Bristol Plays Music (BPM), the music education hub for the city, is transforming music education for children and young people through innovative programmes, including A New Ambition for Inclusive Excellence and events like the outstanding Fast Forward Music Festival. The redevelopment of Colston Hall will create the UK’s first Centre for Advanced Training for young musicians with special education needs and disability, placing Bristol Plays Music at the vanguard of high-quality, fully-accessible music education for every young musician, regardless of their needs. Come and meet Barry Farrimond - CEO of Bristolbased charity OpenUp Music - an organisation working in partnership with BPM. Barry is a music technologist and actor (any fans of The Archers out there?). He and his co-director, Doug Bott, are passionate about empowering young, disabled musicians. Together they have created SouthWest Open Youth Orchestra, the UK’s first disabledled regional youth orchestra, working alongside musicians who are disabled by conventional orchestras and instruments. In its inaugural year, SWOYO has performed at Bristol Cathedral, Wiltshire Music Centre and was broadcast live on BBC Music Day from our very own Lantern space. Barry will introduce you to members of SWOYO through a documentary film, demonstrate the Clarion – an accessible musical instrument which can be played with any part of a musician’s body, including their head, feet or even their eyes – and give you the opportunity to try it yourself.
