Getting Started: Placement for New Students . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . First, take a look at our offerings in this catalog or go to our website: www.COmusic.org (click on right side RMCMA/School). Students enrolling for a group or ensemble can accomplish that online, and those interested in individual or small group instruction may complete an information request there. However, especially for individual and small group lesson students or parents, it really begins by having a conversation/
consultation with our Registrar, Nancy Brace. She can give you detailed information and take you on a tour of our community music school, and also works to provide the best match between student and teacher. If your student has special needs or learning challenges, please let Nancy know. And we appreciate your understanding that during peak registration periods, it may take 7-14 business days to process the placement of a new student.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS
www.COmusic.org
Individual Lessons At the core of our program, learning one-on-one how to play or sing with an expert instructor is the best way to make progress, and our teachers tailor their approach to suit the individual student’s goals. Traditional individual instruction is appropriate for elementary-aged students through adults (for younger instruction on certain instruments, see the Suzuki description). Instruction is available for all woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, piano, and voice, as well as music theory and songwriting/composition. Styles include classical, jazz and popular music. The student is responsible for having an instrument; we have some used instruments available for a nominal rental fee, and recommend Lafayette Music for new instrument rentals. Piano students should have acoustic instruments, or touch-sensitive keyboards. Weekly lessons may be scheduled for 30, 45, or 60 minutes, and instruction may begin at any time during the year. Some teachers also hold monthly performance classes. RMCMA students are encouraged, though not required, to participate in scheduled student recitals throughout the year. An annual Honors Recital is held to give students an opportunity to experience the audition process. Regular communication between parents and instructors is essential in order to monitor student progress. Instructors are also evaluated by students/parents. NOTE: Individual lesson students enrolling in the Fall will automatically be enrolled through the Spring, with an “opt-out” opportunity by Fri., Dec. 10, 2010. This procedure eliminates the need for a “re-enrollment” period in the middle of the school year.
*Term dates: Fall (14 weeks): Sept. 8-Dec. 18 Winter/Spring (20 weeks): Jan. 3-May 28 * Average number of weeks is listed. The RMCMA is closed on some Monday federal holidays, and there is some variability with teacher schedules, due to their professional engagements. The Registrar will coordinate each individual student’s schedule. Day/Time: Monday through Saturday as arranged by office staff, with instructors. Dependent upon instructor availability. Tuition (annual reg. fee applies, see p. 12): 30-minute lesson - $26 45-minute lesson - $35 60-minute lesson - $47 Please note that tuition does not include printed music.
Suzuki Instruction for piano, violin, viola, flute, & cello
Suzuki instruction is primarily offered to young children (3-5), although adult beginners may also enjoy this method. In the 1950s, the late Japanese violinist/educator, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, saw parallels between young children learning to speak their native language and learning to play a musical instrument. The Suzuki method builds on the belief that all children are born talented. Our certified Suzuki teachers train the student’s ear before the eye: students are first taught basic listening and playing skills before note-reading is introduced, in the same way that children learn to speak and comprehend before learning to read.
Small Group Lessons/Classes
Vocal, instrumental, theory, composition and wellness instruction may be taken in groups of two to four students of similar ability. Grab some friends and start a group!
Group Piano Lab for Beginners
Our digital piano lab allows for two to four beginning students to be taught together. New concepts are introduced weekly, and the instructor monitors each individual student’s comprehension and technique. Students are first given an assessment to assure correct ability placement within a group. After two terms, it is appropriate for students to move to individual instruction. Classes are available for both children (45-min.) and adults (60-min.). New classes are formed at the beginning and the middle of each term.
This method involves a combination of weekly individual lessons and monthly group classes. Parents/caregivers play a key role, and will be given special orientation. The parent/caregiver must attend all individual lessons and supervise the student’s daily practice. Day/Time: Monday through Saturday as arranged by office staff, with instructors. Tuition See above Individual Lesson Tuition.
Chord Piano
For teens/adults; designed for students who wish to play popular tunes using a fake book. Learn to build chords and improvise an accompaniment to a melody. Scott Martin, instructor. Day/Time: Monday through Saturday as arranged by office staff, with instructors. Tuition (annual reg. fee applies, see p. 12): 45-minute lesson - $38 60-minute lesson - $50 Note: These rates are for 2-4 students, and the cost is divided among students. Tuition for larger groups is calculated separately.

The experiential approach develops each child’s basic musical competence in weekly 45-minute mixed-aged classes, with a maximum of twelve children. Participants experience singing, movement activities, and rhythm instrument play, led by a specially-trained early childhood music teacher. Each session, families receive a new recording of original compositions and traditional songs performed by professional musicians, along with a songbook full of pictures and activities to help the whole family learn and enjoy the songs at home. Dalcroze Eurhythmics Music from the Inside Out!
Dalcroze Eurhythmics is a physically active approach to musical understanding that was developed over 100 years ago by Swiss composer/educator Emile Jaques-Dalcroze for adults in the conservatory. This approach explores musical concepts by integrating physical movement as a link between the ear and the mind, and involves active listening, improvisation, and the spirit of play. Our Eurhythmics program has been adapted for students ages 4-6 and serves as an excellent bridge from early childhood classes such as Music Together. For children ages 6-13 the Rhythmic-Solfège sequence provides a challenging curriculum that will prepare students in a European tradition and is mostly intended for those students who are currently taking private lessons. Benefits include improved music reading skill, intonation, ensemble skills, knowledge of music theory, coordination, and an increased awareness of performance practice and aesthetics. Students who complete this program will be ready for any undergraduate/conservatory Solfège program. A detailed course outline is described on our website. Dr. Jeremy Dittus, instructor, has received the highest possible training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics in Geneva, Switzerland. Day/Time: Thursdays (scheduled at 2:30pm, 3:30pm, and/or 4:30pm, depending upon interested student availability) Because this class follows a special sequential learning curriculum, with graded exams, enrollment is in Fall 2010, and is a year-long commitment of 30 weekly 45-min. classes.

Community Outreach
RMCMA Ambassadors are student and faculty who perform at senior centers, service clubs, and other community functions. Faculty are also available for coachings, adjudicating, clinics, and performances in the public schools.
Making a Donation The majority of the tuition we charge goes to our fine faculty, so we need to raise a considerable amount of funds each year in order to remain open. We depend upon the community we serve— parents and friends, area businesses, and foundations near and far to help provide financial support for operational costs beyond faculty compensation, capital improvemnets and for our Heartstrings program. We very much appreciate every donation, and it's tax-deductible! Heartstrings The Heartstrings Program encompasses two of our most important community services: Need-based tuition assistance and the Musical Instrument Bank. The RMCMA subscribes to the philosophy of access to the arts for all, and provides financial aid and/or musical instruments for families in need. About 16% of RMCMA students receive some level of needbased tuition assistance. Our musical instruments go to children in 34 public schools, helping students who otherwise could not participate in their band or orchestra programs. The Gift of Music We welcome gifts of instruments, sheet music, books, and recordings in good condition.

Greetings!
As Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival, I’d like to introduce myself to the RMCMA community. I believe that our newly merged CMF & RMCMA is an exceptional community resource. I wouldn’t be here as a conductor if it weren’t for an encouraging family and talented, supportive teachers like we have on the RMCMA faculty. Decades of studies show that children with a great background in the arts are creative, grounded, and well-rounded adults who not only participate more in the arts but who also raise children who are arts appreciators. By being a part of CMF & RMCMA, whether you are a student of 3 or 93, you have a myriad of opportunities open to you. Music study through individual lessons or group classes and ensembles is available to students of all ages, abilities and means at the RMCMA. And in addition to the ongoing professional performances at the school, students can now connect with musicians from around the country and the world through concerts, workshops and masterclasses presented by the Colorado Music Festival every summer at Chautauqua in Boulder. I hope your experiences with CMF & RMCMA inspire you to a lifelong participation and appreciation of music. Sincerely,
Michael Christie Music Director, Colorado Music Festival

POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Policies and Procedures Registration & Fees:
A completed enrollment form, with registration fee and at least partial tuition payment, is needed before instruction may begin. An annual registration fee is charged at the time of enrollment: $25/ individual, $40/family.This fee is nonrefundable, unless the school has to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. Five easy ways to begin registration: online (www.COmusic.org): by phone 303-665-0599 x100; by mail; in person (200 E. Baseline Rd., Lafayette, 80026); or by fax 303664-5965. Registrar Nancy Brace is in the office Mon.-Fri., noon6pm. Enrollment forms are available in the office or online. Online registration is available for most group classes and ensembles, and an information form to begin the individual and small group lesson placement process is also available on the website. Register early to avoid disappointment! In order to keep the same day/ time for individual lessons, continuing students must register and make partial payment or set up payment plans by the following deadlines: Dec. 10 (for Winter/ Spring 2011), Apr. 2 (for Summer 2011), and May 27 (for Fall 2011). Individual lesson students enrolling in Fall 2010 will automatically be enrolled through May 2011, unless they notify the Registrar by Dec. 10.
Tuition Payment:
Although full payment offers the best value, it is possible to divide the tuition into two, four, or monthly payments. An installment fee of $10 per term will be added to the total tuition (waived for multiple enrollments). Students may also set up an auto-pay plan with the Office Manager. The balance of the previous term must be received before new term enrollment is allowed. We accept cash, money orders, checks,Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Penalty fee for returned checks: $25.
Delinquent Accounts: If tuition is not received by the last day of the term, a $10 late fee will be assessed. The RMCMA reserves the right to suspend or discontinue instruction of any student who is delinquent in fulfilling his/her financial obligations, and may also enlist the services of a collection agency. Financial Aid:
Need-based assistance is available. Call for more information and guidelines.
Lesson Scheduling, Proration & Wait Lists:
Enrollment for individual and small group lessons may take place at any time during the school year, subject to faculty and space availability. Early registrants and continuing students have the best choice of lesson times. Charges are prorated if students enroll after the term has begun. If a studio or class is full, students may ask the Registrar to place their names on a wait list.
Attendance/Absences/Make-Up Lessons:
Regular attendance is expected and is fundamental to student progress. Frequent absences, tardiness, demonstrated lack of interest or behavioral issues are grounds for student dismissal. All lessons/classes/rehearsals cancelled by instructors or due to inclement weather will be rescheduled, credited into the next term, or refunded. For individual lesson students, one make-up lesson per term (two total per academic year) is allowed for excused, advance-notice student absences (i.e. illness, school function, religious observance, etc.).
www.rmcma.org It is expected that students will notify their teachers (24hour notice unless emergency) of absences. (Note: as a courtesy to instructors & other students, please stay home if ill!) No other student absences will be rescheduled, credited, or refunded, and the student will be charged for the missed lessons. Two weeks are reserved for make-up lessons at the end of the school year (although some teachers will do make-ups within the terms, depending upon schedule/space availability).Teachers are required to make up to two attempts to schedule a make-up lesson. If a student misses a scheduled make-up lesson, it is considered unexcused, and is not credited to the student’s account. Lessons that cannot be made up by the close of the make-up weeks will be credited to the student’s account*. Student credits not used within one year will be cleared and not refunded. With the exception of Music Together, there are no make-ups for student absences in group classes. [*credits not applicable to student-initiated absences for tuition-assisted students.]
Holidays:
No instruction will be scheduled for Thanksgiving break, winter/holiday break, observed Monday holidays (see schedule on p. 2), and spring break.
Tardiness:
Due to busy faculty schedules, students who arrive late cannot be guaranteed full lesson times.Teachers will wait ten minutes for late students; students are asked to do the same for teachers. Shortened lessons due to faculty tardiness will be made up.
Withdrawals/refunds:
Tuition (less the non-refundable registration fee) will be fully refunded for withdrawal prior to the beginning of instruction (as a courtesy, students needing to withdraw are asked to do so at least two business days before the lesson/class is to begin). After instruction has begun, prorated tuition refunds (less the registration fee) will be given for withdrawals during the first three lessons/classes. New students (and continuing students switching to a new teacher) have the first three lessons to decide if it is a good student/teacher match. No refunds will be given after the third lesson or class. Students involved in sports activities are advised to consider this prior to enrolling for lessons, as no special arrangement can be guaranteed. In rare circumstances, students are allowed to withdraw after the fourth lesson due to medical reasons, accompanied by written notice from a physician. Group classes are subject to cancellation due to low enrollment, and the RMCMA will issue full refunds in those instances. At any time, teachers have the right to suggest that a particular student is not a good match for them, based on either ability level or behavioral issues. In those cases, the Registrar will work with the student family and another teacher to ensure proper placement.
Media Release
Unless notified in advance in writing, enrolled students/parents give permission for the CMF & RMCMA to photograph or audio/ videotape footage of classes, lessons, and other activities without advance notice, and to publish royalty-free in its print, audio and electronic promotions, including the website.
Weather/Emergency Closures:
If the Boulder Valley Schools are closed, the RMCMA is likely closed. Whenever possible, a voicemail recording will be placed on the office phone and a cancellation notice will be posted on our website. In case of a weekday afternoon storm, please call the office before 6:00 pm. In case of a weekday evening or Saturday storm (when the office is closed), teachers will contact students if lessons are cancelled.
