To my mother Adelina and my mentor Patricia Greenfield. Also special thanks to Michelle Hinebrook for waking me up to the beautiful world of color and to my classmates from her color workshop who I enjoyed exploring color with.

Yellow is versatile. It is beautiful. It has style, and most of all it sticks out like a sore thumb. Of all the colors it is the most noticeable and used to attract and draw attention.

Public space: Though it may be found in many settings it can be found in the public as a governmnet agent of rule and regulation set out to control human behavior.
Because it is a color that pops out, yellow is used to subtly communicate with us through signs and symbols. Above is an illustration of a symbol system that Americans psychologically process and understand.

Some members of society lash out at the rules and regulations set forth by authority. The only means to demonstrate oppression is through counter authority acts of vandalism on the same public space that is used to regulate human behavior.

Yellow can be found on the surface of steel, plastic, concrete and walls. Most of these textures are rough and hard with a cold feel to it.

Patterns
This pattern was inspired by popular left wing liberalism and the many ideologies that fit under the umbrella. There is a symbol of a spray can in the mariad of other symbols.
This is a pattern of spray cans and tips. Yellow is the accent color. If it were not for yellow’s brightness it would hardly be noticed with the mariad of colors.
A pattern of the well recognized bathroom signs that signal gender. It is a pattern that reminds us of how dependant we are to cultural symbols as a means to know things in our surroundings and to act on those symbols as we share public space in an orderly and rigid fashion.
This pattern begins with tall jagged buildings made of mustard yellow, bronze, crimson red and cerulean blue. The rest of the pattern is of rigid regtangular heads that that are made with the same colors as the buildings.
THE PACKAGE This final product shows applications of the pattern in everyday use. It shows how we derived yellow in our environment as a tool of control and it’s transformation into a tool for freedom of speech.
Finally, yellow grows on a person. It is not only a government machine but a beautiful element that exists in so many different forms. When I was first introduced to yellow I instantly hated it but because of the color workshop and all of the studies I have done on Yellow I was able to see it in so many different ways. The workshop changed my perception of color, yellow in particular, and I honestly feel as though it was a magical wonderful experience.
