The Beams (John E Vistic and Adam Coombs) collaborate with Judith Aston and UWE filmmaking students to present a multimedia show inspired by Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master And Margarita. Featuring a 40-piece orchestra and choir, live band, cinematic projections, VJs and theatrical elements, the world of The Master… is brought to life set to a soundtrack of orchestral arrangements, Krautrock and electronic beats.

Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights takes top billing at Slapstick Festival’s 10th annual celebration of silent film. The late film critic Roger Ebert said the Tramp’s 1931 classic “[came] the closest to representing all the different notes of his genius”. Chaplin’s original score will be performed live by the Bristol Ensemble. The evening will also feature screenings of Laurel & Hardy’s comedy short Two Tars. It’s the fifth anniversary of this scratch orchestra and chorus event as 250 amateur players and 300 singers come together for one day only. Musicians and performers meet at 9.30am prompt to start rehearsals for the 4pm concert. To join the orchestra or chorus, please email theorchestrapitt@hotmail.co.uk – there is a fee of £20 to cover costs and any surplus goes to Cancer Research UK. The concert is free.

Uncut called Van Morrison’s 35th studio album, Born To Sing: No Plan B, “a real return to form … a vibrant and timely reaffirmation of Morrison’s talents”. Having toured his legendary Astral Weeks a few years ago, The Guardian finds the singer “rejuvenated … the warm brass and catchy, sweet melodies [recalling] 1970’s Moondance”. That trademark “sinuous growl” (Rolling Stone) is on display as the singer responsible for Brown Eyed Girl and Jackie Wilson Said… rails against greed, materialism and the economic breakdown.

Over a quarter of a century after the release of her “definitive” (The Arts Desk) second album, Solitude Standing, “the pioneering folk-poet [and] nimble lyricist” (The Independent) returns with her eighth offering. Vega performs new material alongside some of her best-loved tracks, like the Grammynominated Luka and Tom’s Diner, all interspersed with illuminating anecdotes.

Klavikon reimagines electronic music without the use of conventional processes. Instead, pianist Leon Michener employs a system of amplified prepared piano. Augmenting the 88 keys with his own inventions and found objects, he delivers cascading percussion, sub-basses and abstract soundscapes. Roly Porter began his career as one half of groundbreaking project Vex’d. His solo work fuses his background in sound system music with contemporary classical composition and focused sound design resulting in a singular and often harrowing sound. His second solo album, Life Cycle of a Massive Star, was released last year.

A key figure in European art music, Keith Tippett is one of the most important jazz musicians, improvisers and composers of the last 40 years. Tippett has been
involved in three distinct areas of music for four decades working with contemporary, avant-garde and improvising musicians. Bristol-born Tippett returns to perform his latest composition The Nine Dances Of Patrick O’Gonogon commissioned by Richard Wiltshire. This will be the first performance of this piece outside of London.

To trace the impact of the First World War – the ferment which led up to it and the fallout – is to tell the story of the 20th century and its art and culture. The World Changed focuses on the impact of conflict on the music of this period, exploring the differing reactions of composers and how it shaped their musical styles. For some, it fired already radical imaginations and took their music in new directions, but many others were left deeply scarred, struggling to find answers to the loss of an entire generation and the realisation that life would never be the same again. The World Changed picks out some of the major musical works that came to define the period and sets them alongside talks, films and other special events. The World Changed is a partnership between Bristol Music Trust and St George’s Bristol and forms part of the wider Bristol 2014: The City And Conflict From The First World War To The Present Day.
