TASTE TRAIL
To know a place, start with a meal Why? Because our favourite travel stories so often begin with the perfect pairing, the hole-in-the-wall café, farmers market magic or fruit stand finds. What’s less well-known? The off the beaten path foodie destinations that hide in plain sight, like those found right here in the Shuswap. Arriving from points east, at the base of the Columbia Mountains, the Eagle Valley beckons, giving you a first glimpse of the Shuswap’s lush landscape. From the west, you leave the ranchlands and ponderosa pines of the Thompson to discover Little Shuswap Lake. From the south, the semi-arid Okanagan behind you, is the Spallumcheen valley lush with farm land and forest. Welcome to the Shuswap, where the communities of Armstrong, Chase, Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Enderby, Falkland and the North and South Shuswap share not only great soil conditions and dyed in the wool farm traditions, but a standing invitation to enjoy your next epicurean adventure. Photo: Kari Wilkinson
The terroir is nourished by the Shuswap Watershed, a network of rivers, streams and mountain lakelets that feed our name sake, Shuswap Lake, and along with the mild climate, it affords the region a variety of diary, meat, fruit and produce that belies its compact size. Within two hours, you can visit wineries, distilleries, cideries, breweries, cheese makers, farms, orchards, community markets, amazing restaurants and food shops to fill your heart’s desire. It might be news to you, but folks in these parts have known it for quite some time indeed. A L B E R TA

Fruit grown here is unsurpassed for appearance, color and flavour and finds a ready market wherever offered for sale. At the Provincial Exhibition held last fall, fruit shown from this young settlement took second rank, an excellent testimony to the adapt-ability of Salmon Arm for this class of farming. For the fruit grower, farmer, stock raiser, dairyman and poultryman, there is no more favourable spot than this. - INLAND SENTINEL, 1905
The lush lands of the Secwépemc Nation have long provided indigenous culture and settlers a bounty for which we are very grateful. And these pages are offered as an introduction to the many discoveries that await you here: spirits and cheese, foodie finds, farm to table feasts, family fun, farmers markets and local faves. Meet our farmers and producers, cheesemakers and brewmasters, merchants and grocers, vintners and chefs. Get to know our locals and explore the taste trails of the Shuswap as we do; folksy exchanges at farmers markets, casual chats at coffee houses, catching up over cheese and charcuterie, picnics at music in the park, mountain bike banter at the brew pub, BBQs on the beach, wine tastings after walks in the woods, apres ski soups and sandwiches, down to earth discussions at the downtown diner, festival food truck feasts. Food is knitted into our community conversations. Join us at the casual tables of the Shuswap. Our hope is that you’ll leave fulfilled but hungry for more.

SAVOUR THE
SHUSWAP HIT THE TASTE TRAIL To take on the Shuswap Taste Trails, you need only pack light. Bring your spirit of adventure and your appetite. Walk, drive, boat or bike, there’s many a way to explore the feasts to savour here.
SPIRITS & CHEESE
First, we raise a glass to the vintners, distillers and brewmasters whose local harvest craft wines, beers, spirits and ciders will delight your taste senses. Our relatively northern growing climate and conditions are a delicious advantage. Hearty grapes, grains and fruit ensure robust flavour profiles. These very same conditions also nurture our many dairy herds whose rich milk inspire our local cheesemakers.
6
FOODIE FINDS
And there’s plenty more. We’ll tour just a few of our foodie finds, a tribute to the talented chefs and restaurateurs who call the Shuswap home. Your palate won’t soon forget these excellent eats. We’ll also provide the super foods of the region and we’re sure you’ll be “berry” impressed.
FARM TO TABLE
The fewer the steps between the farm and your table, the more delicious the meal. We’ll put you in the dining chair as we visit a few of the local purveyors who make flavour their first course.
FAMILY FUN
And who better to enjoy this with than our families. We’ll visit a few of the many stops that delight young and old, year after year; giant ice cream cones, mini doughnuts, furry farm friends and playful picnics. Food flavours precious memories, so start planning a big bold BBQ on the beach to celebrate. We’ll help you put the grocery list together.

FARM MARKETS
But none of this would be possible without our farming families whose expertise and experience tend and till to all that we appreciate in the Shuswap; sustenance, sustainability and seasonality. We’ll stop in, sample their fare, visit their fields and find a healthy serving of gratitude along the way.
LOCAL FAVES
Finally, we check in with the locals — a region’s best food reviewers — for our take on what not to miss and where to find it allowing you to immerse yourself in the laid-back lifestyle of the Shuswap.
A FOUR-SEASON AFFAIR
From root vegetables to leafy goodness, summer’s bounty of berries and fruit and fall’s corn and pumpkin plethora, there are four seasons of food in the Shuswap. Whether for a weekend getaway midwinter, a ten day holiday mid-summer, a day trip come spring or fall, rest and refreshment are always on the menu.

OLÉ TO SATURDAYS
The window on Shuswap wineries starts with a lovely summer evening at Marionette Winery, a west-facing hillside vineyard just moments from Salmon Arm’s downtown. Sangria Saturday as it’s come to be known is a welcome opportunity to gather, listen to great music and taste both white and red sangria prepared in the Spanish tradition. The tasting room and patio overlook the vineyard, and local Italian cheese maker Tanto Latte pops in with a sumptuous selection of artisan organic cheese and charcuterie for the celebration.
HEAD UP THE ROAD FOR OLD WORLD CHARM
Uncork and unwind slightly further afield up the road to Larch Hills Winery, one of the top stops in Salmon Arm. Old-world European charm meets iconic BC mountain views. An impressive selection of white, red, rosé, sparkling and dessert wines from this small family-run vineyard where the passion

Silver Creek is home to Ovino Winery. All its award-winning wine is made from the grapes grown on site which benefit from the sun-drenched bench below the mountain overlooking the Salmon Valley, well known for its rich and fertile soil. SOUTH SHUSWAP SOJOURN Spend sunny days at Sunnybrae Vineyards and Winery located in the South Shuswap. This seven and a half acre property at the base of Mount Ida and on the shores of Shuswap Lake has benefitted from generations of farming expertise and their sense of place and connection to the landscape is reflected in their bottles. Try the Happy Camper or the Turner Road Red for your next family gathering.
Also in the South Shuswap, at the base of Fly Hills, is Recline Ridge, a familyowned winery and vineyard. Enjoy the tasting room and picnic area. The Fly Hills area is a popular hiking spot, in fact, the winery’s parking lot is an unofficial trail head. So bring a picnic and pick up a few cans of Wine2Go, a perfect pairing post hillside expedition.
CENTURY OLD FARMS where HISTORY comes alive
The grapes from Waterside Winery, a riverbank vineyard located in Enderby, sip from the river and soak in the sun which makes for premium small lot wines. This century old farm holds a historic place in the community and plays host to many a community event such as their vines and spines bookclub, markets featuring area artisan products and even an easter egg hunt. Eggs of the non-chocolate variety are regularly available from their resident chickens. And consider inviting Shuswap Organics to the party. With their local line up of radish relish, carrot marmalade and tomato jam, the table is better set with them at it. The southern most part of the Shuswap is Armstrong in the Spallumcheen Valley, home to farms and forests and steeped in agricultural history. The Farmstrong Cider Company sits on a picturesque acreage and history comes alive in the making of premium craft ciders from their orchards. The heritage barn now restored, it’s home to meals and markets, tastings and gatherings.

LARCH HILLS WINERY
Don’t miss the next cheese and cider pairing featuring the many artisan delicacies of local cheesemakers including the many varieties produced just down the way at Armstrong Village Cheese Co.
BODACIOUS BREWS AND ARTISAN MOONSHINE
Crannóg Ales is Canada’s first certified organic farmhouse microbrewery. Located in the South Shuswap community of Sorrento, the brewery sits in the middle of the owners’ Left Fields organic farm. The organic ales are brewed to feature local and seasonal ingredients. Deeply rooted in the Irish tradition of sustainability and resilience, they grow their own hops and the spent grains are used for livestock feed and garden compost. By keg or by growler, their bodacious brew is available at local eateries and pubs, markets and at the farm on designated days. Visit the website for seasonal schedules.

Be sure to make a stop at the Barley Station in Salmon Arm, a family-owned brewpub with housemade beers and yummy eats. Priding themselves on the drinkability of their beer that you can enjoy at their casual pub smack-dab in the middle of town, or take them away by the six pack or the growler for enjoyment at home. Their ever changing selection of limited edition seasonal beer is sure to delight but they sell out quickly so check in often. Popular with the locals, a friendly face always greets you at the Station. Sicamous is well-known for its sunshine but lately, its moonshine is making waves too. Welcome to After Dark Distillery, a new and most welcome addition, their line of vodka, gin and moonshine is made with local grain, mountain water and natural flavours. Their small batch spirits, mashed and fermented by hand are a reminder of artisan ways and simpler days. Try some of their Apple Pie, Root Beer, Espresso, Maple or Peach moonshines and take a jar or two home.

TAKE IT TO GO! No doubt, the spirits and cheese trails of the Shuswap will take you many places. If you can’t fit it all in the first time around, do not fret. Independent liquor stores from throughout the region are pleased to feature them on their shelves. Local cheese, bread and crackers like those produced by Happy Days Goat Dairy and Little Red Hen Artisan Bakery are widely available at local markets and grocers. • Askew’s Foods • Blind Bay Village Grocer • Eagle Bay Store • DeMille’s Farm Market • Farmer John’s Market • Hideaway Liquor Store
FOODIE FINDS INSPIRATIONAL LOCAL CULINARY TRADITIONS We all agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, if it’s Sunday, we meet where the sun first hits the waters in the Shuswap, Jack Sam’s Restaurant at Quaaout Lodge and Spa on the traditional territories of the Secwepemc people of the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band. Inspired by the local culinary traditions such as salmon and berries, bison and bannock, the dining here is “a glorious blend of indigenous ingredients and modernity and genuine hospitality” (FoodDay Canada).
FIVE STAR FARE
Five star fare can be found in Falkland at The Rock Eatery so reserve today (it’s required). This little restaurant with big flavours crafts creative cocktails, virtuous veg, meritorious meats and delectable deserts. For a special occasion or an escape from the ordinary, experience this Shuswap landmark.

RICH FOOD FOLKLORE
Far less formal, and located on the TransCanada Highway 1 at the Tappen Esso is a coffee shop known for its killer Korean short ribs and homemade spicy sauce. The hosts delight in sharing their authentic meals with their pleasantly surprised guests. Just ten minutes more and you’re in Downtown Salmon Arm, as charming as it is compact. Within three small city blocks is to be found a world of flavours - Italian, Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, Parisian, Mexican and old-fashioned homemade pies. Our first stop is Hanoi 36 on Hudson Avenue, inspired by the food vendors in the 36 quarter of the North Vietnamese city. Working with local suppliers and producers, the restaurant is a tribute to community — both the historic roots and the new roots the family is building in Salmon Arm — through a rich food folklore.

Saturdays. Whether you have fish tacos on the patio or enchiladas in the dining room, you’ll be sure to olé your way through the rest of the day. Take a bottle of their house made hot sauce with you as a spicy souvenir of your visit here. At first glance, it has all the markings of a quaint tea shoppe but Café Tasse, in the lobby of the Prestige Harbourfront Resort is a full on french affair featuring made from scratch crepes, patisseries, galettes, baguettes, as well as an espresso, wine and beer bar to perfectly accompany your Parisian perk. To cleanse and purify, visit Smudge Whole Food Noshery, a plant-based eatery on Hudson Avenue. The guilt-free gourmet vibe extends to the decor and compostable packaging. SHUSWAP SELECTIONS
Did you know that the haskap berry, grown in the Shuswap, has three times the anti-oxidants of a blueberry? A commercial crop is grown at High Mountain Farms and the berry, with its thinner skin and smaller seeds, makes it ideal for food processors looking to add flavour to their spirits, juices, syrups and sauces. You can also find haskap berries at farmers markets, Askew’s Foods and DeMille’s Farm Market. And speaking of berries, the elderberry, a healthy crop of which is grown in Salmon Arm at Elderberry Grove, has antibiotic compounds and is nature’s natural flu remedy. Organically grown, the locally produced elderberry syrup is available at the farm, at local markets and through the online farm store.

FROM THEIR FARMS TO YOUR TABLES An unusual site to be sure, but in the Shuswap, asparagus season is such a big deal it comes complete with its own mascots, Aspa and Gus who visit all four Askew’s Foods stores to celebrate its arrival. Orchard Blossom Honey, creates Okanagan Wildflower honey and flavoured honey using creamed honey at their farm store. Armstrong Apiaries Honey has received many prestigious awards for their honey. The Macdonald family have been producing an artisanal quality of the delicious local wildflower honey for over thirty years. Bring your bucket and fill it up at their farm gates. Located beside its mill in Armstrong, Rogers (bulkfood store) features their flour and grain products, baking supplies, nuts and dried fruits. In addition, baking classes and special events bring the food community together on a regular basis.

Fieldstone Organics, also in Armstrong, is a certified organic grain handling facility working with local farmers to grow the best crops in the healthiest soil bringing barley, buckwheat, flax, lentils, oats, spelt, wheat and rye to retail and wholesale customers. This includes the milling and flaking equipment needed to bring the whole grain goodness straight into the home kitchen. The Berry Patch comes by its name honestly featuring freshly picked strawberries, raspberries and blueberries all season long. Tasty Acres is a certified organic farm and nursery owned by Pim and MaryAnn originally from Holland. He’s a horticulturalist and she’s a floral designer. Together, they grow a wide variety of plants, berries, apples, pears and plums. When they’re not at the farm greeting U-pick guests or hosting workshops, they’re often found at local food and market events.

OUR SEASONAL BEST
BUCKETS OF GOODNESS At Geier’s Fruit and Berry Farm, a decades old farm in Salmon Arm, they do the growing and you do the picking. From early season strawberries, cherries, raspberries to late season plums, stop in and have some fun in their orchard. At Sandy Acres Berry Farm, they only sell what they grow. In addition to berries and tree fruit, they sell fresh vegetables, produce, walnuts, jams and syrups. Tour groups welcome and there’s plenty of room to turn the RV around and load it up with farm fresh goodies. The Farmer’s Pantry in Salmon Arm is a retail tribute to all that is good about the Shuswap. Stop in to explore all the goodness in store. Three generations of the Stobbes family prepared, planted, watered, weeded and

pruned their sixty acre blueberry patch. Madalea Growers Blueberry Farm in Mara offers three varieties of blueberries: Duke, Draper and Liberty. Enderberry Farm on 21 acres of rolling hills and forest grows over 50 varieties of vegetables, fruits and herbs and tend a flock of heritage pasture raised laying hens and a small herd of dairy goats. In addition to selling fresh from the farm, they also preserve the bounty in artisan jams and pickles. Organic goodness awaits you on the north side of Shuswap Lake at The Spotted Moose Farm in Celista. This small family farm provides a range of organically grown fruit and vegetables spring thru fall, along with dried fruit, garlic and herbal tea. They also offer a limited amount of free range pork, turkey and duck raised on the farm.
FARM TO TABLE
fIELD TRIP TOOLS & TIPS There are dozens of u-pick and farm stalls in the Shuswap – from fruit and veg to eggs and flowers – here are a few tips to ensure your success. • Growers are best to decide when a crop is picked. Be sure to check in on social media or by phone first.

• If you’re making a day of it, plan a circle route so you can fit more in. The main highways get busy but the back roads are a more pleasant pace. • It’s hot in the summer. Pack a cooler with ice and bring containers to protect your bounty. • Sunscreen, a hat and water. But you already knew that. • Farmers don’t wear flip flops for a reason. • Keep an eye on the little ones. • Bring cash rather than cards. Most transactions happen road side or mid field. • Let them know you enjoyed it. Nothing supports farmers like happy customers. Social media is ideal to share a compliment and encourage others to buy direct from hard working farmers.

TALL TALES AND EVEN BIGGER
ICE CREAM CONES The day has just begun and we’re going to have some family fun but first, coffee. Stop in at Sutherland’s Bakery at the north end of Enderby for that and plenty more. Grab a couple of their famous breakfast sandwiches or fresh baked goods (who could resist) and make your way to historic O’Keefe Ranch at the southern most point of the region. Take in the sites and sounds of life on the ranch in the old days. Mosey on over to the Cattleman’s Club Restaurant for some lunch. Beat the afternoon heat in Armstrong at the Memorial Park outdoor swimming pool, splash pad and playground then head Sicamous way for a visit to D Dutchmen Dairy, a local landmark. You’ll know you’re almost there when you see the big red barn and possibly a line up out the door as people wait for their turn to choose from the dozens of flavours of old-fashioned home-made ice cream. Enjoy that cone as you tour around the farm and visit with the animals. And where there’s ice cream, there’s also milk and cheese conveniently packaged and ready to take with you.

THE CANDY VAULT
Photo: Kari Wilkinson
Sicamous Beach Park is the perfect spot to watch life on the lake go by with a designated swim area and great views. As for dinner, head over to Moose Mulligan’s on the channel between Shuswap and Mara Lakes. The patio is a popular spot to dine and watch the boats parade back and forth. Joe Schmuck’s Roadhouse, a welcome stop for travellers, is a motel and campground with a full service restaurant. A great place to enjoy family friendly comfort food with attitude. Pizza on the patio is always a good idea. If you’re headed the Salmon Arm way, stop at RJ Haney Heritage Village and Museum to explore the sights and sounds of the olden days. Enjoy tea and a scone with the new friends you’ll meet; a blacksmith, a school marm or maybe a gold panner. Canoe Beach, a few minutes drive away, is a popular stop with visitors and locals alike. A sandy beach, a grassy play area, a beach volley ball court and boat launch as well as a secluded dog park so puppies can have a play. Centre stage, you’ll find Top Jimmy’s Canoe Beach Café offering all the best beach day snacks. Their famous zombie burger is off the charts. DeMille’s Farm Market is always a hit with the kids. Grab an ice cream cone and a bag of grain and treat the farm animals.
WANDER AROUND, PACK A PICNIC, OR GET GRILLINg! The splash pad at Blackburn Park in the centre of Salmon Arm is also a great spot to chill out and cool off, although the burritos at Rosa’s Taco Stand are always a hot commodity.

SPROKKETS CAFÉ

Wander around the downtown. The Ross Street Plaza often features local musicians and with any luck, Fire on Wheels, a mobile purveyor of handcrafted pizza will be on site to tempt your taste buds. The kids can dance off their sugar rush from their visit to The Candy Vault, in the former bank of Nova Scotia building, where candy from around the world is the new currency. Over to the South Shuswap, the Tappen Co-op on Trans Canada Highway 1 is your colossal ice cream cone pit stop. With a full selection of groceries and prepared foods, you can pack a picnic and enjoy the beach at Sunnybrae Park just a few minutes drive away. Further down the highway in Blind Bay, make time for Sprokkets Café, part of the Dreamcycle Motorcycle Museum. No surprise that it’s named as one of the top rider stops in the world given its scratch-made menu of soups, sandwiches, and motorcycle themed desserts. Sidecar square for dessert? Yes, please. Finz Bar and Grill is a great way to end a fun family day. Located lakeside, the covered patio showcases incredible Shuswap views, especially at sunset. Enjoy ‘Fresh Catch Fridays’. or ‘Brunch in the Bay’ on Sundays. Menu changes weekly. It’s the social centre of Finz Resort, a marina and RV Campground, a favourite home away from home for so many.
22
BIG BOLD BEACH BBQ! At every stop in the Shuswap, is yet another ingredient to add to the perfect beach BBQ; hand-cut steaks at Windmill Meats in the Westgate Public Market, artisan sausages from Sedo’s Old Fashioned Butcher and Deli, local poultry from Farmcrest Foods, all the fixings from the Blind Bay Village Grocer including Caliente Hot Sauce, a local favourite made in-house at Cantina Vallarta in Salmon Arm.
DESSERT IS EASY AS PIE And for dessert? Why, pie, of course. Visit Askew’s Foods to pick up a Laura’s Pies ready for the oven. While there, grab a pound of locally roasted Shuswap Coffee Co. for the morning. It’s going to be another busy day!

SOWING THE
SEEDS OF OUR FUTURE HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE
Here a farm, there a farm, most everywhere a farmer’s farm. With over 600 farms in the region, the Shuswap’s deep agricultural roots are proudly on display. And we can’t think of a better way to spend the day than to visit with the hardworking families who sustain us. Come growing season, you have your pick of farmers markets set up in each of our communities in celebration of the bounty of fresh food in this area. Bring your

reusable grocery bags — there’s lots to tempt your taste buds. The Armstrong Farmer’s Market is the longest continuing running market in the province. What better place to visit then where the motto is Make It, Bake it and Grow it. You’ll find conventional and organic vegetables and fruits, local honey, homemade bread and baked goods, jams and jellies, cheeses, free range eggs, plants and flowers as well as a selection of artisan crafts. Open Saturdays. The Enderby Open Air Market is held Fridays at the beautiful Splatsin Centre and moves indoors for the winter. Year round, local vendors offer a great selection of veggies, meat, bread, cheese, fruit, chocolate, beer, and artisan crafts on Fridays from 10 until 2. Later in the day, you can head to the Sicamous Farmer’s Market located in the Legion parking lot. A great way to kick off the weekend from Canada Day to Labour Day.

FARM MARKETS
FARM MARKETS
SALMON ARM DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET
FARM MARKET SCENE As the largest community in the Shuswap, Salmon Arm has a solid share of the farm market scene. There are three daily farm markets and three community weekly ones. DeMille’s Farm Market at the western edge of town carries you a world away. A working farm with a seven day a week market has a petting zoo and corn maze. If winter weather allows, one of the fields is transformed into an ice rink. Look for the water tower and you’ve found DeMille’s. If it’s in season, you’ll find it fresh here. Pedro’s Farm & Garden Market just down the way is also open daily. The farm has been growing goodness for three generations and supports many other local farmers and producers. Their popular pies are the perfect accompaniment to special occasions and don’t miss Pedro’s own Salmon Arm grown pickling cucumbers.
26
Westgate Market is a local success story. Once an empty department store, the site and building have been re-imagined as a spacious and vibrant market with artists and artisans, food stores and café. Check out Gym of Rock, a climbing gym for the kids, while you shop. Westside Stores, the anchor tenant, and local purveyor of outdoor gear is a convenient stop for campers and explorers alike. The Downtown Salmon Arm Market is a recent addition and showcases local produce and products every Saturday through summer and fall. A hit with the locals, arrive early to get the best selection at the Ross Street Plaza. You can also visit both the Salmon Arm Community Market set up across from the Fall Fair grounds on Friday mornings or the All Organic Farmers Market on Wednesday afternoons at the Uptown Askews Foods parking lot. Both put local produce and producers first and there’s something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.

The Chase Farm & Craft Market is held Fridays while the Sorrento Village Market is held on Saturdays. In the North Shuswap, there are markets in both Celista on Wednesdays and Scotch Creek on Sundays. Grindrod on Hwy 97 between Enderby and Mara Lake is home to Farmer John’s Market featuring fresh fruit and veggies, pasture raised pork and lamb as well as a full service café and restaurant. One of the few SPCA certified farms in BC, it’s no surprise the cows always seem happy to see you. In fact, one of the unique features of this dairy barn is the robotic milker. The cows love it. Take a tour and see why! From Grindrod, make your way to Sicamous and stop in at Fruit World where a vast selection of the best fruit and produce from around the region is found. These local food specialists are committed to freshness and fairness in all that they offer.

Ecotreats with locations in both Salmon Arm and Scotch Creek in the North Shuswap is as coffee shop as it gets. Great baristas, great baked goods and a great way to get the Shuswap scuttlebutt. Hats off to the Brown Derby in Armstrong. Their $2.99 breakfast is as legendary as the owners’ hospitality. Fast, friendly and fuss-free, let it be the starting off point of your Armstrong adventures. The hallmark of a great diner is a warm welcome and breakfast “eggs”actly as you like it. Hungry Jack’s is central to Enderby’s down to earth appeal and you can always count on good company and a great meal. No leaps of faith here, Sutherland’s Bakery, located in Enderby, is a solid choice for breakfast and lunch to go. Locals rely on classic bakery favourites, and freshly made coffee and sandwiches for early morning take-out. G&G Kitchen and Tap always have ways of making your feel special. Such is the case in Sicamous where pizza, pasta, burgers and beers pair perfectly with the lakeside lifestyle in Sicamous. The open kitchen is your opportunity to marvel at the majestic pastry that makes the pies, the pies that make the meals and the meals that make the memories. The Shuswap Pie Company, of You’ve Got to Eat Here Food Network fame is the real deal.

TANTO LATTE
TASTE EXPLOSION Souvlaki your way to Sorrento where Stratis Mediterranean Grill will thrill you taste buds with traditional greek delicacies. This off the beaten path family-owned restaurant is the tzatziki of town. Breakfast all day on Golf Course Drive in Blind Bay, taste the home made difference at Spinnaker Café. Housemade brined salmon, smoked bacon and community pride is always on the menu. Just steps away from Shuswap Provincial Park is The Scotch Creek Hub, a popular spot for afternoon ice cream and evening ‘sharezies’ and mains. The Hub brings the community together through food and beverage, music and events. Far out food in Falkland is far from ordinary at The Rock Eatery. The food here is authentic and memorable. Make a reservation.

In the mood to celebrate? Let’s go to Andiamo Ristorante Italiano, a local legend on the Salmon Arm restaurant scene. Not unlike the tiramisu dessert the locals rave about, this place is a real pick me up to remember. Tanto Latte is located in Salmon Arm, but tastes like you’re in Italy. Enjoy locally made artisan, organic italian cheese paired with charcuterie, made-from scratch soups and one of the best espresso’s in the region. A must stop for a indulgent lunch date. Great days are often celebrated by gathering at the local pub. In Salmon Arm, enjoy a craft brew along with fish and chips Sundays at the Crown and Anchor. The 19th hole is above par at Duffer’s Den overlooking Shuswap Lake Estates golf course. Take a ride to the Riverfront Pub & Grill in Grindrod and enjoy scenic views and great grub. The Anchor Inn in Armstrong might be land locked but the food and decor will send your ship a sailing.

A tasty fork in the road, Highway 97 A and B take you through some of the Shuswap’s most restful and refreshing stops. Visit a working flour mill or an artisan cheese production facility. Have lunch at a local bistro and take a walk in a historic winery. Taste some Monashee mountain moonshine or some refreshingly crisp apple cider. Rather than just pass by their fields, stop in and say hello to our hard working framers and grab a snack for the next leg of the journey. Or take a load off and watch as the houseboats parade back and forth under the bridge from the patio of Moose Mulligan’s between Mara and Shuswap Lake. Delightful distractions will help you go the distance.
FLAVOURFUL FIELD TRIPS Get more and explore off the beaten track
Off the beaten track awaits delicious adventures and delectable escapes well worth adding a few days to your journey. As diverse as the Shuswap landscape is, it is remarkably compact. As such, within a few hours, you can get a real taste of what each of the regions has to offer: Armstrong and Spallumcheen’s friendly farm feel, Falkland’s wild west vibe, Enderby’s little city charm, Salmon Arm’s serendipity, the South Shuswap relaxed pace, the rugged resilience of the North Shuswap, Chase’s welcoming nature and the small town spirit of Sicamous and the Eagle Valley. You won’t soon forget the flavour of this place, far from the ordinary and closer than you think.

Road warriors know that a trip is not measured by kilometres so much as the stops along the way. Whatever your point A to point B, when in the Shuswap, there’s plenty to taste, do and see whether you’re travelling on the east-west corridor of Canada’s longest highway or the north south Highway 97 corridor, BC’s longest. So stop in along the way and fuel up with great food, great fun and a taste of our beautiful, casual, down to earth Shuswap hospitality. QUAAOUT RESORT & SPA
