7 Distinct Regions AND
Far from ordinary and closer than you think, welcome here. The heart of the traditional territories of the Secwepemc, the meeting of the waters, the Shuswap is a place of gathering. We celebrate the pairing of meaningful experiences. Cycle to a vineyard or paint at the pub, paddle to the park or hike to the hot spring. We live to explore. And every day with us means you’ll find a little more.
It’s a place for families, where you can jump into warm waters from the deck of a houseboat or wander through the woods. A place where you can float down the river or bike down the pier where ice cream is in store. Comb the beach or drive a go-kart. Stay up late for the drive-in or get up early when the fish start.
It’s a place for flavour where you can taste great wines, spirits, craft ciders and beers, explore farmers’ fields and delight in a delicious meal. A place to revel in culture and community; art in the park, music by the shore or theatre under the stars.
It’s a place for adventure where you can change into your hiking shoes, biking shoes, snow shoes, or, bury your toes in the sand and do nothing more. Find hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing cycle of the salmon, and marvel at the beauty of it all.
It’s a place of wonder. From scintillating sunrises to spectacular stargazing, you’ll find experiences to soothe your soul, inspire ideas and mark memorable moments that will last a lifetime.

A floating cabin, a giant lake, a lifetime of adventure
Of all the wonderful ways to explore the region, houseboating shines as a true Shuswap experience. With warm lakes and hundreds of kms of shoreline to discover, taking to the water on a houseboat offers unparalleled freedom and variety.
Whether you’re looking for peaceful solitude, a family adventure, or time on the water with friends, a houseboat can be the perfect base for your holiday. In spring and fall, you might just feel like you’ve got a lake to yourself and the water’s still warm enough to jump in.
Houseboats come equipped with full kitchens, so you can stock up on groceries at a local farm stand and make home-cooked meals away from shore. For days when you want to leave the cooking to someone else, hire a caterer, visit a lakeside restaurant or head to a dock and walk to some of our best cafés, restaurants and pubs.
Pack a book or two to read on the deck and games to enjoy with family and friends. Take your mountain bike aboard so you can stop and explore our trails. Bring a kayak or SUP for self-propelled adventures and shoreline visits. Along the way, get to know our friendly communities, where great shopping, festive events and unique experiences are worth the trip ashore.

TASTE OUR UNIQUE FLAVOURS PLAN A DAY OR TWO!
Like so many Shuswap stories, our wines, beers, spirits and ciders express the spectacular landscape that surrounds us. Although the Shuswap can be considered the northern tip of the Okanagan wine-growing region, our climate is cooler and creates exceptional products. Each vineyard enjoys a unique microclimate, producing singular flavours that only develop right here.
The Shuswap’s wineries are family-run businesses that produce wines so fine they compete on par with international ones. Magnificent Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Rieslings, Siegerrebes, to name a few, that have all won national awards.
No matter what your preference, you will find some great authentic, locally grown and produced wines right here in the Shuswap. And the owners are happy to host you in their tasting rooms.
Take a day or two to indulge in stunning scenery and Shuswap wines, craft brews and cider. Be sure to check on opening times and tasting room hours at shuswaptourism.ca. Cheers!

GATHER ROUND FOR SOME SHUSWAP SOUND
AND LET THE MUSIC PLAY
Salmon Arm’s acclaimed Roots & Blues festival is a highlight of BC’s music scene. The Roots & Blues festival showcases some of the world’s best blues, world, folk, zydeco, alternative, funk, and reggae music, all in the welcoming, visually arresting setting of the Shuswap! For over 25 years, the festival has been a highlight of BC’s cultural calendar.
This incredibly popular outdoor music festival draws over 25,000 enthusiastic attendees and features musicians from Canada and around the world. The festival has become a prominent link on the national festival circuit and is considered among the top roots festivals in Canada.
The sounds are great, the atmosphere is incomparable, and there’s music and activities for all members of the family. Children 12 and under admitted free with adults.
In many ways, music is the heartbeat of our communities as we gather regularly for the small hall music crawl, rural coffee houses, symphony and choir performances, and music in the parks most every night in the summer. The talent and passion of our musicians and singers ensures we’ve always got our groove on. If music is your thing too, come visit and be sure to grab a selfie with what we think is the world’s largest (and most awesome) treble clef sculpture in downtown Salmon Arm.

SALUTE TO THE SOCKEYE FESTIVAL
SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 23, 2022
2023 FALL SALMON CELEBRATION
OCTOBER 6 - 9, THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
THE ADAMS RIVER SALMON RUN
The “Salute to the Sockeye” Festival will take place in the dominant year of the four-year cycle as the salmon return home to spawn in the Adams River. The next two “Salute to the Sockeye” Festivals will be in September/October 2022 and 2026.The Adams River sockeye salmon (sqleltenuwi) have held an important place in the lives of the Secwépemc (pronounced sehwep-muhc) people of the Shuswap Lakes and AdamsLake (Cstelen–hiss-tal-in) for thousands of years. Secwépemc ancestors tell many stories of the river being red with sockeye. The “Salute to the Sockeye” Festival is held in Tsútswecw Provincial Park to honour the return of the salmon and to create awareness about the Indigenous cultural values of the salmon. SALMON RUN ADAMS RIVER SOCKEYE
During October, the banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, host a natural miracle
Each fall, the quiet waters of the Adams River welcome Sockeye salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again, traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye salmon breeding areas in North America.
Various other species also return to the Adams River throughout the summer and fall. Watch for Pink, Chinook, and Coho salmon, as well as Rainbow trout and Steelhead trout. View the salmon and other species from the banks of the Adams River, in Tsútswecw Provincial Park, where you can also explore 26 km of trails offering other exceptional salmon viewing opportunities.
Sockeye salmon return to the Adams River every year, but in 2022 — the next dominant year
in the four-year migration cycle — hundreds of thousands of fish are expected to return home to spawn. This salmon run has helped to sustain the local Indigenous communities for thousands of years.
In the Fall of 2022, the Little Shuswap Band and the Adams River Salmon Society will host the “Salute to the Sockeye” Festival, held every four years, during the dominant salmon run, to celebrate the importance of the salmon to the history and culture of the local Secwépemc people and to the local environment.
The Adams River puts on an incredible show, but it’s not the only place to view spawning salmon during the Fall. Thousands of fish return to lakes and rivers throughout the Shuswap region. Watch for flashes of red as they head upstream!

BIRDS FLOCK TO OUR SHIMMERING LAKES, RICH WETLANDS AND LUSH FORESTS
In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap, some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young.
Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the walking on water dance of the Western Grebe. The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC and one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay.
Birding is a wonderful way to learn about the natural surroundings, too. Numerous tree species, wildflowers and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats. At the Salmon Arm Marine Park by the wharf, visit the award-winning Interpretive Centre operated by the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society.
The Bird Blind and Osprey Nest viewing trail is found on the west side of the boat launch in front of the Prestige Harbourfront Resort, and links into the west walkway. The east walkway from the Wharf parking lot will connect you to the Raven Trail, viewing platforms and Christmas Island.

CULINARY
Our favourite travel stories so often begin with the perfect pairing, the hole-in-the-wall café, farmers market magic or fruit stand finds. What’s less well-known? The off the beaten path foodie destinations that hide in plain sight, like those found right here in the Shuswap.
The terroir is nourished by the Shuswap Watershed, a network of rivers, streams and mountain lakelets that feed our name sake, Shuswap Lake, and along with the mild climate, it affords the region a variety of dairy, meat, fruit and produce that belies its compact size. Within two hours, you can visit wineries, distilleries, cideries, breweries, cheese makers, farms, orchards, community markets, amazing restaurants and food shops to fill your heart’s desire.
It might be news to you, but folks in these parts have known it for quite some time indeed.

FOOD IS A PART OF OUR CULTURE
YOU’LL BE HUNGRY FOR MORE
The lush lands of the Secwépemc Nation have long provided indigenous culture and settlers a bounty for which we are very grateful. Meet our farmers and producers, cheesemakers and brewmasters, merchants and grocers, vintners and chefs.
Get to know our locals and explore the taste trails of the Shuswap as they do; folksy exchanges at farmers markets, casual chats at coffee houses, catching up over local cheese and charcuterie, picnics at music in the park, mountain bike banter at the brew pub, BBQs on the beach, wine tastings after walks in the woods, après ski soups and sandwiches, down to earth discussions at the downtown diner, festival food truck feasts.
To take on the Shuswap Taste Trails, you need only pack light. Bring your spirit of adventure and your appetite. Walk, drive, boat or bike, there’s many a way to explore the feasts to savour here.
Food is knitted into our community conversations. Join us at the casual tables located throughout the Shuswap. Our hope is that you’ll leave fulfilled but hungry for more.
