welcome to the bristol international classical season 2013-14 Welcome to Colston Hall’s International Classical Season 2013/14. I am delighted to introduce our season of world-class classical music featuring internationally renowned soloists, leading orchestras and some of the most emotionally compelling music ever written. I’m especially pleased that through exciting initiatives like our Symphony Project and contribution to the Britten 100 Celebrations we are creating innovative and nationally significant work for Bristol and putting learning and participation at the heart of what we do.
Louise Mitchell Chief Executive, Bristol Music Trust
As well as forging closer relationships with a host of local businesses and corporate partners whose support to deliver our work is invaluable and greatly appreciated, we will be working with St George’s Bristol throughout 2014 on a special citywide project called The World Changed. This series of unique events will remember the First World War through performances of some of the great musical works of the time in collaboration with world renowned pianist Stephen Hough. For updates and more information visit www.colstonhall.org/worldchanged I look forward to seeing you at the Hall for a fabulous season of inspirational music.
Arthur Rubinstein, Murray Perahia, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra... over the years Colston Hall’s famously thrilling acoustic has attracted classical music's greatest legends. I clearly remember my first visit to Colston Hall eight years ago, and being blown away by the vitality of the sound. And that’s why I’m delighted that BBC Music Magazine is partnering with this fantastic venue – we’re passionate about supporting live classical music and, being Bristolbased ourselves, we’re extremely proud to support this gem of a concert hall. Conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev Piano Andrei Korobeinokiv Tchaikovsky Symphony No.1 Winter Daydreams Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4
There’s Muscovite magic casting its spell over the start (and close) of our season. And who more qualified to shoulder the Tchaikovsky stopover in our groundbreaking Symphony Project than an orchestra that proudly bears his name? Under its Principal Conductor of 40 years, the orchestra wraps up warm for a wintry journey in Tchaikovsky's symphonic debut, and battles fate in No. 4 with his folksong-fuelled finale and champagne cork-popping Scherzo. In between there’s the concerto with which the young Prokofiev bagged the Anton Rubinstein Prize – and to play it a multi-prize-winning pianist described as ‘nothing short of miraculous’ by the San Francisco Classical Voice.

Conductor Kirill Karabits Piano Valentina Lisitsa Works by Wagner: Die Meistersinger Prelude Rheingold Entrance of the Gods Tannhaüser Grand March Tristan and Isolde Prelude and Liebestod Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3
Love is in the air, but there’s no fairytale ending. Richard Wagner would have been blowing out 200 birthday candles this year and to celebrate it’s opera-glasses at the ready as Kirill Karabits and the BSO raise the curtain on a quartet of Wagnerian operatic show-stoppers. From the nobility of Meistersinger to the passion and pathos of Tristan, the grandeur of the Gods’ entry into Valhalla to the brass-capped brilliance of the Tannhaüser March, the birthday greetings bedazzle. Away from the opera house, rising star Valentina Lisitsa trains her ‘fevered urgency and iron-clad technique’ (The Telegraph), on Rachmaninov’s own piano concerto favourite.

In its 20th anniversary year, and under inspirational Chief Conductor Libor Pesek – 'the final climax left the audience short of breath' (San Francisco Chronicle) – the Czech National Symphony Orchestra delves into Dvorˇák as our Symphony Project crosses borders. Inspired by Brahms, written for London and stirringly patriotic, the turbulent 7th symphony is the perfect foil to the lesser-known 5th – a sunny Bohemian rhapsody in the key of Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony. In between comes the ever-welcome rhapsody of Bruch’s lyrical G minor Concerto, and a soloist whose ‘passion and technical bravura are palpable and exciting: the fireworks never stop’ (The Times).

The signature tune of his farewell tour before ‘exile’ to the USA, bristling with Bohemian gaiety and melancholy, Dvořák’s Dumky Trio remains one of his most popular chamber works, partnered here by seductive violin miniatures and the lambent Waldesruhe in the composer’s own transcription for cello and piano.

In September 1960 Britten met Shostakovich at a concert in London where maestro cellist Rostropovich was giving the UK premiere of Shostakovich’s Cello Symphony. It was to be the start of a long and close friendship between Britten and Rostropovich and life-long respect between the two composers. Marking to the day the centenary of Britten’s birth, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra celebrate with an AngloRussian programme rich in friendship, triumph and Stalinesque scandal. Stepping into Rostropovich’s shoes is Tchaikovsky Prize-winning Johannes Moser, hailed by Gramophone as "one of the finest among the astounding gallery of young cellists".

‘The poetry is in the pity... all a poet can do is warn’. So wrote Wilfred Owen whose poems are ingeniously stitched into the Latin texts of the Requiem in Britten’s own ‘warning’ – composed to mark the re-consecration of Coventry Cathedral following its destruction in World War 2. Scored for massive forces including two orchestras, large choir and a boys’ choir, Britten’s impassioned plea for peace and reconciliation stunned its first audience into silence before heartfelt applause at its 1962 premiere. With a trio of distinguished soloists, and fresh from masterminding last summer’s Three Choirs Festival, Adrian Partington leads an epic and fitting finale to our Britten 100 weekend.

Ahead of our closing Symphony Project devoted to Shostakovich, 20 years after he stepped down as Principal Conductor of the BSO, Conductor Laureate Andrew Litton 'a passionate advocate of Shostakovich' (Star Tribune) - offers a sneak preview with the Symphony No. 6. The symphony was completed on the cusp of World War 2 yet, according to its composer, conveys the ‘wonders of Spring, joy, and youth’. Folk-derived Rimsky Korsakov lifts the lid, and the winner of the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medal should feel particularly ‘at home’ with his Piano Concerto No. 1. ‘Barry Douglas is precisely the big technique pianist that comes out... having both rattled the rafters and made music’ (The Independent).

‘A javelin hurled into the future’ is how Liszt once characterised his music. And when it comes to the Piano Concerto he premiered in 1855 (conducted by Berlioz as it happens), Stephen Hough is the pianist to project it with unassailable insight and strength – ‘if performing Liszt’s piano music was an Olympic event’, declared The Evening Standard, ‘Stephen Hough would be a gold medal contender’. To the left and right of it passions are equally high as Berlioz brushes up his Shakespeare in a work that made Wagner feel like a schoolboy by comparison, while Scriabin’s fevered symphonic poem embodies the fervour of its accompanying poem: ‘I am a moment of illuminating eternity… I am affirmation… I am ecstasy’.

part of the symphonyproject For those admirers braving the freezing cold of Vienna’s Theater an der Wien on 22 Dec 1808 the prospect of an all-Beethoven Akademie must have felt like Christmas come early – and what a present! As well as the premieres of Symphonies 5 and 6, the Piano Concerto No. 4 and the Choral Fantasia, other ‘sundries’ included a sizeable slab of the Mass in C and the dramatic concert aria Ah perfido. Under its young Columbian maestro Andres Orozco-Estrada – and, after January’s Tchaikovsky, recalling Barry Douglas to the Colston Hall stage - the Tonkünstler Orchestra returns to recreate a part of that monumental evening as the two strongly contrasted symphonies go head to head, separated by a concerto whose opening is nothing short of a ‘velvet revolution’.

Over one extraordinary weekend, Colston Hall presents the rare opportunity to hear Brahms’ complete symphonic journey, courtesy of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and acclaimed conductor Kirill Karabits. It’s a journey Brahms himself didn’t undertake lightly. Although the last three symphonies emerged in well under a decade, the first had been almost fifteen years in the making before its premiere in 1876. And while the conductor Hans von Bulow immediately dubbed it ‘Beethoven’s 10th’, Brahms confided to Herman Levi: ‘you don’t know what it’s like always to hear that giant marching along behind me’. Under Kirill Kondrashin the orchestra gave the long-postponed premiere of the 4th Symphony and followed it a year later with that of Babi Yar. Current Principal Conductor Yuri Simonov keeps the ‘special relationship’ burning bright, and pairs the compact 9th Symphony (‘pellucid’ was Shostakovich’s description) with the mighty 10th, premiered in the cultural ‘Soviet Spring’ that followed the death of Stalin and shot through with autobiographical ciphers. ‘Refereeing’ is the concerto that unlocked Rachmaninov’s creative block, played by a pianist who ‘fearlessly embraces the extremes of tenderness and fierce passion’ (The Guardian).
