“ I will use this fund to purchase books on worship and homiletics which I couldn’t buy on a student’s budget. Columbia is a blessing to me and my family.” “This award is an affirmation of my time and ministry while at Columbia, especially with my work among people experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. It also affirms my calling towards helping the community that I came from. I pray for your wellbeing as you continue to bless more students like me.” “Columbia Theological Seminary has been a blessing to me in so many ways.” “Receiving this award at the end of my remarkable time here at Columbia Seminary is a marvelous gift to receive, and an affirmation of my original decision to come here.”

Serving the Church and the world FA I T H F U L L Y, TOGETHER.

“The freedom from tuition worries has enabled me to study with peace of mind. And with that peace, I can go home to my family and care for them by being present.”

“As a father with children, every contribution helps with the cost of seminary. I look forward to my journey in ministry and opportunity to be a part of your historic support of preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary. Thank you so profoundly for being such a blessing to me personally.” “The resources provided to me through this award will be invaluable to me, both as I pursue further study and as I re-develop my relationship with the church and my personal spirituality in a life after seminary.” “This financial assistance will enable me to continue my theological education and continue to pursue sharing God’s love with those around me.” “As I move through the next year-and-a-half toward graduation, I am immensely thankful for all who have supported me and my family with love, prayer, and financial assistance as we discern this call to ministry.” “Thank you so much for enabling and encouraging students just like me.”

ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT 2019-2020

Faithfulness abounds! As we look back on the year behind us, and to the year ahead, qualities like adaptability, persistence, imagination, determination, professionalism, resourcefulness, and resilience describe the Columbia family responding together in this unforeseen and unprecedented era of pandemic. All these qualities tie back to faithfulness. Faithfulness abounds in our: • Donors who stood by Columbia with their giving that exceeded goals. • Alumni and congregations who, in making their own local adaptations, turned to Columbia for support and resources. • Trustees who were nimble in their leadership and unrelenting in care and dedication to their roles. • Students who endured immense pressures as their classes, community life, congregational and clinical internships, and even Commencement shifted under their feet. • Faculty who pivoted to all-online instruction in March that continues this fall. • Staff who moved quickly to remote working and embraced new tools and patterns for problem-solving and delivering on vital goals and objectives. • And even prospective students who answered the call of God on their lives and now comprise our largest incoming class in decades! All of this is in faithfulness to Columbia’s mission to educate and nurture faithful, imaginative, and effective leaders for the sake of the Church and the world. Welcome to our 2020 Annual Impact Report. It is a new approach to our traditional annual report, once folded into the fall Vantage Magazine. As you read it, you will see that the emphasis is on impact—the impact all of us in the Columbia family make together. You will see the impact of: • Donors giving faithfully, including Emily Wood who has given every year for 62 years. • Successful efforts to address serious financial challenges brought on by COVID-19. • Our continuing journey in examining Columbia’s history of entanglement in enslavement and racism from the publication of Dr. Erskine Clarke’s To Count Our Days, to our action in Repairing the Breach: Deepening Columbia’s Commitment to Black People and their Flourishing to the Becoming Project. • The promotion and installation of Dr. Ralph Watkins as a full professor in the chair of Peachtree Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth. • And our campus’s stewardship of God’s creation, resulting in the distinguished Green Seminary Certification. All of these milestones, and many more, mark the faithfulness that abounds at Columbia, because we pull together in response to God’s abundant providence. Thanks be to God! And also to you. Together in Christ, Rev. Dr. Jane E. Fahey Dr. Leanne Van Dyk Chair, Board of Trustees President

Your Support Prepares Tomorrow’s Leaders for God’s Changing World Faithfulness abounds through Columbia’s generous donors today as in ages past. In fiscal year 2019-2020, gifts and grants, along with proceeds from endowments given over our history, resulted in a combined donor impact of 79% of revenue. Beyond operating support, donors also made more than $1.4 million in new gifts to the endowment during the fiscal year. Together, donor support is vital not only to Columbia’s mission, but to its life! GIFTS • $544,912 • 3.8% GRANTS • $604,369 • 4.2% OTHER REVENUE • $921,350 • 6.5%

TUITION & FEES • $2,057,515 • 14.4% DENOMINATIONAL SUPPORT • $48,583 • 0.3% ENDOWMENT • $10,089,830 • 70.7%

The COVID-19 pandemic had significant financial impacts around the world, including at Columbia Seminary. In faithfulness to our mission, Columbia made essential adaptations that presented financial implications from decreased revenue to unanticipated expenses. ADMINISTRATIVE • $2,151,480 • 14.8% ADVANCEMENT • $1,053,292 • 7.3% ACADEMICS • $5,556,914 • 38.3%

While Columbia ended Fiscal Year 2020 in a rare deficit position, prudence, careful management, tactical investments and meticulous financial controls—combined with steadfast donor stewardship—resulted in minimizing the year’s deficit to 1.6%.

Columbia Seminary gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their support. This Annual Impact Report includes donors whose gifts or pledge payments were received July 1, 2019–June 30, 2020. Gifts received after July 1, 2020 will be acknowledged in next year’s report. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report. We apologize for any errors or omissions and ask that you bring them to our attention. Please report corrections to Jess Adams at 404-687-4590, or AdamsJ@ctsnet.edu.

The John Bulow Campbell Library at Columbia was one of the first seminary libraries to host the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History traveling exhibit, Exploring Human Origins: What Does it Mean to Be Human? As Dr. Bill Brown noted in the fall 2019 issue of Vantage, the exhibit helped him see how “compassion and imagination, resilience and cooperation are written into our DNA” because of our ancestors.

Mrs. Emily Wood, who celebrated her 100th birthday in 2020, began work in the Advancement Office of Columbia in 1958. When she retired in 1970, a scholarship was established in her name, and a lounge in Florida Hall was named for her. After retirement, she continued to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees and as the president of Columbia Friendship Circle. She says of her faithful giving, “The Seminary meant so much to me, and I want to help it mean as much to others in every generation. I encourage others to give. We must support our students to know of God’s grace and share it.”

“More than ever in these unprecedented times, Columbia Theological Seminary is being challenged to offer students and graduates a firm foundation from which to draw on their Christian formation and be the church in an ever-changing world. Dr. Brennan Breed’s discipleship through the ‘Office Hours’ virtual Bible Study is such a wonderful gift. This vital work deserves continuing support from us all.” Mrs. Kyle Ahrold, Alexandria, VA

Throughout the 2019 academic year, Columbia wrestled with its history and participation in the enslavement and oppression of Black people. In its June 2020 meeting via Zoom, the Board of Trustees voted to unanimously to affirm a commitment statement titled, “Repairing the Breach: Deepening Columbia’s Commitment to Black People and their Flourishing.” The statement can be found at ctsnet.edu/home/repairing-the-breach. Pictured: Dr. Marcia Y. Riggs, J. Erskine Love Professor of Christian Ethics and seminary Ombudsperson; and Dr. Mitzi J. Smith, J. Davison Philips Professor of New Testament. Upon Mrs. Jane Yount’s passing last year, Columbia received a trust distribution of $500,000. Trustee Richard DuBose recalls discussing estate giving with Tom Yount years ago. He remembers, “Tom and Jane appreciated pastors who were good preachers, teachers, and pastoral care providers, but who also had a knack for managing complex organizations like their church. They supported Columbia because they believed in the importance of strong leadership and the necessity of good preparation for ministry.”

The CFC, made up of Presbyterian Women from the Synods of Living Waters and South Atlantic, has faithfully supported students and faculty of Columbia through pooled financial donations for 71 years. To date, they have given over one million dollars. Currently their mission is to support both Presbyterian students with family obligations and the student food pantry. † Raised to the Church Triumphant

Planned giving is not as complicated as you’ve heard. Here are three easy ways you can make a lasting impact on generations to come at Columbia:

1. Name Columbia in your life insurance policy or retirement plan

Outside of probate, the easiest way to support Columbia’s future work is to name it as a beneficiary or contingent beneficiary in an insurance policy or retirement plan. Columbia’s tax ID number is 58-0566165.

2. Name Columbia as a POD recipient for your banking or brokerage account

An often overlooked opportunity to support future charitable work is naming Columbia as a “payable-on-death” recipient. Any banking officer can help you complete a new recipient card. For brokerage accounts, the term is “transfer-on-death.” Both typically avoid probate.

3. Include Columbia in your will

Your will is a chance to make a statement about what you value in life. To make a sustaining gift to Columbia through a will or codicil, ask your attorney to include simple language such as: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Columbia Theological Seminary, 701 S. Columbia Dr., Decatur, GA 30030, for its general purposes (or state a specific purpose), all (or state a percentage or specific dollar amount) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal.”

People who support Columbia’s mission naturally value its continuation beyond their lifetimes. If you have already included Columbia in your estate plans, please notify us so that your generosity can be recognized through the Richards Society and to ensure your intent is forever honored. Please contact VP for Advancement David Huffine at 404-687-4568, HuffineD@CTSnet.edu, or visit our website at www.ctsnet.edu/connect/giving-to-columbia/ for information about making a planned gift. www.ctsnet.edu
