The Shuswap is the perfect place to slow down, recharge and reconnect in every season. The Shuswap is a place where incredible nature comes to rest in the soul. A singular place beckoning to restless singular soles. A place to ascend towering cliffs, glide across snowy meadows, listen to the whispers of a lush forest, or step inside an inviting café, let go of your hurry, stay awhile, and smile. It’s a place for families, where you can jump into incredibly warm water from the deck of a houseboat or wander along rolling trails. A place where you can golf, then bike, then swim, then dine on fine local fare and enjoy an evening out on the town. It’s a place where you can taste great wines and tour vineyards, explore hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing cycle of the salmon, and watch the clear night sky wheel overhead. A place to revel in culture and community and to create your own stories of simplicity and abundance. It’s a place where you can change into your hiking shoes, biking shoes, snow shoes, or, simply put your feet up, and do sweet nothing at all.

Snowmobilers can take advantage of four spectacular riding areas with hundreds of kilometres of groomed and ungroomed trails – an exceptional riding experience. Adventurous cross-country skiers can try the Larch Hills Traverse‚ a 42 km trail traveling from Salmon Arm to Sicamous, with stunning vistas of Shuswap and Mara Lakes.

Don Weixl

Ever imagined traveling wherever you want around a massive warm-water lake? For a uniquely Shuswap vacation, make the fantasy a reality in Sicamous, the Houseboating Capital of Canada.

Welcome to Sicamous - it’ll surprise you! Sicamous is a way of life. Where the energy of nature sparks the energy of people - no matter where you sit on the energy dial. Sicamous and its neighbours – Malakwa, Eagle Valley, Craigellachie, and Three Valley Gap – boast an astounding natural backdrop for life on the water and the land. From cabins to canoeing, camping to snowmobiling, hiking to houseboating and everything in-between, whether you’re looking to relax and sun-soak or for something more adventurous, Sicamous has it all. In spring, summer, and fall you can enjoy every water sport imaginable: houseboating, leisure boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, swimming, waterskiing, wakeboarding, fishing, and windsurfing. But that doesn’t water down our other great qualities! The Sicamous area is full of family-friendly activities. Visit the Last Spike, Skytrek or the Enchanted Forest. And of course, an ice cream from D Dutchman Dairy is the perfect end (or beginning) to any summer day.

birding

The Shuswap’s shimmering lakes, rich wetlands, and lush forests don’t just appeal to people – our fine-feathered friends love to perch here too. In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap – some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young. Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the ‘walking on

water’ dance of the Western Grebe. The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC, and one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay. Take the family out for a canoe trip to share in the magic up close.

Birding is a wonderful way to learn about our natural surroundings, too. Numerous tree species, wildflowers, and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats. salmon run AT Tsútswecw PROVINCIAL PARK

During October, the banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, become the scene of a natural miracle.

Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km river welcome Sockeye Salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again – traveling over 4,000 km in their lifetime.

View the salmon run from the banks of the Adams River at Tsútswecw Provincial Park (formerly known as Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park). Explore 26 km of trails offering exceptional salmon viewing and bird-watching opportunities. The Adams River Salmon Society maintains an interpretive centre and hosts guided walks.

The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye Salmon breeding areas in North America – important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap. Salmon have helped to sustain the Secwepemc people for thousands of years. Sockeye Salmon return to the Adams River each year, and in 2022 – the next dominant year in the four-year migration cycle – hundreds of thousands of fish are expected to return home to spawn.

The Adams River puts on an incredible show, but it’s not the only place to view spawning salmon. Thousands of fish return to lakes and rivers throughout the region. Watch for flashes of red as they head upstream!

For more information, visit ShuswapTourism.ca or SalmonSociety.com

Various other species also return throughout the summer and fall. Watch for Pink, Chinook and Coho Salmon, as well as Rainbow Trout and Steelhead Trout.

Where to stay:

Hans Wardell

Best Western Sicamous Inn, Anchor Riverfront Motel, and Joe Schmuck’s Roadhouse in Sicamous love to cater to sledders.

Where to eat: Moose Mulligan’s, the Burner Grille, or Joe Schmuck’s are all favourites with the sledding crowd.

From Sicamous access four incredible riding areas – each with its own cabin! Experience amazing powder at your doorstep at Blue Lake, Eagle Pass, Owlhead, and Queest. Head to Hunter’s Range from Sicamous or Enderby to play in lesser-known deep powder.

First-timers: Novice sledders and families can spend a day enjoying the wide open sub-alpine and alpine terrain at Blue Lake. Warm up on the training hill – and in the chalet nearby – and be sure to bring your camera. For more information and trail conditions, visit www.SledSicamous.com.

Varied terrain means there’s a magical, memorable ride waiting for everyone: new sledders, touring families, fun riders, and thrill-seekers alike.

From Salmon Arm, follow groomed trails from Fly Hills to Skimikin, and free-ride through open meadows and clear cuts, and rest in one of several warming huts. For truly unforgettable sledding, venture to open, undulating, high alpine meadows at Crowfoot in the North Shuswap.
