COLOR STORY [WW\PQVO JT]M ^QWTM\ Imagine a warm sunset on the beach after a beautiful Summer’s day. Relaxing to the gentle sway of a hammock as the cool breeze caresses your skin enveloping you with the scent of the ocean. As you are looking out to the horizon you can see the indigo night sky slowly overwhelming the orange glow of the sun. Let this story take you away to your favorite getaway. You know, that hidden beach with nothing but the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline. The beach where all you can feel is the breeze on your skin and you can get all of the umbrella drinks you want. Where rest and relaxation are the only things on the itinerary. Where all of your cares and worries blend with the sand. At the end of each day, the sun gives way to the ocean and creates the brilliant blue violet sky that gives you peace of mind knowing that the next day will be just as good as the day before.

INTRODUCTION [WW\PQVO JT]M ^QWTM\ When most people think of indigo, they would probably think of the dye and fashion. For me, I think of a beautiful relaxing sunset on the beach. According to color psychology, the color indigo is responsible for opening up the third eye and helps promote deep concentration during times of meditation and introspection, in turn helping a person to “achieve deeper levels of consciousness. This is perfectly in tune with my idea of the color. It is a serene color that is very soothing and very sensual. In my first mood board, I represented this with relaxing images of beach scenes and sunsets. In the second mood board I used images of a cooler blue violet hue to represent the serenity of the color. The many flowers I have included help to give a sense of calm and being in tune with your surroundings and relaxation. Some of the positive meanings of the color that relate to the theme I have chosen are calmness, serenity,

10

cleanliness, fresh air, subconscious, calming, and contemplative. All of these meanings can be related back to the thought of laying on a beach or just relaxing and meditating. The hue that was chosen for my mood board also creates these positive meanings in that it is not harsh or very bright at all and in turn, it creates a sense of calm and meditation. Culturally, the color blue and indigo are used a lot in many different ways. The two ways that I found to work the closest with my theme are the Native American and Japanese uses. The Native Americans believed that the color Indigo/Blue meant to use intuition to serve and teach. I feel that this meaning also symbolizes using a higher consciousness. The Japanese used Indigo in a lot of their artworks and clothing to symbolize the ocean that surrounds the islands. This was not to symbolize entrapment or the idea of being stranded, but rather recognizing your surroundings and feeling in touch with them.

INSPIRATION [WW\PQVO JT]M ^QWTM\

This color symbolizes midnight and is kind of a sensual color. When I think about it, I think of how the night sky looks with just the stars and the moonlight. It also kind of reminds me of fairy tales or imaginary and mystical things. Blue violet represents religion, spirituality and intuition. As a Chakra, it represents the third eye which is clearing the

subconscious to channel intuition, to see divine perfection in all things and devotion. It indicates intuition, mysticism, and understanding. Some personality traits associated with this color are: intuitive, fearless, practical, idealistic, wise and a truth seeker. In the Bible, this color symbolizes heavenly grace and the Virgin Mary was often depicted wearing it.

ALBER’S STUDY M`XTWZI\QWV QV KWTWZ This was one of the first studies done in the class. The goal of the assignment was to find a gray and another color with the same value so that when you squint, all of the colors seem to blend. This helped me to see how the color works with other colors of the same value and also helped to figure out the best matching for the color harmonies. Also the combination of the three colors creates a color palette of its own and has a sort of serene calming effect.

COLOR WHEEL M`XTWZI\QWV QV KWTWZ The color wheel is really important for understanding color. It was really helpful to do this project with the found object color wheel. I never knew that I had so many different colors around me. It’s also nice to see how they all work together and how the various color harmonies operate in the color wheel. By looking at the color wheel I can see how all of the cool colors operate together to create the soothing effect that I wish to create for this book.

METALLICS & NEUTRALS JT]M ^QWTM\ OWTL For this color palette I wanted to have the metallic be the pop of color. Because they other three colors are muted blue violets the gold manages to create a nice contrast from those colors. I chose the three neutrals because I felt that they were more on the side of relaxing and calming colors. They also remind me of the night sky. The gold also reminds me of the light in the sky as the sun is setting, hence the name “golden light. This color palette can be used in several different ways. One being that it would be nice for a bedroom or bathroom where one is more likely to relax. Because the gold is a light color it would decrease the darkness of the other colors and bring light to any room.

ANALOGOUS JT]M ^QWTM\ ^QWTM\ JT]M Analogous colors are those that are next to each other on the color wheel. The colors next to blue-violet are blue and violet. This color palette shows various hues of the analogous colors which come together to make a nice pale color palette. Analogous colors are the most harmonious colors on the color wheel and that can definitely be seen here. This color palette is probably the easiest one to bring into daily life to create that soothing mood in any room or in daily wardrobe. It is stunning how the lighter colors blend with the darker colors to create a perfect harmony of calm.

COMPLEMENTARY JT]M ^QWTM\ aMTTW_ WZIVOM Complementary colors are those that are opposites on the color wheel. In this case the complement is a brighter hue. Both of these colors work well together because the vibrancy of the yellow-orange helps to brighten up the darkness of the blue-violet. In this color palette, the colors come together to create the perfect beach scene wherever you wish to go. From the sand dunes to the tinted water, every part is represented with this color palette.

SPLIT COMPLEMENT JT]M ^QWTM\ aMTTW_ WZIVOM Although the split complementary colors of blue-violet are bright in hue, they tie in nicely with the deeper calm of blue-violet. All three of these colors come together each night to bid the sun adieu and welcome the deep blue-violet hue of the night sky. In this color palette though they are more like a sandy beach or as shown, a yoga studio with a nice added pop of blue-violet.

TERTIARY TRIAD JT]M ^QWTM\ aMTTW_ WZIVOM ZML WZIVOM This tertiary triad mixes a range of colors that are both warm and cool. The two warm colors, orange and yellow help to warm up the hue of blue violet used here, but the tint of yellow helps to tone the other three shades back down. This harmony reminds you of a sunset in that it contains all of the colors that are in the night sky as the sun is setting. As shown in the image, from the blue violet color all the way to the yellow tint, there is a gradient that is created naturally.

MONOCHROMATIC \QV\[ WN JT]M ^QWTM\ The monochromatic color palette that I have created is meant to represent the way the light from the sun shines on the ocean as the sun goes down. The palette works to create a gradient effect, but comes together to create a nice soothing effect that can be used in multiple ways. Because the colors are less saturated, they work the best together of all of the color palettes and are very harmonious.

TEXTURE

TEXTURE [KMV\ WN \PM WKMIV

When developing this texture palette, I wanted to show the colors of the sunset as well as the textures that reminded me of a beach. Being a frequent beach goer, the beach has become one of my favorite spots to relax and soak up the sun. This set of textures is sure to take you away to your favorite beach and make you reminisce of all of the enjoyable moments that you partake in at the beach. Smell the ocean, hear the waves crash and feel the sand between your toes.

Inspired by all of the relaxing textures that one might find at a spa, I tried to emulate those in color form. The colors chosen reminded me of floral decor and the tan interior that usually exists inside of most day spas. These colors are carefully chosen to create an environment that is meant to relax the patron and give them colors that are soothing and easy on the eyes.

PATTERN UW\QN LM^MTWXUMV\ Thinking of the soothing feeling of waves, I came up with this motif. When creating the motif, I considered more of the pattern it would make if it were multiplied rather than the individual piece itself. By having sharp and curved points I was able to make various shapes throughout both patterns that I have created.

PATTERN KZI[PQVO _I^M[

This pattern took the simple motif and gave it a wave effect. By adding color to this pattern, it helps to bring out the various shapes and forms that can be found. Color also helps to not see the pattern as individual pieces, but as whole figures. This achromatic pattern creates waves throughout which helps to sooth the viewer. When adding color to this pattern, it really brings it to life. Depending on the saturation and hues chosen, a different mood is created. In the first color pattern, I used a bright hue of yellow orange. This color made the design more lively and playful. By toning down the hues in the second color pattern, it is a more soothing and relaxing pattern that would be more suitable for a space such as a bathroom or kitchen area.

DIMENSIONAL PATTERN

[KMV\ WN \PM WKMIV

When I was putting this pattern into motion, I thought that it would look nice in a bathroom or as the focal point of a room. By putting it on the tiles of this bathroom wall it adds a nice accent of color as well as an effect that will remind the viewer of a nice exotic getaway.

PATTERN

]VLMZ \PM [MI

For this pattern the motif was used in a different way to create a sort of flower shape. By overlapping the “flowers, It allows light to flow through the pattern and creates a different space for the user. Rather than a wave effect it creates more of an effect that happens when light shines through the overlapping leaves on the trees. This is one of those relaxing moments that people relish throughout the day. When color was added to the pattern, it created more of the effect that you see under the ocean looking up towards the sky. Yet another calming moment that the world has to offer.

TRANSPARENCY

TQOP\ JT]M ^QWTM\

Throughout this book you have read about blue violet’s role in the sunset. The color interacts differently with various light sources and creates a variety of beautiful colors that in turn create various moods. In this study, I explored how the color intereacted with other tints of blue violet when lit from underneath. I wove the colors together and it creates a nice monochromatic color palette that could easily relate to the way the sun interacts with the color during sunsets.

FINAL THOUGHTS KWVKT][QWV

My hope for this book is that you have learned to incorporate blue violet into your life as a way to relax. I hope that I have reminded you of how beautiful the sunset is and that you take the time out of your busy days to enjoy it. I hope that it took you far away to your favorite destination or even enticed you to visit a spot where you can relax and just enjoy the sand between your toes, the wind in your hair, the waves crashing on the shore line and of course blue violet over taking the daylight and cooling down the night.
