President’s Message
The “Off-Season” Celebrate the joy you’ve given to others Fellow PGA Professionals,
O
ne of the many wonderful things about Colorado is that we typically get to enjoy four distinct seasons - five if you consider the “off-season.” You know that time of year when those we serve inquire, “What do you do during the winter?”, somehow believing we take five months off. Regardless of your role, the off-season, conveniently coinciding with the holiday season, allows us to better reflect on what was and what may come. This may be more needed in 2020, as work, with all the hoops to jump through just to safely open the doors, may have taken more time, energy and effort than ever before. Each of us could dwell on the trials and tribulations, that is the COVID-era, and its effect on our businesses because there were ample. Instead, I would rather look at the amazing stories and successes that were a result of golf being the “only game in town.” How many of us heard the great number of positive statements from those we serve? Did you hear the parent who stated, “PGA Jr. League was a saving grace for my kid?” Countless others said, “Thank you for being open. I don’t know what we would do if there wasn’t golf.” Many commented, “I haven’t played in years, but I now remember why I love this game. Why did I ever quit?” Jim Hajek, PGA President Colorado PGA Head Professional Fossil Trace Golf Club jhajek@cityofgolden.net P | (303) 277-8752 C | (303) 746-7416
The one that had the greatest impact for me is, “Golf is the only normal in my life.” There is no question about it, golf was a safe-haven, a muchneeded escape for those we serve. Our facilities and the game allowed for a sense of calm, comfort and familiarity in a time when none of these were commonplace. We must not take what we do lightly as we have a far greater effect on people’s lives than we can possibly imagine. In 2020, whether we serve members, players, customers or guests … what we have done has, and will continue to have a profound impact on their lives … and ours, as well. During this holiday season, my hope is that you are able to enjoy time with friends and family and relax, recharge, renew and refresh. All of them continue to count on us to help bring stability to their world. Sincerely,
Jim Hajek, PGA Head Golf Professional President Colorado PGA Section 303-277-8752 (Work) 303-746-7416 (Cell)

Executive Director’s Message
Grateful For Your Support Have a Wonderful Holiday Season My Fellow Colorado PGA Members,
A
s 2020 is finally coming to a close, I purposely have taken more time than usual to reflect on the past year. None of us could have ever imagined living through a pandemic in our lifetime, none the less, believing that the Game of Golf would have its best year ever, except for when Tiger burst onto the scene in 1997. For me personally, it’s been filled with highs and lows, but the highs overwhelm the lows for sure. The one thing that this past year has taught me to do even more than I have ever done before is to focus on the positive. Things usually never go as exactly planned, and negative things usually show their ugly head from time to time. Family and Friends, they are most important – no matter what. And, I have always considered the Members of the Colorado Section Family. Your support of your PGA Section has never been more important or meant so much. Your support when the call went out to help your Section by paying your PGA Dues by the end of July was astounding. When we shared with you what was taking place with our business relationship with the CGA, your support was inspiring. As we look ahead to 2021 and what the future has in-store for each of us, please know that your Colorado PGA Section will be here to do whatever we can to support you, our family, the Members of the Colorado Section PGA.
Eddie Ainsworth, PGA CEO/Executive Director Colorado PGA eainsworth@pgahq.com C | (719) 761-6125
Let me encourage each of us to stay connected with each other during the Holiday Season. Especially those who might not have someone to share this season with. COVID restrictions may limit us in meeting together, but they cannot prevent us from checking in on one another. Please remember to ask yourself, Who’s Your Wingman, and who do I need to be a Wingman for? Together we can truly make this a Wonderful Holiday Season. From My Family to Yours, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Very Happy New Year!!! May God Bless Each and Every One of You. Thanks for the opportunity to serve. Very Respectfully,
Eddie Ainsworth, PGA CEO/Executive Director Colorado PGA 6630 Bear Dance Drive Larkspur, CO 80118 eainsworth@pgahq.com C (719) 761-6125

Nice to Meet You, Colorado! New Leadership, New Virtual Annual Meeting and Summit
W
ow, what a year 2020 has been! I think we can all safely say that we have never experienced anything like it before. If Colorado is anything like Utah, I am sure you all have never been busier and worked harder. Congratulations to all of you for making it through the 2020 season and I hope you can enjoy some downtime over the holidays with those you love. Hopefully, as we begin the 2021 golf season this Spring, we are almost to the other side of Covid-19. I know the golf industry played a big role in helping many make it through the last 9 months and you should all be commended for the effort and ingenuity it took to keep the game open. This past month, we held the first ever virtual PGA Annual Meeting. Jim Richerson was elected to serve as the 42nd President of the PGA of America during the meeting. Jim is Senior Vice President of Operations for Troon and a member of the Southwest PGA Section. John Lindert of Grand Ledge, Michigan, succeeded Jim as Vice-President, and Don Rea of Gilbert, Arizona, was elected as the new PGA Secretary. Also, at the annual meeting, Tim Rosaforte and long-time golf journalist was elected as just the 12th person to receive the designation of PGA Honorary Member for his outstanding contributions to the game of golf. As with so much over the past year, the 2021 PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit will be an entirely live online event on Monday, January 25. It is a first for this 35-year bi-annual conference. The good news is coaches can attend from the comfort of your home, golf shop or even practice tee. It looks to be a great day of learning from great instructors, highlighted by a keynote address from Coach Urban Meyer. To register for the summit you can click on this link, https://events.pga.org/event/2021-teaching-and-coaching-summit. It is a privilege to have been selected by my peers in the Utah Section PGA to represent District 9 for the next three years. I want to thank Ron Rawls for his service to our District and welcoming me to the Board as I shadowed him (mostly virtually) over the last 12 months. I look forward to the opportunity to be in Colorado soon to meet you all in person and attend your meetings. Until that time, please know that I am available to all of you should you ever need to reach out to me. My email is jbarnes@pgahq.com. West Chapter Update Chapter Award Nominations Due December 15 Colorado West Chapter PGA Members,

ven though 2020 was full of uncertainty and new challenges, I feel very fortunate that golf was positioned to provide a safe place for people to recreate and socialize amid the pandemic. Of course, the golf industry also benefitted financially. We have worked hard for many years to “Grow the Game.” Though the circumstances are unfortunate, the game grew by leaps and bounds this year. Now, more than ever, we must use this opportunity to maintain this demand for golf. While most of us in Colorado have some form of off-season, this is a great time to look at your player development programs and focus on how you can make golf easier for people to start playing and keep playing so our tee sheets are full for many years to come. I also want to mention how proud and thankful I was to work together with my peers in the PGA to help each other through this year’s challenges. The communication and support from the Section office was also outstanding, along with the support on a national level. Our network of PGA Professionals is a tremendous asset! Now is also a great time for our West Chapter Members to fill out the nomination form for our 2020 West Chapter Awards. I think everybody probably deserves an award this year, actually! It is often difficult to nominate someone for each award since we aren’t always familiar with what each of us is doing at our own facility and in our own community. However, I do believe that everyone appreciates being recognized for their hard work every now and then. If you haven’t already, please click on the link to nominate those PGA Members who you feel are deserving of an award for their efforts. If you feel that you deserve one of those awards, it’s ok to nominate yourself, too! https://coloradopga.formstack.com/forms/west_chapter_awards_nomination_form The West Chapter Cup Matches between Pros and Amateurs were played at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction on October 16. Three 9-hole matches were played, Fourball, Foursomes and Singles. Although it was tied after the first 18 holes, the Amateur team dominated the Singles matches to win 10.5 – 5.5. Thank you to our PGA Members Russell Aragon, Jim Cook, Ryan Hoynacki, Stacy Millard, Dan O’Shaughnessy, Darren Szot, Max Twarjan and Steve VanDyke for playing. Thank you to Tim Tafoya, PGA, and his staff at Tiara Rado for hosting the event. Also, I would like to thank Frank Wilkinson and Mike Knode for their efforts to put on this event. Funds raised through the matches support the Western Colorado Golf Foundation and their college scholarship program. Jeff Boyer, PGA

Jobs, Joy & Jingle (Bells) “Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” - Karl Barth
J
oy to the world; a festival of joy. The season of Joy is upon us; however you celebrate. In fact, based upon the holiday music I started hearing on the radio about three weeks ago, the season has been upon us for a while. What makes the holiday season so special for you? As a child, a big part of the holiday season was the anticipation of Christmas morning and racing my sister down the stairs to see what Santa Claus had put under the tree as we slept. As a father now, it’s about faith, family, teaching my children about the joy brought to the world by a Savior and seeing the look on my children’s faces as they greet Christmas morning with excitement and unadulterated joy. Wouldn’t it be nice if each day felt like Christmas morning or the first day of the Festival of Lights? What if each day we headed to the golf course or the office was approached with as much joy, promise, excitement and wonder as we approached the holidays? What if we found absolute joy in what we do? How much better could we serve others? How much better could we make ourselves? How much better could our lives and careers be? “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” - Steve Jobs As the year draws to a close, it’s a good time to evaluate why and how you do what you do. Ask yourself: 1) What parts of your career and your job bring you joy? 2) What about your career would need to change to bring more joy to your life or bring back the joy? 3) How can I help you with 1 & 2? It may seem odd to look to your job to bring you joy but think how powerful it could be if it did. What change could we make in the industry, in our community or even the world? It’s a joyous season. Let’s extend the season and make it a joyous career. Take time to answer the questions I posed and let’s get started in bringing joy to you, your loved ones and the world of golf. Here’s to Joy. Give Where You Live Colorado PGA Members Stepped Up to Support Colorado PGA REACH During this Day of Giving
D
ecember 8 ~ Colorado Gives Day 2020. This is a day when all Coloradans come together to support non-profits in our state, one of which is our own Colorado PGA REACH Foundation.
With a goal to raise $30,000 for the Foundation, this year a call went out to unite our fellow Colorado PGA Professionals to rally around the cause by joining The 100 Club. The 100 Club called for Members to show their support by donating at least $100. And, many did just that … and more … achieving nearly $35,000 in contributions for the programs of Colorado PGA REACH. “We want to thank all of you who found the means to support Colorado PGA REACH,” comments Cathy Matthews-Kane, PGA, Colorado Section Vice President and Officer Representative on the Colorado PGA REACH Board. “The programs of Colorado PGA REACH are wide-ranging and touch the lives of so many, from our youth and our veterans to providing an all-inclusive environment for diverse populations.” CEO/Executive Director of the Colorado Section, Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, is always in awe of the Colorado PGA family. “Even in this climate of uncertainty, when called upon, Colorado PGA Members never fail. Some gave more, while others gave what they were able, but every contribution is greatly appreciated showing that the spirit of giving is definitely alive and well in the Colorado PGA community. For our first time ever to ask our Colorado PGA Members to join The 100 Club, more than 50 Members contributed over $7,000.” If you missed donating during Colorado Gives Day and would still like to contribute, the Colorado Gives link is always available. Click here to give. As you plan your 2021 giving strategy, please consider supporting Colorado PGA REACH.

Young Female Leader and Caddie is Recipient of Women’s Leadership Scholarship Bella Iacovetta receives $2,500 Scholarship
I
sabella ‘Bella’ Iacovetta, a 4.31 student at Arrupe Jesuit High School in Denver, is this year’s recipient of the 2020 Colorado PGA REACH Women’s Leadership Scholarship. Observing, describing and identifying key leadership qualities during the progression of a pandemic was the essay topic presented to the 2020 Women’s Leadership Scholarship applicants as they competed for a $2,500 college scholarship. The responses offered by these young women showed great awareness and understanding of the environment around them. In part, Bella says, “They are selfless, have good communication skills, empathetic, confident, influential, courageous and respectful.” Arrupe Jesuit is a Cristo Rey High School known for integrating academics with work experience. Through this program, Iacovetta has worked with patients at an orthopedic spine center, volunteered with the City of Thornton Fire Department and worked with the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations Division. These exposures have helped her to discover her desire to pursue a degree in criminal justice that she can draw from in a career as a firefighter paramedic. She plans to attend Marquette University in Wisconsin in the fall of 2021. Iacovetta may be familiar to some in the golf industry as she has spent the last three summers working as a caddie at the Lakewood Country Club. A job, that according to Iacovetta was “a physically difficult job that provided great networking opportunities.” Besides all of this, she is active at her high school as a math and science tutor, captain of her basketball team, volleyball team member, prom chair and part of the homecoming committee, to name just a few. “Striving to be a leader is something that wakes me up in the morning because it lets me be the difference,” shares an insightful Iacovetta. “We may want to be liked by everyone but realistically, that will not happen. As long as we are doing the right thing, it does not matter what anyone else thinks of us.” “One of the key commitments of the Colorado PGA REACH Foundation is its dedication to the development, advancement and empowerment of women,” says Colorado PGA REACH spokesperson Sue Payton, President of SCI Aerospace, Inc . “Awarding a Women’s Leadership Scholarship to a young college age woman with a proven track record of academic excellence, leadership and community involvement is one of the ways we meet this commitment. “This year’s applicants were truly outstanding and included exceptional high school students from across the state. Their insights and examples of the confidence, empathy and critical thinking skills required to lead in unchartered waters and to do what is right no matter what the personal consequences might be, exemplified their strength of character. We congratulate all of our 2020 Women’s Leadership Scholarship applicants and look forward to more activities in 2021 that develop, advance and empower women,” concludes Payton.

Quarter Century Club Celebrating 25 Years of Service as a PGA Member
P
GA Members who have served the PGA of America with honor and pride for 25 years are elected to the Quarter Century Club. Their steadfast promotion of our great sport is recognized with a letter from the PGA President, a special Quarter Century Club certificate and a gold Quarter Century Club lapel pin. This month, the Colorado Section is proud to feature three Quarter Century Club Members; Joe Assell, Cary Callihan and Steve Samuels.
Joe Assell, PGA
President and CEO of GOLFTEC Where did you grow up? I grew up in Oswego, Illinois. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? In the town of Oswego, we lived across the street from Fox Bend, a public golf course, and I grew up playing golf there with my dad. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? My first job as a 12-year-old was at Fox Bend Golf Course for Leon McNair, PGA, who created a “Work for Golf” program, which allowed me the opportunity to be around the game and the business. I remained there through high school. McNair’s influence on me and his program propelled me to want to pursue a career in golf. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? A proud moment for me as a PGA Professional is having GOLFTEC give our Ten-Millionth lesson. What golf facilities have you been employed at and in what capacity? I have worked at six different golf courses including those through the PGM Program I attended. I had internships at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Illinois, the Golf Club of Tennessee, near Nashville, and at Cherry Hills Country Club. After graduation, I was offered the position of business manager and teaching professional to what was then a strip-mall storefront called Driving Obsession. It later became known as GOLFTEC and I have been there over 25 years. What do you feel is the most meaningful contribution to the game of golf you have made? Through GOLFTEC, it has been meaningful to elevate the standards for golf instruction across the country and elevate the quality of life for PGA Professionals. What hobbies do you have outside of golf? I enjoy mountain biking and skiing. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? My dream would be to play with the best ever - all at once: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam.

Head Golf Professional at Aurora Hills Golf Course Where did you grow up? I was born in Durango, Colorado, and grew up in Grand Junction. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? My dad was an avid golfer and introduced me to the game when I was young. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I started in the business picking range balls and washing carts in 1981 when I was 16. I loved everything about working at a golf course, so it was a natural progression for me to obtain my PGA membership after I graduated from college. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? I am proud of being associated with this great sport, along with my peers as being an “expert” in the game and business of golf. What golf facilities have you been employed at and in Cary Callihan, PGA, with his wife, Juanita, this year at a charity what capacity? tournament at The Bridges in Montrose. • Lincoln Park Golf Course, Grand Junction, CO Assistant Golf Professional • Quail Valley Country Club, Missouri City, TX Assistant Golf Professional • Weston Lakes Country Club, Fulshear, TX - 1st Assistant Golf Professional • Houston Oaks Golf Club, Hockley, TX - Head Golf Professional • Saddle Rock Golf Course, Aurora, CO - Assistant Golf Professional • Meadow Hills Golf Course, Aurora, CO - 1st Assistant Golf Professional • Aurora Hills Golf Course, Aurora, CO - Head Golf Professional What do you feel is the most meaningful contribution to the game of golf you have made? Managing a golf operation that caters to a wide diversity in demographics and making them all feel welcome and comfortable playing at my facility is the contribution to the game I have made. What hobbies do you have outside of golf? My wife Juanita and I like to travel. I also like to read and be outdoors. I’m an avid Denver Broncos fan. If you could have a dream foursome, who would it be and why? My dream foursome would be Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Lee Trevino. Jack was my hero as a kid and the ‘86 Masters is still my favorite golf tournament of all time. I was never a fan of Tom when I was younger simply because he beat Jack on a regular basis. As I became older, I began to appreciate how good of a player and ball striker that Tom was. To me, Lee Trevino is one of the all-time great personalities of the game.

Where did you grow up? I was born in Greeley, Colorado, and raised in Fort Morgan, CO. What was your first introduction to the game of golf? When I was eight years old, my dad and the Fort Morgan PGA Professional, Hal Douglass (father of Tour Player Dale Douglass), introduced me to the game. Why did you choose to become a PGA Golf Professional? I loved the game and worked in the golf shop when I was in high school. I also loved the business, especially instruction and running tournaments. What makes you most proud about being a PGA Professional? There are many reasons I am proud to be a PGA Professional. In the beginning, it was the challenge of Steve Samuels, PGA, and his wife, Lee Ann, on a recent becoming a PGA Professional, as only a small percentage motorcycle trip. of those who try actually make it. But I loved everything about the job: teaching, rules, running a great tournament, etc. When a weekend event went off without any problems or challenges, I took pride in that. Seeing a new club champion crowned that went through my Jr. Golf Program, makes me smile. People remembering what you do even if they don’t remember your name, is rewarding. 2020 Colorado PGA President’s Award Goes to Bob Longmire
T
he President’s Award is given annually to an individual who, through their efforts and contributions, has promoted and enhanced the PGA Professional, the Section and the game of golf and contributed to the betterment of the golf professional vocation. The recipient of the 2020 Colorado PGA President’s Award is Bob Longmire, originator of PGA Jr. League and Co-Founder of Doubles Golf. A long-time friend of the Section, Longmire has participated in many Colorado PGA events over the years, consulted for the PGA REACH Trustees Board, and with his wife, has donated funds for two homes to be given to military families through Colorado PGA REACH. Escaping the heat of the South, Longmire and his wife spend time in Colorado for a couple months each year. They enjoy doing what they can to support the Section, the REACH Foundation and the game of golf in Colorado. When asked how it feels to receive The President’s Award, Longmire replied, “I have worked for 46 years in the Sports and Entertainment industry. I work hard and feel as though I have accomplished a lot. This is the most gratifying award I have ever received. It is the first award of any kind that I have received in the world of golf … golf is my true love. To have, in some way, participated in developing programs that have helped the game grow and help the Colorado Section specifically, to receive the President’s Award, is a terrific honor. I feel humbled by it.” The career Longmire referenced began after his graduation from LSU. He started in the industry as a marketing executive and an announcer for the NBA team that before transferring to Utah had its start in New Orleans; the New Orleans Jazz. After the Jazz moved, Longmire moved to Atlanta to head up marketing for the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Team. He then spent time leading the marketing for the Omni Coliseum and was enamored with concerts. Longmire developed an agency, which for 11 years represented major concert artists all over the world. Longmire remarried and had a child in 1990, which prompted him to stop touring and get back into the sports industry. He became the Executive V.P. of a sports marketing agency in Atlanta, and then in 2000, he started his own agency, the LEJ Sports Group of which he is the Senior Partner. It is this agency that worked with organizations such as the NFL, MLB, NBA and more, in the development of youth programs.

Longmire with Jack Nicklaus at the 2020 United States Doubles Golf Am Championship at The Bear’s Club
About 10 years into the LEJ business, Longmire started the concept of a youth program for golf, the Jr. League program, which was later purchased by the PGA of America. In launching the PGA Jr. League, Longmire met Eddie Ainsworth, PGA, CEO and Executive Director of the Colorado Section, at a PGA show. The two discussed meeting again in person. Longmire’s son lives in Parker, Colorado, and so he decided to visit the Colorado Section and has since fallen in love with the area. That was the beginning of the relationship with the Colorado PGA. Longmire serves as Chief Executive Officer of League Golf, which was the founder of Jr. League, and co-founder of Doubles Golf with Tour Player, Jack Nicklaus. This new entity, Doubles Golf/2PG, means two-player golf, which is Doubles Golf. The 2PG is the name of the rating and ranking system used to rank and rate doubles teams.

Colorado PGA News “Doubles Golf is what we bequeath to the Sections. We are hoping to help them in the future. We believe that Doubles Golf is not only a phenomenal way for PGA Members to generate revenue for themselves and their Assistants at their Clubs, but it is also a revenue generator for the Sections,” states Longmire. “So, it becomes a business unit. We don’t charge them anything for it. We license the rights to the Section. All we do is manage the United States Doubles Golf Committee and we host the United States Doubles Golf Am Championship.”
Colorado PGA Honorary President, Ben Welsh, says of Longmire, “He has been a great partner in helping our Colorado PGA REACH Foundation accomplish some of our goals. His efforts to grow the game nationally are wonderful and the fact that he lives here locally in Colorado Springs (for a couple months of the year) has made the relationship here closer.”

GOLFTEC’s Josh Miller, PGA, Honored with Vic Kline Award Smith Award), so he then served on the Awards Committee to recognize the 2020 Colorado PGA Award winners. In addition to committees, Miller tries to be as active as possible with board meeting attendance and participation. When volunteers are needed for events, whether as a starter at the CO Senior Open or to play with a group at the PGA REACH Invitational, he participates every time he is available. Miller brings a unique perspective to the Colorado Board of Directors as he has had a variety of opportunities through his career. He has worked as an assistant professional at public and private clubs, worked as a head professional, taught independently at a club, worked retail at Dicks Sporting Goods and has experiences as a coach, manager, director and vice president at GOLFTEC. All of these events have aided in his ability to have the Colorado PGA Membership on his mind as he represents and serves the Section.
T
he Charles “Vic” Kline Award is presented annually to a member of the Section Board of Directors in recognition of outstanding service and leadership to the Section. This year’s recipient is Josh Miller, PGA, Vice-President of Operations at GOLFTEC. Miller is serving his second term on the Board and has been very involved since he was asked to serve. Familiar with serving on committees and running committee meetings, Miller ran for a board position to have more involvement in the Section. However, he didn’t win when he first ran several years ago. When a position opened after a member moved out of state, then Colorado PGA President, Leslie Core-Drevecky, PGA, asked Miller to fill the opening. His entire time on the Board, Miller has been either the co-chair or chair of the Education Committee. He was instrumental in bringing industry-leading presenters to Colorado to share their expertise at the annual Teaching and Coaching Summit, as well as in creating the Fall Teaching and Coaching Workshop to give many of our local instructors a platform to showcase their skills and knowledge. In 2019, Miller received the Professional Development Award (formerly the Horton

Miller states, “I like being able to work with some great PGA Professionals on the Board and form relationships over the years. Being able to see how the Section functions has been a great learning experience for me. The biggest thing I have learned is how a PGA Member can benefit from their membership in various ways and various times in their life/career.” Feeling very surprised and proud to win this award, Miller comments, “It is amazing to win an award named after such a respected PGA Member. Vic is someone I have been able to work alongside with on the Board in the last five years. Also, to be recognized by the Officers is such a huge honor as you know they have seen your dedication and hard work.” Colorado PGA Honorary President, Ben Welsh, PGA, says of Miller, “Josh has really stepped up over the past few years, taking great initiative with the Education Committee and working to elevate the profile of presenters in our major education events. He has also shown great leadership and engagement in our meetings. Josh always asks all the right questions and has weighed in with an opinion when necessary during many issues within his term.”

Eisenhower Golf Club to Host Colorado PGA Professional Championship
E
isenhower Golf Club – Blue Course, the Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed course located on the United States Air Force Academy, will host the 2021 Colorado PGA Professional Championship, the first time since 2011, on September 13-15, 2021. The Blue Course has played host to several prestigious tournaments over the years. This will also mark 20 years since September 11, 2001, when the 2001 Colorado PGA Professional Championship, in progress at Eisenhower Golf Club, was cancelled due to the events that occurred that day. “We are extremely excited and privileged to return to Eisenhower 20 years after 9/11,” said Eddie Ainsworth, CEO of the Colorado PGA. “I remember receiving the call that day as the PGA General Manager at Eisenhower, notifying us that America is under attack and that we need to close the golf course. It’s going to be very special for us to return 20 years later and, not only host our Section Championship, but also honor our Military during this event.” The Club, which has undergone several improvement projects over the past few years, including a new clubhouse, will also host a Pro-1 Am on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. This will be used as the only day for a practice round the week prior to the

Championship. Additional practice rounds can be scheduled prior to Labor Day. Registration for the Pro-1 Am will be limited to those registered for the Colorado PGA Professional Championship. Professionals will be paired with either Active Duty or Retired Military Personnel. The Ranch Country Club will host the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship, August 2-3, 2021. The Club, which annually hosts a section event, last played host to a championship, the Women’s Championship, in 2018. Again for 2021, the Championship moves two weeks earlier to create a gap between the biggest section event for Seniors and the CoBank Colorado Senior Open. Fossil Trace Golf Club returns to the schedule to host the Pro-Pro-Pro Championship. The threeperson scramble will be hosted on Monday, May 10, 2021. Returning to the schedule to host events in 2021 are Lakewood Country Club, Ptarmigan Country Club, Hiwan Golf Club and many others. Check the Colorado PGA website for updates to the tournament schedule as dates and events are finalized.

2020 Players of the Year Making the Most During a Pandemic Season Geoff Keffer, PGA Dow Finsterwald Colorado PGA Player of the Year Geoff Keffer, a PGA Assistant Professional from Lakewood Country Club, is being recognized as the 2020 Dow Finsterwald OMEGA Player of the Year. The award goes to the player with the highest cumulative total from the regular playing performance points list. With a modified playing season, due to COVID-19, the season opened with the Back2Golf Stroke Play event on June 1 at Valley Country Club where Keffer finished second with a 6-under par, three strokes behind PGA Life Member, Dale Smigelsky. Returning to Valley on June 22, Keffer finished first at the Valley CC Stroke Play event, this time it was him who finished with a 9-under-par. But Keffer wasn’t done playing at Valley for the season. The third time proved to be the charm for Keffer where he claimed $10,000 and the title to the Colorado PGA Professional Championship, finishing 67-67-69-203. This not only sealed his Player of the Year points, but also qualifies him to play in the 54th PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on April 25-28, 2021. Playing in 20 Colorado PGA events for the 2020 season, Keffer placed first in the Professional Contest at three other events; the Inverness Pro-Am on July 27, the Greeley Country Club Pro-Am on August 24 and the West Chapter Aspen Glen Golf Club Pro-Am on August 25. Notably, his third-place finish at the National Car Rental Colorado PGA Assistant Championship earned him a qualifying spot in the National Championship, which was just played November 12-15, 2020, at the PGA Golf Club. This is the sixth time Keffer has claimed the Dow Finsterwald OMEGA Player of the Year title, making him the most decorated Colorado PGA Player of

the Year. Ron Vlosich held the title five times in the late eighties and early nineties. Keffer’s titles are in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. He also claimed the Associate Player of the Year titles in 2010 and 2011.
Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA OMEGA Senior Player of the Year Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA Instructor from Snowmass Club, has earned the OMEGA Senior Player of the Year title. This is awarded to the PGA Member, over the age of 50, with the highest cumulative total from the Senior playing performance list. Rohrbaugh had quite the 2020 year, which started out making headlines in late February when he and his wife had to alter their Asian travel plans. “A trip of a lifetime becomes an escape from the Coronavirus for Colorado PGA’s Doug Rohrbaugh.” The altered plans continued as the virus, hail and fire canceled events throughout Colorado this season, but Rohrbaugh still managed to play in 19 Colorado PGA events. His wins include the season-long Match Play, West Chapter Pro-Pro Championship at Ironbridge on July 7, Pro-Lady at Red Rocks on July 13, Cheyenne CC Pro-Am on August 31 and the Pro-Scratch Championship at Meridian on October 19. Though he may not have won the event, he took first for his division in the Inverness Pro-Am on July 27, the Hiwan Pro-Am on September 21 and the West Chapter Championship on October 5-6. Other notable finishes came at the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship where he took second after a playoff with Jeff Hanson. This earned him a qualifying spot in the Senior PGA Professional

Tournament News Championship, which was held at the PGA Golf Club in October of 2020. His third place-tie finish at the Colorado PGA Professional Championship earned him a qualifying spot to play in the 54th PGA Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club in April of 2021. Rohrbaugh’s consistency throughout the year was a highlight for him. “Winning the regular Match Play Championship back-to-back and for the fourth time felt pretty good,” he commented. Rohrbaugh is now the most decorated Senior Player of the Year, setting a record for the number of times claiming the title. This is Rohrbaugh’s sixth time winning the Senior Player of the Year having earned it in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019. He also won the Dow FInsterwald Player of the Year title in 2018.
Sherry Andonian, PGA Women’s Player of the Year Sherry Andonian, PGA Instructor at Valley Country Club, has earned the Colorado PGA Women’s Player of the Year title for the third consecutive year. Andonian competed in 18 Colorado PGA events in 2020. She was the highest-ranking woman in several of those events and had a great month in July. Her top finishes include the Fort Collins CC Pro-Am on July 6, the Pro-Lady at Red Rocks CC on July 13 and the Inverness Pro-Am on July 27. The competition at Inverness was something to remember. Andonian states, “The highlight of the year for me was a hole-in-one during the Inverness Pro-Am on hole number 11. It was a high, towering, beautifully struck 7-iron that landed about 2 inches long and 2 inches left of the hole, then backed up and disappeared into the hole. I even told my Pro-Am team before I hit that it was ‘a perfect yardage and could go in.’ Too funny.” An avid tournament player, Andonian had other memorable moments during the 2020 season that didn’t include competing. One such was in August when Andonian caddied at the National Car Rental Colorado Assistant Championship for Caine Fitzgerald, PGA, and Geoff Keffer, PGA.
December 2020
Later in October, Andonian and Keffer were paired together for the Doubles Golf Professional Championship on October 12. This is competition, but it is also designed to be a fun event. Always seen with a smile, Andonian has reason to celebrate as she continues to be a forceful leader of women’s golf in Colorado.
Seth Zacks Associate Player of the Year Seth Zacks, Assistant Professional at The Club at Ravenna, has earned the 2020 Associate Player of the Year designation. Zacks played in eight Colorado PGA events this shortened 2020 season, ending with the West Chapter Championship for the playing performance points list. The Ranch Country Club Stroke Play, on June 8, was a wellplayed event for Zacks where he carded five birdies. When asked about the year and receiving this award, Zacks replied, “Congratulations to Ben Lanting for gaining Class A Membership this year and giving the rest of us Associates a chance. In all seriousness, it was a great honor to receive the 2020 Associate Player of the Year Award, especially in a year as wild and busy as 2020 was. I feel very fortunate and humbled by this award and I look forward to competing in 2021 and beyond. “2020 will also be my last year as an associate (Level 3 test on December 1), so when I saw the standings towards the end of the year, I consciously made a run at the award. While I had some success, there was no real defining moment in my season. In fact, I feel there is room for massive growth in my golf game and that makes me excited for the future.” Some of the other events in which Zacks competed include the season long Assistants Match Play and Match Play Championship, as well as the National Car Rental Colorado PGA Assistants Championship and the West Chapter Championship. Zacks commented, “My favorite part of the season was getting to play with so many great people. The Colorado Section is a special one and I cherish the opportunity to associate with so many great PGA Professionals.”

Colorado PGA Jr. League 2021 Captain Registration Now Open
W
e’re excited to announce that Captain registration for PGA and LPGA Professionals is open! Before registering, keep reading to learn more about the enhancements being introduced to the program for the 2021 season and what’s in store for 2022 and beyond. First, it’s important to understand that the context many of these enhancements were created was within the American Development Model (ADM) for Golf. If you’ve completed your ADM certification through PGA.Coach, you’re familiar with its core principles, developed through the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). To keep kids engaged in our sport is to understand their individual developmental levels and tailor coaching tactics to motor and foundational skills first. If you haven’t completed the free ADM training, you can do so in just a few hours at PGA.Coach. KEY CHANGES FOR 2021 The PGA Jr. League program enhancements revolve around two areas: Creating more local league flexibility for you to design programs that fit your needs (like lowering the official league minimum to 24 players) and adjustments to the postseason to align with ADM (including implementing a minimum All-Star age of 10 and adding 17u postseason opportunities). View the Summary of 2021 Changes and let us know if you have any questions. If you are interested in being a PGA Jr. League Captains or Coach for the first time, we also have more information on PGAJrLeague.com.
GETTING REGISTERED Before you register, we have created a tool to help you prepare for the 2021 season. The Pre-Registration Planning Tool below will walk you through how to better align the price of your program with the value you are delivering, as well as planning out some of the more intricate details of how your program will run. If you are ready to register as a captain now, it is open, and you can use the button below. Remember, you don’t need to do it right away, but player registration will open late January, so please make sure to start the planning process. Anthony and Sam are available to help if you would like. COLORADO LEAGUE PLANNING WEBINARS As league formation can vary between different parts of the Section, Anthony and Sam will be hosting geographically relevant webinars in January to help you plan for the 2021 season and go into more detail on these changes. We will also be hosting a general information webinar for those looking to get started for the first time. Keep an eye out for those invitations soon.

On To The Next Level By Gary Baines

mma Bryant (DU), Jordan Jennings (CSU), Aubri Braecklein (Georgia State) among Coloradans committing to play college golf. Emma Bryant of Aurora and Jordan Jennings of Montrose have been committed to their college golf destinations for more than a year. But that was verbally. The two Coloradans have had the opportunity to make it official that they’re remaining in the Centennial State to play at the next level. The two state high school individual champions — Jennings won the 4A title as a Montrose senior last month and Bryant prevailed in 5A as an Eaglecrest freshman in 2018 — will be joining strong NCAA Division I programs beginning next fall. Jennings is headed for Colorado State University and Bryant for the University of Denver. Jennings will be a CSU teammate of Bryant’s older brother, Davis. The CSU men had won three team titles when last season was cut short by Covid-19 safety concerns in mid-March and the Rams ended up ranked 16th to 19th in the national polls. The DU women finished 42nd to 44th in the national rankings. Bryant and Jennings aren’t the only Colorado junior golfers headed for NCAA Division I programs next fall. Joining them is Aubri Braecklein of Northglenn and Jefferson Academy, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s 2020 Girls Player of the Year, who is bound for Georgia State. Sloane Post of Centennial and Arapahoe High School will play for Northern Colorado. Bryant, who’s part of the Hale Irwin Player Program at CommonGround Golf Course, won a JGAC major title to cap her 2020 season, prevailing in the JGAC Tour Championship last month. It was her second JGAC victory of the year and her second ever in a major, to go along with the 2017 Colorado Junior Match Play. In other JGAC majors this year, Bryant placed third in the Colorado Junior PGA and fourth in the Colorado Junior Amateur. She also won the women’s division of the CGA Western Chapter Championship. Bryant represented Colorado in the 2018 Girls Junior Americas Cup competition. “I’m really excited to have signed my (National Letter of Intent) to DU,” Bryant said in an email. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity that coach (Lindsay) Kuhle has given me and I’m looking forward to playing for my home state, Colorado, in crimson and gold. The program, facilities, and academics at the University of Denver are outstanding and I can’t wait

to push myself and my future teammates to be the best. The DU women’s golf team is only improving, and I’m so pumped to get onto campus and better my game.” As for Jennings, in addition to the 4A state high school individual title he won this year by four strokes, he helped Montrose claim state team championships in 2017, ’18 and ’19. In JGAC action this year, Jennings finished eighth in the Colorado Junior Amateur, ninth in the Colorado Junior Match Play and won the Western Junior Championship. “I love the program at CSU with a great coaching staff and unbelievable facilities,” Jennings said in a Tweet released by the Rams’ golf program. “I am excited for CSU to be my home for the next four years.”
Jordan Jennings of Montrose, a month removed from winning the 4A state high school individual titlem, is officially bound for CSU.

I) Trey Kuntz of Sterling (Sterling HS) — Northeastern JC (Junior college) Morgan Palermo of Parker (Ponderosa HS) — Oklahoma City University (NAIA) Aubri Braecklein, winner of the 2020 CGA Women’s Stroke Play, will play her college golf at Georgia State.
In Braecklein’s case, a big 2020 no doubt helped land her at a Division I program — just as a former Jefferson Academy golfer, current LPGA player Jennifer Kupcho, earned a spot at DI Wake Forest. Braecklein made some history in June by winning the CGA Women’s Stroke Play at age 17 as she became the youngest champion of that event in more than a dozen years, before which detailed records weren’t kept. Though Braecklein didn’t win any of the JGAC majors in 2020, she notched three runner-up finishes, placing second in the Colorado Junior Amateur, the Colorado Junior PGA and the JGAC Tour Championship. She was also ninth in the Colorado Junior Match Play. Braecklein won two JGAC tournaments in 2020 and was never outside of the top 10 in an Alliance event. She won the JGAC Tour Girls points race by a whopping 682 points. The National Letter of Intent signing period runs through August 1. This year’s recruiting process has been altered due to Covid-19, with the NCAA suspending in-person recruiting until at least January 1 for Division I programs. Below is a list of Coloradans and JGAC members who have signed NLIs or have committed to play college golf for specific programs. This list will be updated.
