BEAUTIFUL, CASUAL, DOWN-TO-EARTH

Discover 8 Distinct Regions

AND FIND YOURSELF IN THE SHUSWAP Far from ordinary and closer than you think, welcome here. The heart of the traditional territories of the Secwepemc, the meeting of the waters, the Shuswap is a place of gathering. We celebrate the pairing of meaningful experiences. Cycle to a vineyard or paint at the pub, paddle to the park or hike to the hot spring. We live to explore. And every day with us means you’ll find a little more. It’s a place for families, where you can jump into warm waters from the deck of a houseboat or wander through the woods. A place where you can float down the river or bike down the pier where ice cream is in store. Comb the beach or drive a go-kart. Stay up late for the drive-in or get up early when the fish start. 8 | www.shuswaptourism.ca

It’s a place for flavour where you can taste great wines, spirits, craft ciders and beers, explore farmers’ fields and delight in a delicious meal. A place to revel in culture and community; art in the park, music by the shore or theatre under the stars. It’s a place for adventure where you can change into your hiking shoes, biking shoes, snow shoes, or, bury your toes in the sand and do nothing more. Find hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing cycle of the salmon, and marvel at the beauty of it all. It’s a place of wonder. From scintillating sunrises to spectacular stargazing, you’ll find experiences to soothe your soul, inspire ideas and mark memorable moments that will last a lifetime.

The Shuswap’s wineries are family-run businesses that produce wines so fine they compete on par with international ones. Magnificent Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Rieslings, Siegerrebes, to name a few, that have all won national awards.

day 2: Head out to Ovino Winery in Silver Creek for some local varietals, then head east to Farmstrong Cidery near Armstrong. Water’s Edge Winery awaits in Enderby, and you have to try Baccata Ridge’s blueberry wines in Grindrod. Head up to Larch Hills Winery, one of North America’s highest elevation wineries, before finishing off your day at Marionette Winery in Salmon Arm followed by dinner and a brew at the Barley Station Brew Pub.

GATHER ROUND FOR SOME

SHUSWAP SOUND AND LET THE MUSIC PLAY

Salmon Arm’s acclaimed Roots & Blues festival is a highlight of BC’s music scene. The Roots & Blues festival showcases some of the world’s best blues, world, folk, zydeco, alternative, funk, and reggae music, all in the welcoming, visually arresting setting of the Shuswap! For over 25 years, the festival has been a highlight of BC’s cultural calendar. This incredibly popular outdoor music festival draws over 25,000 enthusiastic attendees and features musicians from Canada and around the world. The festival has become a prominent link on the national festival circuit and is considered among the top roots festivals in Canada. 40 | www.shuswaptourism.ca

The sounds are great, the atmosphere is incomparable, and there’s music and activities for all members of the family. Children 12 and under admitted free with adults. In many ways, music is the heartbeat of our communities as we gather regularly for the small hall music crawl, rural coffee houses, symphony and choir performances, and music in the parks most every night in the summer. The talent and passion of our musicians and singers ensures we’ve always got our groove on. If music is your thing too, come visit and be sure to grab a selfie with what we think is the world’s largest (and most awesome) treble clef sculpture in downtown Salmon Arm.

ADAMS RIVER SALMON RUN

Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km river welcome Sockeye salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again, traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime.

ADAMS RIVER SOCKEYE

SALMON RUN During October, the banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, host a natural miracle

The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye salmon breeding areas in North America. Important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap, salmon have helped to sustain the Secwepemc people for thousands of years. Sockeye salmon return to the Adams River each year, and in 2022 — the next dominant year in the four-year migration cycle — hundreds of thousands of fish are expected to return home to spawn.

The Adams River Salmon Society maintains an interpretive centre and hosts guided walks. The Adams River puts on an incredible show, but it’s not the only place to view spawning salmon. In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap, some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young. Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the walking on water dance of the Western Grebe. The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC and one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay. Take the family out for a canoe trip to share in the magic up close.

Our sunny summers are ideal for relaxed days on the road and car buffs will find themselves in good company here. There are car shows and cruise-ins all season long! Paved back roads mean that you don’t need to stress on fast-paced four-lane freeways and we’ve got plenty of gravel roads too for the real get-away-from-it-all ride. And a great bonus? Your windshield or visor will appreciate our lack of bugs!

Check out vintage bikes and catch a restoration in action at Dreamcycle Motorcycle Museum, then park yourself at Sprokkets Café for a homemade lunch. Visit dreamcycle.ca for more information.

Pick up a bag lunch at DeMille’s Farm Market in Salmon Arm on your way out – call ahead to have one prepared.

In the colder months, our velvety night skies get deeper and our days simply sparkle! The Shuswap’s legendary Monashee powder makes winter dreams come true. We’ve got an endless variety of terrain — from gentle hills to rugged slopes — and easy driving access to countless trailheads. The Shuswap offers excellent alpine and nordic skiing opportunities, snowboarding, and backcountry touring, making it a great central location for an incredible BC ski vacation. If snowmobiling is more your style, here’s your next amazing adventure. All across the Shuswap you’ll find great powder, challenging climbs and fun bowls in which to play. Stop in at one of the hilltop chalets to warm up and visit along the way.

WINTER ADVENUTRE

PEAK EXPERIENCES

BIG MOUNTAINS. BIG SNOW.

Nestled in the Eagle Valley, the Sicamous area hosts some of the best alpine snowmobiling in Western Canada. Deep snow, powder filled open bowls, endless meadows, groomed trails, breathtaking alpine scenery and spectacular lake views. From Sicamous you can access Blue Lake, Eagle Pass, Owlhead and Queest on regularly groomed forest service roads. Each area has a cozy cabin to warm up in. Head to Hunter’s Range from Sicamous or Enderby to another favourite sledding area with deep powder and high alpine bowls. From Salmon Arm, follow groomed trails from Fly Hills to Skimikin, and free-ride through open meadows and clear cuts, and rest in one of several warming huts. For truly unforgettable sledding, venture to open, undulating, high alpine meadows at Crowfoot in the North Shuswap. This remote area features the Grizzly Lodge, one of BC’s most desirable sled-in lodges. It is always a smart idea to check the status of the snow pack. Visit sledsicamous.com for trail, weather, and avalanche conditions, and visit avalanche.ca for snow and avalanche updates. When it’s time for a break–or if some group members prefer urban adventures– head into Sicamous or Salmon Arm to explore boutique shops and cozy cafés, or enjoy a robust meal at a local pub.
