At the RMCMA we believe in building community through music. This philosophy permeates everything we do from our outreach programs and work in the public schools, to Kaleidoscope Concerts, Broadway and Jazz ensembles and individual lessons. Studying an instrument in a one-on-one setting is not necessarily a community building activity, but at the RMCMA you build relationships with teachers and other students. You will also join our larger community that includes students and families, faculty members, staff, and other community members you meet when attending concerts. The expanded offerings in our 17th academic year reflect this commitment to building community. On the following pages you will find more opportunities than ever to learn about and create music with others. You don’t have to jump in all at once. We encourage you to find one program that interests you, sign up, and see where your passion takes you. Whether you study individually, play in an ensemble, or sit in the audience at one of our concerts, you will find new friends to share in your experience. We look forward to seeing and hearing you.

ABOUT CMF & RMCMA

VISITING THE RMCMA

The Colorado Music Festival & Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts (CMF & RMCMA) is a one-of-a-kind organization that provides a broad spectrum of music education opportunities and world-class performances to citizens throughout Boulder County and beyond.

We are located on the southeast corner of Harrison Avenue and Baseline Road, one block east of Public Road, at 200 E. Baseline Road in Lafayette. The main entrance is on Harrison and the Student Services Office is located just inside the front door to the right. Building hours vary according to usage but always include 10am-6pm Monday through Friday, except during the summer when the office closes at 4pm on Fridays. We are located in a residential area and across the street from Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer. Please drive slowly and cautiously in our neighborhood.

Our Mission is to inspire and connect community members of all ages by providing access to the best of the world’s music through education and performance. The Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts, founded in 1995 by Kathy Kucsan and Peggy Bruns, provides quality, creative music-making opportunities to over 550 students each week. Another 7,000 people visit the school each year to attend guest artist concerts and student and faculty recitals. The RMCMA is a full member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education and has, at its core, a belief in “Music for All… For Life!” This commitment translates into providing access to excellent music education to our entire community. We achieve this, in part, through our Heartstrings Program, which consists of an Instrument Bank to provide low-cost instrument rentals and Tuition Assistance so that everyone can afford to participate. (See page 16 for more information on The Heartstrings Program.) The RMCMA is located in the heart of downtown Lafayette and features thirteen teaching studios and two performance spaces – Founders Hall and Grimes Recital Hall.

PARKING Parking is available on Harrison and on neighboring streets but not on Baseline Road. We encourage alternative methods of transportation. There is a bike rack near the front door and an RTD bus stop one block away on North Public Road.

AFFILIATIONS We are a proud member of the following organizations: National Guild for Community Arts Education, Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, Colorado Nonprofit Association, Lafayette Old Town Association, and the Chambers of Boulder, Erie, Lafayette, Louisville, and Superior.

During the summer, CMF presents a six-week concert season at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, showcasing Maestro Michael Christie and the CMF Orchestra. Inspired programming performed by exceptional national and international musicians has earned CMF recognition from the League of American Orchestras and the National Endowment for the Arts. In summer 2012, CMF presented its 36 th concert season, the twelfth with Michael Christie as Music Director. RMCMA students enjoy special offers and discounts to CMF and other concerts throughout the year.

PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are the core of our program at the RMCMA. Weekly private lessons can be arranged for 30, 45, or 60 minutes. For some instruments, it is possible to arrange semiprivate lessons through consultation with the Student Services Office. Lessons may begin at any time during the year. It is the student’s responsibility to have an instrument; the Registrar can help advise students towards rental options. If you are new to private lessons at RMCMA, a paid, three-week trial lesson period is offered to insure the student is well matched with his/her instructor. Our instructors are a diverse group of skilled, dedicated music educators and professional performers who share a strong belief in the pure joy of making music. They hold degrees from leading university and conservatory programs throughout the country and abroad, and are experienced in working with students of all ages and abilities. SUZUKI EDUCATION The Suzuki philosophy emphasizes the importance of nurturing the student’s musical growth through a variety of approaches, including family participation and community music-making. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s lesson and continue to work with their child at home between lessons, thus becoming the “home teacher.” Suzuki families are required to participate in weekly individual lessons and monthly group classes that are arranged by age and ability. Special interest workshops are occasionally offered to supplement group classes. The Suzuki method was developed by the Japanese violinist/educator, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in the 1950s. The method focuses on listening and technical skill development through positive reinforcement and repetition, much in the same way that one learns to speak. Through his work, Dr. Suzuki proved that all people, even young children, have the ability to learn if they are raised in a supportive and enriching environment. Students range from three years to adult in age. Monthly Suzuki Group Classes Suzuki group classes are used to reinforce concepts and repertoire introduced in private lessons. Depending on the level of the group, they may include pre-Twinkle songs and instrumental position games, an introduction to note-reading, and review of the Suzuki repertoire in an ensemble setting. Mid-Winter Suzuki Workshop with Valery Lloyd-Watts We are excited to collaborate with the Boulder Valley Suzuki Teachers Association to present a weekend workshop featuring Valery Lloyd-Watts, a world renowned Suzuki teacher/clinician from Ontario, Canada. The weekend will include a teacher training workshop, concert/lecture by Ms. Watts, masterclasses, movement workshop, parent talk, and a student workshop that is appropriate for all instruments. Chamber Music Mania!-NEW this year! Meet a new community of musicians and enjoy sight-reading the wealth of repertoire written for smaller ensembles. Play trios, quartets, or other works with string, wind, or piano players at your level. Each session will include time to sight-read music as well as time to receive coaching ideas from RMCMA faculty members to deepen your understanding of that composition. No chamber music experience is necessary, but you must be able to read music with a basic level of fluency. Individuals and established chamber groups are welcome to join. This group is open to woodwinds, brass, and percussion instrumentalists.* No formal audition is required but participants are expected to know major scales and be comfortable with intermediate repertoire, which will encompass all genres including popular, march, and symphonic music. Ukulele Social Club The ukulele is an easy instrument to learn and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular instruments around. Reading Orchestra – NEW this year!

Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer Ukelele Class

String players who love to play with others but do not want to commit to strenuous rehearsals and concerts will enjoy this class. Violin, viola, cello, and bass players will read string orchestra and chamber works and enjoy musical collaboration. New compositions will be read at each session, and the group will choose a few pieces to work on in more depth. Basic level of note reading necessary. No audition required.

If you have ever wanted to learn to play the ukelele, this five-week class is for you! No prior musical experience is necessary. In this weekly one-hour class, you will learn to strum basic chords common in many songs. Ukeleles will be available to rent or buy through the RMCMA. Caribbean Sounds – A Musical Journey Learn about Caribbean culture through singing, playing, and dancing. Explore the aural characteristics of each genre while considering its socio-cultural context. We will concentrate on Caribbean popular music and study the musical consequences of the cultural encounters between the many groups of Natives, Europeans, and Africans in post-colonial Caribbean countries. Develop your skills on banjo, dobro, fiddle, guitar, or mandolin through private and/or group lessons with our American Roots Studies faculty. We offer instruction in the musical genres of Bluegrass, Old-time, Blues, and Swing. Learn tunes in private or semi-private lessons, then attend the community jams to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment. For information about private lessons, see page 4.

Learn to Jam In this class you will practice the Old-time and Bluegrass skills you have been learning with your private instructor or on your own and gain experience playing in a community jam setting. Led by professional players, this class will explore improvisation, chord use and comprehension, creation of variations on melodies, and performing within the community in a safe and encouraging setting. ENSEMBLES Ensembles are an important part of music instruction and a valuable supplement to private lessons. Ensembles generally meet weekly or bi-weekly and work on repertoire for community performances.

Bell’A’Cappella This women’s ensemble explores primarily a cappella repertoire of all styles, with an emphasis on ear training and vocal technique. Includes community outreach performances. Music Together® is an internationally recognized, research based, early childhood music program for toddlers, pre-schoolers, and the adults who love them.

Across the country and abroad, seniors are forming bonds with young families and rediscovering the joy of community music-making through Music Together® -Intergenerational Mixed Age classes. These classes are a “win-win” for all: seniors have fun, are stimulated, and create dear connections with children and families; children and families get to ‘extend their family’ by connecting with the “grandmas” and “grandpas” each week.

In a Music Together ® -Mixed Age class, participants experience songs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play. Activities are presented as playful, non-performance oriented musical experiences that are developmentally appropriate for children and easy for parents and caregivers, regardless of their own musical ability. Children are given the freedom to participate as they choose and caregivers are encouraged to continue the musical learning at home by listening to the CDs and enjoying musical play. DALCROZE EDUCATION Dalcroze Education is a unique and powerful foundation in music for individuals of all ages and levels of musicianship. In this method theory always follows practice; musical concepts are felt intuitively in the body in multifaceted ways before the process of cognitive analysis begins. The Annual Fund The Annual Fund helps support all of our activities at CMF & RMCMA, from private lessons to full symphony concerts. Regardless of the amount, gifts to the Annual Fund are the most essential because they can be directed to support the organization wherever the need is greatest.

Attend an Event CMF & RMCMA hosts a number of fundraising events throughout the year. There are events at RMCMA, the Shelby American Collection Museum, and other locations. See page 14 for more information.

Volunteer

HEARTSTRINGS Our musical community includes people of all ages, abilities, and financial resources. The Heartstrings Program began in 2000 as a way to include all interested students, giving them musical instruction and experience that they would not otherwise have access to because of financial limitations. Specifically, the goal of the Heartstrings Program is to ensure that any student of any age is able to access music study and performance. There are two branches of the Heartstrings Program, Tuition Assistance and the Musical Instrument Bank.

Tuition Assistance

We are always grateful to have volunteer help of any kind. Volunteers work on a variety of tasks from filing and data entry to sitting on event committees to lawn work and building maintenance. Contact the Student Services Office to offer your help.

The RMCMA never turns anyone away because of an inability to pay. This year $25,000 in contributed funds has been allocated to our Tuition Assistance Program, ensuring that quality music education is truly available to everyone. At any given time, between 20% and 35% of RMCMA students receive need-based tuition assistance.

The Musical Instrument Bank provides low-cost instrument rentals to families who are unable to purchase or rent an instrument through traditional avenues. The Bank has grown to a collection of more than 250 instruments - traditional band/orchestra instruments, guitars, keyboards, ukuleles and mandolins. Instruments are available on a sliding scale for as low as five dollars a month. We are very proud that, while many of these instruments are used by RMCMA students, a large majority are used by local 5th graders, enabling them to participate in their school instrumental music program. The majority of the instruments have been donated. Please consider donating your instrument.

POLICIES How to Register We are currently researching new systems to improve our registration process, especially the online registration capabilities. Visit comusic.org for up-to-date information on how to register. For individual lessons, please note that new students are enrolled in three paid lessons as a trial period. During that period you may switch teacher, time, day, or instrument. If you switch your teacher or instrument you will be enrolled in another three lesson trial period until you feel you have found a good match. After the trial period has ended all enrollments are for the remainder of the current term.

You may register in one of three ways: • Go to comusic.org, under “Music Education,” click “Enroll” and fill out the form. If you are registering for lessons you will be contacted to schedule lessons with the appropriate faculty member. For all other programs, you will be enrolled and a confirmation email will be sent to you as soon as possible.

ENROLLMENT DEADLINES

RMCMA will assess the level of interest in all classes and ensembles two weeks before each program begins. If we have not reached the minimum number of registrations but there is strong interest we will reassess and make a final decision one week prior to the scheduled start date. In the case of cancellation all registered students will be notified as soon as possible.

Any outstanding balances must be paid before you may enroll in a new term. Accounts not paid in full by the last day of any term will incur a $25 late fee. The RMCMA reserves the right to suspend or discontinue instruction of any student whose account is more than 60 days past due. Accounts more than 120 days past due may be sent to a collection agency.

RE-ENROLLMENT DEADLINES

We accept Discover, Mastercard and Visa cards as well as cash, money order and check. Returned checks will incur a $25 fee.

Current individual students are offered the opportunity to reserve their day, time, and/or teacher for upcoming semesters before new students may enroll. A $50 deposit will save your spot. The deadlines are:

TO CANCEL A LESSON

If you need to cancel a lesson, please contact your teacher directly. Faculty contact information is given out at the time of enrollment and/or at the first lesson. If you cannot find contact information for your teacher please call the office, 303-665-0599.

MISSED LESSON/CLASS POLICY

All lessons and classes missed due to faculty absence or emergency closure will be made up or credited to your account. For lessons, each student is allowed one excused absence per semester. An absence is excused with 24 hours notice or due to illness. Excused absences will be made up at a date and time scheduled between the student and the teacher. There is one week reserved for make-up lessons at the end of the Fall and Winter/Spring terms. Faculty members are required to make only two attempts to schedule make-up lessons. Any excused lessons not made up by the end of the make-up weeks will be credited to your account. Credits not used within one year are forfeited. Credits for student-initiated absences are not available for Tuition Assistance Students. With the exception of Music Together® classes, there are no make-ups for student absences in classes/ensembles.

• Fill out the form at the back of this catalog and mail or fax it to the address/fax number on the form. If you are registering for lessons you will be contacted to schedule lessons with the appropriate faculty member. For all other programs, you will be enrolled and a confirmation letter or email will be sent to you as soon as possible.

LATE ARRIVALS

• Call us at 303-665-0599, or stop by the school, 200 E. Baseline Road, Lafayette, CO 80026. It is helpful if you fill out the form at the back of the catalog so that you have all of the information necessary.

If RMCMA cancels a class for any reason, all fees will be refunded. If you need to cancel your registration any paid tuition, not including the Registration Fee, is refundable up to one week before the start of any class or lesson. Tuition is not refundable with less than one week’s notice, as your space has been saved and may not be filled by someone else. In rare circumstances, students may be allowed to withdraw and have fees refunded due to documented serious illness or financial hardship.

Please note that all registrations will be charged an annual registration fee of $30 per student or $50 per family. This fee helps to cover the cost of our registration system and processes. The registration fee is non-refundable unless RMCMA cancels your program. For individual lessons, a non-refundable $50 deposit is required to save your spot in the schedule. For all other programs/classes you must pay your bill in full or set up an installment plan when you register. See the section on Tuition below for more information.

Students who are involved in sports or other extracurricular activities are advised to consider those schedules when enrolling. Please note: At the time of registration private lesson students may arrange to complete scheduled lessons prior to the end of the term.

Please note: all policies are subject to change.

Due to busy faculty schedules, all lessons/classes/ensembles will end at the scheduled time. Teachers and students are expected to wait for ten minutes to allow for late arrivals. Time missed due to late faculty arrivals will be made up.

CANCELLATION POLICY

RMCMA reserves the right to change instructors or formats, or discontinue any class due to lack of enrollment without incurring any liability or obligation. RMCMA will notify students/families as soon as possible regarding any changes or cancellations.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Individual lessons may be rescheduled once per term if space allows. All subsequent changes will incur a $25 change fee.

TUITION POLICIES

Tuition is charged for the entire term or remainder of the term at the time of registration. Students who pay their entire bill will receive a 5% discount if the tuition is more than $200. If you choose not to pay the entire bill, you must enroll in an installment plan. Installment plans may be billed monthly or can be set up as automatic recurring payments on your credit card. Installment plans will be billed on the 15th of each month with payments due or deducted on the first of the month and must be re-initiated each term.

TUITION DISCOUNTS

Families with more than one registration will receive a 5% discount on each subsequent registration. Adults over the age of 59 receive a 10% discount for lessons scheduled before 2:30pm Monday through Friday. These and any other discounts offered may not be combined.

TUITION ASSISTANCE

The Heartstrings Program provides need-based tuition assistance for students who cannot afford the full cost of registration. There are no forms required to receive tuition assistance. If you cannot afford the full cost of registration simply ask for tuition assistance when you register. Tuition assistance is awarded by term: Fall, Winter/Spring or Summer. When you register for future semesters please inform the registrar if you would like to continue receiving tuition assistance.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT BANK

The Heartstrings Program has approximately 250 instruments available for rental for students/families who cannot afford to buy or rent elsewhere. Instruments may be rented for any length of time. Rental fees are a sliding scale from $5 to $40 a month. If you need to rent an instrument please call or visit the Student Services Office, 303-665-0599.

MEDIA RELEASE

Unless notified in advance in writing, enrolled students/families give permission for CMF&RMCMA to record visually and/or aurally all lessons, classes, and other activities without advance notice, and to publish those recordings royalty-free in print, audio and electronic formats including but not limited to catalogs, brochures, print advertisements, grant applications, and the website.

EMERGENCY CLOSURES

If RMCMA closes for any reason a recording will be placed on the outgoing message of the phone system and every effort will be made to email students/families affected. All lessons missed due to emergency closure will be made up or credited to your account.

BUILDING RULES

There are countless individuals who work hard to make RMCMA an open and welcoming place for all. Please be respectful of people and property in our building. Please inform the office of any issue you have with or in our building. Adults are expected to model good behavior for the younger members of our community. As a courtesy to others, please walk and talk quietly when outside of lessons/classes. Wireless internet service is available in the building. The access code is posted around the building and is also available in the office.

SUPERVISING CHILDREN

Children are the responsibility of parents/caregivers outside of teaching studios and any time they are not in a lesson or class. To ensure your child’s safety, please pick him/her up promptly at the classroom/studio. Students ten years of age and younger must be supervised by an adult caregiver while waiting for lessons and/or classes to begin. Adults are expected to model good behavior.

DISMISSAL

RMCMA reserves the right to dismiss any student/family due to overdue tuition payments, noncompliance with policies or any reason determined to be a serious impediment to a successful musical experience.
