ENCAUSTICS ON
CLAY WORKSHOP
with Laura Vernon Russell Encaustic painting is an ancient form of painting that uses melted beeswax and resin mixed with colored pigments. It was used by ancient shipbuilders and potters not only for its preservative and waterproofing qualities but also for its numerable aesthetic properties. The nature of encaustic to both preserve and color caused it to be used widely on the stone work of both architecture and statuary. The white marble we see today in the monuments of Greek antiquity was once colored, either boldly or delicately tinted. Interior decorative terra cotta work was also painted with encaustic. This workshop will explore the uses of modern-age encaustic on bisque-fired clay as an alternative to glaze. Students will learn to make encaustic paint, apply wax to 3-D surfaces and through the use of a heat gun and/ or torch and small hand tools to manipulate the surface to create a finish that can be subtle or bold. Most supplies included in class fee. You will be required to provide some additional supplies. Saturday, June 8, 10am-2pm (1 session) $105-Residents/$115-Non-Resident
