About The Greta Photo Book is a new initiative from the Perth-based Colosoul Group Inc, a youth based media and arts training centre and creative incubator. The project will see the online publication of a new monthly magazine entitled the Greta Photo Book. The Book invites young people aged 17 to 26 residing in Australia to submit their own creative and artistic photography for publication. The Greta team consists of a dedicated group of young volunteers, guided by Colosoul Group Inc CEO Tricia Ray. The group works on a volunteer basis and each week dedicates days of their time to creating and furthering the Greta project. The Greta project aims to encourage youth participation in the arts through the accessible, versatile and highly expressive medium of photography. The Book also serves as a platform for emerging talent to receive both community and industry recognition and accolade.

Tricia Ray Tricia is the founder of the Colosoul Group Inc. Previously, she has worked closely with several community-based organisations and charities. She now devotes her time to running the Colosoul Group’s various ventures. Trish likes her vintage kookai dress and peppermint tea with honey.

Nick Fitzpatrick PHOTOGRAPHER

Nick got involved with Greta through his English teacher in 2009. After meeting the Colosoul Group CEO, Tricia Ray, he was assigned to the Greta Photo Book project. Nick believes the best thing about Greta is the opportunity it will give young photographers and we think he’s right!

Nick’s first taste of photography was in 2008 at Mt Lawley Senior High School in Perth. He was in year 11 and it was the success of these first few photos that inspired him to continue with photography. School provided the platform for Nick to learn the basic skills he required, however these skills soon moved beyond the classroom. Nick believes, “All you really needs to know are the basics; once you know how to make a picture, the rest comes from your own creativity.”

Anyone with an interest in photography (and I’ll assume you do, considering this is a photo book you’re reading) knows that all photographers have a certain style. Nick’s fashion photography is part of his style, but it isn’t the whole story. “I’m still experimenting with a really wide variety of styles at the moment,” Nick says of his work. “I think the best photographers are versatile and not confined to a single style.”

He doesn’t look to anyone else to guide his artistic view and, as such, believes he’s able to break some of the rules that other photographers get caught up with. While Nick might not take direction from anyone, there are photographers who have caught his eye. Among favourites Nick lists Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, Ellen Von Unwerth and Ruven Afandor.

Like a lot of photographers, Nick is caught between the fight of location versus studio shooting. On one hand, being in the studio gives control. There’s no hassle of weather, the lighting is easily manipulated and you’re working on from a blank canvas background. However, Nick sums up the argument perfectly, saying “I love studios ... but nothing substitutes for the detail of location shoots.”
