Who is
?
The Colosoul Group Inc. began in 2005 as a response to the growing need for hands on youth participation within the arts and media industry. With the difficulty of attaining the right skill development due to the lack of mentorship available, Colosoul opened its doors to youths aged between 13-25 years old. Over the years, Colosoul has helped hundreds of youths to find a pathway that best suits their individual personality through giving guidance, encouraging self-confidence and empowerment. Colosoul enables youths to be expressive though the arts whilst mentoring them within business, marketing and leadership roles. We also pride ourselves in building our social enterprises alongside our mentorship programs and encouraging small business initiatives. These unique facets of the organisation mean Colosoul is able to support the ever growing ideas of those involved and it is exactly how Colosoul has evolved over the years.

ARE YOU AN
ADULT ?
Article by Alison Lesley
Being in your twenties is a weird time; half of your friends will still be sleeping in their childhood bedroom, while the other half are having children of their own. At what age are you truly an ‘adult?’ Perhaps it’s at eighteen, when you can drink and be tried in an adult court (although hopefully not on the same day). Perhaps it’s at twentyone, which traditionally marked the final trial for a boy becoming a knight (Great Race, 2016). Or could there be other definitive markers of adulthood?

SOCIAL MAKING A PHONE CALL:
PARTAKING IN THE FAMILY GOSSIP:
Why do millennials fear phone calls? Is it the immediacy? Many will find alternate ways to find information, book appointments or order food so long as they may avoid the dreaded phone call. If you thought making phone calls was bad, try receiving unsolicited ones. Who’s calling? What do they want? Why couldn’t they just text? If you can make a phone call without pre-rehearsing what you are going to say, you might just be an adult. Bonus points for showing up to the doctor appointment that you booked all by yourself.
It’s an exciting occasion when you finally understand all the decades old drama behind why you hardly ever see those cousins anymore. If you’re old enough to have your say as to why Aunty Karen is never invited to things, you might be an adult.
LEAVING THE HOUSE AS A MESS:
GETTING EXCITED ABOUT THAT NEW SPATULA:
As a teenager, you had to look really cool all the time, just in case you ran into anyone you knew. Now, you’re going to movie nights by yourself and getting McFlurries at 2am in your ugg boots after not having showered for two days. Who cares anymore? Not you, you’re too tired and everything hurts. Could this be peak adulthood? CHOOSING THE SALAD:
You want the chips, but there’s no way having chips three times in a week sounds responsible. When an overpriced pile of leaves that tastes like wet disappointment is the ‘better’ option, that sounds like peak adulthood to me.
If the thought of fancy pillows, a new rug, or a new duvet makes your heart go all aflutter, you might be an adult, which is fun until you realise how much everything costs. The prescribed path through life’s stages will not fit everyone. Life is no Monopoly board. Everyone moves through life at a different pace and in different directions. Whatever you do, you’re likely to go ‘backwards’ at some point. Adulthood is characterised as the time when you become boring, but it should be seen as the time you have the freedom to do the things you wanted to as a kid, while still looking after yourself. Just because you got the salad doesn’t mean you’re not building a blanket fort when you get home. 6

AN INTROVERTS GUIDE TO Article by Alison Lesley
Festivals
IF, like me, your perfect Saturday night involves a good book, a hot beverage, and a 10pm bedtime, you’re probably an introvert. You’ve also probably accepted that you’re not the partying type and firmly believe that tightly packed crowds can only end in stampeding disaster. Researchers estimate between sixteen and fifty per cent of the population are introverted (Psychology Today, 2018). Unfortunately, from time to time, introverts like us have to crawl out of our bedrooms, Gollum-style, and go outside. When the tour organiser of my favourite band finally realised my city does in fact exist, I had to attend an introvert’s hell – an indie music festival. Fear not delicate children, because, being the expert that I am after attending one whole festival, I have compiled The Introvert’s Guide to Music Festivals, to help you get through the journey unscathed.

SOCIAL
SAFE SPACES:
While bathrooms can be a safehaven for overwhelmed homebodies, this isn’t always possible at festivals or any large outdoor event, where bathrooms are replaced with claustrophobic PortaPotties that smell of substances I can only assume are the waste products of a ‘really good time.’ It can be tempting to use the classic bathroom excuse as a chance for a breather, but this is the one place you do not want to be taking deep breaths. Instead, quiet spaces can be found in shady grass areas and benches. Just look for the stoners to identify your nearest safe space. MAKING CONVERSATION:
Small talk and conversation are the building blocks of early relationships, the key to effective networking, and for an introvert, is the most draining and awkward social situation. Ever. Thankfully, festivals allow you to avoid this social death trap, because the music is too loud to hear what the person next to you is saying. Most conversations at festivals consist of the phrases “what?” and “huh?” repeated in an infinite loop, until both parties decide it’s time for another overpriced beer. It’s completely acceptable to stand silently next to people, provided you sway slightly to the beat as if you’re really in touch with your inner muso. 9
SOCIAL
ESCAPE PLAN:
Every expert who’s ever written about introverts will tell you to have an escape plan before heading into social situations – a way to get out with tact and grace when you know you’ve reached your limit. But getting out of a festival can be a minefield of crushed beer cans and passedout patrons. Luckily, drunk girls – the most innovative species on the planet – developed the monkey-grip walking chain, so you can weave your way out of the fray without losing you support squad. This technique doesn’t even require an excuse, because the beauty of the walking chain is that anyone and everyone will grab on and follow like dizzy sheep. Like the inevitable three-person shoulder tower that is attempted at least twice at every festival, even the most well-planned outing can so easily come crashing down, possibly injuring several people in its wake. As hard as it is for introverts, sometimes you’ve just got to go with the flow. I like to remember that being an introvert doesn’t make me any less interesting, and that new experiences allow for personal growth. And, besides, they always make me more excited to crawl back into bed as soon as I get home.

MINORITY VS MAJORITY A TALE OF CONFORMITY Article by Michael Green
ey
Many aspects of life have the capacity to transform. This is evident in the progression of cultural ideas from modernism to traditionalism, as well as the evolution of organisms that are forced to adapt to their surrounding environment or be held victim to the phenomenal forces of natural selection. I think it is important to note that transformation is not just a physical process. As a species, the human 11
race that is, we often hold different belief systems because we have lived different lives. We are constantly in a state of flux and what we consider today to be heinous overtime may become new and exciting. Something that I feel members of society are lacking in modern times is the desire to be great. Instead of pursuing their dreams, the thought of being a minority figure sways them from achieving greatness.
OPINION
There is a lot of competition in modern times. Innovation has gone beyond the point of creativity, with what was once portrayed as futuristic and fictitious now a reality. Breakthroughs have occurred in many aspects of civilization, for example the transportation, music and medical industries. Glimpsing back in time, do you think people that live in the 15th century ever thought it would be possible to fly? To drive an automobile? Not a chance!
now, as he suspected, the world is now discovering that this treatment holds significance.
Once upon a time, the thought of a paraplegic walking was next to non-existent. Yet we have reached a time where stem cell therapy and biotechnology has shown promise and has even assisted patients to walk again.
This is just one man’s story of how ideologies can go from being unbelieved to becoming transformed into the next big thing. No matter who you are or what your beliefs are, if you truly believe in something for the right reasons, don’t conform to the social norms of this world. Eventually, everything will transmute into something else as our worldly knowledge increases. If you are passionate about something or someone, there is no shame in being part of a minority group. What people do with the time they have left in this world is what’s of the utmost importance.
Immunotherapy began as a topic that the medical world considered to be hokum. Previous World Congress of Lung Cancer Immunotherapy sessions had a mere handful of attendees, and is fast becoming a ‘hot topic’ in the medical world. Research is cutting edge and has shown more promising results than what was first believed possible.
These scenarios provide a fine illustration that if one stays true to their beliefs, even when the odds are against them, they can still be successful and bring about positive changes to society! If people decide to conform and abandon their belief systems so easily, we will cease to witness miraculous discoveries and creations.
Professor Bruce Robinson, scientific director of the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases was one of the select few that believed immunotherapy was a promising field of research in primitive times of its development. Prof. Robinson decided to stick to his beliefs and
I feel it’s imperative that more emphasis needs to be put on individualism, allowing people to stick to their core belief systems and not fearing to break through the chains of bondage that limit their achievements. 12

THE Bumble EXPERIENCE
Article by Ellen Dimitiou
I am not a Tinder user, I am not a Bumble user…I am hardly a dater. But in an attempt to break the ice with a few girls at university, I told them the marvelous idea I shared with the Colosoul writing team the day before: “How funny would it be if I wrote about my experience using dating apps for the first time?” To my dismay, each of them turned to me wide-eyed and said, “DO IT!” So, I downloaded Bumble against my will, also because it seemed 13
safer than Tinder—yes, I’m neurotic and trying to find love, an ultimate combination for any lucky guy. Overwhelmed by the Bumble process after 37 minutes of use, I was inundated by morose feelings of hopelessness and professed that I would never find love and deleted Bumble. After seeing a friend from high school post about her engagement, I quickly reconsidered and downloaded the app again, and wasted three hours swiping through the entertaining array of males. One fellow — we’ll call him John — is
OPINION 23, a med student, and is “looking for the mother of his children…” umm… yes okay…very good.
wrote, “I rock climbed once”—I didn’t receive a response. Odd…
I was particularly tickled by one bio that read, ‘You pick the movie and I’ll roll the doobie’, and so obviously I swiped right!
I did talk to a few men that were actually very pleasant. One day after a week of zero messaging, I discovered that he had deleted his Bumble account—so that made me feel warm inside. Another guy I found pleasant asked me to coffee and upon agreeing a week later, I discovered that he had also deleted his bumble account. So…you could say I’m pretty chuffed with the whole experience!
It’s beyond me why there are so many humans intent on adventuring: ‘I want to find someone who’s open to doing Iowaska while abseiling off the Himalayas, upside down, face to face, at twilight, with monks…’ I may or may not have made that up, but for the love of God, where are all the men who just want to watch TV? One actually wrote (I swear), “I want someone I can actually DO THINGS WITH, and not just sit around and be boring. I love rock climbing, gymming, mountain biking, playing sports, the beach, and I’m open to trying anything! Let’s see if I can find someone to do all of this with me.” For fun I swiped right on him and
The final verdict: Bumble is okay for a laugh, and it’s a step up from Tinder, but if you’re a man repeller like me, maybe opt for a cat instead.

In modern times, whilst it is apparent that social media provides us with many benefits and is a valuable tool, we have to stop and wonder when enough is enough. Over the years, countless threats have been made by the supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. Fortunately for places like Australia and the United States of America, these claims turned out to be unfounded. Reflecting back on all this ‘prime time’ media usage, it seems like a large percentage of
all these broadcastings, news reports and blogs were all in vain. A threat is a threat and should be taken as seriously as the nature of the situation. The media was right to inform the people of the possibility of war and promote awareness. But this does not mean that they were required to do so several times a day, every day, for years to come. Turns out (thankfully) it was all talk and no action. However, people were forced into a state of paranoia because
OPINION
every time they turn on the television or connect to social media, there were more threats made, more claims of war and as a result, more stress caused for society. I am not stating that the media was wrong to inform the people. I am not saying we should just ignore threats when they are made. I am saying that I feel like there needs to be tighter regulation of the information revealed to the public and how frequently malignant information is revealed. Don’t get me wrong, some of Donald Trump’s tweets are satirical and although they are occuring with brain-numbing frequency, those posts are not necessarily the problem, unless they are of a racist or derogative nature. But I feel tweets, Instagram posts, Facebook posts, radio talk and news updates need to be more disciplined. Spreading information to the public is one thing, but spreading repetitive information to the public to get ratings when the content is known to likely promote fear and emotional disarray is blatantly wrong. Do people consider how this may affect the mental health of the public? People need to prevent avoidable dangers.
Filters should be imperative with such content. We live in a world where mental health issues are prevalent, Australia in particular. I think people within the media need to question the consequences of how they say and do things and be a little more cautious about what they reveal to the general public and how frequently they do so. What about children? What about the kids of today that are forced to live a life in fear due to newscasts telling them about everything bad happening in the world. Possibly they are too young to even grasp the true severity of the topics and can’t distinguish between one bad person and a whole population. Thus they become discriminatory to a minority group due to stereotyping. Is it not the role of the parent to inform their children on the ways of the world? The human race has come a long way, the days of the antique radio have well and truly passed. We have transformed and moved into the era where most households possess radios, televisions and computers. An era, where there are countless access points to your daily news, music and sport. Media of all sorts benefit our civilisation immensely. But we should be mindful of how we utilize this powerful artefact.

ENVIRONMENT
THE LAST STRAW Article by Ailish Delaney
Picture Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which is 828m tall, but reaching 372 times higher and made out of plastic bottles. Imagine the New York City World Trade Centre in all its 541m glory, but 145 times higher and made from plastic straws. Visualise the Eiffel Tower at 324m high, and then again ten times taller and constructed out of cigarette lighters. If the plastic that was found during the Ocean Conservancy 2016 International Coastal Cleanup was stacked, these images would be the confronting reality. Almost everyone has seen the gruesome images of a sea turtle that died from eating a plastic bag, a sperm whale washed up on the beach because 30kg of rubbish blocked its digestive system and it starved, and the turtle with a plastic straw lodged up its nostril. We all recognise the iconic ‘sacred talisman’ worn by Lovelace in the movie Happy Feet to be a plastic ring from a six-pack of cans. it. 17
WE KNOW THAT THESE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ARE CAUSED BY PEOPLE AND OUR PLASTIC, YET WE DO NOT SEEM TO RECOGNISE THE SEVERITY OF IT.
ENVIRONMENT We produce more than 300 million tonnes of plastic annually; around 8 million tonnes of this ends up in our oceans. Earlier this year, a diver off the coast of Bali went searching for clear blue waters and wildlife, but instead found a ‘slick’ of plastic. The water was murky and as he floated through the ocean, he found himself surrounded by plastic rather than fish. Plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic straws, plastic packaging. It drifted by him, over his head and around his body, and it was as if the plastic had become the marine life.
We can help combat the plastic problem by cutting down on singleuse plastics. Starbucks, IKEA, McDonalds and Hungry Jacks are a few names among many businesses that have joined the pledge to rid their restaurants of plastic straws by 2020. This combined with the nationwide ban of single-use plastic bags is a step in the right direction. Although, as consumers, we cannot change the plastic problem alone, by cutting down on single-use plastic it will help make a considerable difference. EASY WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC CONSUMPTION:
According to Slo Active, there are an estimated 5.25 trillion plastic particles currently floating around the world’s oceans. Because plastic breaks down so slowly, even slower in the ocean than on land, these particles will continue to drift and impact the marine life for years to come. Each piece of plastic you have used still exists today and will for many more years, many of which would have ended up in the ocean.

Nanollose THE FUTURE OF PLANT-FREE FASHION Article by Tiffany Ko
Did you know that we cut down trees to make fibres and fabrics called Viscose-Rayon, that go into making clothes? This is what CEO-Managing Director of Nanollose Alfie Germano asked when I met him at their headquarters. And it’s true — when we think of clothes and where they come from, we think cotton, wool, silk, rayon…but it just about stops there. WHERE DOES RAYON COME FROM, AND HOW IS IT MADE?
Well, from trees. Like in many major industries, deforestation is a big problem in fashion, and with the rise of fast fashion, the demand for clothing in general is growing. Can our environment keep up? Nanollose might just have the answer. 19
WHO ARE NANOLLOSE?
They are a future-tech company which has developed the technology to create fibres from liquid waste. The effect of this is that they can reduce the need for trees and plants as a source for clothing and other products like paper & hygiene products. HOW DID IT ALL START?
How good things start —by accident! In 2006, a faulty batch of wine turned into a jelly-like material which could be worn as clothing when dried. This led to the birth of Nanollose and their Nullarbor fibre, a tree-free version of the viscose-rayon fibre known as simply “rayon.” Since then, the company has been finding ways to refine this technology and create other augmentations of microbial cellulose HOW IS RAYON MADE?
Traditionally, rayon is made from cellulose which is predominately taken from wood pulp. This poses an environmental challenge since the process requires the felling of trees, and if not managed correctly, causes mass deforestation. Also, to obtain pure cellulose, wood has to go through a chemical extraction process called ‘krafting,’ which uses hazardous chemicals and is energyintensive. Not so flashy is it?
ENVIRONMENT HOW DOES THE NULLARBOR FIBRE WORK?
Rather than using the cellulose from trees and plants, the Nanollose fibre called Nullarbor Fibre™ is created from waste products. Think wine, beer, even coconuts; any food or beverage industry is a go. Microbes are then used to convert this waste into microbial cellulose, which can then be used to create rayon.
WHY IS IT BETTER ENVIRONMENT?
FOR
THE
Cellulose is one of the most common raw materials being used around the world, and it’s still tree and plant-based. Where cellulose from cotton, trees and bamboo need sunshine, water, fertilisers and even pesticides to grow, microbial cellulose is incredibly versatile, needing only a small amount of water to grow through natural fermentation. Think of it this way: using a soccer field as a standard measurement, bamboo has the highest cellulose yield compared to cotton and trees, taking 3-7 years to grow and produce 12 tonnes of cellulose yearly. Microbial cellulose can be grown in just 10-15 days, creating 110-115 tonnes of cellulose yearly.

WILL THE NULLARBOR FIBRE REPLACE TRADITIONAL FIBRES IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
Mr Germano says, “we aim and are on track to provide a sustainable alternative for companies and consumers who are growing increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of their actions. It is arrogant of us to say that we will replace. There are many good and responsible companies that are forging towards an overall industry betterment. We like to think that we will be able to provide a green and sustainable resource that meaningfully contributes to many facets of industry, starting with textiles. Thanks to Nanollose, the fashion world isn’t looking so bleak! After all, creating and wearing fashion shouldn’t have to cost the Earth.

8 MILLION TONNES OF PLASTIC WASTE ENTER THE WORLD’S OCEANS EVERY YEAR (UN ENVIRONMENT ASSEMBLY, 2017).
You can reduce your plastic consumption or improve your waste mismanagement by:
•
Choosing environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic. Remembering to take our stainless-steel water bottle out with you instead of buying a plastic bottle is just one easy way to do this.
•
Upcycling or recycling. Ask yourself if you could use it for something else, if not then recycle it.
•
Participating in beach and river clean ups.

WORST FASHION TRENDS OF 2018 Article by Ellen Dimitiou Photo: Topshop
Plastic clothes and shoes: I’d rather not see the trickle of your perspiration or the crotch of your plastic pants fogging up like the car in Titanic. And did you miss the ban on plastic? How dare you obnoxiously parade around in your plastic clothes, shame on you! Implant necklaces: An implant necklace feature of any kind is revolting and offensive. If this is the future of fashion please spare me from this cruel, cruel world. If you have trypophobia (an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes, or bumps — makes me gag just writing that) or any kind of aversion to the appearance 27
of patterned objects protruding from beneath skin, I would not recommend you succumb to this brief but alarming fashion faux pas.

PERTH’S VEGAN EATS A NON-VEGAN’S TAKE ON VEGAN FOOD Article by Tiffany Ko
If you told me five years ago that Perth would be the vibrant foodie centre it is today, I would have laughed it off as a dream. But it’s true — Perth has transformed into a real cultural hub, and the vegan scene has taken off. So, for those still a bit hesitant about the whole veganism thing, here’s a short and sweet list of places for you to test the waters. And who knows, maybe after this you’ll be converted! 29
Photo: A Little Shop of Plenty
The Little Shop of Plenty A perfect getaway from the busy streets outside, this trendy café offers a wide variety of buildyour-own plates and bowls. Their Abundance Bowl is to die for — made up of a hearty mix of super foods, the roasted chickpeas and quinoa meld well together with the almond pesto slaw, giving the bowl a delicious kick. If you’re interested in trying a vegan patty, go for their Mushroom, Lentil Beet Burger. Although the patty doesn’t pass for a regular one, it’s a tasty alternative that comes with bursts of flavours traditional patties don’t offer. Overall rating: 5/5 stars
FOOD
The ‘Pear’fect Pantry What do you get when you pair great imitation meals together with a super laidback café? The ‘Pear’fect Pantry of course! Unlike other vegan haunts, this place specialises in transitioning regular meaty dishes into its vegan-friendly version. From Big Macs, Nachos and even Asian Noodle or Spaghetti Bolognese Burritos, there is a wide variety to choose from. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Burrito Bowl. Normally served with chilli con carne, you can switch it to their signature ‘pulled pork’, made out of jackfruit (I know!) However, the trophy definitely goes to their German Beer Brat Dog — piled high with a generous serve of their saucy toppings, if I hadn’t known I was in a vegan café, I would have been none the wiser! Overall rating: 4/5 stars

Veggie Mama It’s easy to miss this gem hidden behind the hustle and bustle of Beaufort Street, but that’s just part of the charm of this cosy café. Offering an all-veggie menu, they also cater for vegan options, with traditional brunch meals as well as an amazing array of vegan patties to make your own burgers from. A delicious choice would be their New York Bagel, topped up with spinach, sundried tomatoes, and a creamy layer of avocado. Their Tofutti substitute tastes the same as, if not better, than regular cream cheese. Or, if you’re craving some good ol’ eggs, their tofu scramble mixed with onions is an interesting alternative. Pearth Organic Kitchen I would be lying if I said I wasn’t saving the best for last. With fresh, minimalistic vibes, you are pulled away from the busy outside world into a tranquil place where you can spend hours on end chatting with friends or absorbed in a book. Their menu is refreshing and innovative, bringing together an interesting mix of foods — but doing it well. If you’re on the lookout for a hearty meal, go for their Bangers and Mash. The combination of their sweet potato mash and mushroom gravy with their tempeh and shiitake sausage is a match made in heaven. For something lighter, their Mediterranean Plate is a must. The baba ghanoush and hummus go perfectly with the juicy greens, and is garnished with a generous sprinkle of their tofetta, aka feta made from tofu.

THE BEST COMING-OFAGE FILMS
The Twenty First Century OF
Article by Ailish Delaney
Coming-of-age stories are supposed to depict our struggles: teenage heartbreak and love lost, life-defining friendships, family drama, self-acceptance, surviving school, and just manoeuvring through life. The transition from childhood to adulthood is full of trials and tribulations and each person experiences a different coming-of-age, yet there’s something special, something we can all relate to, in the stories that are depicted for us on the big screen. Here’s to the stories that have helped mould us into who we are. Here’s to our coming-of-age on the screen, and here’s eight of my favourites.

A coming-of-age with a twist, Juno is the comedic and witty story of sixteen-year-old Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) who discovers she is pregnant by her friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). TAYLOR SWIFT
What is a Reputation All About? Article by Michaela Gall
What is a reputation? Taylor Swift fans found out Friday 19th when the worldwide sensation became the first female to headline Perth’s Optus Stadium. It’s been many years since Swift has visited Perth, the last time being when she brought her Red World Tour down under in 2013. That tour set the bar high for Perth fans; enter the reputation World Stadium Tour. It’s no secret that Swift has gone through a lot of changes in the past few years. Her music, edgier and angrier, is fuelled largely by the rumours and claims surrounding her life which are propagated by the media on a daily basis. Swift shouts 39

back through her music, and if the past few months of touring has any indication, her fans are shouting with her. That’s not to say she’s abandoned her roots completely. It was quite the opposite in fact; her showstopping, spectacular performance catering to all. The show opened after pre-show performances by New Zealand up-and-coming artist Broods and British pop star Charli XCX, who got the crowd going and all the more ready for Swift’s entrance. The audience wasn’t ready for it.

The opening number, a loud and effect-filled rendition of hit Ready for It?,got the crowd screaming. The show launched with some of Swift’s raunchier numbers, I Did Something Bad and Look What You Made Me Do and both were complete with complex lighting cues, fireworks, and pyrotechnics that lit up the stadium sky. It was loud, sassy, and unapologetic, all things we’ve seen from Swift in the year leading up to the tour.
Why do we get so anxious about a reputation?
This was the question she was trying to figure out, and eventually came to this answer: It’s because we’re looking for something real.

It was the touching rendition of older numbers Style, Love Story, and You Belong With Me that made the opening act, fans screaming the lyrics to the classics, especially Love Story, which is arguably the song that opened her up to the mainstream eye of society. Fittingly, the space that came after the thunderous applause was filled by Swift herself, recounting the events of her fall off the map after the 1989 World Tour.

In a beautiful stripped-back rendition of Delicate, Swift flew over the audience to come and perform an acoustic set in amongst the crowd. This was the old Taylor Swift, back from the dead, giving something more to her audience. What really got the crowd on their feet was the energetic performance of smash hit Shake it Off. The whole stadium was up and dancing, lights going wild with colour as the lyrics were belted out. On her way back to the main stage, Swift performed a mash up of Bad Blood and old-time hit Should’ve Said No, my favourite number of the night. With some strong vocals in the gospel Don’t Blame Me, and an emotional piano-acoustic New Year’s Day/Long Live mash-up, Swift started wrapping up the night, 41

but not before ending with a funfilled performance of This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things, complete with all her back-up dancers and singers, as well as the whole crowd. By this point of the night, our throats were raw and raspy, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Swift knows how to put on a show. Whether it’s a showstopping, loud and angry performance, or a soft-spoken guitar acoustic she captivates her audience completely, every one of them hanging on to every single note and chord.

CREATURE CANYON’S EP RELEASE ROADMAP Article by Jordan Hill
San Diego based alternative rock band, Creature Canyon, has been dropping singles monthly in the lead up to the release of their new EP, “Did You Want That”. With the EP release set for October 19th, we’ve got about 2 months until we’re likely to see more music from the trio. So, now seems as good a time as any to weigh up what they’ve revealed so far, and see if this EP is something to start getting excited for. So with three singles out now, what should we expect from the EP?
43
The three releases encompass a diverse range of tones; “Hot Streak” offered an attitude laiden slow funk rock groove; “Did You Want That” provided a tense and tightly arranged funky tune, packed with catchy hooks; while the most recent release, “Hurricane”, gave a bluesy and energetic palate cleanser. It’s great to see the diversity of experimentation reflected in the choice of singles from Creature Canyon, a diversity that is hopefully reflected in the final EP itself. “Did You Want That” is certainly the jewel amongst the singles, as one would expect being the title track of the EP. It brings the tightest structure and the most refinement in its composition, compared to the other two singles. With an uplifting chorus and a measured addition of catchy guitar hooks, the song should be a first stop for new listeners to Creature Canyon. It is accessible and convincing in its execution of the primary concept, the instrumentation is paired back and defined into clear sections that flow into one another in a manner that has been obviously carefully crafted, with each section retaining a specific and individual feel. Despite the orchestration it still feels like the band is just jamming over the persistent four chord pattern. Breaking the silence with a lazy slap-back guitar riff “Hot Streak” sits firmly on the back of the beat,
MUSIC rolling into a steady groove that persists throughout the song. The careless confidence that permeates the song is driven in large part by, vocalist, Austin Steele’s delivery. Among the three singles “Hot Streak” is a close second to “Did You Want That” offering a looser, more aggressive groove dominated by the pushing drums. The third and most recent single, “Hurricane” comes as a clear departure in style from the other two, with a more laid-back vintage rock’n’roll feel. The song follows a steady build-up into release pattern with a loud and open-sounding psychedelic chorus. There isn’t anything particularly spectacular about this single, but it is easy listening and it executes the desired summer-y love feel it pursues. Against the polish of “Did You Want That” the other two singles do seem to gleam a little less, if you want an immediately catchy tune to throw in a playlist “Did You Want That” is clearly the one to go for. However, for those who prefer album and EP listening the other two singles indicate the potential for a more robust listening experience in the band’s upcoming EP. Overall, I’m eager to hear more from the trio. The upcoming EP shows signs of definite evolution in the band’s sound and I’m looking forward to watching Creature Canyon progress further.

I LOVE IT - KANYE WEST & LIL PUMP... DOES ANYONE REALLY? Article by Rashdan Ramli
On the 7th of September another internet-wrecking video was released by a Kardashian wannabe. Of course some call him Kanye, if they actually somehow consider him anything more than an attention seeker, much like his wife and in-laws. The song was titled I love it, and it featured what some call an ‘artist’ who goes by lilDump(Pump). Pump is known for his equally atrocious single Gucci Gang alongside his drug obsession. One would wonder what would happen when arguably two of the trashiest artists were to come together and create a song as it is indistinguishable as to whether they are humans or Roblox avatars 45
upon first glance. This is before even considering the time and creativity needed to construct lyrics so sophisticated that one’s brain cells gradually break down every 5 seconds whilst listening. The song was reportedly premiered at an adult film award show, which explains the incredibly raunchy opening lines read by comedian Adele Givens. What followed was

a lobotomising two minutes and eleven seconds of pure lyrical and visual torture that one cannot help but assume was produced and written by an individual who was drowning in the effects of narcotics and consistent blunt force trauma to their skull. To add to the atrocity that is this music video one can’t help but feel bombarded by advertising from West’s and Adidas
footwear line Yeezy, it even featured the notorious slippers that he was demolished for wearing them with a suit to rapper 2Chainz’s wedding. It really showcases the levels of not only disappointment, but also disregard within the hip-hop industry in 2018 when producing music. You can torture yourself to this musical abomination here, or you could alternatively listen to another satirical roast breakdown by YouTuber Aztrosist here. 46
