Introduction

Istria The Istrian peninsula is sometimes called the green peninsula because it is the biggest green oasis on the Northern Adriatic coast, and its relative closeness to all Central European countries makes it a perfect Mediterranean destination. The climate is free of extremes with moderately hot summers and mild winters, and very pleasant spring and autumn temperatures. This makes Istria an ideal cycling destination throughout the year. The landscape in Istria and the numerous cycling routes will satisfy both weekend cyclists and the most demanding bicycle riders alike. We pay much attention to preserving a clean environment, as you will see for yourself while riding on almost traffic-free paths that will take you to the nicest viewpoints, picturesque medieval towns and villages where time seems to have stopped, and beautiful coastal towns permeated with the spirit of turbulent and rich Istrian history.

North-western Istria The North-western part of Istria stretches from the Slovenian border to the north to the river Mirna to the south, and comprises the following towns and settlements: Umag, Novigrad, Buje, Savudria, and Brtonigla. This area abounds with natural diversity, from the lowland near the sea with dense evergreen underbrush and fertile acres, to the gentle hills of the hinterland that offer unique views on green forests, vineyards and olive groves, brooks and rivers, all the way to the fertile valley of the river Mirna which flows into the sea near Novigrad. Testimonies of the rich Istrian history can be seen in many places, among which you should not miss the oldest lighthouse of the Adriatic in Savudrija on the westernmost point of Istria (1818), or the medieval town 4

of Grožnjan famous for its exceptional beauty and numerous summer artistic colonies and events. It is worth visiting the Baroque church of St Mary, St Maximilian and St Pelagius in Novigrad and its Romanesque crypt that hosts a unique sacral collection, as well as the three-nave St Servulus Church in Buje with seven altars and an organ from 1791. The Castle of Momjan built in 1234 is another important historic location. It used to be the home of the Momjan Lords, and its ruins are located on the slope of the hill overlooking the fertile valley of the river Arđila. If you want to see how a typical medieval Istrian town looked like, visit Završje or Oprtalj, towns that seem to have changed very little from the time they were founded, and that offer magnificent viewpoints on the valley of the river Mirna. We are very proud to present the gastronomy of the region which is of exceptional quality and diversity. As it befits a region on the sea, the coast abounds with fish restaurants that offer fresh fish and seafood, while the inland has many taverns (konoba) and restaurants where you can taste everything from simple traditional food and excellent Istrian prosciutto (dried ham) to many innovative dishes made with green wild asparagus and white and black truffles typical of this region. It is important to mention that from almost every cycling route you can access several wine roads, and we especially recommend the wine road of Momjan where a wine of strong flavour and scent is produced – the Moscato from Momjan. In addition to the wine roads we also recommend the olive oil roads, among which those with tasting parlours offer the possibility to taste and purchase their delicious products. Experience North-western Istria on the bike, its beauties and the riches of its flavours and scents, and even before your present stay has finished you will want to come back again.

Length of the trail The cycling vacation has become increasingly popular among tourists in Istria and the number of cyclists on our roads has multiplied in the past ten years, calling for a growing need of responsible conduct on the biking routes in order to increase security and avoid possible accidents. Cycling routes in this guide book mostly follow secondary roads and trails that are almost completely free of traffic. However, parts of the routes simply have to follow main roads where you will encounter many vehicles.

(attention, traffic!). At 3.7 km in Bašanija turn left in the village centre and descent towards the sea and the lighthouse. Continue on the side road along the coast until arriving back on the main road and take a left (attention, traffic!). Continue straight, at 6,9 km turn right and take the trail through the acres. At distance (km)

7.3 km when you arrive to the side road take a right towards the village Alberi, pass through the village Crveni Vrh near the golf court and you will arrive to the village Medigija on a side road where you turn left. At 14.7 km you will come across a small side road that goes right towards the village Valica. Take this road and continue straight to the village Kmeti. Here the route goes on a somewhat busy road so pay attention to the traffic. Turn left on the main road and ride through the villages Sv. Marija na Krasu and Korsija where you have to turn right towards the village of Buščina. At the end of the village Buščina you will come across a side road where you turn right and continue straight through the villages of Farnezine and Vilanija to Petrovija. In Petrovija take a right turn in the direction of Umag and after only about 10 metres again turn right towards the village of Jeci (attention to traffic in Petrovija!) After the village of Jeci continue along the unpaved road for approximately 1 km until you arrive to the paved road. Turn left on the paved road and descend to the town waterfront and town square in Umag. Return to Katoro along the road by the sea which goes through the marina and tourist settlements Punta and Stella Maris.

Start in tourist settlement Katoro and on the main road immediately turn right; at 0.5 km turn left to the side road towards the village of Murine. At 2.0 km you will come across a side road where you have to turn right and ride for about 400 metres (until the “konoba”), and there turn left to the village. Continue along the winding small road through the settlement always following the direction of the road. On 3.7 km the road forks, continue to the right. Come to the main road (attention, traffic!), turn left and continue straight through the villages of Kmeti and Marija na Krasu to the village of Korsija. Turn right towards the village of Buščina. At the end of Buščina you will come across a side road where you turn right and continue through villages of Farnezina and Vilanija. At 10 km turn left on the small road towards the village of Vardica and keep riding straight to the village of Juricani where you turn right on the main road (attention, traffic!). After only 200 m down the main road, turn left to the side road towards Wine Roads and Olive Oil Roads. At 13.9 km you will come across a side road, turn right and continue straight through the villages of Čepljani and Zakinji after which you turn left on the side road at 15.5 km. Continue straight ahead to the village of Babići, and at the fork road continue left to the village of Škrinjari. On the crossroads turn right in the direction of Lovrečica (pay attention to the traffic on the crossroads before Lovrečica!) Ride straight to Lovrečica and in the village turn right in the direction of Umag. Follow the secondary roads by the sea and occasionally the main road all the way until you arrive to a small church by the sea at 22.4 km. Take the right turn into the village of Špina and go to the small road which goes through the village and leads to the main road (attention, traffic!); turn left and ride to the centre of Umag. Return to Katoro along the small road on the coast which goes through the marina and tourist settlements Punta and Stella Maris.

5.1 km; turn right to the side road, direction of “Kaldanija”. You will come across a side road where you turn right; carry on to 9.4 km; then cross the main road (attention, traffic!) and you will come to the village of Volpija. In front of the rural distance (km)

hotel “Parenzana” turn left and ride to 11 km; now turn left to the main road (attention, traffic!); already at 11.4 km turn right towards Kremenje. At 14.1 km you will come to Kremenje; turn left on the crossroads and at 14.3 km turn left again to the side road for “Oskoruš”. Head through vineyards to 17.9 km; then turn right towards Momjan and go uphill; on the crossroads in Momjan (18.9 km) turn left and continue uphill through the village of Sv. Mauro to Črnci where right after the signpost (21.1 km) you turn right downhill to Marušići. In Marušići turn right on the crossroads and on 24.1 km turn left on the road for ‘Grožnjan”. At 27.7 km you will come to the road Buje-Grožnjan, turn left and ride straight to Grožnjan. From Grožnjan take the same road back to the village of Stanica; turn left uphill, ride to the fork road at 31.6 km and turn right uphill. On 33.4 km you will come to Krasica on the main road; turn right uphill and ride along the main road to Buje and the departure point. Attention on the traffic on the main road!

What to visit The most interesting part of this route is its second part. It passes at the foot of Momjan through the valley of the river Arđila where you will find vineyards, a waterfall, the town Momjan and its famous castle, and several wine cellars that offer top quality wines. We recommend the wine cellar Kabola where you can try the renowned Muscato from Momjan, and the wine cellars Rino and Stari Podrum. If you want to try the local cuisine and local specialties with wild asparagus, truffles, and wild game, visit the agro-tourism Sv. Mauro in Momjan, tavern Furia in Smilovići, rural hotel La Parenzana in Volpija, and restaurant Pjero in Kremenje. From Momjan the route goes uphill to 322 m from where you can enjoy in the exceptional view on the surrounding valleys. The last town on the route is Grožnjan, a picturesque medieval town with numerous art galleries and ateliers which gave it the name of the “town of artists”. Pass through Kremenje, Marušići, Donja Gomila and when you come to the village of Šterna, turn left uphill towards Čepić. In Čepić on 14.0 km at the fork road take the road distance (km)

on the right; at 14.7 km on the next fork road continue on the left along the unpaved road to the paved road at 15.9 km. Turn right and after the village of Hrastići turn right again (direction Oprtalj). In Sv. Lucija at the “stop” signpost turn left for Oprtalj and on 19.8 km you will arrive at Oprtalj. From Oprtalj take the road for Sv. Lucija and ride straight ahead to Šterna; in that village turn left to the direction of Grožnjan. On 26.6 km turn left in the direction of Završje, and in the village of Mlin on 28.7 km turn right in the direction of Grožnjan. On 33.8 km you will come to the road Grožnjan – Buje; turn right and go back to the starting point through Triban.

What to visit Today’s route passes through romantic villages of upper Buje region and takes you to Oprtalj, a picturesque town that used to be an important medieval centre of this part of Istria. Nowadays Oprtalj is a small town situated on a hill with a magnificent view of the surrounding valleys including the valley of the river Mirna which is an important habitat of the appreciated white truffle. The route takes you back to Buje along secondary roads that wind between woods and hills. If you are fond of original flavours and traditional cuisine, pay a visit to the agro-tourism household Tončić in the village of Čabrnica, near Zrenj (prior appointment obligatory), while in the village of Kremenje you can visit the restaurants Marino and Pjero known for truffle-based specialties, as well as the wine cellar Kabola with its top quality white and rose wines. In Oprtalj you can taste original Istrian products in the tasting parlour of the store “Loggia”.

Carry on along the road which follows the river to 18.6 km and turn right and uphill; the road goes to Nova Vas and Brtonigla. From Brtonigla go down distance (km)

onto the main road Novigrad-Buje, turn right (attention, traffic!) and ride along the main road to the road Umag-Buje; turn right uphill towards Buje. At 30.1 km turn left to the side road which leads into the very centre of Buje; from there, ride downhill towards the starting point near the football field.

What to visit The area of Brtonigla is a renowned wine-bearing region, characterised by its mixture of different types of soil. When passing through Brtonigla, do not miss the opportunity to stop by at a wine cellar to taste the Istrian Malvasia that sprung from this white, grey, red and black soil. In the very heart of Brtonigla, you can find one of the best restaurants in the region, San Rocco Gourmet, renowned for its imaginative cuisine based on fish and truffles (reservation required), while lovers of traditional cuisine are advised to visit the taverns of Astarea and Morgan. Also located not far from Brtonigla is a must-see natural attraction - the karst cave of Mramornica.

The road takes us left to Juricani where we turn left and passing the villages of Kranceti, Sverki, Gornji Babici and Skrinjari we reach the main road Umag-Novigrad. Turn left and then through Karigador and Dajla distance (km)

continue to Novigrad, but on the roundabout turn right for Karpinjan and along the seaside we reach our starting point, parking of hotel Nautica.

What to visit The road from Neapolis to Novigrad offers a vivid insight to the typical Istrian lifestyle and culture as well as an opportunity for an active holiday and exploring. You can start immediately in Novigrad, little seaside town with a rich history and cultural heritage which is mentioned in antique sources with the name Neapolis. In the centre you can see the contemporary museum Lapidarium conserving one of the largest collections of stone monuments in Croatia, as well as the famous Rigo, small art worldly known gallery. Agata Gallery, Saint Anton church, homestead of the count Rigo in Karpinjan and the countryside palace in Dajla are reminders of an interesting past and culture of these territories. You will be able to discover those on two wheels along this attractive cycling path. Apart from the palace in Dajla, one of the rare monuments from the neoclassical period, you can have a stop in the wine cellar Skrilj or Palcic and taste some good local wine. Passing through the area of winegrowing and green Brtonigla in the inland you will encounter various wine roads, homes to some of the best Istrian wine producers as well as comfortable konobas and nice agro tourism households, known for its kindness and spirit of typical Istrian village. There is also the unique Mramornica cave near the village Draskovici which attracts curious people from all around Europe. Going back towards the sea, enjoy the ride through vineyards, olive groves and orchards and end up your day having dinner in one of the extraordinary Novigrad restaurants.

The magnificent landscape that gradually ascends from the sea towards the hinterland of Istria makes it an ideal area for mountain bike lovers. Only a few kilometres away from the sea you will come across hilly areas. Here you can enjoy your ride on marked and unmarked mountain bike trails that lead you through gorgeous and almost virgin nature to explore the medieval towns set hilltops offering spectacular views of the surrounding villages, churches, and the blue sea. We have decided to present you 7 selected routes, while 6 more routes can be found in the map in this guide book. Together they represent a network of mountain bike hill trails covering the whole area of North-western Istria. Have a great biking adventure in North-western Istria! 24

After Antenal (just before the bridge) turn left to the unpaved trail by the Mirna river and carry on to 5.3 km; take the road on the left and uphill to Sv Dionizije. Continue over Serbani and Nova Vas, turn left for Pavići, St. Drušković and Turine and along the country road continue over Marinčići, Fiorini, Balbije, distance (km)

Štroligarija and Punta to Karigador. In Karigador we turn left towards Dajla, the beginning of a new bicycle trail following the coastal route through Mareda, Pineta and Kastanija, all the way to Novigrad.

What to visit The start of today’s stage is in Novigrad, a romantic fisherman’s town with partially preserved town fortification walls, a unique town loggia at the very seaside, and the St. Pelagius church with a crypt that houses a unique sacral collection. The route goes through the fertile valley of the river Mirna and passes near the cellars of the “wine town” Brtonigla and the cave “Mramornica” which offers an inside view of the magnificent Istrian karstic subterranean world. Along the route you will pass through the woods, small villages, vineyards, olive groves, acres, as well as ride on secondary roads and paths by the sea. A country villa, i.e. monastery dating back to the first half of the 19th century can be seen on the seashore in Dajla, as one of the few cultural monuments in the Adriatic region from the neoclassical period situated immediately by the sea. Going through the village of Dajla we recommend you to visit the wine producer Palčić and to taste his merlot, cuvee or his pearl wine frizzantino, obtained from the red teran, as well as the long standing oil mill and the oil tasting house “Al Torcio” with tradition that started years ago. After returning to Novigrad, we recommend having a lunch in one of the selected fish restaurants - Damir i Ornela, Čok, or Pepenero.

What to visit The stage starts from the wonderful small fisherman’s town of Novigrad which is located on Istria’s west coast. It stands out amongst the numerous Istrian towns for its unique natural beauties, rich cultural heritage and the kindheartedness of its inhabitants. Novigrad’s historic town centre is located on an island which was connected to the mainland in the 18th century. The partially conserved medieval town fortification walls are one of the most interesting symbols of this tourist destination. The bell tower of St. Pelagius church on the main town square was built on the model of St. Mark’s bell tower in Venice, and the view of the city from its top is breathtaking. Novigrad also homes the permanent installation of Austrian-Hungarian navy called the Gallerion which offers a vast collection of nautical exhibits that are well worth seeing. The route follows the coast all the way to Mareda, where we turn on dirt roads that wind through picturesque vineyards and olive groves, taking us through Fiorini, Kršin, Bužinija, Paolija and Velika Stancija. Before arriving to Novigrad you shouldn’t miss the tasting parlour of the olive oil producer Babić and experience its magical world of scent and taste where you can try many various types of extra virgin olive oil. In case you get hungry along the route, we recommend visiting the fish restaurant Giovanni located in St.Roželo near hotel Maestral. Not to be missed The starting point of today’s stage is in Oprtalj, a small town that used to be an important medieval centre of the region and where history left its marks at every corner. You should visit the loggia that homes the collection of stone monuments, and the churches of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of St. Rocco decorated with frescoes. In the store “Loggia” you can taste typical Istrian products. Besides Oprtalj, the route takes you Završje, a historic place where time seems to have stopped, and Grožnjan, the picturesque town protected by fortification walls from every side, with its numerous art galleries and ateliers which gave it the name of ‘the city of artists’. What to visit This road leads through the green inland of Umag and invites for an authentic experience of Istria once and today, combining together valuable points, interesting for different age groups. A family will therefore gladly have a stop at the Goli vrh ranch and watch the horses, try riding or get an appointment of a riding class whereas for adventure and history lovers the top hill town of Buje will awaken their fantasy. With its two bell towers and the five edge fortress, Buje dominates north-western Istria reaching all the way to the Alps. Strong points of Buje are the old town core with the magnificent church, bell tower and view point along with the Ethnographical Museum hosting the collection of old Istrian cuisine, oil factory and craft factories. Don’t miss visiting the exhibition in the town gallery Orsola and the school of making stained glass. What to visit Bearing in mind that the starting point of this interesting road is the tourist village Katoro, already at the beginning of this bike adventure you can stop a bit and enjoy the rich offer includes a couple of high quality hotels, shops and restaurants as well as sport playgrounds. Special attractions are outside pools and fully equipped pebble, rocky and concrete beaches. From Katoro the road will take you to a completely new world, in the undiscovered inland of Umag inland through fields, olive groves and vineyards where you will still be able to see peasants cultivating their own land. The route goes then back to the sea and through a big part of Umag Riviera, from camping Park Umag to Lovrecica, Finida and Saint Ivan to the centre of the town. Umag, the most western Croatian town with a turbulent history has managed to maintain until nowadays some medieval walls and towers like for example the Bishop tower from the 14th century, gothic and renaissance houses with stems and the monumental town church Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the mid 18th century. On the other hand, Umag Riviera is a place of picturesque bays and green woods, cultivated vineyards and olive groves, blue sea and pebble beaches. The seaside in Katoro is very interesting archeologically â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in the Roman times it was home to rustic villas and sea ports which are submerged today due to the rise of the sea level in the last two thousand years. During archaeological researches within Katoro area remaining of pottery has been found in the underworld from the times when Umag used to be part of the Roman Empire. On your way back to Katoro visit the ranch and horse riding club where you might be intrigued by jump riding, not such a known type of sport and recreation. What to visit The gallery road starts in Groznjan, town of artists and centre of the International Music Youth centre. Here you will discover numerous art galleries and among them the praised town gallery Fonticus. Apart from resting your soul, in Groznjan you will be able to do so with your body by tasting truffles, wine, rakija (grappa) and honey in one of many agro tourism households. Those who fall in love with Groznjan at first sight, and such are many, can afford a longer stay and rent accommodation in the old town core within one of little streets that enchant positive and vibrant energy. Riding further along the Parenzana road, a bike trail named after the old railway from the Austro-Hungarian times passing through Istria. This road leads us through a tick forest Kornarija all the way to Marusici where you can visit a Sculpture Park with operas made by authors from all around the world. Continue riding through the abandoned village Vrhnjak arriving to Dugo Brdo which can be easily named a lookout due to its beautiful view point stretching to all four sides of the world. On the way to Oprtalj you will have the opportunity to discover sculpture pieces made by Mother Nature that has played a bit with this landscape leading you to Zavrsje and back to arty Groznjan.

What to visit The aphrodisiac road goes through peaks and hills south and east of Oprtalj where from you can enjoy the beautiful scenery to the Mirna valley, picturesque medieval town Motovun and the greenery of surrounding hills. This land is known as the habitat of the truffle. This expensive bulb with an aphrodisiac reputation is being prepared in numerous ways in local restaurants and konobas. Don’t hesitate and stop for lunch because a plate of home made pasta with truffles is an extraordinary addition to your bike adventure through north-western Istria. Along this route special attention to bike-explorers should be given to Livade, a place called also the world truffle centre. Every October it hosts a big festival dedicated to this delicious king of cookery-especially for the white truffle, the best one among truffle types. Even if it can be found in other parts of Europe too they say the Istrian white truffle from the Motovun woods has something special while it has enchanted not a small number of gourmands so far. Moreover, don’t miss to go and look for the replica of the record truffle weighing more than 1,3 kilos which has been found in 1999 exactly in Livade. This truffle has become part of the Guinness book of records as the heaviest truffle in the world found so far. It is exhibited in the lovely shop of home made specialties on truffle basis. The Guinness record episode only strengthened the reputation of small Livade as the real truffle centre in the world. Istrian spa (where the road begins and ends) is a place for relaxation and peace. Above the village you can see an impressive 85 meters high cliff called Gorostass situated close to a source of healing water while the peak of the rock is home to the Saint Stjepan church after whom the spa resort was named. A longer drive along the Mirna riverbed which follows on the way back to Istrian spa represents a special experience for cyclists and sportsmen of various profiles. About Parenzana Parenzana was a narrow-gauge railway operating between 1902 and 1935 between Trieste and Poreč (at that time Parenzo, hence the name Parenzana). It connected Istria to the inland of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, of which Istria was an integral part. The railroad was of extreme importance as it brought economic progress to the most isolated and poorest parts of Istria, therefore it is not surprising that people still remember it with respect and nostalgia. The railway transported wine, olive oil, salt, fruit, vegetables, lime, wood and other goods to the market and it ran through North-western Istria connecting Trieste with Poreč via Koper, Piran, Buje, Grožnjan, Završje, Livade, Motovun, and Vižinada. The last train rode on August 31st 1935. Since it couldn’t compete with the road transportation it was dismantled, carriages and locomotives sold and reallocated, while rails were loaded on a ship for Abyssinia which allegedly ended up sunken somewhere in the Mediterranean. Even though it has been 73 years since Parenzana closed, most railway stations have survived as many were converted into homes. Viaducts and tunnels are preserved as well and are exceptionally attractive. Many passionate hikers, researchers, cyclists and nature lovers have been long aware of the beauty of this magical route emphasizing that it can have huge potential if adequately revitalized. With the financial support of the European Union, vegetation and obstacles have been cleared from the railway route, and the bridges have been restored and equipped with security fences. Being financed by multinational European Union and connecting three states - Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, Parenzana is rightly called The Path of Health and Friendship.
