Balmoral Trailhead
v ie
VARIOUS KMS A go-to early season bike ride in the Shuswap as it often is snow free earlier than other trails. A network of trails along the Adams River, located between Adams Lake and Shuswap Lake. Dry forest above the river, an impressive array of human and natural history, scenic beauty, distinctive trail structures, river views, forest, wildflowers, mosses, ferns and wildlife. The canyon and its pools are a favourite area on this trail for anglers and picnickers. Below the canyon is a large water pool with a sandy beach. This is a fascinating place to visit any time of year, but particularly in early October during the run of the Adams River Sockeye salmon, one of the largest Sockeye salmon runs in North America.

Along with the city’s feature trail systems, like the Turner Creek Trail, South Canoe Trail System, Foreshore Raven Trail, Park Hill, Coyote Park, South Canoe, Little Mountain, and Shuswap Memorial Cemetery, new greenway links continue to be added throughout the community. These new trail corridors create interesting outings for cycling. Ride the entire route or choose from a couple of areas - and stop along the way for a refreshment at one of the local eateries and cafés. Watch for the new community greenway trail signs.

Due to planned highway twinning, parking on the Sicamous end is currently at Silver Sands Beach. Coming off the end of the Larch Hills Traverse, descend the gravel road to the highway and cross the bridge to enter Sicamous via the pedestrian sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.

Mountain bikers often ride from Salmon Arm to Sicamous. Riding the other direction from Sicamous to Salmon Arm is a harder ride. The Sicamous Switchbacks are a particularly good out-and-back for a shorter ride. There are scattered, yet rewarding view points along the way.

The original Rubberhead trail was built in the early 90’s and is still one of the more challenging descents in the Shuswap. The network has since expanded to include 42 KM of trail and close to 900 M of elevation. This is a great trail network for people who like to shuttle. Want to pedal? The climbing trail, Double D, in combination with Upper Rubberhead now takes you to the 7 KM mark on the 110FSR. Ravine is always a fan favourite. Climbing up to Muffin Top and linking up Veggie Delight and/or Meat Grinder is well worth it. A blue rated Jump Line (Alvin’s Greatest Hits) has added a missing piece to the overall network.

FAST, ROLLING SINGLE TRACK! DEFINITELY AN UNDERRATEd REGIONAL CLASSIC!
Often done as an out-and-back or a semi loop via the 260 FSR. The east side is all single track following Reinecker Creek. Once you are above Herald Provincial Park, there is fast, rolling single track which trends uphill heading north and down hill heading south. This is an underrated regional classic.

BALMORAL TO WHITE LAKE Starting at the Balmoral Trailhead and ending at the John Evdokimoff Mountain Bike Skills Park, the lower Balmoral network is a series of loops through open forests with scattered views of Shuswap Lake. A good spot for younger or less experienced riders. The John Evdokimoff Mountain Bike Skills Park on the White Lake side is a regional park with picnic tables and a mountain bike skills park which will be redeveloped in 2019.

South Canoe is the most popular trail network in the Shuswap. Being close to town, it makes for a great after work rip. This multi use trail network hosts the annual Salty Dog 6 hour enduro mountain bike race. It is also the western trailhead to the Larch Hills Traverse. This is a network of largely dual directional trails which can be linked up in a variety of ways. A favourite quick local ride is to take the climbing trail out of the parking lot, X-Cut, Bear Den, Mo Buddah to the tower, Flip Side, KC, Paranoia, and PPT back to the parking lot. It’s easy to add or subtract from this ride as time or energy allows.

TRAIL SAFETY ! [
Respect trail and road closures. Stay on the trail. Control your bicycle at all times. Yield to horses: Stop, pull over, and talk to the horse and rider. Plan ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area, prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair. Carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.

The region’s premier nordic ski area provides year round opportunity for recreational cyclists looking for more of a mixed back road tour than a full single track experience. Multiple trail options include visits to old growth forest, spectacular views over the surrounding valleys on the higher trails, and visits to Tom’s Shelter, South Hub, and the tiny Cec’s Cabin just south of Larch Lake. Several long distance cross country options for cyclists can be linked to/from the nordic centre including connections with South Canoe, Rubberhead, and the Larch Hills Traverse route to Sicamous. The roads and trails vary in surface types, from well maintained logging roads to narrow former horse logging roads, with some single track.
