Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3 Jazz and the Orchestra with Michael Christie and the Festival Orchestra, featuring the brashly outrageous brass yawpings of Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs, and excerpts from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess - these tunes have become standards for jazz improvisation - and Copland’s 3rd Symphony, the very piece with which Music Director Michael Christie made his debut at the New York Philharmonic in 2008.

MADE IN AMERICA Sunday, August 2 Vibrant young conductor Alondra de la Parra conducts the CMF Chamber orchestra in a Made in America program that starts with just that - Joan Tower’s “Made in America” - and ends with classic American composer Aaron Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring. Also on this program is Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla’s Otoño Porteño and Invierno Porteño (two of four pieces Piazzolla wrote evoking the seasons of Buenos Aires), and jazz-influenced music by two Mexican composers, Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 4, and Eugenio Toussaint’s Danzas de la Ciudad.

East Meets West with Michael Christie, the CMF Festival Orchestra and Chinese Pipa virtuoso Wu Man performing the Colorado premiere of Tan Dun’s Pipa Concerto. Wu Man is a senior member of the Silk Road Ensemble that was founded by Yo-Yo Ma. This program also features the Colorado premiere of Behzad Ranjbaran’s Seven Passages from “Persian Trilogy,” and Dvor˘ ák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.”
Acclaimed soprano Jessica Rivera will make a highly anticipated return to the Chautauqua Auditorium stage (Rivera played the lead role in CMF’s 2007 production of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar) to join Michael Christie and the CMF Festival Orchestra in a continuation of CMF’s Mahler cycle with Symphony No. 4. Rivera, who has been hailed by the New York Times as a “vocally luminous young soprano,” will also sing in Samuel Barber’s glorious Knoxville, Summer of 1915.

The CMF Chamber Orchestra with conductor Michael Christie presents Whimsical Symphony, an evening of wonderfully playful music featuring Rossini’s “Il Signor Bruschino” Overture (the bow tapping is hilarious!), Mozart’s joyous Flute & Harp Concerto (can be heard on the soundtracks of four movies, including “The Joy Luck Club”), and Haydn’s Symphony No. 90, a piece that will surely get the last laugh!
An inspiring evening of music featuring Symphonic Legends with Michael Christie and the CMF Festival Orchestra. Sibelius takes us on a magical voyage following the escapades of Lemminkäinen, a character from a Finnish folktale, while Strauss’ magnificent Josephs Legende (The Legend of Joseph) and Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream round out the program.

Michael Christie and the CMF Festival Orchestra and Chorus will be joined by acclaimed vocal soloists Yulia van Doren, Soprano; David Portillo, Tenor; and Ashraf Sewailam, Bass-baritone, to close the season with Haydn’s monumental oratorio The Creation to mark the 200 th anniversary of Haydn’s death. The Creation is often considered Haydn’s greatest work through its bold use of orchestral color, adventurous harmony, exceptional rhythmic and melodic inventiveness, and overall unity, with an almost operatic vividness and power. A CMF Finale concert not to be missed!

The New York Times writes, “she has shown she is more than a virtuosic clone,” and a critic at the Gilmore Rising Stars Series notes that “Chen displayed almost frightening technical capabilities wedded to superior musicality.” Also on this all-Prokofiev program is Peter & the Wolf performed with the Colorado premiere of the 2008 Oscar - winning short film by British animator Suzie Templeton, and the Suite from “The Love for Three Oranges.”

Tuesday, July 21 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medallist Jon Nakamatsu returns to Chautauqua Auditorium for a performance of Grieg’s famous Piano Concerto in A minor. Friday, July 24 Michael Christie leads the CMF Festival Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 with Spencer Myer, Gold Medalist of the 2008 New Orleans International Piano Competition. Also on this all-Beethoven program is his Creatures of Prometheus. Written early in Beethoven’s career, this ballet recounts the story of the demigod Prometheus, who molds humans both literally, from clay, and intellectually, by endowing them with gifts of art and science. This lesserknown work of Beethoven’s is a treasure for music lovers!

Introduce young children ages 3-7 to the excitement of live classical music with an ALL NEW program that Magic Carpet Concerts: teaches kids about the instruments in the orchestra Going Places as they are taken on an imaginary journey to differSATURDAY, June 27, 10 a.m. & ent times and places. After each concert kids meet MONDAY, June 29, 10 a.m. costumed characters, participate in fun activities, enjoy cookies and juice and much more at a Music Fair on the Chautauqua Grounds. MONDAYS: Masterclasses
Emerging Musicians
for
Talented musicians ages 13-18 are selected via online application to perform in a public masterclass, and receive feedback and instruction from CMF’s professional titled players. The 2009 Masterclasses will feature Trumpet, Violin, Piano, and Oboe, and take place on select MONDAYS from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House. Masterclasses are FREE, and community members are encouraged to observe. WEDNESDAYS: Classically Kids Classically Kids is a series of fun, interactive workshops aimed at connecting kids ages 7-11 with the excitement of live orchestral music. Each workshop is linked to CMF’s Thursday Festival Orchestra concert, and includes an introduction to the music, the chance to meet the featured soloist, and a visit to the orchestra rehearsal. Workshop registration is $10/child, and includes a student ticket to the Thursday CMF concert, and a 50% discount voucher for one accompanying adult. Workshops take place each WEDNESDAY during the CMF season, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House. FRIDAYS: Family Fun Concerts CMF Orchestra musicians perform informal ensemble concerts designed for kids ages 4-8 on three FRIDAY afternoons at 2:00 p.m. during the season. 31- Woodwinds. These short 50-minute concerts take place in Chautauqua Auditorium and combine lively music with short demonstrations to introduce young children to the featured instrument groups and to the fun of live classical music. Tickets just $5!

The convergence of cultural programming within a stunning natural environment was an integral part of the Chautauqua movement of the late 19 th and early 20th centuries. CMF is proud to continue this tradition, and encourages concertgoers to explore the beauty of Chautauqua Park, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and indulge in the rich cultural programming available year-round. HOP 2 Chautauqua 4 FREE The Colorado Music Festival is committed to providing our patrons with convenient transportation options and parking solutions. We’re happy to once again work in collaboration with Go Boulder, Special Transit, the Colorado Chautauqua Association, and other partners to provide FREE shuttle service for all CMF performances. On nights of performance, two shuttles will run continuous loops, approximately every 15 minutes, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (9:00 a.m. for Young People’s Concerts) until concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., and reverse the process after each performance. One shuttle will loop from downtown, starting at 13th and Pearl, and up 9 th Street to the north side of Chautauqua Park. (Note: This route will require a short walk, uphill, from drop off on Baseline to the Auditorium.) The other shuttle will loop from the 27th Way Park ‘N Ride (at 27th and Broadway, just south of Basemar) up Baseline Road for drop off on the south side of the Auditorium. Both routes will include additional stops, marked by the Go Boulder symbol on RTD signs.

Parking in Chautauqua Park is limited. CMF encourages the use of the free shuttle. Parking is allowed on both sides of Baseline Road in the evenings during June, July and August. Parking for the disabled is available in the parking lot south of the Academic Hall.
