MONDAY WRAP Western Province Chinese Association July 21 2014
Nelson Mandela Day For the first time, South Africans will join together and celebrate Mandela Day without the great man who inspired the occasion. Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day, is held on July 18 each year. The day remembers Mandela’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation. Mandela Day is a global call to action for citizens of the world to take up the challenge and follow in the formidable footsteps of our former president. This day inspires individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, by building a global movement for good by dedicating and volunteering just 67 minutes of their time to any good, charitable cause.
Lady Precious Stream In 1978 the Cape Town Chinese Sports Association (now WPCSA) decided to produce a play. Mrs Reyneke, the Cape Town Chinese School teacher, agreed to produce the play and ‘Lady Precious Stream’ was selected. The play had been produced by the PE Chinese Sports club and thus their costumes were shipped over to Cape Town to be reused where possible. The sets for a Chinese style play are minimal and Godfrey Gin, studying architecture at that time, volunteered to produce the backdrops required. Sipmon Essen volunteered to take the photographs and produced large (23x39 cm) pictures to post on the walls and foyer. Play reading was held in the classrooms until stage rehearsals started. Mrs Ryneke invited her friend, Pieter Dirk Uys, to show Tunie Chin Loy the art of stage makeup. He arrived for one dress rehearsal and did all the make-up. A key change was removing the natural brow and moving it higher up. Little did we know how famous he was to become and thus no photo was taken of him doing our make-up. Shows were held in June at the Cape Town Chinese Association Hall in Mowbray and the tickets cost 50 cents.
Somehow, we were invited to stage the play for one night under the auspices of CODS (Camps Bay Operatic & Dramatic Society) at their theatre (now redeveloped as Theatre on the Bay). This was held in July and followed up by two more shows at the Association. The actors ranged from school pupils, students, to senior members. The most senior participant being Mr Bertram Lee who spoke BBC English. The youngest two, Valerie Hoy (nee Chong) as a wild goose and Eddy Lee Pan as a props holder. The play generated much excitement in the community, but the effort required lessened the enthusiasm to produce more plays. A recent visitor, Joy Clue, participated as the mother. Refer Wrap 23 June for recent pictures of Godfrey Gin on his recent visit and Sipmon Essen and Joy Clue (nee Lee).
