6. Shuswap Lake is large and conditions can change quickly. Be mindful of changing weather conditions - as storms can blow in quickly. If a storm is approaching, get off the water. If you get caught in bad weather, you will need advanced operating skills in order to return to the dock safely. Larger vessels have the right of way. Houseboats move slowly and take a long time to change course. As a boat operator in Canada you are legally responsible for equipping yourself, your passengers and your boat with the right equipment. You are also responsible for operating your boat in a safe and courteous manner and for ensuring the safety of your passengers and other boaters on the water. Failure to do so could result in fines and penalties.

THE BEACH AT MEMORIAL PARK Chase: Sandy beach, wharf, kids playgrounds, and dog area (behind the stage).
Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km river welcome Sockeye Salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleution Islands and back again - traveling over 4,000 km in their lifetime. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye Salmon breeding areas in North America - important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap. Salmon have helped to sustain the Secwepemc people for thousands of years.

Very Shallow!
Shuswap Marine Park Shuswap Marine is comprised of 23 sites located around the perimeter of Shuswap Lake. All locations are popular for fishing and water sports; hiking and nature study are popular at some sites. Some sites are road accessible, but most are water-access only. Facilities at the sites vary from nothing to 3 or 4 wilderness tenting sites with a pit toilet. Anglers take note: Shuswap Lake contains 19 species of fish!
Has your watercraft been outside of BC in the last 30 days? If YES, your watercraft might be transporting invasive zebra or quagga mussels.
Shuswap Lake is shaped like an H, and is made up of four large arms: the Shuswap Lake Main Arm, Seymour Arm, Anstey Arm, and Salmon Arm. The product of the glacial scouring that also rounded the surrounding Shuswap Highlands, all four arms converge at Cinnemousun Narrows, northeast of Sicamous. Camping permits and fishing permits are required in advance.
Fortunately, as best as we know, the Okanagan and Shuswap is still free from invasive mussels. Let’s keep it that way.
Zebra and quagga mussels are closely-related mollusks that originate from freshwater lakes in Russia and Ukraine and are nonnative to North America. They live in freshwater – such as lakes and rivers – and are invasive, known to encrust and corrode hard surfaces and cause serious harm to waters where they become established.
View the salmon run from the banks of the Adams River at Tsútswecw Provincial Park (Roderick Haig-Brown ). From September 29 to October 21, 2018, the park hosts the Salute to the Sockeye festival where food, artisans and Indigenous experiences accompany the spectacle of spawning fish. Attend the festival then explore 26 km of park trails that offer exceptional nature viewing and bird-watching opportunities. For more information visit ShuswapTourism.ca or SalmonSociety.com
