KIDS DON’T FLOAT but PFDs do!
LIFEJACKET LOANER STATIONS The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station on Shuswap Lake wants kids to stay safe in the water. If a child needs a personal flotation device (PFD), parents are welcome to borrow one at a kiosk. Parents must ensure they choose the right size PFD for their child and that it is properly worn while boating or swimming. Parents are asked to return the PFD when they are through for other kids to use. Kiosks are located throughout Shuswap Lake:

Stay SAFE On the lake
A boater’s licence (Pleasure Craft Licence) is required on all BC waterways. For details visit: www.tc.gc. Shuswap Lake is large and conditions can change without warning. Be mindful of changing weather conditions - storms can blow in quickly. If a storm is approaching, get off the water. If you get caught in bad weather, you will need advanced operating skills in order to return to a dock safely. Larger vessels have the right of way. Houseboats move slowly and take a long time to change course. As a boat operator in Canada you are legally responsible for equipping yourself, your passengers and your boat with the right equipment. You are also responsible for operating your boat in a safe and courteous manner and for ensuring the safety of your passengers and other boaters on the water. Failure to do so could result in fines and penalties.
Watch for the sandbars towards the end of July when water levels drop. No wake zone in effect from outer marker through to the other end of the Sicamous Channel out to Mara Lake.

Zebra and quagga mussels are closely-related mollusks that originate from freshwater lakes in Russia and Ukraine and are non-native to North America. They live in freshwater – such as lakes and rivers – and are invasive, known to encrust and corrode hard surfaces and cause serious harm to waters where they become established.
Each fall, the quiet waters of the 12 km Adams River welcome Sockeye Salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific Ocean, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleution Islands and back again - traveling over 4,000 km in their lifetime. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye Salmon breeding areas in North America - important not only to local ecology, but to the history and culture of the Shuswap. Salmon have helped to sustain the Secwepemc people for thousands of years. View the salmon run from the banks of the Adams River at Tsútswecw Provincial Park. The Salute to the Sockeye takes place on the dominant year of the four-year cycle (2022, 2026). For more information visit ShuswapTourism.ca or SalmonSociety.com
Invasive mussels can hitchhike on any surface it comes in contact with. All water recreation equipment should be checked, including kayaks, paddleboards and fishing gear.
Shuswap Lake is shaped like an H, and is made up of four large arms: the Shuswap Lake Main Arm, Seymour Arm, Anstey Arm, and Salmon Arm. The lake is a result of ancient glacial scouring that also rounded the surrounding Shuswap Highlands. All four arms converge at Cinnemousun Narrows, northeast of Sicamous. Camping permits and fishing permits are required in advance.
