The Sunken Gardens were taken over by the event, so much so, that it spilled into the streets on either side of the square, mainly to accommodate the 12+ carnival rides that kids and adults alike lined up to ride. Carnival passes could be purchased upon arrival, and it was evident that people put them

to good use. The Ferris Wheel in front of City Hall was the standout. “That line to get on the Ferris Wheel was so long. It was adults; it was kids; it was teenagers. What they were telling us was; one, there’s a Ferris Wheel in front of City Hall, and two, they just wanted to get up and see the view and see City Hall from a different perspective. We knew they [The Ferris Wheel and Swings in front of City

Hall] were going to do good, but we didn’t know how well they were going to do,” Nuno said. Attendees also gathered around two stages at the festival to listen to free concerts from both local and non-local bands of all genres for all three days of the weekend. Local teens were also featured in the lineup, competing in a Battle of the Teenage Bands. Jumpstart, a classic-rock cover band out of

Santa Barbara, took home the big win! ATASCADERO — El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) 3rd Annual North County Turkey Trot is set for Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 25, at the Atascadero Lake Pavilion Bandstand. Participants are encouraged to wear their best turkey costume while they run/walk twice around the lake. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes for adults, children, and pets. The suggested donation for participation is $20 per individual and will help

provide services to those in need in our community. There is no need to register in advance; donations will be taken at the event. 1,500 men, women, and children from all communities, a traditional Thanksgiving meal at no cost. For 37 years, volunteers have made delicious handmade Thanksgiving carryout dinners for our community of friends and families. Thanksgiving for Paso Robles is 100 percent funded by donations from the community. It takes approximately $9,000 and 200 volunteers to put on the annual dinner. Given challenging circumstances from the past two years, Chairman David Kudija says they are preparing to make 1,500 meals—300 more than usual. Volunteers begin prepping and

during the community band’s Rock, Paper, Jazz concert held at the Lake Park bandstand on Sept. 26. The Atascadero Community Band is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization and performs several free concerts throughout the year. Each concert benefits a local charitable cause chosen by the band. Through their charitable giving program, Miner’s selected People’s Self-Help Housing as the recipient of a grant which funded the purchase of 12 new computers for local students. These computers replaced much-outdated equipment, a free service available at PSHH’s site-based learning centers and which many program participants rely on to complete assignments, apply for college, and participate in virtual learning. Camino Scholars serves over 400 students per year throughout the Central Coast. As evidenced by standardized test scores, their curriculum significantly improves math and literacy skills and sets students on the path to lifelong learning. The program also helps prepare collegebound students for higher education through application assistance, financial aid navigation, career exploration workshops, campus visits, mentorship, and continuing support while enrolled in college. SAN LUIS OBISPO — On Nov. 15, members of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau and the Pismo Oceano Vegetable Exchange (POVE) donated 100 turkeys and over 4,500 pounds of locally- grown celery and cabbage to the SLO Food Bank. The SLO County agriculture community worked together to raise funds to cover the cost of the turkeys. This year, they exceeded their goal, raising $6,430 in total, and will donate the remaining funds to the SLO Food Bank. This donation is a continuation of a tradition first put in place by Hugh Pitts, a past SLO County Farm Bureau board member. Each year around the holidays, Pitts would donate a pallet of turkeys to the SLO Food Bank. When Hugh passed away in 2018, the donations were paused. Then in 2020, members of the community decided to work together

to keep Hugh’s holiday tradition alive. This year marks the second year that the SLO County Farm Bureau and POVE have continued this fundraiser. SLO Food Bank’s Operations Director, Emily Hansen, spoke to the importance of the donation: “We’re still seeing incredibly high needs from the community. The holidays can be such a tough time for those just trying to make ends meet. Templeton School District Looks at State Assessments The Board suggests agendizing a discussion on the potential vaccine mandate in March 2022 By MELISSA GUERRA

TEMPLETON — Templeton Unified School District (TUSD) met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6:15 p.m. The meeting opened with a reminder that masks are required inside the building except for those who have exemptions. The first item was to report on closed session. The report stated that Trustee Nelson Yamagata made a motion to approve the readmittance of a student, which was approved 5-0. The denial of interdistrict transfers was approved 5-0, and no action was made on the personnel review and possible action, nor on the legal counsel on potential litigation.

Public comment opened with a suggestion of creating a fundraiser for those within the school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to have a Thanksgiving or Christmas. The next comment was by Jennifer Grinager, who represents Moms for Liberty and the opposition to the impending vaccine mandate. She expressed her concern with the special meeting to approve more COVID funds which would force the district to adhere to the impending mandates. She also addressed the idea that special meetings that come up after the agenda is first created could be notified to parents via email so that those who don’t check the TUSD site daily could still be informed. Several more parents called in to ask to put on a future meeting a discussion about the vaccine mandate and how TUSD plans on handling it so that parents can plan around that. Following public comment Trustee, Yamagata addressed the issue of vaccine

mandate and that until the district knows when it is planned to come through and what it entails, they can’t begin to plan their response to it. Yamagata stated that by best guess, it will be July 2022 and that it would be good to agendize around March of next year. The consent agenda was approved with a 5-0 vote. The next was the instructions report, which covered the California assessments and did not mandate that all students take the Smart Balance Assessment but that there were other assessments available. The district took into consideration all the difficulties of the year of distance learning and made the choices for their students based off that information. Vineyard made the decision to use the Fast Bridge Assessment, while high school students did take the Smart Balance Assessment. Benchmark assessments are being administered so that the school can see throughout the year how the students

are progressing. For students who have never taken the assessment because it was suspended in 2019/20, the school is creating a program so that the students can get familiar with the process and the assessment before the spring when they will take the assessment and have it recorded with the California data. The assessments are scheduled to begin after spring break. Next was the resolution for national special education day. Dec. 2 is National Special Education Day because it is the date the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”) was signed into law in 1975. The IDEA made education available to all children and stipulates that children with disabilities have a right to the same free and appropriate education that is available to every other child. The motion passed 5-0. The next item was regarding legislation passed that affects personnel. The new legislation AB 438 was passed in relation to classified staff layoffs that will be in effect

Supervisors Choose Two Draft Maps to Further Analyze for Redistricting New map submissions will no longer be considered, but input on the two maps is still accepted By MELISSA GUERRA

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting to discuss redistricting on Friday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. The redistricting process began in March when the update came that the census data wouldn’t come through until later, and the timeline was set for the entire process. In July, the first redistricting hearing was held, and community input was heard ahead of census data. Oct. 26 was the second redistricting hearing to consider draft maps from the public and advisory committees. Revised finalist maps will be published on Nov. 24, and the fourth redistricting meeting will be held on Nov. 30, at which time the Board will approve a final redistricting map or plan. The county ordinance will be introduced on Dec. 7, and the Board will amend the county ordinance to reflect the map on Dec. 14, just ahead of the deadline. The themes from the public comment from previous meetings were presented as follows:

Plans were submitted that aligned with the different themes, and then significantly more public comments came in at future meetings. The recommendations from staff were 1. Conduct a hearing to consider County Staff Advisory Committee initial draft maps and publicly submitted maps 2. Eliminate six publicly submitted maps that have total population deviation of more than 10 percent and one. Map that has been requested to be withdrawn by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce and 3. Select no more than three maps with less than 10 percent total population deviation for final consideration at the fourth redistricting hearing on Nov. 30 and 4. Limit consideration of any further submitted maps from the public to those making minor changes to the three finalist maps and submitted no later than Nov. 21 and

5. Provide staff further direction about the finalists’ maps, in compliance with legal requirements, as necessary The submitted maps were presented in the meeting, and then the meeting was opened up to public comment. The same themes from the public were represented in the discussion. Some commenters mentioned Cal Poly’s inclusion into the city of SLO as being important, and others highlighted the Coastal areas and the need for them to stay together to get fair representation. A large number of public comments mentioned the wish for a citizens committee, which is largely not done in California counties. After public comment, Supervisor John Peschong read a public comment letter from a citizen in Los Osos who did not wish to be included with Paso Robles and expressed concern about white supremacy, racism, and support of Trump and then commented, “I read that to you today because that’s what I’ve been working against and trying to get people to get you to understand, district 1 is your neighbors… They’re good people. That’s what really upsets me is that people in other parts of the county can believe these types of things… your whole point is to be able to decrease the vitriol in our county to raise the vitriol, and writing an op-ed piece like that, that’s what you did.” Supervisor Gibson commented that in an effort to move forward to try to create some stability that the Board bring Map A forward for final consideration, which went to vote prior to all Board members making their comments. The motion was voted down 3-2, with only Supervisor Gibson and Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg in favor. Supervisor Peschong commented to dismiss rumors and to clarify his position that the election was run fair in San Luis Obispo county when Biden was chosen, and that he was not in D.C. on Jan. 6 then made a motion to eliminate the six publicly submitted maps that the population deviation exceeded 10 percent, withdraw the chamber of commerce first map per their request, and to select the Patton map (ID 74786) and the San Luis Obispo new map (ID 75760), limit consideration of further maps from the public, and to limit to the two maps. This motion was seconded by Supervisor Debbie Arnold. The motion passed 4-1, with Supervisor Ortiz-Legg in opposition and Supervisor Gibson voting in approval but with protest against the Patton map, which he stated did not follow the necessary guidelines. Supervisor Gibson then made a motion to also approve Map B, which was seconded by Supervisor Ortiz-Legg but did not pass with a 2-3 vote. Supervisor Gibson moved to direct staff to perform an analysis of acceleration and deferral in the two maps relative to Map A, which represents the status quo. This motion was seconded by Supervisor OrtizLegg. The motion did not pass with a 2-3 vote. The next meeting for redistricting will be held on Nov. 30, and the links will be available on the district website at slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/Board-of-Supervisors/ Board-Meetings,-Agendas-and-Minutes.aspx.

Employees have a chance to submit a request for a hearing after the preliminary notice. The last item on the agenda was the change to the superintendent contract. As a management employee, it does not fall under the represented groups that bargain for scheduled salary increases. The recommendation to approve the contract amendment, which was approved 5-0. SAN LUIS OBISPO — The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) has reopened an onsite COVID-19 testing facility. COVID Clinic, already operating programs at several California airports, will operate the testing site, which is currently open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new testing site is a drivethrough and will offer a wider

variety of tests, including rapid testing and a Molecular PCR test. Users may choose their test based on requirements at their office or travel destination, their schedule, or their personal comfort level. “We are glad to once again offer the San Luis Obispo region and its visitors convenient access to reliable COVID-19 testing,” said Courtney Johnson, Director of Airports. “The drive-through process is efficient and safe, and we hope that residents and travelers alike will take advantage of the COVID Clinic facility.” Appointments are recommended to guarantee same-day testing, but walk-ins are accepted. Jury Convicts Kejuan Bynum of Second-Degree Murder Bynum stabbed to death 23-year-old Cristopher Vento Wilson STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — District Attorney Dan Dow announced that a San Luis Obispo County jury has found Shandon resident Kejuan Guy Bynum (DOB 08/21/92) guilty of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of 23 year old Cristopher Vento Wilson. The jury also found that Bynum committed the murder with a knife. At a separate hearing, Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen found true that Bynum had suffered a prior conviction for robbery in 2015, a violent felony

under California’s Three Strikes Law. At trial, the jury was presented with evidence proving that in the early evening of Jun. 1, 2019, Bynum assaulted Cristopher Vento Wilson on two separate occasions while at a residence in Shandon. During the second assault, Bynum stabbed Cristopher Vento Wilson multiple times, resulting in his death. “We thank the jury for their focused consideration in hearing this emotional case,” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “We hope that this verdict brings some degree of solace to Cristopher’s family, friends, and the community so affected by this senseless act of violence.” Bynum is held without bail at the San Luis Obispo County

Convicted Murderer Jason Greenwell Granted Parole After 11 Years in Prison District Attorney Dan Dow responds to parole board decision to grant parole despite objections STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — On Thursday, Nov. 18, a two-person panel of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Parole Board granted parole to Jason Adam Greenwell, 32, one of five defendants convicted in the September 2010 murder of 15-year-old Dystiny Myers in Nipomo. Greenwell and his crime partners

bound and savagely beat young Dystiny, then buried her in a shallow grave near Santa Margarita Lake. Before they fled, they set a fire. Dystiny’s bound and partially burned body was later discovered in the grave. This was Greenwell’s first parole hearing since his conviction. Greenwell, 20 at the time of the crime, has been disciplinary free while in prison. Members of Dystiny’s family attended the parole hearing by video and strongly objected to his parole. A representative of the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office attended the hearing and voiced a forceful objection to the release of Greenwell based on the vicious

nature of the crime and continued danger to the community should he be released. “I strongly disagree with the Parole Board’s decision to release Mr. Greenwell into our community after serving only 11 years for such a shocking crime” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “My office will aggressively seek review and repeal of the Parole Board’s decision in this case.” In 2013 Greenwell pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison. At the time of his sentence individuals convicted of murder received no “good time” credits. Meaning, Greenwell was required to serve everyday of 15 years prior to even being considered for parole.

In 2016 Proposition 57 was passed which provides individuals convicted of violent crimes, such a murder, up to a 1/3 or 33 percent reduction in their sentence. As a result Greenwell was granted paroled after serving only 11 years for his part in the murder. Three of the murderers, Ty Michael Hill, Frank Jacob York, and Rhonda Wisto, are serving sentences of life without the possibility of parole. A fourth, Cody Miller, took his own life while in prison in June 2016. The District Attorney will seek a review and reversal of the Parole Board’s decision directly to Governor Gavin Newsom.

Woods Humane Society Announces

‘Giving Tuesday’ Matching Challenge Donations up to $20K Will Be Doubled to Help More Homeless Animals This Holiday Season STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Donations to Woods Humane Society will go twice as far for homeless animals this Giving Tuesday – the internationally celebrated day of charitable giving and generosity – which takes place on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. Thanks to a group of local compassionate animal friends, including the Sparacio Foundation, all donations made to the organization between now and Nov. 30 will be matched, up to $20,000. “During this season of thanks, we are incredibly grateful for all that this community has done to help change the lives of homeless animals,” says Woods CEO Neil Trent. “The generosity of our SLO County neighbors and friends has allowed us to provide thousands of dogs and cats with shelter, medical care, and a loving home. However, there are still many animals in need of help. In celebration of Giving Tuesday, we are asking the community to partner with us once more.” Trent notes that Woods Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that receives no tax funds, and instead relies on support from donations, grants, bequests, fundraising events, and fees for services to conduct its life-saving work. Woods provides shelter, medical care, spay and neuter surgeries, and adoption services that add up to $800 per animal, on average, for more than 3,000 cats and dogs each year. In addition to taking in surrendered pets from local community members who can no longer care for them, the organization transfers animals from overcrowded shelters and animal rescues, both within San Luis

Obispo County and throughout the state. As part of the organization’s commitment to managing companion animal populations, Woods also provides low-cost spay and neuter services to San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, many other local rescue organizations, and owned animals in the county. The Woods medical team has performed more than 5,000 surgeries this year at its two clinic locations. Additionally, Woods offers a Humane Education Program for local youth, and dog training and behavioral assistance through its Woods University Behavior and Training Department. The mission of Redwings Horse Sanctuary is to eliminate the causes of equine suffering through educational and community outreach programs, rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected equines and provide permanent sanctuary or selected foster/adoptive homes for those equines. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Redwings is always looking for volunteers to help us provide the highest standard of care for our horses and burros. You do not need to have any prior horse experience to volunteer at Redwings. If you would like to work with our horses, the first step is to take a Volunteer Training Class. This class covers sanctuary rules, basic safe horsemanship skills, and an introduction to some of the horses that you will be working with. After completion of the class you are welcome to come volunteer and help with the horses any time during our volunteer hours. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3:30pm, and we are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Note: We do not allow volunteers to ride the horses at Redwings. There are other ways to get involved and volunteer at Redwings too. We have opportunities to help in our rose and memorial garden, volunteering in the office, helping with events and fundraising, and more. ocal man Greg E. Waters died of heart failure Sunday, November 14, 2021, in Spring, TX. Greg graduated from Atascadero High. He spent many days trimming trees throughout SLO county. He leaves his aunt and uncle, the Eddings, many cousins, the Cates family, and the Bjornson family from the area. We will all miss Greg. Services were held at McNutt Funeral Home in Conroe, TX, at 2:00 pm on November 16, 2021.

Delbert and Marjorie Jones. She spent all of her growing up years there, enjoying her young life. After leaving Stockton, Lynn spent time in Encinitas, Modesto, and the Merced area, before settling down in Atascadero, CA. Lynn was an appreciator of art, music, food, animals, and humanity. She always put her wholehearted effort and love into these endeavors, which certainly made the world a better place. Lynn could also be quite adventurous, spending time water skiing, snow skiing, windsurfing,

and always taking “A short hike” which, was never short. But as much as Lynn enjoyed taking part in all these activities, the most important thing to her was the people she did these things with. As a radiological technician, Lynn touched so many people with her easy-going disposition, soft touch, and empathy. Scared people, people that might die. But Lynn always made them feel better, even if the only time she spent with them was for a short exam. Sometimes she met these people over and over through-

out their treatment for serious illnesses. Many came back after their recovery to thank her. Some didn’t survive, but Lynn always remembered their names, their families, and their story. The most distinguishing mark of Lynn, whether at work or play, was her laugh. You could hear it from far away, and you always knew that it was her. Everyone that knew Lynn will miss this special person, and that laugh, for the rest of their lives. Lynn is survived by her siblings June Gentry, Janet Wolhart, Gail Eastburn, Amy

Noel was extremely social – he loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He was a very kind and generous man, always willing to lend a hand to family, friends, and even strangers in need. In recent years at Thanksgiving, Noel and Kathleen could be found serving meals at Centennial Park. Noel performed countless hours of community service as a member of the Church of the LatterDay Saints in Paso Robles. A memorial service for Noel was held Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 1:00 pm outside of the LDS Church in Paso Robles, located at 1020 Creston Road. At 3:00 pm, we will caravan to the graveside at the San Miguel District Cemetery. All are welcome. Ronald was a graduate of Paso Robles High School, class of 1966. He served in the Army from January 9, 1968, to January 9, 1970, serving in Vietnam. Ronald trained at Fort Ord, Fort Lewis, and Fort Benning and was a scout dog handler. He was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal,

Air Medal, Purple Heart, and Combat infantry badge. He worked at Bryan’s beef, Ennis, Pro Forms, and SA Recycling before retiring in 2013. He was an avid Baseball (Dodger) fan and played baseball and softball, most notably with the trash dogs, going to the senior games in St. George, Utah, several times. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. He loved fishing and hunting with his brother Wally (Gator), Maddog, and Coop. He loved spending time with lifelong friends

ave you ever wondered why there are so many white pickup trucks on the road today? For a while, I thought it might be illegal to drive a blue truck, or we were back in Hen ry Ford’s days when he said you could buy any color car you wanted from him as long as it was black. Every major manufacturer today either consults with or has “colorists” on staff to advise them on the best color to package their product in. For trucks, the best-selling color is white and has been for years. There are several logical reasons why. White is the only color that doesn’t fade; the color white reflects heat, so the pickup cab stays cooler than, say, a black truck; white trucks actually get better performance in hot weather because air conditioning is used less, making the truck more fuel-efficient; white trucks last longer and have a higher

trade-in value (red, orange and yellow have the worst); companies like white trucks because they can buy them year after year and know they’ll still be available and they don’t have to paint them to have a uniform colored fleet; white trucks appear bigger than they are; names and advertising stick out better on white trucks; and white trucks are safer, having 12 percent fewer accidents than black trucks because they are more easily seen, except in blizzards, of course. I think one of the biggest reasons white trucks are so popular is they don’t show water spots, dings, or dirt. Years ago, we had a white Ford Econoline truck that we called Ewe Haul because we hauled sheep in it. We bought it from my Grandpa for $500, and to my knowledge, it had never been washed in its lifetime, and it still didn’t look as dirty as a clean black vehicle after two minutes on a dirt road. The “colorists” also say that the color white projects a sense of honesty, purity, freedom, good taste, and elegance. Although I must say, I didn’t feel all that elegant driving that old Econoline full of sheep that looked like a bulldog with its flattened nose, engine inside the cab, and one thin

layer of sheet metal between you and a concrete bridge abutment. You can say all the nice things you want about white trucks, but to me, they are still B-O-R-I-N-G! The colorists have discovered some fascinating things. For instance, silver, white and black trucks have the highest resale value, and red trucks are the most often overpriced. On more domestic matters, did you know that men prefer white bedrooms while women prefer blue? Did you also know that the Yellow Taxi Cab Company painted its cabs yellow because they were easier to see? The colorists don’t have all the answers, though, and they still don’t know why men like yellowbased red while women prefer blue-based red. Or why bronze induces a very negative response. They don’t know why old-time cowboys hardly ever wore red shirts while they practically became the official uniform for miners. Colorists also don’t know why weightlifters can lift more weight if they wear blue shorts, why more people buy blue toothbrushes than they do red, and why yellow and red stimulate hunger. (Which explains the color of

Cool bread in pan on wire rack 10 minutes. For glaze, in small bowl, stir together powdered sugar, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and enough milk to make thin drizzling consistency. Invert bread onto a serving platter. Turn the loaf over and drizzle with glaze. Serve warm. Note: If using nuts, sprinkle over pie filling on rounds before assembling the loaf. If using sugar sparkles, lightly sprinkle on unbaked loaf before baking. Cheers! Dark brown means you’re a depressing person, while silver means you’re highly complex. Dark blue conveys a sense of respect and responsibility, while orange and grey mean you’re cheap. The color orchid makes people nauseous. Even though green is the color of money and makes people feel wealthy, green trucks are hardly ever stolen. But that’s still not incentive enough for me to go out and buy a truck the color of split pea soup with orchid trim. The Pet Boost: Furry Friends Help Seniors Feel Less Lonely STAFF REPORT

any older adults experience feelings of loneliness and isolation as they age, but pets can provide the companionship and love seniors desire. A new survey conducted by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care Network, found regular interaction with animals can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness in older adults. The most frequently cited benefits of pet ownership are company, comfort, unconditional love, entertainment and improved mood. In fact, 86 percent of pet owners agree they would be lonelier and less happy without their pet, and 58 percent agree that they would not be as physically healthy without their pet. The companionship and love provided by a pet can be especially meaningful for those most at risk for isolation. The survey found that pet owners who live alone are significantly more likely to report increased benefits of pet ownership.Owning a pet can also be an important factor for seniors deciding where they will live as they age. According to the survey, 82 percent of older adults say they will not consider moving to a senior living community without their pet. While interaction with animals has been shown to improve mental and physical well-being in older adults, research confirms that seniors don’t need to own pets to experience the benefits. Those who regularly interact with, but don’t own, pets report feeling better just spending time with animals owned by family, friends and neighbors.

There are many ways seniors can interact with animals without taking on the responsibility of pet ownership. Here are a few ideas: • Volunteer at a rescue organization or animal shelter. Many rescue organizations and animal shelters could use an extra hand. Seniors can help provide care for animals, including feeding, watering, restocking supplies, washing dishes, walking dogs, cleaning cages and enclosures or socializing with the animals. Volunteers experience the benefits of interacting with pets, and they can provide some care to an animal in need. • Get to know your neighbors’ pets. Seniors who regularly walk their neighborhoods will likely see pet owners walking their dogs. Asking to join them for a walk might lead to new friendships with neighbors and dogs. • Connect with a therapy animal. Pet Partners therapy teams, made up of a pet owner and his or her registered animal, go into many locations where seniors are living or being treated, such as hospitals, hospice centers and care communities. • Visit a pet store. Some pet stores sell small animals, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, mice, rats, certain geckos, bearded dragons, snakes, and specific types of frogs, birds and fish. Visiting can provide a pet fix! With so many options available, finding the right animal interaction for each individual should be as easy as a walk in the dog park.

His version reflects more of what we have come to love as the Nutcracker Ballet.” Eighty performers, ranging in ages from six to 60, will be dancing at the Spanos Theater at Cal Poly and bringing together dancers from across the county representing Class Act Dance in Paso Robles, Main Street Dance in Templeton, and for the first time, CORE Dance in San Luis Obispo. Dancers are looking forward to returning to live in-person performance after having to cancel last year’s performance due to COVID restrictions. Rather than their traditional ballet, performers participated in a worldwide virtual performance of The Nutcracker with the Nutshell production. production had a late start from not knowing if COVID restrictions would allow them to perform. But, when they knew the show would go on, performers began learning their choreography in September. So ever since then, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, people are encouraged to shop small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. Again, businesses big and small are suffering. The COVID pandemic caused the entire world to close its doors, and many of those businesses never managed to open up again. Following that year of shutdowns and inconsistencies, small businesses are now struggling to keep up with inflation and employee shortages. According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2020, the pandemic caused the permanent closure of over 200,000 establishments. In California, nearly 40,000 small businesses had closed by September 2020, more than any other state in the nation. According to a report compiled by Yelp, half had shut permanently, far more than the 6,400 that had closed permanently in New York. The Yelp report was compiled in September 2020 and states, “As of Aug. 31, [2020] 163,735 total U.S. businesses on Yelp have closed since the beginning of the pandemic (observed as Mar. 1), a 23 percent increase since Jul. 10 [2020]. In the wake of COVID-19 cases increasing and local restrictions continuing to change in many states we’re seeing both permanent and temporary closures rise across the nation, with 60 percent of those closed businesses not reopening (97,966 permanently closed).” The restaurant industry showed to be among the most impacted, totaling 32,109 closures as of Aug. 31, 2020, with 19,590 of these business closures indicated to be permanent (61 percent). As for bars and nightlife, there were 6,451 total business closures

at the end of August, of which 3,499 were permanently closed (54 percent). Retail businesses followed closely behind, with 30,374 total business closures, 17,503 of which are permanent (58 percent). The beauty industry has seen a total of 16,585 closures. Of all closed businesses in the beauty industry, 7,002 won’t reopen (42 percent), a significant 43 percent increase since July 2020 when we reported that 4,897 of all closures in the beauty industry were permanent. Similarly, the fitness industry has endured a 23 percent increase in closures since July, with 6,024 total closures, 2,616 of which are permanently closed. California and Nevada have the highest rate of total closures and permanent closures—they also currently have the highest unemployment rates as of October 2021. On the upside, as of September 2021, 85 percent of temporarily closed businesses have reopened, and we have even seen some new businesses open in our downtowns.
