, a writer for Gunsmoke, among many other works. "If They Move...Kill ‘Em!: The Life and Times of Sam Peckinpah" is a detailed work that depicts the life and times of the man who directed "Ride the High Country, Straw Dogs, The Getaway, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and the Wild Bunch.”
“Simply stated,” Tallal said. “Without Peckinpah, we wouldn’t have someone like Tarantino.”
The Malibu Film Society is loved very much in Malibu. As Tallal put it, “After all, the Colony started out as the Malibu Movie Colony back in the day.”
MFS presented movies at the Malibu Jewish Community Center from 2009 to 2021, Tallal noted, adding, “The community really enjoyed attending the events.”
“MFS has a great track record of picking very good films,” Tallal explained, noting that when he interviewed Arthur Harari after a screening of Anatomy of a Fall, Harari was the latest in the unbroken string of Q&A guests who went on to win their first Academy Award after appearing at MFS.
“It’s a feather in the city’s cap and is exciting for our residents that the Malibu Film Society is going to have three events at city hall’s beautiful theater where they can enjoy great films and speakers,” said Barbara Bruderlin, CEO of the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce.
“Hopefully, ultimately, the city will build a performing arts center for this multi-faceted, artistic community of ours.”
How to attend events
“Thanks to our city Council, MFS will bring two more special events to Malibu this summer—with 50 free seats reserved for local residents,” Tallal shared. “Registration is open for the second event, and the third event will be announced soon on our website.”
“Interested residents must complete our one-time registration process at Malibufilmsociety.org,” Tallal explained. “Once registered, you’ll be able to start making reservations as each new show is announced. Advanced registration is required for each show, with 50 free seats available on a first-come/firstserved basis. Once those free seats have been claimed, additional seats will be available at a special discount.”
Existing MFS members living in Malibu do not need to register because they have already received free admission.
21 Miles of Entertainment
All features great and small; Malibu entertains the world
By Benjamin Marcus
This may or may not come as a surprise, but Malibu is loaded high and low — from Duke’s to Neptune’s Net, Saddle Peak to Old Joe’s — with creative, talented people who are moving and shaking high and low — in front of, behind, over and hovering with the camera. These creative types get particularly active in the summer, and particularly now that covid is kinda over and all that strike nonsense is pau, and the wheels of Hollywood are rollin’, rollin’, rollin’.
Slow the F down!
Continued congratulations to “21 Miles in Malibu.” Michel Shane, Nic Davis, and Meredith Mantik rang the alarm bells loud and strong in 2023 about the dangers of Pacific Coast Highway, and those dangers are still endangering all of us. If only the wheels of legislation rolled as fast as the wheels of vehicles on the highways and byways of Malibu. (Go stand at the intersection of Webb Way and PCH on a weekend and be appalled at all the “Fast and Furious” wannabes blasting through town. Dumb. Dangerous.) Help is on the way in the form of speed cameras, maybe more police patrols, and public awareness — but people are still being injured and damaged. Seems like once a week now, doesn’t it?
According to Michel Shane, “‘21 Miles in Malibu’ is not your typical, easy-to-watch, or informative piece. It offers a distinct perspective on the theme of death on PCH, which might be difficult for some. This unique perspective sets our film apart and makes it a powerful tool for an educational campaign.
“The film has won 14 awards at different film festivals, from Best Documentary to a humanitarian award from the Accolade Film Festival, which you don’t enter; they award it. I am very proud of that. We recently won three Telly Silver Awards for Advocacy and Causes.”
Shane continued, “We are finished with the film festivals. Before releasing the film to the general public, we are doing an education campaign where we go to schools and talk to ninth-graders about driving. The film has had a profound impact on our audience, inspiring them to think critically about their actions. Our film has sparked
essential conversations and changed perspectives, making a significant difference in our community. We are presently looking for sponsors to allow us to continue this battle to make PCH a safe street.
“I feel frustrated that it has taken so long, and 61 lives, along with families, were destroyed. There needs to be more of an awakening. I have spent 14 years trying to improve PCH — and others longer — and we are still very complacent. The greatest compliment I received was from a person who approached me after seeing the film and said it changed the way she drives on PCH: what more could I ask for?”
Julia and Sam and Gaga and Sean and Leo...
A quick trip around IMDB — aided and abetted by Chat GPT — shows Point Dume resident Julia Roberts currently shooting “In the Hunt” with Andrew Garfield and Chloe Sevigny. Her husband, Danny Moder is the cinematographer on “Miss You, Love You,” starring Allison Janney and Andrew Rannells.
Sam Elliott rules. You know it. I know it. We know it. But he is humble and cool about it. His IMDB credits go as far back as Card Player #2 in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (he met Katharine Ross in another picture) and include 106-plus roles over five decades. He’s the kind of actor who you look at his credits and think, “Oh, that’s right! He was in “Lifeguard” (1976), “Road House” (1989), “Mask” (1985), Virgil Earp in “Tombstone” (1993), narrated “The Big Lebowski” (1998), acted alongside Mel Gibson in “We Were Soldiers” (2002), “Hulk” (2003), “Up in the Air” (2009), the sixth season of “Justified” (2010) and acted
alongside Lady Gaga as Bradley Cooper’s brother Bobby in “A Star Is Born” (2018).
Sam Elliott was tortured, heroic, and tragic as Shea Brennan in “1883” and could rest on a big stack of laurels.
But nope: According to IMDB, Elliott did voice work as Ward Hill Lamon in “The Gettysburg Address” along with, get this: Michael C. Hall, Cary Elwes, Neal McDonough, Dermot Mulroney, Gary Busey, William Fichtner, Matthew Broderick, Lois Smith, Lili Taylor, Aidan Quinn, David Morse (as Abraham Lincoln), David Straithairn (as Ralph Waldo Emerson), Jason Alexander, and Edward Asner.
‘JOKER 2’ COMING SOON TO YOU
And speaking of Lady Gaga, what’s she up to? Oh geez, almost forgot because of COVID and the strike: She’s playing (singing?!) Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker: Folie a Deux.” It was two whole summers ago when writer/director Todd Phillps was renting a house on Malibu Road writing the “Joker” sequel. He hung out at Malibu Kitchen some mornings and said he was worried about outdoing the original, so we shall see.
According to IMDB, the release date is Oct. 4 — so that’s something else to look forward to, along with Indian summer, late southern hemisphere swells, football, and Halloween.
Mel Gibson
Julia!!! Can’tWait
Malibu native Sean Penn is currently in production on “Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Event Film” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro, so you know that’s going to suck.
Kidding aside, part-time Malibu resident DiCaprio is involved in no less than nine productions right now: Producer on “Roosevelt,” “Untitled Volkswagen Project,” “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder,” “Captain Planet,” “Atari” and
executive producer on “Howl,” an eightepisode TV mini-series “The Devil in White City,” “The Sigma Force” and “Jim Jones.”
So leave Leo alone, he’s busy! (Leo! If you’re reading this and still planning to make the Miki Dora movie: Mark Ruffalo as Da Cat and Vince Vaughn as Greg Noll. Trust me.)
‘Bullitt,’ Bradley, Brolin
Busy, yes, but Leo’s a slacker compared to Steven Spielberg, who — according to IMDB — has 20 irons in the fire: Executive producer on “Twisters,” “Transformers One,” “Jurassic World 4,” "James,” “The Challenger,” “Untitled Morgan Freeman/Steven Spielberg Project,” “Untitled Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover,” “Gremlins 3,” “Untitled John Williams Documentary,” “Real Steel 2,” “Napoleon TV series,” “Untitled Third Tintin Film,” “The Talisman” TV project and producer on “Aleister Arcane,” “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” “Intelligent Life,” the promisingsounding “Untitled Frank Bullitt Project,” “Robopocalypse,” “Untitled Bee Gees Biopic,” and “Untitled Adventures of Tintin Sequel.”
Who’s gonna have a go at filling Steve McQueen’s shoes? Bradley Cooper?!!? We shall see.
“Bullitt” is one of those classics you think could never be remade — “Lawrence of Arabia,” “West Side Story” — but you never know.
A couple years ago, Josh Brolin rolled up to Malibu Kitchen with Jordie T apres surf. He signed a history of the skateboard book because Brolin had been in “Thrashin’” (1986) way back in the 20th Century. Someone asked Brolin what he was working on and there were howls of disbelief when he said “True Grit.”
“Who dares ?!” a Boomer challenged Brolin. “Who dares remake Boomer hallowed ground!!?”
“Coen Brothers,” he said and smiled quietly to himself.
And guess what? They killed it. Jeff Bridges, Hayley Steinfeld, Barry Pepper, Brolin, and the rest crafted a word-perfect remake as good or better than the original.
One niggly glitch/goof: Brolin’s hapless murderer-on-the-run Tom Chaney had Hollywood teeth. An outlaw on the run in the Indian Territory would probably not have perfect pearly whites if he had any teeth at all.
So Bradley Cooper, as Detective Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, going after the 21st Century Syndicate.
Will 21st Century Bullitt be outrunning mobsters in a 1000plus horsepower, stupidly-fast electric Tesla Plaid? Getting air in the streets of San Francisco chased and menaced by a bad guy flying one of those one-man Jetson flying drones?
Rad! I’ll buy that for a dollar!
Steven Spielberg recognized the original “West Side Story” as a masterpiece and challenged himself to remake a classic and he pulled it off.
When you’re a guy who makes movies about sharks
Like Lawrence and Sharif Ali crossing the Nefud desert, I would have bet dollars to donuts that a remake of “West Side Story” couldn’t be done — but I would have lost those dollars.
The remake was rocking. Spielberg stayed true to the music, futzed with the story a little bit and he had to find talent who could sing and dance and act.
No substitutions. Not easy.
The original “West Side Story” (1961) is certainly one of the 10 Greatest American Movies, an inspiration to anyone who writes, composes, sings, dances, prances, acts.
Here’s a fun game for movie aficionados: Casting “West Side Story” with a Dream Team of talent in their prime. How about:
Anita would be JLo because she’s P.R. and she can sing and dance and would murder “America.”
Mark Wahlberg in his prime as Riff — Marky Mark can sing and dance and he was a for-real violent street thug at one time. He could bring those flavors.
Bernardo? Marc Antony, but then remember “Beat It” and other Michael Jackson music videos are
homages to “West Side Story” — so imagine The King of Pop as Bernardo: Maybe yes, maybe no. It’s a thin line between brilliant and bomb.
Madonna would be underused but perfect as blonde bombshell Graziella: Riff’s moll who swoops and swirls and looks good and maybe sings but don’t say much.
There was a time when Woody Allen would have been great as Doc and Rudy Giuliani as Officer Krupke, but those two ain’t cool anymore.
Maria and Tony? At one time maybe Ariana Grande or Christina Aguilera, but Olivia Rodrigo is Maria-wholesome, Filipatina pretty and she’s got serious pipes. But can she act?
Tony? Justin Timberlake in his more innocent, fresh-faced prime?
Anyone? Anybody’s?
But that’s just fantasy talk. Steven Spielberg recognized the original “West Side Story” as a masterpiece and challenged himself to remake a classic and he pulled it off.
Super Buff Brolin
When you’re a Janusz
“West Side Story” was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one. Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski was up for his seventh Oscar nomination — he won for “Saving Private Ryan” and “Schindler’s List.” He didn’t win it but he should have.
Go watch the school dance scene where the Sharks and the Jets face off and dance to “Mambo!” — and where Tony and Maria lock eyes and begin their forbidden romance. Some very fancy camerawork to catch some very fancy dancing and singing. At the Malibu Newsstand when Janusz Kaminski was asked how long it took to shoot that scene: “Four days,” he said. “One day to rehearse and three to shoot it.”
when “Joker” didn’t win Best Picture and “Parasite” did. “The Oscars ain’t perfect. ‘Apocalypse Now’ lost to ‘Kramer v Kramer.’ How was Naomi Watts not nominated for ‘Mulholland Drive’? Even the dude who made ‘Crash’ didn’t think it deserved Best Picture. How was Val Kilmer not nominated for ‘Tombstone’?”
Wow. Four days only. Go watch that very very complicated scene. A lot of color and moving parts and camera work.
They should have got an Oscar for Efficiency if not Best Picture.
The original “West Side Story” in 1961 won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Art Direction, Color Cinematography, Color Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Music (Scoring of a Musical Picture) and Best Picture.
Sheesh. The remake of “West Side Story” deserved one of those little statues, but “Coda” got the smirks.
But hey, the Oscars aren’t perfect. That was the commiseration to Todd Phillips
And speaking of Josh Brolin: How was he not nominated for “No Country For Old Men”? Brolin put on Llewlyn Moss like a Carhartt jacket. The Oscars ain’t perfect, nope.
And now Spielberg’s going to have a go at “Bullitt.” A very stylish, ‘70s-fast-andslow-paced cops-and-mobsters picture. Guaranteed, Spielberg is going to try to outdo one of the greatest car chases of all time and he’s working with the actor who portrayed the genius who wrote an American masterpiece: Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein and the score for “West Side Story.”
It’s circular. It’s like a carousel. You pay the quarter, you get on the horse, it goes up and down, and around. It’scircular. Circle, with the music, the flow. All good things.
MEL, ED, AMY, JONAH
Hell’s bells! What about Mel’s? According to IMDB, Mel Gibson is starring alongside occasional Malibu renter Lorraine Bracco in “Monster Summer” and Mel is also starring as Detective Martin Riggs in the upcoming “Lethal Weapon 5.”
Longtime Malibu resident Ed Harris is like Sam Elliot. Flick through his 110 IMDB acting credits going back to “The Rockford Files” (1978) and be reminded and amazed by the Greatest Hits: John Glenn in “The Right Stuff” (1983), The Voice in "Field of Dreams” (1989), Dave Moss in "Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992), Gene Kranz in “Apollo 13” (1995), General Francis X Hummell in “The Rock” (1996), Christof in “The Truman Show” (1998), of course the very scary Carl Fogarty in “A History of Violence” (2005), “Appaloosa” (2008), and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022).
Harris won a Smirker for Best Actor in “Pollock” (2000). A mountain of laurels to rest on, but there’s no rest for the wickedly talented and IMDB states Harris is starring as Boris in “Concrete.” Working with Glenn Powell, Margaret Qualley, Bill Camp and Topher Grace in “Huntington,” directed by John Patton Ford. He’s in “Riff Raff” along with a promising cast of Lewis Pullman, Jennifer Coolidge, Bill Murray, and Pete Davidson.
Harris is starring as James Tyrone to Jessica Lange’s Mary Tyrone in “Long Day’s Journey into Night” — filling some big shoes from the original 1962 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Ralph Richardson. Ed Harris is starring alongside his charming wife Amy Madigan “School for the Blind.”
Does Matthew McConaughey still live in Malibu? No? Okay, forget him.
What about Jonah Hill? As of this writing the surfer/actor/writer/director/ Rivianista/beach bum’s Colony beach house was for sale and we don’t know if he’s leaving town. But currently Hill is in post-production on “Outcome,” which he co-wrote with Ezra Woods, directed and co-stars with Malibu’s favorite daughter Kaia Gerber, occasional Malibu jogger Keanu Reeves, Matt Bomer, Cameron Diaz, and David Spade. “Outcome”: “Follows Hollywood star Reef as he is forced to confront his problems and atone for his past after being threatened by a bizarre video footage from his past.”
‘Lawrence of Arabia’ redux
“True Grit.” “West Side Story.” They said it couldn’t be done. And since we’re dreaming, how about a TV miniseries that recreates T.E Lawrence’s epic “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom?” I would have thought “Lawrence of Arabia” couldn’t be remade and then there was that scene in “Inglorious Basterds” with Mike Myers as the veddy British General Ed Fenech and Michael Fassbender as an elegant, cucumber-cool, Lawrence-like English spy Archie Hicox.
Stretch that scene out into a remake of the greatest story/novel/movie of all time.
Spiked
Is that little statue smirking at Spike Jonze, who won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for “Her” (2013) — a forward-looking movie he wrote, directed, and co-produced. “Her” was nominated for five Academy Awards. Jonze won for Best Original Screenplay. Out in the water at Old Joe’s with his buddy Jonah Hill, someone asked Jonze about his Oscar speech: “I don’t remember,” the soft-spoken auteur said. “But the first person I saw when I stood up was Jonah smiling at me, so that was cool.”
Hey, no pressure — only 43.7 million people watching.
According to IMDB, the Colony resident isn’t working on anything, although we’re still wondering how he talked Bjork into doing that backflip off the wall in the music video for “Oh So Quiet,” way back in 1995. Hopefully, Mr. Jonze is working on something top secret and cool. Are you, Mr. Jonze?
First rule of surfing Old Joe’s …
If we had bought the Lautner house on the sand in the Colony — and had been one of the early users/investors in Uber — we wouldn’t leave Malibu either. But Ed Norton has been busy doing the voice of Sammy for the “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” mini TV series, the Narrator in “Longevity Hackers,” and portraying folk singer Pete Seeger in “A Complete Unknown,” directed by James Mangold.
If that sounds like a Bob Dylan biopic, you win a cookie! Ed Norton is starring alongside Timothée Chalamet as Malibu resident Bob Dylan, Monica Barbara as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvia Russo, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Kayli Carter as Maria Muldaur and Laura Kariuki as Mavis Staples.
Yikes! That all sounds like something worth leaving the beach for a while.
And speaking of Bob Dylan, according to The Oracle, Chat GPT: “Bob Dylan will be touring in the summer of 2024 as part of the Outlaw Music Festival. He will be performing alongside Willie Nelson & Family, with other notable artists such as Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, John Mellencamp, and Brittney Spencer joining on various dates. The tour kicks off on June 21 in Alpharetta, Georgia, and concludes on Sept. 17 at Darien Lake Amphitheater in Buffalo, New York.”
Back in time for fall and Indian summer. Clever man.
Malibu music
Has anyone actually seen Beyoncé out and about in Malibu, or is she in the Johnny Carson/Bob Dylan/Aaron Rodgers layer of Invisible Malibu Citizen? According to IMDB, Beyonce is voicing the part of Nala in “Mufasa: The Lion King.” She’ll be there alongside her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter who is voicing the part of Kiara.
Come to think of it: Beyoncé as Anita for the WSS Dream Team?
Musically, Malibu residents Flea and Anthony Keidis are in the middle of their summer tour across the midwest from Missouri to Minnesota and up into Canada through the rest of July. Maybe back in Malibu for August to catch some rays in the sunny surf and enjoy those long evenings and epic moonrises over Carson.
All of these artists are Dume Kopfs who spend as much water time as possible so you have to
wonder how they like spending so much time on the road, during Malibu prime time.
Point Dume resident Chris Martin did six nights at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas and then shows in Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Portland. And according to The Oracle: “Martin is primarily occupied with Coldplay’s extensive world tour … across Europe. Additionally, there have been reports about his personal life, including ongoing discussions about a potential wedding with Dakota Johnson.”
Mazel tov!
In partnership with Josh Brolin (a lifelong on-and-off again Malibu resident), Paul Taublieb is co-directing and co-producing a doc on Lyon Herron in conjunction with Barbie Herron. CAA is assisting with securing financing. Also, WME is currently shopping Taublieb’s completed next feature doc, “Pay Dirt: The Story of Supercross.”
Oingo Boingo Blanket Bingo
Richard Gibbs is having a blast with his Composer's Breakfast Club at Aviator Nation every Monday. Dua Lipa’s newest opus, “Radical Optimism,” was recorded in his Malibu studio, Woodshed Recording, and has been hanging high on worldwide charts all summer. Gibbs has also been busy fulfilling his newly elected (well as of last summer) role as a governor of the Motion Picture Academy. And he’s working on a book: “I am currently working on a pretty deep non-fiction book about the clashes of religion and music across time and the globe. More specifically, the ways in which religious extremism has impacted my calling and that of countless others, from the Taliban to the Beatles, and even to the silliness of how blue laws made it so people could not dance to Oingo Boingo. In order to present a balanced (and more erudite) view, I have brought on board my little sister, Reverend Doctor Mary Grace Gibbs Dupree, soonto-be-ordained Episcopalian priest. She is a religious scholar par excellence. Not ready to reveal the immediately catchy title.”
If you haven’t checked out the Composer’s Breakfast Club every Monday at Aviator Nation — well you’re blowing it.You’re lame!
Naw, you’re awright, but you should go feast on that breakfast buffet and listen to a variety of Malibu creatives.
At the Composer’s Breakfast Club, Tony Selvage, the proud and eager father of Topanga resident Arielle Moire-Selvage,
suggested we check out the work of his talented daughter — who was there at the beginning but had to cut out for acupuncture.
Ms. Moire-Selvage suggested we listen to her song “Santa Cruz,” a somber, ‘70sish bluesy song of loss and love that rings true with someone who grew up there in the 1970s.
According to Selvage, she is qualified to sing the blues: “I’ve been through a hellish time personally, lately. I would say that I am resilient, smart, kind and gifted. I’m now rebuilding my life after a recent, big ‘life storm’ — like the storm/rain Topanga had with the landslide. I’ve been covering the song ‘Landslide’ for 20 years, and would love to have permission to record it once.”
Ms. Moire-Selvage is finding that sometimes the best way to salvage your soul — beyond music — is to help others. And that is what she’s doing in Topanga: “I am putting energy in to improve the Malibu/Topanga community and greater Los Angeles community through my music and businesses. There is no ‘I’ in TEAM, and I want my entrepreneurship valued, supported, and honored by the community — not envied or looked down on because I am a youngin’.
“My indie record label I am establishing is called Topanga Tribe (Topanga Tribe, LLC) and then there’s a surfing for mothers/caregivers and their young children business/educational program called Mommies That Love Surf [Mommies That Love Surf, LLC].”
The pride of SLO, jazz pianist Lisa Hilton is burning the midnight oil prepping for her 28th recording session at East West Studios in Hollywood in early August. Thus spake Lisa: “Although it seems like everyone’s traveling this month, there is no place I’d rather be than here in Malibu with my Steinway and a bit of sunshine on the side.”

Matt Rapf’s long-awaited confessional autobiography “Tres Parties” is currently being edited, produced, proofed, and published, and will rock the casbah with its detailed description of growing up a surf punk in the Malibu Colony in the 1980s. Matt changes most of the names to protect the rascalish. Barry Kearson wrote a moving foreword in tribute to Matt, and Peter Maguire wrote a banging backstory to Matt — which explains who and where he came from and why he had devils and angels orbiting his head as a surf-stoked, addictive, drop out, rowdy, 20-something growing up in the Malibu Colony.
In synchronicity with the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dirk Braun flew to Tahiti to film “End of the Road” — a documentary about the powerfully beautiful waves of Teahupo’o and the beautifully powerful images from French photographer Ben Thouard.
Barry Kearson Matt Rapf Miley Cyrus
Fearing this column overlooked the obvious, Chat GPT reminded us that Miley Cyrus is a celebrity currently living in Malibu. Doh! According to Chat GPT: “Miley Cyrus is currently working on several exciting projects in 2024. She recently released a new song titled ‘Doctor (Work It Out)’ in collaboration with Pharrell, marking their first partnership since 2014.
And the Malibu resident formerly known as Hannah Montana will be performing at the 2025 Super Bowl, which will be a nice break as the World Champion San Francisco Football 49ers hit their stride and put a hurt on the Kansas City Chiefs — or whoever.
Sitting at Zinqué writing this, there’s helicopter cinematographer Frédéric North deeply involved in his breakfast — and a meeting. Knowing to never interrupt a Frenchman while he’s eating — or a Malibu person in a meeting — IMDB confirmed our suspicion that North did all the helicopter cinematography for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley”: “Yes, it was one of the most challenging and difficult flying I have ever done on a movie set,” North said. “Being in a moving, 2.5-ton helicopter at less than a foot off the ground between cars was crazy. Especially downtown Los Angeles on a narrow street … and I am not even mentioning the sideways take off from a 15th M-story building in Century City. It was an intense day!”
There’s alla that and a whole lot more emanating and resonating, moving and shaking from this nice quiet little beachside community. What about Beck? Pat Benatar? Neil and Darryl? Goldie and Kurt? Gary Busey? John Lydon-Rotten? Brooke Burke? Richard Marks? David Charvet? Mike D? And a couple dozen other talents above and below the line, in front of and behind the camera?
But we’re outta time and outta space. As Jonesy used to say, “Thanks for listenin’.”
AN HONOR FOR AN ENTERTAINMENT ICON
Written by Judy Abel
Photography by Laura Johansen
Perhaps the most endearing entertainer of our time and national treasure is Malibu’s own Dick Van Dyke. The beloved actor, comedian, singer, and dancer, has not only left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment but locally as well as one of Malibu’s biggest supporters. From his decades of staging a community Halloween spectacular at the home he shares with his wife Arlene to the couple’s enduring support for theatrical and artistic endeavors for local youth, the Van Dykes’ commitment to the community is tireless. Now the community is giving back. In a first, the theater at Malibu High School is now renamed The Arlene and Dick Van Dyke Theater. It’s a heartfelt tribute from not only the public school, but from the entire Malibu community to honor the couple for their significant contributions to the arts and education.
Van Dyke’s imprint on our collective entertainment memories is nearly unequaled. From his early beginnings in radio and television to his iconic roles in film and theater, the versatile entertainer has cemented his legendary status with a career that’s a testament to his charm and enduring appeal. Now at 98 years young, Malibu’s biggest cheerleader continues to delight audiences and spread joy wherever he goes from a surprise appearance on “The Masked Singer” to his recent historic win at the Daytime Emmy Awards, his Kennedy Center Honor, reuniting with Carol Burnett at her hand and footprint ceremony in Hollywood, and of course his multiple Emmy Award nominated CBS television special “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic.” His motto, “Keep Moving,” also the
title of one of his books, is living proof that life gets better the longer you live it, especially with the one you love; in Van Dyke’s case with his adoring wife Arlene. The two have been singing, dancing, and laughing together for more than 12 years of married bliss.
But even with all the awards and accolades from his entertainment peers and his adoration from fans young, old, and worldwide, the legendary performer and Arlene say they are “over the moon” with the honor they just received from their own Malibu community. “It’s a great honor for the both of us,” Van Dyke says of including his devoted Arlene.
“It’s just something I never would have expected.”
A glittering reception to inaugurate the newly named theater was attended by celebrities and admirers of the couple who thanked them for their unwavering commitment to educating and nurturing new talent. The June 15th event also marked the launch of the Arlene and Dick Van Dyke Endowment for the Arts, a $3 million fund to support arts education across all four Malibu public schools. The endowment aims to provide long-term funding for arts programs benefiting students for generations to come.
The importance of public schools arts education is not lost on Arlene, Dick and many of the celebrities who performed at the theater naming. They all mentioned their gratitude for receiving their initial training and their first steps on a public school stage.
Jason Alexander, who served as Master of Ceremonies, called himself a proud product of public schools theater training adding, “Both Dick and Arlene understand that passion for the arts and talent in the arts must both begin to be nurtured in youth. (Our) journeys in the performing arts began in high schools just like this one… and if they aren’t there, many journeys never begin. They’re ensuring young people will not only continue to dream dreams, but will have a place to begin to make them come true.”
Alexander first met the “Mary Poppins” star 30 years ago after performing Van Dyke’s Tony winning part in a television production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” He told a touching story of Van Dyke’s generosity. The day after the show aired the “Seinfeld” actor says he got the most wonderful gift —a bottle of champagne, flowers and a note. “I don’t know how he got my address, I had never met him,” Alexander recounted. “To this day I have that card on my mantle. It says, ‘Dear Jason, now I know how to play the role. You were magnificent. Fondly, Dick Van Dyke.’” The two have been friends ever since. Alexander used the words “kind and humble” describing his friend, adding “kindness and artistry do not always travel together, but the brand of kindness and artistry that Dick and Arlene share makes them perfect partners to travel through life together.”
The couple’s exuberant partnership was praised by actress Michelle Lee who starred with Van Dyke in “The Comic.” Lee and Van Dyke have been friends for decades and she now embraces Arlene as a good friend too saying, “She’s an amazing woman and to watch the two of them together is startling because they’re so in love with each other. You see it. There’s such warmth. How they value their relationship.”
Songstress Melissa Manchester performed her signature tune, “Through the Eyes of Love” for the honorary couple, adding, “The fact that his legacy is so
secure in giving back to young students and education, it’s thrilling to be a part of it.”
While Dick charms audiences in front of the cameras and let’s face it, behind the scenes as well—that’s where he met Arlene. She’s built a career as a costume designer, makeup artist, and now singer and producer. As a creative, Arlene remains passionate about funding the arts saying, “Public schools all around the country and
around the world are not being funded. They’re not being prioritized as important. I think the arts are just as important as math, science, history and [people] make better human beings when they have an art background.” Dick elaborating, “Some schools have dropped their arts program altogether, particularly theater. It’s such good training for kids for their composure and self-confidence to get up on the stage. It’s part of their education and we’re going to do a lot of that.”
Van Dyke discovered his passion for performing in Danville, Illinois. “I was in every performance,” attributing that in part to his school theater’s lack of a sound system. “I was the one who had a voice that would carry to the back of the theater and was taller than all the girls so I got all the parts.” That auditorium is now also named after Van Dyke in tribute. At the ribbon cutting event, the beloved showman quipped, “We’re gonna make actors out of all your kids,” eliciting laughs. “This is such a big thing for me. The more kids can get on the stage, the more confident they become. I’ve seen it. I’ve directed a lot of children and something changes when they get on a stage. They get a certain feeling of confidence about themselves. I love to direct kids. They’re so responsive and they’re so anxious to learn that it’s just fun doing it.”
In 2018, the Van Dykes rehearsed with middle school students for a stage version of “Mary Poppins.” After one performance, Van Dyke, who Arlene says can’t resist a spotlight, got up on stage and sang the memorable ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ with the children. “It was this beautiful moment and you could see his love for the arts and kids! He is so joyful,” parent Jolynn Regan reminisced.
Later when Van Dyke returned to Malibu High to emcee a talent showcase Regan questioned, “Why is there not a theater in Malibu named after the Van Dykes?” She recounted Dick’s reaction, “He being a humble guy that he is said, ‘Oh, gosh, well I don’t know. That would just be amazing.’ He was so sweet about it.”
Van Dyke wasn’t a household name until his eponymous television show catapulted him to stardom. “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” created by comedy genius Carl Reiner, originally starred Reiner in the pilot titled “Head of the Family” in 1961. But the show fell flat. Story goes, producer Sheldon Leonard suggested a new talent on the scene, Dick Van Dyke. Reiner is said to have questioned, “What’s a Dick Van Dyke?”
The rest is history and an undisputed classic television show thanks to Van Dyke’s charisma, comedic genius and impeccable timing. The show still airs after 60 years.
“The Dick Van Dyke Show” not only solidified Van Dyke’s reputation as a leading man in television but also earned him several Emmy Awards and continues to influence countless sitcoms.
Parallel to his television success, Van Dyke ventured into film, showcasing his musical and vocal talents. One of his most beloved roles is of course in “Mary Poppins” as Bert, the cheerful chimney sweep who captivates audiences with his infectious energy and high-stepping dance moves. At age 92, while filming “Mary Poppins Returns” the versatile and agile performer shocked audiences when he nimbly hopped upon a table to perform a jig, one of the film’s highlights earning him even more acclaim.
Starring in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “The Comic,” and “Divorce American Style” demonstrated his range as a leading man with the ability to seamlessly transition between comedy, drama, and musical theater. In addition to his work on screen, Van Dyke also made significant contributions to theater, both on Broadway and in regional productions with credits including starring roles in “Bye Bye Birdie,” “The Music Man,” and “Damn Yankees,” showcasing his passion for live performance and his ability to command the stage. Television audiences could never let him go though, with a few iterations of other “Dick Van Dyke” shows and of course his long running hit, “Diagnosis Murder.” He’s the ultimate showman and as overheard at the theater naming a few times a “class act.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Van Dyke is also known for his philanthropic efforts and advocacy for causes such as children’s health, civil rights and years of volunteering and serving Thanksgiving dinners at LA’s Midnight Mission. He’s been seen handing out cash at Malibu’s Community Labor Exchange.
TV personality Tom Bergeron said, “I have adored Dick Van Dyke since I was a kid and to be his friend now, to support causes that he supports like this endowment for the arts is like the cherry on the cake.”
Manchester commenting, “His legacy is so secure in giving back to young students and education.”
The theater naming celebration dazzled from opening remarks taped by Julie Andrews from her home in Switzerland to the finale with the legend himself taking the stage to sing some Van Dyke signature numbers. The audience was in awe engaged in a sing-a-long with the joyous entertainer leading the crowd in “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” a song about dreams, enjoying life to the fullest and keeping a child’s wonder at heart. The tune also proves a couple of Van Dyke quotes: “That rule about having to act one’s age? I just don’t buy it.”
And “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”
The Arlene and Dick Van Dyke Theater and their endowment is sure to keep young minds engaged, learning and dreaming for years to come.
“It’s extraordinary,” Alexander says, “that at this beautiful young age, that Dick, with Arlene’s love and support, is still such a citizen of our communities, of our world. He just keeps putting out amazing things with this joyful spirit.”

Malibu’s star culinary
reflects on winning the marathon cooking competition and balancing family life
By Samantha Bravo
Malibu’s culinary maestro, Chef Marcel Vigneron, has etched his name in the annals of cooking competitions as the victor of Food Network’s grueling “24 in 24.” This intense, 24-hour marathon is divided into eight episodes, each packed with unique culinary challenges. From the outset, contestants are tested on speed in the first three-hour segment. By the halfway mark, they’ve been cooking nonstop for 12 hours, with the pressure and complexity ramping up as the episodes progress. Vigneron, the executive chef and owner of WOLF, also boasts a coveted spot on Los Angeles Magazine’s Best New Restaurant list.
Reflecting on his experience, Vigneron shared, “I’d never actually done a competition like this one before. I’ve competed in ‘Top Chef,’ ‘Iron Chef,’ ‘Cutthroat Kitchen,’ ‘Guy's Grocery Games’—pretty much all the big cooking competitions out there. But this one, where you go back-to-back-to-back, I was kind of nervous about that. But I think it’s always good to be nervous because it means you genuinely care about what you’re doing.”
Cooking for more than 24 hours is no small feat, but Vigneron is no stranger to working under sleep-deprived conditions. “I’m a relatively new dad. I have my 3-year-old son Kingston, and so there were a lot of sleepless nights,” he explained. “I worked in Vegas for four years, and there were definitely some all-nighters there as well, so I had that under my belt and felt relatively confident.”
Vigneron’s culinary journey began early, cooking alongside his mother from the age of 15. Now 44, he reflects on decades of experience and passion. Recalling his early days, he says, “She used to take me to work with her, and I would sit on a sack of flour and watch her bake croissants that looked like swans and cream puffs, all sorts of different stuff,” Vigneron said. “I always thought it was so fascinating making stuff with her hands, and it was fun. My mom was my original catalyst that was the spark that ignited the fire that, it turned into my passion for cooking.”
Dinner is also Vigneron’s favorite meal, period. “I get super creative in the late afternoon, early evening and usually get a nice push of energy then as well,” he said. When asked about his favorite restaurant in Malibu, Vigneron’s choice was heartfelt and simple: home. “That’s a tough one, I think my house ... Home is my favorite restaurant,” he said.
Throughout the competition, Vigneron drew inspiration from his family. “I had them kind of inspiring me to do my best, and I was nervous, but I felt good,” he said. “When it comes down to the food and when I’m cooking in these competitions, it’s less of a competition for me, and it’s more of a mission to just do my personal best.”
In addition to his success on “24 in 24,” Vigneron was featured in “Selena Gomez + Chef,” a show where Gomez explores Los Angeles’ culinary scene. “She was such a nice, sweet, humble person; it just made it so much fun,” Vigneron said. “It’s always so refreshing to work with somebody like that.”
“
I think it’s always good to be nervous because it means you genuinely care about what you’re doing.”
Beyond his busy life as a dad, Vigneron is deeply involved with his family’s cookware line, Original Orgreenic. “We have a new line of knives that just came out and we’re doing a new set of pots and pans as well. That’s one of my big focuses right now,” he said. “I’m super proud of the knives; they’re absolutely incredible. That’s something that I’m super excited and proud of.”

From Coogies to Ollo
Malibu’s Culinary Gem Transforms Under Esteemed Restaurateur Antonio De Cicco
By Barbara Burke
For generations, Malibuites have enjoyed the fare served at the location where Ollo
Restaurant sits in Malibu Colony Plaza.
For 25 years, the location hosted Coogies, a popular breakfast and lunch venue. In 2015, Nate Heydari, who also owned Bui Sushi and Ollie’s Duck & Dive, re-conceptualized the eatery to feature California Cuisine with Italian and Mediterranean influences.
In January, the well-respected and well-liked restaurateur Antonio De Cicco acquired the space. He is best known for receiving a plethora of accolades when he operated Toscana in Brentwood and Toscanova in Calabasas. Now, his popular Noi Due Trattoria in Agoura Hills, which his son, Julian primarily manages now that DiCiccio operates Ollo, consistently receives laudatory reviews from cuisine critics.
As one enters Ollo these days, the art of local Eamon Harrington, whose works are quintessentially a la Malibu local, embraces him — the artist’s inspiring messages boldly painted on large pieces announce that all are welcome in this space. Ciao Bella! One of Harrington’s works warmly exclaims, immediately making locals and visitors feel most welcome.
Malibu Magazine sat down to chat with De Cicco about his highly acclaimed restaurant history and his dreams for Ollo.
“I am very fortunate to have trained under Sirio Maccioni, an icon of hospitality in New York and the illustrious chef, Daniel Boulud at Maccioni’s award-winning flagship French restaurant, the Le Cirque Restaurant located in the Mayfair Hotel.”
De Cicco noted that Maccioni’s unparalleled cuisine made Le Cirque a premiere destination in New York’s gastronomic landscape.
“The days of Le Cirque when I trained there were times when being a restaurateur was a very serious profession and waiters and maitre all had to speak a minimum of four languages,” De Cicco recalls, adding that his vision for Ollo is to create cuisine and ambiance that blends locals’ favorite fare with dishes that celebrate
his native Southern Italian cuisine, all while providing service par excellence that adheres to both Maccioni’s and Malibu’s impeccable quality standards.
“It’s been a dream of mine for 30 years to be in Malibu,” De Cicco explains. “I’m very proud of what they’ve done with this space in the past - the community considers this restaurant to be a special venue in town, and I am learning what pleases the locals as they embrace the new Ollo and we embrace them.”
De Cicco notes that he has a vision for the restaurant that respects input from both customers and long-time employees, such as Luis Loza, who has worked there for 32 years.
“Luis is my advisor as he knows all the customers, and he can help me make sure I respect their preferences.” De Cicco. “I know that things need to be done correctly here and that for many locals, they enter this space and think “I used to dine in that corner with my dad when he was alive,” or “we celebrated our anniversary at that table.”
“I enjoy being here every day, and I talk to everybody,” De Cicco shares, adding, “I feel the flare of Ollo, and it’s magic, and it is my challenge as a restaurateur to bring to this venue
the cuisine of Amalfi, with its fantastic, delicious simplicity, which starts with organic products and the best of the best in wild meat and prime fish. Further, it is of paramount importance that our team makes sure that people eat well and thoroughly enjoy their dining experience.”
De Cicco has introduced a menu for evening dining that emulates the cuisine of his native Southern Italy, dishes that derive from Capri and Ischia in the Napoli Bay to Positano on the Amalfi Coast, as well as the dishes derived from Toscanan cuisine.
“Diners in Southern California like simplicity in their dishes while also wanting fine presentation,” De Cicco states. “We have a lot of very sophisticated customers who have traveled extensively.”
He states that the Southern California coast “is a twin of the Amalfi coast, and my restaurant recognizes that by its menu featuring fine fare, including our special dishes curated by our fabulous chef, Davide Vedovello, who is from Milano.”

Celebrating of real estate mastery in Malibu 30 YEARS
By Hayley Mattson
Photography by Emily Scher
For three decades, Ani Dermenjian has been a cornerstone of the Malibu real estate scene, renowned for her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering passion. As she celebrates this milestone, Ani reflects on the journey that brought her here and the vibrant community she has helped shape over the years.
Ani’s journey into real estate was driven by her love for the beach, luxurious mansions, and fashion. Yet, it was her desire to make people’s
dreams come true that solidified her path. “After 30 years in the real estate business, my passion has only grown stronger. I truly love what I do,” Ani shares. Her dedication and enthusiasm have been the bedrock of her success in this challenging and ever-changing industry.
Her legacy is defined by her dedication to her clients, her community, and her family. To celebrate this milestone, we sat down with Ani to have her share her journey over the past 30 years, what she has learned, and what she envisions for the future.
Q&A with a Master Real Estate Agent
Ani, what initially drew you to a career in real estate, and what keeps you passionate about it after 30 years?
My love for the beach, luxurious mansions, and fashion has always been a part of me, but my greatest joy comes from making people’s dreams come true. After 30 years in the real estate business, my passion has only grown stronger. Because I truly love what I do, I embrace every challenge that comes my way. Real estate is a roller coaster, and without fullhearted dedication and the right motivations, survival isn’t possible.
How has Malibu changed since you first started?
Malibu has long been dedicated to preserving its natural beauty, rural character, wildlife, and open spaces. However, it’s changed over the years since I started; its population has grown and diversified. Natural disasters, most notably the Woolsey Fire, have also brought changes. We’ve witnessed an increase in development, with more commercial centers, luxury homes, gated communities, high-end restaurants, boutique shops, and rising tourism. Today, people visit Malibu not just for its stunning beaches and hiking trails but also for its entertainment, shopping, and dining experiences.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced over the years?
Not being a resident of Malibu, unfamiliar with its streets, and knowing no one were my biggest challenges in the first few years. However, I had a big dream to live and work in Malibu and succeed! My friend, “The Thomas Guide,” navigated and guided me around the area.
I joined numerous organizations as a volunteer to build rapport and cultivate a broad network of clients, colleagues, and industry professionals. It wasn’t an easy start, as I wasn’t initially welcomed
with open arms. Yet, believing in myself and following my dreams paved the way to success!
What are some of the most significant trends you’ve seen in the industry?
Some of the most significant trends I’ve observed in the industry over the last three decades include a growing interest among clients in living and working in rural areas, driven by the desire for more space and amenities. Another notable trend is the rise of the short-term rental market. Additionally, factors such as inflation and fluctuating interest rates have played significant roles. Most recently, there has been an increasing trend towards purchasing as co-ownerships, reflecting evolving preferences and economic realities in real estate.
How have home styles in Malibu changed over the years, and which ones have been your favorites?
Over the past three decades, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in home styles across Malibu. On the land side, we primarily saw one-story, laid-back ranch-style homes with spacious lots, often featuring horse facilities and occasionally tennis courts. There was also a surge in mid-century modern architecture characterized by large windows and a focus on simplicity and functionality. On the oceanfront, the predominant style was relaxed beach cottages, ideal for comfortable coastal living.
By the 1990s, modern and contemporary designs dominated, with extensive use of glass. Mediterranean and Spanish designs also became fashionable. I closely worked with Architects, Ed Niles, Jay Vanos, Vitus Mattare, Doug Burdge and sold few of their masterpieces.
Subsequently, we saw the rise of ultra-custom architectural masterpieces and many designed by renowned architects like Richard Neutra, John Lautner, Frank Gehry, and Richard
Landry. Currently, Farmhouse-style homes are highly sought after, featuring open layouts, rustic charm, and modern amenities. Personally, I have a particular fondness for the dramatic designs of John Lautner—concrete and glass structures that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living spaces, harnessing natural light and panoramic views while harmonizing with the natural landscape. Lautner’s visionary designs are both futuristic and timeless.
Architectural properties are my passion because they are a form of art, often reflecting the personality and lifestyle of their owners. Architects continually push boundaries to create unique and functional masterpieces that inspire awe.
What are the key factors that have contributed to your sustained success over three decades in the real estate industry?
The key factors that contributed to my success are a combination of several elements. Building a reputation for honesty, integrity, and transparency in dealings with clients and colleagues has been foundational. Embracing trends and maintaining continuous awareness of both local and global real estate markets has been crucial. Additionally, maintaining discipline, patience, and persistence through all types of real estate cycles has been essential. And last but not least, following your dreams, goals, and adhering to a well-defined business plan are indispensable for achieving success in this field.
You have given significant back to our community. What drives you to serve on boards and be of service?
Over the decades, my motivation to serve our beautiful community has evolved. Initially, it was about building relationships, networking, establishing trust, and growing my business through referrals. This journey has fostered my leadership skills, personal growth, and business acumen.
Today, my drive is focused on giving back, making a meaningful impact, and creating a lasting legacy beyond professional achievements. I deeply value the long-term relationships I have cultivated through volunteering and positively contributing to the community.
I'm proud to announce that this year marks the 25th Anniversary of our Malibu Veterans Day Public Ceremony. Since its inception, the event has drawn over 300 attendees who gather together to honor our beloved Veterans.
What motivates you to mentoring young students at Pepperdine, and what advice do you give them?
Being part of the Pepperdine Crest Board has allowed me to mentor numerous students, making meaningful impacts in their lives, many of whom I still keep in touch with today. More than just advising, my mentoring approach involves actively listening, providing support, leading by example, sharing my experiences, and encouraging them to learn and grow independently.
This mentorship has always been a reciprocal relationship, benefiting me as much as the students. I consider this time well invested and appreciate the opportunities it has provided. Thank you, Heidi Bernard.
Receiving the Women’s Leadership Lifetime Legacy Award is a significant achievement. How does it feel, and what does this honor mean to you?
Receiving the Women’s Leadership Lifetime Legacy Award holds special significance and is a humbling honor that continues to motivate me in my efforts to empower women, break barriers, and achieve high levels of leadership in both my professional and personal life. My hope is to inspire other women to believe in themselves and make a significant difference in the world.
What drives you to continue pushing forward during difficult times, both personally and professionally?
What drives me to continue pushing forward during difficult times in real estate is my marathon mindset. It’s about maintaining a strong commitment to not giving up, even when faced with challenges. I believe in maintaining a positive attitude, endurance, perseverance, focus, determination, and consistently setting goals in both marathon running and my real estate career.
Celebrating Milestones: Just as you celebrate crossing the finish line in a marathon, acknowledging and celebrating my achievements in real estate career boosts my morale and keeps me motivated.
Overcoming physical and mental challenges during marathons builds resilience, preparing me to handle setbacks and pressures in the competitive real estate market.
Similar to marathon running, enduring through challenges and persevering toward goals in real estate requires mental toughness and resilience.
Striking a healthy work-life balance between training for marathons and managing my real estate career fosters overall well-being, which enhances my performance in both areas.
Are there any upcoming plans or changes for your business that you’re excited about?
I don’t see myself moving brokerages as I feel honored to represent Douglas Elliman and am grateful to work under the leadership of Peter Hernandez. I have had the greatest mentors in my life and feel incredibly fortunate.
I have also had the most amazing assistants in my career, from whom I have learned a great deal and who have significantly contributed to my success.
I’m excited to expand “Team Ani” beyond just assistants by adding licensed realtors who share the same values and discipline. Together, we aim to increase our market share and provide exceptional service. I look forward to one day including my boys on my team as well.
What do you hope the next 30 years will bring for your business and for Malibu?
Over the next 30 years, I aim to continue helping clients and future generations achieve their dreams while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I am committed to mentoring future leaders in our industry and further prospering while building my lasting legacy in beautiful Malibu. I hope this remarkable place continues to turn my dreams into reality, as my slogan states: “Malibu… where dreams come true.”
What’s next for you in your personal life? Are there any new goals or projects you’re excited about?
I’m a dedicated dreamer and goalsetter, constantly pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Recently, I’ve
embarked on surf lessons and started running international marathons—I’ve already completed races in Africa and France, with plans to conquer the London Marathon by year-end, and ultimately, to run marathons on all seven continents.
Looking ahead, I’m eager to invest in higher education, expand my portfolio with more investment properties, and cherish meaningful moments with my loving husband of 34 years and our two teenage boys , who are our greatest blessings. I also have a strong desire to explore exotic destinations with my family, creating lasting memories together.
What is the legacy that you hope to leave behind?
My legacy is defined by my reputation. I strive to show my boys the significance of living purposefully and continually inspiring others. Each day, I aim to make positive impacts in people’s lives and assist them in achieving their goals. By leading through example, I seek to instill lasting character and values in my boys for the future.
What advice would you give to someone starting a real estate business in Malibu today?
Exciting opportunities in a unique and dynamic market are waiting for you—are you ready to conquer your niche?
Success in real estate requires persistence and the ability to overcome setbacks while keeping a positive attitude. Understanding your “why” is essential, particularly during tough times, as it fuels your passion and commitment. Make sure your reason is strong enough to keep you going.
Find a mentor and surround yourself with successful, top-producing agents. Focus on fundamental activities such as door knocking, prospecting, hosting open houses, attending caravans, participating in office meetings, and getting involved in local events.
Demonstrate your dedication by providing value to both clients and colleagues. Show that you are committed and ready to put in the necessary work. This approach will help you build a solid foundation for a successful career in real estate.

SThe Home and Legacy of TOM PETTY
Written by Judy Abel
itting just above the Pacific Coast Highway on a rare flat pad, beloved rocker Tom Petty’s Malibu home is an idyllic sanctuary that is now looking for its next chapter. The rock icon, known for hits like “Free Fallin’” and “American Girl,” wrote and recorded much of his celebrated music in this very residence, now being offered for sale at $19 million.
The late rock icon’s wife, Dana Petty, said their home was “Tommy’s haven… The sprawling land provided him solace from the prying eyes of fame, allowing him to immerse himself in nature’s embrace without inhibition.”
The Pettys purchased the sprawling property in 1998 and transformed it into a lush, tropical retreat with complete privacy. Ideal for entertaining, the home features a large flat lawn, fruit orchard, guest house, recording studio, two outdoor dining areas, a sport and pickleball court, separate staff quarters, a pool, and spa. At 8,744 square feet, “the house is spread out because it’s all one story,” says Pamela Van Ierland of Coldwell Banker Malibu, a 25-year family friend who holds the listing. “He wrote beautiful songs there. I recall he once wrote a song right off the cuff. For anybody else, it would be a hit. For him, it was a throwaway song! He was always writing, always creating music. He was amazing.”
The Mediterranean-style home was their “love nest,” according to Van Ierland. “That was their tranquility, and all of their joy was in that house. They used to tell me they couldn’t wait to get back home. They loved touring, but when they came home, it was a Valhalla for them. He didn’t ever want to leave the house. It was his sanctuary.” Dana explaining, “Our shared adventures on the road always circled back to one truth – there is no place quite like home. Amidst luxurious hotel stays and globetrotting escapades, home beckoned as the ultimate sanctuary where happiness blossomed effortlessly. For Tommy, home transcended mere walls; it embodied a perpetual vacation where contentment found its eternal abode.”
Petty filled the home with the sounds of his guitar, piano, and harmonica, with many of his good friends and fellow rock stars joining to make music together. Two of his dearest friends, fellow Traveling Wilbury members George Harrison and local Bob Dylan, frequently visited the home. Van Ierland spent many Thanksgivings at the property with the Pettys and his bandmates. On other occasions, she saw Jackson Browne and ELO founder and fellow Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne. Petty treasured his close friendships.
“He had a large separate recording studio and a music room in the house,” shares Van Ierland, who recalls, “Pretty much everything he wrote, unless he was on tour, was in that house the last 20 years, in the music room where he kept his piano.”
One memorable day, she was astonished to see Petty stroll into the kitchen strumming a banjo. When she asked Dana about it, Dana simply replied that Tom had just taken it up.
The home’s amenities are impressive, including five bedrooms, ten bathrooms, separate staff quarters, and an entire house generator to ensure continuous power during outages. All rooms are wired for sound. “There was always music playing,” Van Ierland says. Petty’s music studio, converted from a twobedroom guest house along with his primary office and bedroom suite, were his favorite retreats where he loved to watch westerns. The primary bedroom suite, which Petty personalized during the remodel, includes a stunning vintage marble fireplace, an office, gym, two bathrooms (one with another fireplace), a large walk-in closet, and a private walled courtyard. “It’s a retreat,” Van Ierland notes. “That suite was a refuge in the house.”
Petty’s imprint on the home is evident throughout. He designed the fireplace in the great room, the skylights, and the couple added dark mahogany floors. “Pretty much everything in the house, Dana and Tom did,” says Van Ierland of the design. “He chose everything. He was very hands-on.” That includes the separate guest quarters that Petty converted into a recording studio complete with rehearsal rooms and living area. Dana adds it was “where his creative spirit thrived within the walls of his cherished studio.”
The grounds of the property are lush and bountiful, creating a secluded feel. Spanning 2.6 flat acres, the property includes ponds, waterfalls, and babbling brooks, adding a magical touch to this paradise. On one side of the house is a long bougainvillea and vine-draped arbor. “It’s so cool,” Van Ierland describes. “It runs almost the whole length of the home. When you open a door to the outside, you don’t see another house. There are wall fountains with beautiful Mediterranean mosaic tiles. A lot of the doors that open to the outside have a fountain, so when you open the French doors, you hear the water cascading from a fountain.”
The Pettys often hosted dinner parties for friends at a long table under the arbor. Another outdoor dining and living area is located next to a guest wing, and the home even includes an aviary where the Pettys kept cockatiels.
The expansive lawn on the property was the site of Tom and Dana’s wedding ceremony. “It was a beautiful event,”
Van Ierland recalls. Rock and roll icon Little Richard officiated, adding to the property’s storied history. “It was their slice of heaven. That’s why they got married at the house,” Van Ierland says.
Despite his busy touring schedule, Petty maintained a tradition of dining at 5 o’clock after sound checks and before shows. The Pettys kept this cherished tradition alive in their Malibu home. Van Ierland adding, “The heart of that house is the kitchen. There were so many beautiful conversations and creativity. They adored that house. That’s why everybody came to them. There are a lot of good memories there.”
Tom Petty’s Malibu retreat, with its rich history and serene ambiance, resonates with his legacy. For the next fortunate owner, this home promises not just a place to live but a piece of rock and roll history and a sanctuary of their own. Dana adds, “It is time for another family to inscribe their own legacy upon Malibu and our home’s sacred grounds.
A Letter to Malibu...
Leaving behind the serene Pacific Palisades for the rugged beauty of Malibu was a bittersweet journey 26 years ago. Although our hearts were deeply connected to Tommy’s former abode, circumstances led us to discover a new haven in Malibu that resonated more with Tommy’s soul. The sprawling land provided him solace from the prying eyes of fame, allowing him to immerse himself in nature’s embrace without inhibition. It has a fruit orchard, and we added a basketball/pickleball court and a recording studio, making it the perfect haven for a musician with a young family.
Malibu, at that time, seemed like a distant sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, still exuding a free-spirited surfer charm. Every corner was adorned with quaint Mom and Pop shops where familiarity greeted us warmly, creating an enchanting aura we couldn’t resist. Our love for Malibu bloomed into ownership of multiple beach houses over the years, yet our hearts remained anchored to our cherished primary residence.
The decision to part ways with this beloved sanctuary after 26 years is laden with emotional weight. Reluctance seeps through every pore as memories intertwine with each stone and beam. The prospect of bidding farewell feels daunting, especially knowing that it had been Tommy’s refuge—where his creative spirit thrived within the walls of his cherished studio.
Our shared adventures on the road always circled back to one truth—there is no place quite like home. Amidst luxurious hotel stays and globetrotting escapades, home beckoned as the ultimate sanctuary where happiness blossomed effortlessly. For Tommy, home transcended mere walls; it embodied a perpetual vacation where contentment found its eternal abode.
From the echoes of our wedding vows officiated by Little Richard in our backyard to the heart-wrenching loss of my beloved Tommy within these very walls, every chapter etched into this house tells a poignant tale of love and loss. Our family and close friends spent every holiday with us; his brother and family flew out from Florida every Christmas. Music and laughter always filled our home as my son grapples with the inevitability of selling this treasured abode that cradled his upbringing, with community sports beginning with T-ball, where Tommy and I never missed a game. I am reminded that it is time for another family to inscribe their own legacy upon Malibu and our home’s sacred grounds.
Whoever becomes the steward of this hallowed space must possess not just an affinity but a deep reverence for its history and soulful essence. It beckons for someone who can honor its past while nurturing its future with boundless love - for this house deserves nothing less than absolute devotion.
Goodbye, Malibu, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the treasured memories.

Malibu Glass & Mirror
Streamlining Shower and Bath Purchasing Experiences
Written by Barbara Burke
As one approaches the showroom’s models of shiny, modern, frameless showers and customized LED mirrors, she can imagine what her new bath or shower will look like. Sleek and gorgeous, functional and fun, the showers and mirrors are made to fit a customer’s specifications.
Nestled in the middle of Malibu on Winter Canyon Road, Malibu Glass & Mirror is the city’s oldest commercial establishment. It consistently serves very satisfied new and repeat customers.
“We offer both frameless and more traditional showers—Our glass is custom-made to accommodate each customer’s needs, and the frames will perfectly fit within a client’s walls,” salesperson Maureen Pinnell explained. “We visit a customer’s home to take exact measurements.”
While meeting with a client, Pinnell or another staff member brings
samples of all parts of a shower so the client obtains exactly what they are dreaming of for their specific space.
“Our customers can choose all their hardware, so if they, for instance, desire a hinge-free beveled look, we can accomplish that,” Pinnell said. The highly customized service even includes letting clients select their hardware’s exact presentation, such as by coating it in certain colors.”
The result—is a contemporary look that seamlessly integrates into the space, yielding a modern, gorgeous presentation. Alternatively, should a client seek to create a space featuring a more traditional look, of course, Malibu Glass & Mirror can accommodate such a request.
“Further, we also offer step-in showers to accommodate folks who need that as well as offering wheelchair accessible bi-fold entrances to baths,” Pinnell added.
LED MIRRORS THAT REFLECT EXCELLENTLY ON A HOMEOWNER
Malibu Glass & Mirror offers mirrors of all dimensions. LED mirrors are currently all the trend, Pinnell notes, adding that the company helps customers design LED mirrors for their spaces in a smarter, more efficient fashion.
“Our customized LED mirrors are made in the United States, and the beauty of them—in addition to how they present spectacularly in a space—is that if they ever need any electrical servicing, it can easily be performed because the electrical components easily come off the vanity.” Pinnell explained, “Just like our showers, our mirrors can be designed to fit into any space.”
Beveled mirrors. Mirrors near sinks. Makeup and vanity mirrors. All are on offer at the showroom.
CUSTOMER SERVICE PAR EXCELLENCE
Consistently garnering wonderful compliments from delighted patrons, Malibu Glass & Mirror is known for its superb customer service.
“The suppliers whom we use all provide
excellent warranties,” Pinnell said. “However, customers are very delighted that we service our products even for years after they were purchased.”
Smiling cordially, she added, “Once you get a shower or mirror from us, you have us for life! That’s important, especially in the Malibu community, where it is sometimes difficult to get repair persons to come out to provide services.”
Doing business the old-fashioned way is sometimes, unfortunately, deemed passé by companies that merely focus on immediately profiting. However, Malibu Glass & Mirror has contributed to Malibu and been part of our business community since the 1970s, and it does business in a time-honored way—the staff is there for their customers, from the purchasing phase of the transaction to installation and even for years afterward.
Usually, the time it takes to receive installation after putting in an order is very competitive.
“Usually, it takes between three and four weeks to install showers and mirrors after our customer places an order,” Pinnell said. “Summer is our busiest season, so it might take a wee bit more than that. This has been a very busy summer!”
Proprietor Gerald Lemonnier chimed in, saying, “Our large showroom has much to offer, and it features the newest selection of shower and mirror displays." Lemonnier added, “We invite the community to come to view all of our products, and we have a full, experienced, helpful staff who will answer all of their questions.”
Malibu Glass & Mirror is always there for customers, whether they have a new construction project, are rebuilding after a fire, are remodeling, or are just updating a shower or bathroom. The company provides solutions for custom residential and commercial glass products, bathrooms, and mirrors.

CalCoast Glass Tinting Inc.
Enhance Comfort and Protect Your Home with 3M Window Films
Written by Barbara Burke and Hayley Mattson
When it comes to making your home more comfortable and protecting it from the sun’s harsh effects, CalCoast Glass Tinting Inc. offers a solution that brings both peace of mind and practical benefits. With CalCoast’s expert installation and genuine commitment to customer satisfaction, you can transform your home into a haven of comfort and energy efficiency, all while preserving the beauty of your interior spaces. Their high-quality 3M window films are designed not only to shield your home from excessive heat, glare, and harmful UV rays but also to enhance the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems.
Nathan Ponder, Director of Sales and LEED Accredited Professional at CalCoast Glass Tinting highlights the benefits of their 3M window films, stating, “Our 3M window film eliminates 99.9 percent of ultraviolet rays from penetrating into interiors, significantly lowering customers’ energy bills. It also reduces hot spots, which increases the efficiency of an air conditioner in the summer and a heater in the winter.” Ponder emphasizes that customers can enjoy an unobstructed, beautiful view of the outdoors while simultaneously protecting their homes from the effects of heat and glare.
Beyond energy efficiency, another critical advantage of installing 3M window films is the significant reduction in furniture and fabric fading. Ponder explains, “There are multiple factors that contribute to fabric fading. About 10 percent is caused by the fabric’s colors and materials, 25 percent by visible light, another 25 percent by heat, and the remaining 40 percent by UV rays. Our 3M window films can mitigate 90 percent of the factors responsible for causing furniture and fabric fade, ensuring that your interior décor maintains its vibrant appearance for much longer.”
When it comes to installation, Ponder advises homeowners to prioritize applying window films to windows that receive the most sunlight, particularly those with south and western exposures. These areas are most susceptible to the sun’s radiance and thermal effects, which can significantly impact the indoor climate. In contrast, windows facing north generally do not require film, as they are less affected by these factors. CalCoast applies window film to all levels of a home, ensuring comprehensive coverage and protection.
The superior service provided by CalCoast Glass Tinting has consistently earned praise from customers. Jeanne Cox, a satisfied
client, shared her experience, stating, “Working with Nathan at CalCoast Glass Tinting was a dream come true! Nathan not only has wonderful products that he explains in appropriate detail, but he also personally stands behind them and provides the ultimate in customer service—we love the tinting we did in our living room.” Cox was particularly impressed by Ponder’s responsiveness and attention to detail. “Nathan responded to our initial call immediately and measured all our windows, even though we weren’t ready at the time. He kept the information on file and returned when we called— he ultimately completed the windows we chose to tint that same week!”
Regarding the installation process, Ponder reassures homeowners that it is straightforward and minimally invasive. “Installation of the window films is fairly painless, and there are no concerns regarding any smells or off-gassing of chemicals,” he says. The films are [typically] installed from the inside of the windows, ensuring a seamless application. For maintenance, Ponder recommends using common washing solutions, including ammoniabased products, starting thirty days after installation. He advises against using abrasive cleaning agents or bristle brushes, as they could scratch the film. Instead, synthetic sponges, squeegees, or soft cloths are recommended for cleaning. To further enhance customer satisfaction, all [interior] 3M window films come with a robust lifetime warranty, ensuring longlasting performance and protection.
CalCoast Glass Tinting’s dedication to quality, customer satisfaction, and expert installation makes them the top choice for homeowners looking to enhance the comfort, efficiency, and longevity of their living spaces. By investing in 3M window films, customers can effectively protect their homes from the negative effects of heat and glare, safeguard their furnishings, and enjoy clearer, more comfortable interiors for years to come. Whether you are seeking to reduce energy costs, protect your décor, or simply create a more comfortable environment, the team at CalCoast Glass Tinting Inc. offers a comprehensive solution that meets your needs.

In 1963, Shirley Maclaine, with her husband, Steve Parker, worked with Cliff May to build a 6-unit apartment building. Shirley lived in the top floor of the building and would rent out the lower floor apartments. She sold the building she had built in 1997, retaining a unit in the building. Around 2000, the apartments were converted to condominiums, and sold off as individual units. Shirley continued to live and utilize one of the units as her office until 2003, when she sold her last piece of the building. Shirley still resides in Malibu to this day, splitting time between there and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

VILLA NOON IN SOTOGRANDE, SPAIN
A Commitment to Zero Water & Electricity Consumption
Sotogrande Unveils Villa Noon, Spain’s First Zero Emissions Luxury Villa Redefining Real Estate Sustainability and Efficiency Standards
Sotogrande, Cork Oak Mansion we are now proudly announced a groundbreaking achievement in sustainable architecture: the creation of Villa Noon, the world’s first villa integrating a water collection system for domestic use, setting new standards for sustainability and efficiency.
Situated in the exclusive ‘The 15’ community within La Reserva de Sotogrande, Villa Noon is a unique example of real estate innovation, operating entirely off-grid from conventional water and electricity networks. This pioneering villa embodies advanced self-sufficiency technologies, ensuring an unparalleled eco-friendly living experience.
Designed by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, Villa Noon epitomises sophisticated sustainability. Its cylindrical volumes gracefully follow the natural terrain, while a stone façade seamlessly blends with the landscape, offering breathtaking panoramic views of La Reserva, its private beach (The Beach), the Mediterranean Sea, and the northern coast of Africa. Since its inception by Joseph McMicking in 1962, Sotogrande has evolved into one of Europe’s most coveted estates, combining pristine natural beauty with first-class amenities and an unrivalled lifestyle.
The “Villa Zero” concept, exemplified by Villa Noon, revolutionizes modern living with homes that achieve complete energy and water self-sufficiency. An integrated system captures rainwater for domestic use, while surplus electricity generated on-site powers the production of potable water from atmosphere humidity, significantly reducing the use of network water and costs.
“This revolutionary design meets the stringent criteria of a Passive House, standing out for its ability to operate completely selfsufficiently, independent of conventional utility networks thanks to its exceptional energy efficiency”, explains the architect Fran Silvestre emphasizing that this will be “the future of luxury living”.
Incorporating native, low-water-demand plants and efficient irrigation systems, the landscape architecture aligns with sustainability principles, featuring rainwater harvesting and green roofs to regulate soil temperature and reduce evaporation. This design, meeting passive house standards, ensures minimal ecological impact and exceptional energy efficiency, providing unparalleled comfort and state-of-the-art amenities.
Villa Noon’s architecture celebrates the synergy between construction and nature. From the highest point of the plot, a water-featured patio invites residents to enjoy erene moments. An exterior staircase leads to a circular patio housing the rooms, while the lower level accommodates day spaces like the kitchen, dining room, living room, and an indoor spa, all designed to maximize natural connectivity.
At street level, functional yet aesthetic garage accesses blend seamlessly into the harmonious design, respecting the natural topography and enhancing the living experience.
“The villa is built into the hillside to minimise its impact on the landscape. Our goal was to create a design that blends more with nature rather than traditional architecture. The circular shapes not only draw inspiration from the natural environment but also allow us to orient the house towards the most captivating views, making it a pivot that directs each segment optimally.” explains Spanish Architect Fran Silvestre.
