Clementine Cupcake Company is located at 22720 El Camino Real Suite “A” in Santa Margarita By SIMONE SMITH For The Atascadero News
SANTA MARGARITA — Is it true that if a person likes sweets, their personality reflects their taste preference? True or not, Santa Margarita has gotten a little bit sweeter with the addition of Clementine Cupcake Company. Santa Margarita was first introduced to Clementine’s delicious cupcakes and cookies a few years ago when a selection was offered for sale at Caliwala’s Market and Deli. An ever-changing parade of deliciousness was there, ready to be snapped up. Baked with all-natural, fresh, pure, organic, and locally sourced ingredients with options of gluten and dairyfree, Clementine’s cupcakes and cookies were not too sweet but oh so beautifully perfect. If you were lucky, sometimes an end-of-the-day surprise of extras would even show up in the Community Share Box. Yum! What a way to make someone’s day and put a smile on their face. I got the chance recently to speak to Kari Freitas, the owner of Clementine Cupcake Company, at her new physical location off the parking lot, next to Ancient Peaks Winery at 22720 El Camino Real Suite “A” in Santa Margarita, to learn more about her business. Although Freitas has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and no formal training in baking, she was ready for a career change to something a little lighter that didn’t continue to occupy her mind after the workday ended. A mother of two young girls, she was CONTINUED ON PAGE A14

SANTA MARGARITA — Beloved Santa Margarita resident and World War II Veteran Henry Barba passed away on Dec. 24 at the age of 108. It was his 81st wedding anniversary with his late wife, Jesse. Barba was born on Oct. 19, 1913, in a home that still stands in Santa Margarita. But for the first two weeks of his life, he was known as Everett until his mother changed her mind. Barba’s parents were Mauricio Barba of San Luis Obispo and Catherine Walters of Arroyo Grande. The two married and built their home in Santa Margarita on five acres in 1900. Henry Barba was one of seven surviving children. His parents buried six children, including Henry’s twin sister Henrietta who died during infancy. Like most in the area at the time, Barba grew up farming and ranching. As a young child, Barba worked on the Santa Margarita Ranch. He helped Freddy Higuera (yes, the same family as Higuera Street in SLO) put leather collars on the 10 and 20 mule teams, which pulled the harvesters. And in 1936, Barba, his cousin Juaquin Miller and a friend filled a large barn (also still standing) to the top with hay. That’s a successful hay season! Barba met his future wife, Jesse Hampton, when they were kids. Jesse’s family owned a large ranch near the Riconada Mine. Being six years Jesse’s senior, Barba would joke with her brother that one day he would marry Jesse, take over the family ranch, and throw the rest of the family off it! Barba did end up marrying Jesse, but instead of taking the family ranch, they had

Atascadero Middle School Basketball Team Go Undefeated! The Saints completed their season with a score of 18-0

ATASCADERO — Last year, Atascadero High School’s Varsity Basketball team had a fantastic season, which led them all the way to CIF for the first time since 1974. Sadly, the team did not come home with the championship, but it isn’t stopping them from going for the big win this year! “It was an incredible experience [making it to CIF last year]. We didn’t even know if we were going to have a season. When we got the “go ahead” to start practicing, we were only allowed to practice outside due to those past Covid-19 protocols, and so we were practicing outside on the blacktop. Putting in the extra work definitely paid off in the long run and, I think, gave us an edge going into the postseason. Our goal was to win The Ocean League and get a few wins in CIF, so it definitely felt like we overachieved, which is a great feeling even though we didn’t win it all,” said Head Coach, Augie Johnston. “It [not winning] was a tough pill to swallow since we had the home advantage and still didn’t pull it off in the end, but at this point, it’s water under the bridge, and it was huge for the future of our program.” Johnston played for Atascadero High back in the

early 2000s, where his love for the sport grew. “I graduated in 2004. I played for Jerry Tamelier, and we had a good team back then that won the Pac 5 league and had a 22-3 record,” he reminisced. “I wanted to stay around the game and continue to promote the game of basketball in my hometown. I want to see kids have the same experiences I had in high school and grow as leaders through athletics,” he said about coming back to coach. This year, The Greyhounds are back and stronger than ever, and they have the CIF Championship in their sights. The varsity team is comprised of seven seniors who’ve been playing the game together for six years, give or take. And the junior class is just as strong. Together, they create a super competitive team. “I’ve known them all [the seven seniors] since they were young.
They should all give themselves a lot of credit because each one of them has dedicated themselves to the game of basketball since I’ve known them. They are the type to get in the weight room or out of the court to work on their game in their free time. They have a huge support system in their parents, and they all are exceptional student-athletes. They’ve been playing together for so long that they have a chemistry on the court that you can’t teach,” Johnston continued. While The Grayhouds played in The Ocean League last year, they’ve moved up to The Mountain League this year, which gives them an extra advantage going into CIF, as they will be playing much tougher competition as they go along. “It was an honor to be selected to play in the Mountain League, but it brings a lot of new chal-
lenges to our team and season. Every game will be highly competitive. But, it will help us as we go into CIF this year as the strength of your schedule matters when being ranked. We want to get some big wins against good teams and feel good about how we’re playing, and the rest will take care of itself,” concluded Johnston. This year’s team is made up of seniors Kaiden Abma, Logan Reyes, Michael Porter, Riley Coalwell, Levi Meeks, Jarren Fischer, Steven Waiters. And juniors Max Bagby, Noah Abma, CJ Bell, Logan Daves, Corban Rossi, and Benjamin Strohl. “We have 13 very good players. I feel like we have a healthy competitive environment where our Juniors respect our Seniors, and our Seniors respect our Juniors,” said Johnston. The CIFs start mid-February.
ATASCADERO — Atascadero’s Middle School basketball team, the Saints, completed their season with a score of 18-0. Sweeping wins out all of their league games and also winning the two tournaments that they competed in. Their undefeated season ended on Saturday, Dec. 18, with the Bill Harvey Memorial (Laguna) Tournament. The Tournament ran Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. “Going into the Laguna [Bill Harvey Memorial] Tournament, the end of the season tournament, we were undefeated still, and everybody told us that Laguna was the team to beat. Everybody said it would be Laguna against Atascadero, and it ended up being that,” said Head Coach, Brad Ernst. “I really wanted the boys to finish out the season strong because it would have been a little bit tough to watch them, you know, after a great season, lose the very last game. They did it [won]! I was proud of them for achieving that. A perfect season. It’s not easy.” The final score of the season at the Bill Harvey Memorial (Laguna) Tournament was 48 to 37. Giving The Saints a clean sweep. “It was a fantastic year. I was very, very proud of the boys. The work they put in,” added Ernst. The Saint’s played a total of two tournaments, including The Flamson Tournament earlier in the season. “We play probably about four games, and then we played the Flamson Tour-
nament, that was four games in two days. We took all four of those. We got a trophy for that one,” Ernst said excitedly. The team also participated in league games against Templeton Middle School, Lewis Middle School, Flamson Middle School, and Los Osos Middle School. Winning each and every game. “We started off pretty good, there was one rough game against Templeton that was very close, and it could have gone either way. After that Templeton game, the boys just flipped a switch,” continued Coach Ernst. “Our defense was spectacular.” The team is made up of 14 boys. And together, under the coaching of Ernst, and his assistant Coach, Sid Rodriguez, they remained undefeated at the end of the season. Those players are: Kason Betchard (#21), Braden Cady (#1), Logan Clevenger (#9), Isaac Dia (#8), Steven Ernst (#24), Jeremy Hendricks (#29), Damian Marano (#7), Dylan Martini (#35), Logan Missler (#5), Isaiah Rodriguez (#2), Skyler Tucker (#25), Lucas Vance (#32), Evan Warner (#3), and Weston Witt (#42). “Our plan is for them [the team] to, obviously, get prepared to play in High School basketball. We took on 14 kids, knowing that playing time was going to be somewhat limited for some of them, but we saw great potential in them. So, we wanted to prepare them and get them ready for playing future basketball at the high school for the next four years. That’s our plan. I would very much assume that all of them will play. I sure hope so; I sure hope all of them will continue to play,” concluded Ernst. Congratulations to The Saints for their undefeated season!

18 Years Since San Simeon Earthquake The earthquake struck on Dec. 22 at 11:15 a.m. and took the lives of two local women By CAMILLE DEVAUL
PASO ROBLES - Where were you 18 years ago on Dec. 22 at 11:15 a.m.? If you were in the Paso Robles area, then you were feeling the wrath of the San Simeon Earthquake of 2003. The 6.5 magnitude earthquake ripped through the Central Coast, with Paso Robles being the epicenter of the quake’s damage. Two sulfur hot springs erupted, one behind the Paso Robles City Library and another off the Paso Robles Street exit, creating the “rotten eggs” era of Paso Robles. More considerable damage was done to the original brick buildings of the City, some more than a century old. The infamous Acron Building on Park and 12th Street collapsed, taking the lives of two women, Jennifer Murick (19) of
Atascadero and Marilyn Zafuto (55). The earthquake could be felt all the way in Los Angeles, and damage to buildings was seen throughout the county. The San Miguel Mission had $15 million worth of damage, and extensive damage was caused to the George H. Flamson Middle School. In Templeton, the 110-year-old Bethel Lutheran Church sustained major damage, and the apse had to be rebuilt. Then California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger took time to visit Paso Robles and tour the damage done by the quake and pay his respects to the victims. Sergeant Tod Rehner previously reflected on the days following the quake on its 16th anniversary. “I was off duty when the earthquake started. I remember that it started as a slow roller but then kept going as it increased in intensity. When the ground really began to shake, pictures started falling off the walls, and the intensity of the ‘quake grew even stronger. After what seemed like minutes,

the rumbling stopped. Our pool in the backyard had three-foot-high waves that were crashing outside of the pool. Luckily, we received zero damage to our house. Once we were okay, I immediately went to work with my K9, Yasko. The devastation was apparent just driving into work. Buildings were damaged, debris was in the streets, no power anywhere. The Downtown area looked like a war zone. There were several buildings that had partially collapsed,

the clock strikes midnight in Turkey. If you’re into sipping on bubbly, which is a classic New Year’s Eve tradition, have your friends over and set up a champagne bar. Taste test as many varieties as you can find. Fancy champagne, fivebuck-chuck champagne, cocktails featuring champagne. The sky’s the limit. And if you’re feeling fearless, write your wishes down on a piece of paper, burn them over a candle flame and then drink the ashes in a glass of champagne like they do in Russia. (Disclaimer: please do not drink wish ashes in champagne.) Or for something a little less aggressive, celebrate with an indoor campground. Grab the kids (or not) and build the biggest pillow fort you’ve ever seen. Cuddle up with your favorite people and sip on drinks while watching When Harry Met Sally or playing your favorite board games. And for all the people who love to cook at any time of the day, what about celebrating with a midnight brunch. There’s nothing better than breakfast for dinner, and if you’re eating at midnight, it’s the perfect
crossover meal. Plus, there’s nothing better to soak all that bubbly up with than a stack of pancakes. And when you’re done with midnight brunch, you can always throw your plates at your friend’s and neighbor’s front doors, like they do in Denmark. The story goes that the bigger the pile of broken dishes on your doorstep, the more luck you will have in the coming year. But you should probably just wash them. Then, if you need an icebreaker to get into the New Year, there is always the Polar Bear Plunge! Daredevils across the world have taken to rushing into the nearest body of water and taking a dip on New Year’s Day. The first documented plunge took place in 1904 in Dorchester Bay, Massachusetts. Jan. 1, 2022, is the 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge in Avila Beach. If you’re interested in taking the plunge, meet on the East side of the Avila pier at 11:30 a.m. and remember, “Be Bold, Get Cold!” So whether you’re hitting up the local bar scene, going to a fancy party, heading to the movies, or staying in with the people you love the most, have a very Happy New Year!

That was one reason why we stayed in the area all day and all night. We huddled at a few fold-up tables with a propane heater for warmth, as

Volunteers at Twin Cities are a vital part of the hospital
By CHRISTIANNA MARKS
ATASCADERO — Whether you’re headed out on the town, or you’re planning on staying in, there are plenty of fun ways to ring in the New Year in the North County! For instance, if you’re a single girl, you might want to sleep with your leftover Christmas mistletoe under your pillow on New Year’s Eve, which is a tradition that comes out of Ireland. If you sleep with the plant, it’s supposed to help you find the man of your dreams. But if you’re not sleepy and looking for something to do locally while getting out of the house, see a late-night movie! Pick your favorite local theater, and watch a film that’s over around midnight. It’ll keep you entertained and awake as you wait for 2022 to start. If staying up until midnight isn’t your thing, how about celebrating New Year’s Eve all day long? Or Old Year’s Night, which is what it’s sometimes called in England. Pick a couple of countries in different time zones and celebrate like they do throughout the day. Drink champagne and eat 12 raisins (one for each month of the year) while making wishes like they do in Portugal. Sprinkle salt on your doorstep to promote peace and prosperity as soon as
and the parked cars had been crushed by the falling debris. Yasko and I were deployed to the Downtown area for security as PRFD was already searching the buildings for trapped citizens and casualties. It was surreal to see the buildings that were there hours ago now reduced to huge piles of bricks. That morning was the start of rotating 12-hour shifts for the entire department. The City fenced off the entire downtown

But, some sunshine is expected to come our way just in time for the New Year. COVID UPDATE
COVID-19 Pop-Up Rapid Testing Event in Atascadero
CDC shortens recommended time of isolation for public STAFF REPORT
SAN LUIS OBIPSO — The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department reported seven additional cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday, Dec. 29. SLO County has added 659 new cases of COVID-19 over the last week, with 21 residents in the hospital, including eight people in the intensive care unit. Officials say it is likely that additional cases of the Omicron variant are in SLO County; only a small percentage of cases are sampled to determine their strain. “Omicron is here in our community, and we know it spreads more quickly and easily than any strain of COVID-19 we have seen so far,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “We have the tools and resources to slow its spread: vaccines, boosters, and masking up in indoor public spaces. If you feel sick, even a little bit, the best thing to do is to get tested and stay home.” Masking is required in indoor
public places in San Luis Obispo County and statewide. Vaccines— both boosters and primary series—are available at no cost at pharmacies, doctors’ offices, Public Health Department clinics, and mobile clinics countywide. On Thursday, Dec. 30 the county will host a COVID-19 Pop-Up Rapid Testing Event for community members to receive a free COVID-19 rapid test before New Year’s Eve. Rapid antigen tests will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Atascadero Lake Park Pavilion Community Room. (No tests will be conducted between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to accommodate staff lunchtime.) Approximately 150 tests will be provided on a first-come, firstserve basis to those age two and older. Those under the age of 18 will need consent from a parent or guardian. “It’s a good idea to get tested before any gathering, especially as we see cases increase, to ensure that everyone is as safe as possible,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “Those who test positive will know they should isolate and protect their loved ones from COVID-19.” No appointments will be taken for the event. If demand is high, it
is possible that some residents may need to wait in line outside. It is recommended to dress accordingly and wear layers to be prepared for inclement weather. Free testing is also available by appointment at community testing sites in Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, and San Luis Obispo, with results generally available in about two days. Earlier this week, on Dec. 26, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that due to current reports on COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, they are shortening the recommended time for isolation for the public. People with COVID-19 should now isolate for five days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), follow that by five days of wearing a mask when around others to minimize the risk of infecting people they encounter. The CDC states that the change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to the onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Additionally, the CDC is updat-

Damian Nord Named New Paso Robles Police Chief
Chief Nord previously served as a PRPD officer in 2007 STAFF REPORT
PASO ROBLES - The City of Paso Robles has announced the appointment of a new Police Chief, Damian Nord. Chief Nord assumed his new position with the City on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Chief Nord was selected after a competitive nationwide recruitment process with over 20 plus applicants. His predecessor, Ty Lewis, left some big shoes to fill in the department after taking the position as City Manager in August 2021. Lewis has been with the City of Paso Robles for nearly 20 years, serving in every rank and various assignments with the Police Department. During his time with the City, Lewis led several initiatives to support community safety and the quality of life for Paso Roblans, including: • Increasing the number of allocated sworn police officers, dispatchers, and support services personnel to all-time highs • Helping lead the community through the health, legal, and economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic • Establishing the City’s first Community Action Team to better address mental health, drug and alcohol dependence, and homelessness within the community
• Protecting and leading the community through a multi-day active shooter event • Providing safety during civil unrest and protests while also respecting the diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns of the community • Modernizing the City’s emergency communications and computer infrastructures During the Nov. 16 City Council meeting, Lewis informed Council that a new Police Chief would be in place by the end of the year. And deliver on that promise he did. Chief Nord began his career with the Kern County Sheriff ’s Office in 1998 as a Detention Deputy, later promoted to Deputy Sheriff in 2001. Chief Nord worked his way through the ranks serving as a Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Commander, and most recently as a Chief Deputy in charge of the Investigations and Detentions Bureaus. Chief Nord also has prior local experience, having worked for the City of Paso Robles as a Police Officer in 2007. Nord holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Management and attended the Executive Leadership Program at USC Price School of Public Policy. “I’m excited the city was able to recruit a top-notch Police Chief like Damian Nord,” said City Manager Ty Lewis, “Chief Nord brings a wealth of experience, strong character, and positive energy to our community. Chief Nord’s proven ability to effectively work with diverse communities, like Paso Robles, will serve us well.” Chief Nord is replacing Interim Police Chief Stephen Lampe, who retires at the end of the year. Chief Nord is in the process of relocating to Paso Robles from Bakersfield. “I am honored to be joining the City of Paso Robles and a team of talented professionals,” says Chief Nord. “I look forward to working with everyone to keep the city safe, build trust and strong partnerships throughout the community.”
ing the recommended quarantine period for anyone in the general public who is exposed to COVID19. For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than two months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for five days followed by strict mask use for an additional five days. Alternatively, if a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, it is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for ten days after exposure. Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure but should wear a mask for ten days after the exposure. For all those exposed, best practice would also include a test for SARS-CoV-2 at day five after exposure. If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19. According to the CDC isolation relates to behavior after a confirmed infection. Isolation for five days followed by wearing a well-fitting mask will minimize the risk of spreading the virus to others. Quarantine refers to the time following exposure to the
virus or close contact with someone known to have COVID-19. Both updates come as the Omicron variant continues to spread throughout the U.S. and reflects the current science on when and for how long a person is maximally infectious. These recommendations do not supersede state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, nor do they apply to healthcare workers for whom CDC has updated guidance. Data from South Africa and the United Kingdom demonstrate that vaccine effectiveness against infection for two doses of an mRNA vaccine is approximately 35 percent. A COVID19 vaccine booster dose restores vaccine effectiveness against infection to 75 percent. COVID19 vaccination decreases the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. CDC strongly encourages COVID-19 vaccination for everyone five and older and boosters for everyone 16 and older. For updates on COVID-19 in SLO County, visit slopublichealth. org/COVID19 or call the recorded Public Health Information Line at (805) 788-2903. Phone assistance is available at (805) 781-5500 Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Judge Sentences Vance to 30 Years Additional sentencing includes lifetime sex offender registration STAFF REPORT
SAN MIGUEL — District Attorney Dan Dow announced that David Avis Vance of San Miguel was sentenced to 30 years in state prison for sexually abusing four minors. District Attorney Dan Dow announced that San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Jacquelyn Duffy has sentenced David Avis Vance (57) of San Miguel to serve 30-years in state prison for his conviction on twelve felony counts of committing lewd acts on a child, involving four separate victims. He was also ordered to regis-
ter as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. Vance was convicted based on his June 20 plea of no contest. The crimes occurred between January 1995 and October 2019 and involved four separate victims ranging in age from 5 to 13 years old at the time of the abuse. “Sexual crimes against children are devastating to the victims, especially when a predatory adult betrays their position of trust over the victim,” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “Sexual predators must receive strong punishment to reflect the longstanding pain and suffering their acts inflict on innocent children and to deter others from committing similar horrible crimes. We are grateful for the courage these young
GOVERNMENT
survivors displayed by reporting the abuse and assisting in the legal process necessary to hold this predator accountable.” At the sentencing hearing, several victims provided statements to the court describing the impact of Vance’s crimes. The mother of two of the young survivors described them as “heroes” for having the courage necessary to report the abuse. Judge Jacquelyn Duffy likewise expressed admiration for the young victims’ courage through the process. This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Melissa Chabra and was investigated by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office with the aid of the District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation.

New Year’s Resolutions for Everyone Affected by Cancer CANDICE SANDERS Executive Director
Cancer Support Community Central Coast
H
ere at the Cancer Support Community – California Central Coast, we all want to wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season and a bright New Year! With 2022 now here, we want to share a few possible New Year’s resolutions for everyone affected by cancer. They might not all apply to you, depending on where you are in your experience. But we hope they offer a reminder that you are not alone on your journey. CSC-CCC is here for you. Resolution #1: Become an advocate for yourself. Making treatment decisions for yourself or with a loved one can be overwhelming if you have no medical background. At CSC-CCC, we provide several ways to bridge this divide. Our Learn About Cancer Types guides, available at our Templeton office, are set up to help you learn the basics about your form of cancer. You can also call our Cancer Support Helpline, which provides free navigation for cancer patients or their loved ones. The Cancer Support Helpline is staffed by counselors and resource specialists who can help you get answers to some of your questions so that you can arrive at your next doctor’s appointment more prepared to make the best decisions you can. If you would like to reach out to the Helpline, please call (888)7939355. Resolution #2: Stay as healthy as you can. Whether you’re receiving treatment now or in recovery, nutrition and physical activity are important ways to stay as strong as possible. Staying in shape can help minimize side effects of treatment and may even help prevent recurrence. Explore Cancer Support Community’s Virtual Kitchen (cancersupportcommunity.org/ virtual-programs), where you’ll find cooking videos and healthy recipes specifically created to support the nutritional needs of people impacted by cancer. Exercise can also play a vital role in your overall well-being—and it doesn’t need to be strenuous.

Making a Difference Every Day for the Youth in Our Community
Taking a walk, bicycling, or practicing yoga are all great ways to achieve the physical and mental benefits of exercise. We offer Therapeutic Yoga and Tai Chi Chih classes to help improve your mental and physical well-being. Check out our calendar at cscslo. org for class times. Chemotherapy and cancer treatments can cause a loss of strength and mobility. Cancer Well-Fit is a free, small-group, 10-week exercise program we offer in partnership with Paso Robles Sports Club to help restore strength and endurance at each participant’s own pace. If you or someone you know is interested in registering for Cancer WellFit, please contact Kathy Thomas at Paso Robles Sports Club at (805)610-6486. Resolution #3: Build a community online or in-person. Sometimes the hardest part of one’s cancer journey can be trying to do it all alone. Cancer Support Community’s MyLifeLine’s Friends & Family Sites exist to easily connect cancer patients and caregivers with friends, family members, and others in their support network. As a free service offered by CSC-CCC, MyLifeLine allows you to create your own private support website. Here, you can document your journey and receive social, emotional, and practical support along the way. Having this kind of support reduces stress, anxiety, and isolation. MyLifeLine also features 13 different discussion boards, from Living with Breast Cancer to Caregiver Support. These discussion boards provide a safe space to connect with others like you, share your own cancer experiences, and offer insights, coping strategies, and inspiration. Visit mylifeline. org to get started. Joining one of our support groups or participating in our social activities is another way to build your emotional support and to decrease the feelings of isolation. Please contact us at (805)238-4411 or email programs@cscslo.org to get more information about our various programs. Not feeling up to making any resolutions? That’s fine, too. Living with cancer or being a caregiver to someone with cancer can be a full-time job. The most important thing you can do is focus on yourself and your loved ones in the new year.

18 Years Since San Simeon Earthquake Where were you when the earthquake hit? The following are comments left on our social media by locals recalling their moments
I
was working at MCB on Park Street, right next door to McClintock’s.....Few doors down from Ann’s Dress Store!! Thank God our building had just been retrofitted few months before...We were all safe!!! That’s a Day I will Never forget!! Marjorie Clark
I
was gathering up my almost 2 yr old to take her brother downtown to meet his friend for a movie. After the earthquake, my son asked if he could still go to the movies. He didn’t understand what had just happened. Or how bad it was. I spent the rest of the day cleaning up the mess the quake had made. And trying to get a hold of my husband that was working in Cambria at the time. Janet Turpin Marcotte
I
was inside a nail salon right next to Anderson’s Barber Shop in SLO. I’ll never forget it. Ran outside the building and saw the street pavement rolling like waves and the light poles swaying. Sara Berry

few days before my 18th birthday. I was downtown working my shift at Panolivo at 13th and park. Everything went really still and silent for just a second then the shaking happened and people fell to the ground. I could see bricks falling from the building across the street and the pavement rolling. A co worker grabbed me just as a tall antique French hutch was falling and held me in the doorway of the kitchen. It shook and shook some more. Once it stopped Another coworker and I ran down towards 12th street and park and were trying to grab bricks off one particular car because we could see part of an infant carseat. Moments later a fire/police officers were rushing us off because of an exposed gas line. It was total mayhem. The streets were littered with brick and debris. ad just cleaned my house and finished decorating the Christmas tree (Templeton). My thoughts: should I vacuum or go to the store to get Christmas groceries? I decided to vacuum. Within seconds, the earthquake hit. Everything was falling over and breaking. Two speakers up above on a secure ledge in the living room flew across the room. Plants fell from the ledge, broke ... dirt all over the carpet. My whole house was a disaster. That earthquake really scared me! Pam Baima

was in Atascadero’s City Hall. I’m sure none of us who were there that day will forget! I was also in the Loma Prieta quake in the Bay Area in ‘89. San Simeon made a bigger impression on me. I still think of the lives sadly lost in Paso that day. Kim Lacey remember it well. Left my 2 boys at home while I went to Vons. I barely got out of the store when it started. I did everything you shouldn’t do, I dashed out of the building I called my boys on my cell phone and they said they stood in the doorway were okay and btw Santa’s in the toilet. Apparently my Santa figurine in the bathroom fell into the open toilet! Gail Mitchell Seminara

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. he holidays are always busy days for us, but we love this time of the year. The rain certainly added another dimension to our celebrating. I had to look through the closets to find my old reliable red rain jacket with the hood before I felt ready to face the elements. John and I shared Christmas Eve in Paso Robles with our son Dave, his wife Shannon, their daughter Maddie and her friend Jason, who were visiting from the Bay area. Dave and Shannon’s daughter, Meredith, who lives and goes to college in Olympia, Washington, was unable to join us. However, with our two grand-dogs also present (Buffy and Harley), we had a “small” crowd just enjoying being together.
Shannon served a prime rib roast, with Yorkshire pudding, a British pastry made with flour, eggs, and milk, a delicious cheesy-cauliflower casserole, baked potatoes with all the “good” toppings, and a nice green salad. I added the raw cranberry-jello-crushed pineapple side dish that is a tradition with our family. For dessert, Shannon had made a chocolate cake layered with peppermint ice cream that was perfect after the roast and baked potatoes. After dinner, Jason (Keiser), who is a professional musician and music educator, entertained us with his guitar. He played a selection of Christmas music along with other familiar pieces. He plays the Mandolin and Banjo and keys in on Jazz, Salsa, Bossa Nova, and Bluegrass with all of the instruments. His music made for a very special evening. You probably still have your cookie-making supplies and equipment handy, so this next recipe will be one that you can use to make a batch of these
“little bites” that everyone will enjoy after the heavier desserts of the holidays.

It’s like trying to herd ants, pigs, or cats. The really cagey cows will wait for just the right moment to explode through the middle of the herd, so you have to start all over again while the trucks wait to ship your calves. It can be very costly because you have to buy faster horses and can lead to a divorce if your wife isn’t the type to stand her ground while plugging a hole in the fence. #3 Digestibility: There’s great work being done to determine the efficiency of our animals, but it’s usually in a
feedlot setting with concentrated feeds. After watching the same old cows pig out on supplement tubs, I want to know how much supplement they eat. I used to use blocks but went to tubs when I saw one old glutton with a half a block in her mouth trying to swallow the whole thing. #2 Perfectability: The best cow I ever owned wouldn’t weigh 950 pounds, but she never failed to bring a 650 pounder to the weaning pen. She was gentle as a lamb, babysat the calves while their 1,400-pound mothers went to gorge on water and eat supplements, always stood still in the chute, and did all this until she was 13. She was a mongrel crossbred cow that looked like a bag of bones. #1 Lovability: I want lovesick cows that chase bulls, calve early, and never miss, so give me immoral floozy cows and horny bulls. Animal scientists, I’m begging, please give me a Horny EPD. And I’m not talking about those things that stick out of a bovine’s head. “Having a Positive Perspective for the New Year” dr. gary barker
D
COLUMNIST
r. Warren Wiersbe, who was a wellknown theologian and pastor in America, made a very important and true statement: “Outlook Determines Outcome.” What is going to happen to each of us in the new year to a great extent will be determined by our mental attitude and perspective of life. Dr. Wiersbe was a Christian who believed that the Bible was the Word of God and the basis for having a positive outlook on Life. In this devotion, I want to share with you five biblical concepts that will produce a positive and prosperous attitude for dealing with everything that will occur in our lives in 2022. Each concept will begin with the letter “P.” Present: Our life will be positive when we believe that God
will be present with us in everything we face. Jesus promised us in Matthew 28:20: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” God’s presence in our lives means all of God’s infinite attributes and resources will be used to help meet our every need. Psalm 23:4 promises us that the Lord will be with us and enable us to handle all of our fears or even possible death. A believer doesn’t fear death because he knows that death is just a stepping stone that leads into heaven to be in God’s presence forever (2 Cor. 5:8, Philippians 1:21-23). Death is gain because to depart from this life results in being with Christ in heaven, which is far better than living on earth. Life’s greatest fear is conquered by FAITH. Faith doesn’t make life easy, but it does make what we believe possible. Plan: God also has a wonderful plan for the life of every believer. Paul, the apostle, states in Romans 8:28-31 that God has a predestined purpose for the life of a believer, and if he does it, all things in his life will
work out for his good. Doing God’s will is another way of saying that a believer has a divine plan to carry out in his life (Romans 12:1-2, Ephesians 5:17). Life will be good when God’s will is followed and obeyed. Power: The wonderful truth about doing God’s will is that through His omnipotent power, He enables us to do it. Philippians 4:13 clearly states that a believer can do all things through Christ who strengthens him. A Christian can live and accomplish doing God’s goodwill through divine omnipotent power. The apostle Paul said in Philippians 2:13: for it is God who works in you both to will and do His good pleasure. God enables a believer to do what pleases God. God will always personally supply all the resources we need to please Him. Promises: Another great provision of God that will cause us to prosper in the new year is His exceeding great and precious promises (2 Peter 1:3-4). A very well-known
statement is, “The future is as Bright as the PROMISES of God.” God’s promises inspire faith and hope, which are so necessary to deal with the various issues of life. The just shall LIVE BY FAITH (Romans 1:17). Part of faith is hope (Hebrews 11:1), and hope will inspire a positive outlook in our lives. Prayer: Finally, we have prayer which is one of life’s greatest resources for living a blessed and happy life. Jesus taught His disciples that we are to “have faith in God” and believe that God will always respond positively to a prayer of faith (Mark 11;22-24). Everything we need to live life well is just a prayer away. May these five concepts— God’s presence, plan, power, promises, and answers to prayer—enable you to have a fruitful and successful new year. With God, all things are POSSIBLE (Luke 1:37). one child together, a son named Raymond Barba, born Dec. 14, 1941. Henry Barba comes from a long line of military men, going back as early as the Civil War. Many died in action and are buried in many Central Coast Cemeteries. And in 1940, it was Barba’s turn to follow in the footsteps of the men before him. He was drafted into the U.S. Army. When he heard he was drafted, it was no surprise. All he thought was, “Well, this is it.” Then Barba headed to basic training at Camp McQuaid in Watsonville. He was assigned to the 250th Coast Artillery Battery G, also known as the Glamour Boys, and off he went to Kodiak Island, Alaska. Despite the cold, life in Kodiak wasn’t so bad. The troops lived in tents, but coffee was always hot, and they got three square meals a day. Barba, who came from poverty, was lucky to get one, sometimes two meals a day. His family didn’t take assistance or food stamps. So for someone who came from hardships like that, camp life wasn’t so bad. In 1941 it was declared that anyone ages 29 and older was to be sent back to Seattle and discharged. Barba just missed the cut being 28 years old at the time. It turned out it didn’t matter anyway because then, on Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed. The boat turned around and headed back for Kodiak Island. One of Barba’s duties was the spotlight. At night he would scan for enemy aircraft or their artillery. The only thing was if he did spot an enemy, all anyone had were wooden guns! The island had no cannons either. Just wood phone poles made to look like guns and decoy airplanes. There were only five rifles on the entire island. When the war finally ended in Europe, Barba felt happy and proud. When the war ended in
win world championships, and move up classes.” Getting nominated for the list wasn’t something Maddi and Macie were expecting. But after learning what the list was all about and the values the magazine’s editor held, they felt privileged to even be considered. The sisters share the list with some of the sport’s top up and coming racers. They were able to travel to Indianapolis on Dec. 9-11 to personally receive their nomination at the convention. Both of them note it as a highlight of their still new career. Maddi and Macie each have their own cars and have been making their mark in the Division 7 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Junior
the Pacific, where his brothers and friends were stationed, he was elated. Barba and many others who were in the military at the time knew Japan was ready to fight for ten years on their homefront. According to Barba, the U.S. anticipated so many deaths in the Pacific and had so many Purple Heart medals made that they are still giving out medals from the same batch made in WWII. He was one of the oldest living WWII veterans in California. One of Barba’s greatest loves was baseball, specifically the Dodgers. He began listening to Dodger games on the radio when they were based in Brooklyn (1884-1957). And on Oct. 11, 2021, he was honored at the Dodger game in Los Angeles. Barba was able to sit between home plate and third base. He even brought his childhood leather baseball glove, just in case he needed it. Henry Barba lived through the Spanish Flu, the prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the fantastic 50s, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the takeover of technology, and fast times. He lived through the turn of a century, the terrorist attack on 9/11, another recession, and a second pandemic. He will be greatly missed throughout the community, mowing his lawn and singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Maddi (17), a junior, won in 2016 and nearly stood in the winner circle in 2018 and 2019, losing just by a few points due to car troubles. In 2020 the sisters were able to go on the road with their dad, working as his pit crew. The two are able to take down and rebuild the engine. “We’ve always wanted to do this but never realized it could happen. It’s such an opportunity to learn more and get more involved with it,” said Maddi. “It’s actually really exciting because we started Covid year working on Dad’s car, but if you see other crews, they are grown men. affair. Doug is a six-time regional/divisional champion and won the 2020 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, making him a world champion. Doug’s car, the Top Alcohol Funny Car, was originally owned by his father. He started in the racing industry just like his daughters, helping work on the car and learning the mechanics. Then in 1993, Doug got his chance to race the funny car himself. Maddi says their dad loves having them as part of the crew, “He obviously wants his family to be involved, but he never realized it would be like this. He loves it, though, and now our mom is starting to do more on the car too.” The sisters racing careers have only just started. In a few years, Maddi will be handed the reigns to the Funny car—something she has dreamed of since she could remember. In fact, when Maddi was 11 years old, she wrote in a
country to work at a Barbershop in Toronto, Canada. “I went there twice,” Abate says of his Barbering days in Canada. “When I was working at The Ritual in SLO, I got an offer from Brian Hurson, who owns The Night Owl Barbershop in Toronto. It’s a shop that’s been there since the 40s. And it’s pretty well known in the industry. He had reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to do a guest spot. And so I went up there for a month, and I did it. And then I was like, ‘wow, this is awesome,’ and he invited me to come back full-time. They were opening up another location. And so I went up there to be in that shop. I was able to learn a lot from him because he’s from Ireland, and he learned in a shop over there that’s a staple in Dublin. So it was a good experience, and I just wanted to bring all of that knowledge back to my hometown.” Over the last two years, Abate has been looking to hire Barbers who share his passion for the trade, but he’s had no such luck. “I can’t just put up a “help wanted” sign. time capsule that she wanted to drive the Funny Car one day. Top Alcohol Funny Cars are capable of performances in 5.3 seconds at more than 270 mph. Macie looks forward to following her sister and moving up to Super Comp dragster in 2023. Super Comp is the quickest of the heads-up Super classes and cars in this class are capable of running racing times in the 8.90 index. These cars typically hit 165 to 175 mph. Three generations of Gordons are hitting the racetracks together, none of them afraid of a bit of adrenaline. However, Abate has seen a growth in clientele over the last year, with people coming to the area from LA and San Francisco, but it’s his local, loyal customers who are his bread and butter. “If you do 15 people in a day, in a city, you might see those people again. Whereas here, it’s the same group of guys month in month out. Those are the guys who pay the bills, Abate explained. Abate’s love for Barbering is highly evident, and he’s excited about younger generations finding the profession in the future. “Younger kids, you can do a trade. You can become a Barber. It’s a cool profession, and arguably, especially if you don’t know what you want to do, you get to meet so many different types of people.” To make an appointment at Nate’s Barbershop, go to: natesbarbershop.resurva.com
to work when I got out.” Abate, who grew up in Atascadero, attended SLO Barber College in 2013 before starting work at The Ritual and a few other Barbering gigs. He then opened Abate’s Barbershop threeand-a-half years ago, in May of 2018. The Barbershop oozes retro vibes with its minimal, vintage decor and a large window, featuring the shop’s name in bold print. The shop is at home on 5920 Entrada Avenue in Atascadero. “It’s one of the oldest professions in the world. You know, it’s been around forever,” Abate stated excitedly about Barbering. “The culture, the community aspect. You get so many different types of people in your chair. And so many different members of the community that you would normally not speak to. I did a little stint, like a day or two, in a shop in Orcutt. It’s been there since the 60s. And the guy made it a point, in the middle of the shop, when it was busy to ask, ‘what do you think that guy does? This guy’s a priest; this guy maybe isn’t in the most professional sorts of ways of making a living.’ All those different people can sit in the shop together and converse. And nobody thinks twice about it. And I thought that was pretty cool.” On top of working at The Ritual and before returning to Atascadero to open up shop, Abate worked a short stint at Pistons and Pearls in Monterey, California. He also went out of the Abate has practiced barbering all over California and even in Toronto, Canada. Contributed photos
CUPCAKES CONTINUED FROM A1
looking for something a little more fun, creative and flexible. Freitas and her husband were thinking of starting some type of food truck business when the opportunity came up a few years ago to buy Clementine Cupcake Company & Mobile Cookie Cafe from original owner Sadie Agueda. With memories of growing up baking with her mom and having a major sweet tooth, buying the cupcake business sounded like the perfect move. Along with the name, reputation, and various business assets, Clementine’s came with a lineup of award-winning cupcake and cookie recipes which Freitas has added to over the years. In the beginning, the business was run out of a Health Department approved kitchen, which they had built in their garage, baking and delivering made-toorder cupcakes and cookies for parties, weddings, special events, and businesses. They later added a larger, cheery, tangerine, and white vintage trailer, which was decked out to become their mobile cookie cafe to serve happy customers at larger events and festivals. Fast forward to this past Sept. 1, the date that Freitas signed the
lease on the old Just Baked spot, vacant after the business closed to concentrate on their Paso Robles location. Opening day for Clementine Cupcake Company’s new location was Thursday, Oct. 28, in time for Halloween, with display
cases filled with an array of spooky and tasty treats. The recent sale of the mobile cafe allows for more family time and lets Freitas and her team concentrate on special order baking and the new location. So, what will it be? A Unicorn,
Plain Jane, Lemon Drop, Chai Spice cupcake, Caramel Stuffed Snickerdoodle, or gluten-free Oatmeal Toffee cookie? Clementine Cupcake Company is there for you Thursday through Saturday 11:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
