Before a production, the Performing Make up Artist will meet with the director and performers to establish their visualisations of character make up. The Artist will assess the size and lighting plans for the theatre, which will support and establish make up requirements. The smaller the venue, for example, the less make up is required. The Make up Artist will look at photographs and sketches to obtain the exact character image he or she is planning for. Becoming a historian is important to study character descriptions and period settings to validate that all make up effects are in keeping with the period in which the play is set. A Make up Artist must be, above all things, structured. Appropriate and correct materials will be needed

for each performance, like wigs, beards, cosmetics and facial cleansers.

The Performing Make up Artist is a fundamental part of culture in virtually every society. A reputable Performing Make up Artist works to develop art by remodelling, concealing, distorting or accentuating human features. The Artist can make a youthful man look old or a perfectly healthy man look injured and scarred.

Create the looks of each character that will set alight the imagination of the audience. As a Costume Designer you will design and create the clothes and accessories that actors wear in their performances. Through shapes, colours and textures you will make a striking and powerful visual statement to the audience. You will be part of the collaborative team including the Director and the Set and Lighting Designers to ensure that costumes are smoothly integrated into the production. The costumes you create will communicate important character information including their occupation, social status, gender, age, sense of style and tendencies towards conformity or individualism. Your designs will reinforce the mood and style of the production, distinguish between the major and minor characters, suggest relationships between characters, change an actor’s appearance, suggest changes in character development and age and be objects of beauty in their own right.
