Santa CATALINA ISLAND HISTORY People have lived on Santa Catalina Island for at least 7,000 years. The Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived on Santa Catalina Island on October 7, 1542. When the first Europeans arrived on Santa Catalina Island, the people living here called their island Pimu and themselves Pimungans (or Pimuvit). By the mid-1820s, the few Pimungans left migrated or were moved to the mainland. Santa Catalina Island was awarded by Mexican Governor Pio Pico to Thomas Robbins as a land grant in 1846. The oldest fishing club in the United States was founded in Avalon in 1889. In 1892 the Banning brothers purchased Santa Catalina Island. In 1919 William Wrigley Jr. purchased controlling interest of Catalina Island.
