Several major Kootenay ski resorts and CBT mandate vaccinations for employees

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Several of the largest private and non-government employers in the Columbia Valley and across the Kootenay region have mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for their employees in recent weeks.

On Thursday, Oct. 21, the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) announced it was implementing a proof of vaccination policy for staff and board members, saying they needed to be fully vaccinated by the end of November.

“It is critically important we remain vigilant in our efforts to support a safe and healthy workplace,” said CBT president and chief executive officer, Johnny Strilaeff, in a press release. “The decision to implement a proof of vaccination policy was made after careful consideration of a range of issues, including workplace health and safety as well as legally protected rights under human rights laws.”

The CBT added that it is looking at expanding the policy to include contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders who it deals with “on a face-to-face basis.” Proof of vaccination is not needed to visit CBT offices across the Kootenay, but other COVID-19 protocols are in place there.

The CBT mandate follows similar moves earlier this month by several large Kootenay employers, notably some of the area’s famous ski resorts, as they gear up for the upcoming winter season.

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR), which includes several large ski resorts in the Kootenay region (although neither of the Columbia Valley’s ski resorts), announced on Oct. 15 that its employees would need to be vaccinated in order to work. Employees already hired by RCR had until the end of October to show proof of the first shot, and until early December to show proof of the second shot. New hires after Oct. 15 had to be fully vaccinated to be hired.

RCR’s three major resorts in the East Kootenay collectively employ 1,275 people, making it the seventh larger employer in the region, according to Kootenay Business’s list of top Kootenay employers.

Here in the Columbia Valley, Panorama Mountain Resort announced a similar policy for its employees on Monday, Oct. 25.

“Protecting the health and safety of our community

and guests has always been our top priority. Since day one of this pandemic, we’ve rigorously upheld federal and provincial public health orders, and closely followed all guidelines and industry best practices. Like leading resort destinations across the country, we’ve implemented a vaccination policy for all employees. Our people need to know that their workplace is as safe as it can possibly be. Our guests want to know that we’ve taken as many precautions as we can to ensure the best possible vacation experience,” said Panorama president and chief executive officer, Steve Paccagnan, in a statement to the Pioneer.

Earlier in the fall Fairmont Hot Springs Resort had announced that “to ensure consistency resort-wide and across all guest and visitor touchpoints, overnight guests of the resort, RV resort, Spruce Grove campground and Mountainside Villas along with team members, pool and gym membership holders, ski pass holders, golf members, indoor and outdoor dining patrons and day users of the ski area, natural springs spa, retail shops and golf courses will be required to show proof of vaccination.”

Panorama and CMH each have a staff of roughly 500 people, making them the 13th and 14th largest employers in the Kootenay. More than 200 people work at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort during its peak season, making it the 39th largest Kootenay employer.

The largest employer of any kind in the Kootenay is Interior Health, with a staff of 5,300 across the region. The provincial government had announced a vaccine mandate for all B.C. health care workers back in September, which was slated to come into effect by the end of October.

Teck Coal Ltd., is the largest private employer (and second largest employer overall) in the Kootenay, with some 4,000 employees, and has not announced a vaccine mandate affecting workers at any of the massive mines it operates in the East Kootenay. The company did, however, announce on Monday, Oct. 4, that all employees working at its corporate offices in Vancouver, Richmond, Calgary, Toronto, and Spokane would need to be fully vaccinated by mid-November. RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, Oct. 18 through Oct. 24, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 101 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, Oct. 18, a resident on Hewitt Road in Edgewater reported a Champion generator was stolen from his property sometime overnight. On Saturday, Oct. 23, the generator was located on a property in Edgewater and returned to the rightful owner. The investigation is ongoing.

• On Tuesday, Oct. 19, at about 8:40 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols in Fairmont Hot Springs and stopped a BMW 335XI for speeding. While speaking to the driver, the officer formed suspicion that the driver was operating the vehicle with alcohol in her body and read a roadside breath demand. The driver complied with

the demand and blew a fail. As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition, and her vehicle was impounded for 30-days.

• On Thursday, Oct. 21, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a suspicious red van in Spur Valley which had departed northbound on Highway 95. The investigating officer followed up with the registered owner, who discovered that the van, stored in Invermere, was missing and presumed stolen. The van was found abandoned in Golden later the same day. The investigation is ongoing.

• On Saturday, Oct. 23, at about 5 p.m., emergency crews responded to a two vehicle collision at the roundabout in Radium Hot Springs. A commercial transport truck, while in the roundabout, had struck a Honda CRV. The driver of the commercial transport truck was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn.

No injuries were reported, but the Honda CRV had to be towed from the scene.

Upgrade update: infrastructure projects press ahead Mayor remain optimistic 13th Avenue to be paved soon

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Work on two major infrastructure projects in Invermere is proceeding quickly, and if the weather holds, both should remain on schedule.

On both projects — sewer and other infrastructure upgrades on 13th Avenue, and the latest phase in downtown revitalization efforts on 7th Avenue — contractors are working as hard as they can, Invermere mayor, Al Miller, told the Pioneer.

The downtown revitalization has so far gone

without any hitches, but the work on 13th Avenue was more complex than originally thought, noted Miller.

“They’re doing very well. I believe they (the contractors working on 13th Avenue) are still hoping to be paving soon. It’s getting near the end of the month now, but that was their goal, to be paving in October,” he said. “At this point, it may, to a certain extent, come down to weather.”

Miller explained that most of downtown revitalization work should be done this fall, although some of it may need to be finished up in the spring.

Bears still getting into garbage bins

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Bears are still out and about in Columbia Valley communities, getting into garbage and chicken coops, although not quite as badly as they were a few weeks ago.

In late September and October, the Pioneer was flooded with residents’ reports of bears in Invermere, Radium, Wilmer and Windermere, and conservation officers reported that five bears had died in the span of a week: three killed after being hit by vehicles on local highways, and two which had to be put down by the officers after becoming too habituated to humans, and consequently posing a safety risk.

The sheer number of bear incidents has been trending downward in recent weeks, but local conservation officer Matt Hall explained to the Pioneer that there are still plenty of them about in the Columbia Valley.

“This year, we’ve had quite a few bears getting into chicken coops, and we continue to have that,” Hall told the Pioneer.

“Normally, we do see bears leave the valley sometime in early or mid-November, as they starting thinking about finding beds for the winter. But this year, for whatever reason, we are getting close to that time, and there are still a lot of bears around.

Yes, the numbers are down from a few weeks ago, but there is still plenty of activity, and the bears are still getting into stuff in towns.”

The principal attractants in the past few weeks are the same ones as earlier this fall: fruit trees loaded with ripe and overripe fruit, chicken coops and unsecured garbage bins.

The new district of Invermere garbage bins “have been a bit of headache,” conceded Hall. “A lot of people seem to think they are bear proof. That plastic locking device seems to fool people. They will not stop a bear, and these bins are not bear proof. Unfortunately, people don’t realize that, and a lot of people are leaving their

bins out well before the recommended hour or two before pickup time, on pickup day. Some are even leaving them out overnight.”

The mother and cubs that had been seen frequently in Radium earlier this fall have apparently moved on, and have not been spotted in awhile, said Hall, but in the week before speaking with the Pioneer, Hall had been forced to put down a bear in the Wilder subdivision and another in Wilmer. Both bears had repeatedly come into populated areas and had become too comfortable with close proximity to humans. The Wilmer bear had been getting into chicken coops in that community.

“It was a safety issue,” said Hall, of the Wilmer bear. “It was getting a lot of coops. It would be much less of an issue if everybody who has a chicken coop had electric fencing. Electric fencing doesn’t need to be super expensive. There are, in fact, an impressive number of affordable options out there. The bears, they are trying to pack on the calories before winter, and chicken coops are very easy for bears to find — there’s a lot of smell and a lot of noise — and without electric fencing, they are very easy for bears to get into.”

Hall agreed with fellow conservation officer Greg Kruger’s observation that there are more bears out this fall than has typically been the case in the past few years.

“We haven’t been this busy at this time of year for awhile, a number of years, in fact,” said Hall, adding it’s hard to say for sure what’s driving that trend. “It may just be the natural ebb and flow of the valley population.”

Hall implored valley residents and visitors to be mindful about reducing bear attractants.

“The bears are certainly still there, and it is certainly still a problem. People need to remain vigilant,” he said.

Fresh old ideas

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist Canada has now concluded its 44th election for a cost of six hundred million dollars, and, as a result, this country has been turned around 360 degrees. In the aftermath, many will ponder what has happened, and some will ask, “All of that, for this?”

The cost is actually much more than six hundred million dollars. Many citizens have donated to their preferred party, and that money is now spend. There will be an abundance of requests to re-fill those coffers.

Worrisome for me is the chatter on radio talk-back programs requesting a change to our voting system.

Worse is that too many are dreaming of a better world by advocating proportional representation (PR).

If the opinion of those who advocate PR with the hope for greater political tranquillity, then they need to examine how PR is practised around the world. While there are some examples of smooth governance with PR, that is not the common result.

PR has two negatives. First, it leads, everywhere, to an expansion of political parties. Groups who have a cause form an issue-based party while trying to gain enough votes to elect some seats to a legislative body.

Secondly, because majority governments are rare, the larger party’s needs to negotiate with smaller parties to obtain power. The result is, those parties with lower voter popularity end up with exaggerated persuasion. It almost never happens that the party with the largest number of seats co-operates with the party with the second largest success. The runner-up-party is looked upon as a political competitor.

Germany just concluded an election that ended with no party having a majority. It will be several months before a new chancellor will be named. Of course, Angela Merkel continues as Chancellor until a new one takes office. What is to happen to a country should a serious crisis develop before a new leader is determined? Can the out-going Chancellor govern with the same authority while a new administration is waiting to be formed?

In the past, in Israel, when a new government could not consolidate a governing coalition, another election was required. In short, it is a country without leadership waiting with hope that nothing earth shattering will take place until an enduring electoral process concludes. That is a vulnerable period because of a leadership vacuum.

A government is the nation’s manager. Not one private sector corporation would ever select a policy board

that was constructed with a multitude of opposing views.

Good management shoots with a rifle, not a scatter gun.

So, forget about what proportional representation did to Italy with its 163 political parties. Italy is an abnormality. Consider Europe, where in seven countries the smallest number of parties is seven and the largest number is thirty-five. Surely, a larger number of political parties does not lead to faster or more precise decision making. What is advantageous are political parties that have big tents where a wide range of views are accepted within.

Finally, Canada is such a favoured country. I can’t think of another place where I would prefer to live. So, if our present system has provided this level of security

and comfort, what is all of this chatter about hunting for some new political electoral system? If we experiment with proportional representation to see if we might like it, consider what a gaggle of political parties would do if the public didn’t like the new procedure. There is no chance that those numerous smaller parties will give up their influence to revert back to our current system. With PR, a country is stuck. Try and change, and the tail will wag the dog. The fringe controls the power.

“Keep it outside”: B.C. PHO offers tips for celebrating Halloween

By Camille Aubin camille@columbiavalleypioneer.com As Halloween approaches, health officials in B.C. want are remind everyone to keep Halloween celebrations small, noting the pandemic is still ongoing.

According to Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, the new and inventive socially distanced ways people used to hand out Halloween treats last year, like candy chutes, should be considered again as COVID-19 continues to spread across the province.

“A lot of the creative things that we saw last year are good things for us to consider this year, as well, for a number of reasons, one is we still have transmission.

We know that this virus is transmitting in communities around the province and the new strain that we’re seeing can transmit more effectively,” Henry said during a press conference. “We still do not have a vaccine for young children, particularly that age group that enjoys going out in trick-or-treating. So this year, as well, think: keep it outside. Keep it small.”

For a safe Halloween, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control offers the same guidelines as last year: Avoid trick-or-treating indoors or in busy areas; leave space between you and other people to avoid crowding; wash your hands before going out, upon getting home, and before eating treats; and keep hand sanitizer readily available.

Residents giving out candy should be advised to use tongs and a baking sheet, or make a “candy slide”; hand out individual treats instead of offering a shared bowl; only hand out sealed, pre-packaged treats; wear a non-medical mask when handing out treats; be more outside than inside, or at least stand outside when handing out treats, so that kids don’t need to touch doors or doorbells; and be sure to constantly clean handrails, doorbells, and knobs.

Don’t forget to wear bright colors. If your little one is dressed in a dark costume this Halloween, say as Batman, for instance, add reflective tape, buttons, or lights to the costume. Also, check the treats first and be wary of unsealed or damaged wrappers. If in doubt, throw it out.

And don’t forget to have fun.

Invermere to host Monsters Mash scavenger hunt CHILDREN/YOUTH’S GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT GROUP Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley is offering a NEW Children/Youth Support Group Using the Rainbows International Program model the course is designed to provide support to young people as they navigate grief and heal from loss, whether from death, divorce/separation, move, or other challenges. rainbows.org The free 12-week program will cover topics such as understanding feelings, exploring the ‘why my family’ questions, developing positive coping skills, and helping others.

Spooky sleuths and dressed-up detectives who manage to pinpoint at least 10 monsters will be entered into a draw to win one of three $50 gift certificates from participating businesses. If you can track down 20 of those tricky hidden monsters, you’ll be entered twice into the draw. Another way to boost your chance of winning is to take a photo while you’re out monster hunting and then post them on social media under the tag #InvermereBcEvents.

In support of Small Business Month, the Aspire team has shared their responses to the top 5 common questions asked from new entrepreneurs. Check them out below!

1. Should I incorporate my business?

The answer: maybe. This answer is unique to each client. Incorporation adds complexity, cost, and administrative burden to a business. The incremental costs of being incorporated, compared to operating on a self-employed basis, can total several thousand dollars per year. This can be a complicated decision best made by seeking advice from legal and tax professionals to understand how the costs stack up against the benefits for each unique situation.

2. Can I incorporate a company online myself?

Yes, you can. You should be aware that ‘self-incorporation’ may cause legal and tax issues and hinder tax planning opportunities in the future. This can cost clients more than if they had hired a professional in the first place.

3. Should I be charging GST? A business should never charge GST to a customer unless the business has registered to collect it. If you have been issued a 9-digit business number, this does not necessarily mean you are registered to collect sales tax; registration to collect tax is a separate application. A registered GST number ends in “RT0001” and must be included on your invoices/receipts to your customers. Businesses are required to register for GST when revenue over four calendar quarters exceeds $30,000, however registering voluntarily

before that threshold could have advantages for some businesses.

4. Do GST and PST work the same way?

GST and PST remittances work very differently.

The GST system allows businesses to offset collected GST from customers with the GST paid on purchases. The difference of the two amounts is submitted to CRA. In periods of high expenditures, businesses could actually receive a GST refund.

The PST system requires businesses to submit collected PST but does not allow you to deduct the PST paid. When you purchase items for your manufacturing process or inventory for resale, you can provide your supplier with your PST number to purchase these items PST exempt.

5. Can I combine personal and business funds?

Even if you are not incorporated, we recommend establishing separate business and personal banking and credit card accounts. This simplifies your books considerably (reduces bookkeeping/accounting fees) and reduces your risk of CRA complications.

Recycle BC is a not-for-profit organization responsible for residential packaging and paper product recycling throughout British Columbia. Recycle BC Depots (located at the Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford Transfer Stations) offer the greatest opportunity for keeping products out of the trash.

Cranbrook & Kimberley Curbside

The Cranbrook and Kimberley curbside programs are a part of the Recycle BC program however, due to the nature of the collection not all products can be placed in the blue curbside bins. To minimize your household waste, you’ll want to set aside your plastic bags, flexible packaging, glass and styrofoam and make a quick trip to a transfer station every so often.

Buns and borscht, ladybugs and love

Family and friends remember giving spirit of longtime volunteer, super seamstress, baker extraordinaire and sharp shooting bowler

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Longtime valley resident Anna Engdahl passed away earlier this year, but reminders of her spirit of self-sacrifice and giving will remain in the Columbia Valley for a long time to come.

Indeed the October scarecrow competition in Invermere gave Anna’s youngest daughter, Gloria MacLean, just such a reminder earlier this month. As Gloria drove through town, she spotted a scarecrow wearing a familiar piece of clothing: the white and red dress Anna had made for Gloria to wear as a junior attendant in her oldest sister Angie’s wedding back in 1974.

The sisters had come upon the dress, tucked away, while going through their mother’s belongings, and had donated it to the Thrift Store. And thereafter, somebody had clearly purchased it at the Thrift store for use on the scarecrow.

“It has made me realize that Mom is still around us, everywhere,” Gloria told the Pioneer.

Anna was a wizard when it came to creating things from scratch: dresses and drapes, borscht and buns, you name it, she could whip it up. Call it natural talent or the inborn ability of someone who grew up in the Hungry Thirties, when making ends meet and then making Anna Engdahl them stretch a little further was just a fact of life. Wherever the quality came from, Anna had it in spades.

Born outside the beautiful old city of Krakow, in Poland, in 1927, Anna moved to Saskatchewan with her parents and siblings when she was just one year old. In Saskatchewan, she met and married her husband, Harold. In 1956, the couple moved with their five kids to the Columbia Valley, where they welcomed three more kids. They lived initially in a 10 foot-by 20 foot (three metre-by-six metre) one-room house in Wilmer, then Invermere, then the K2 Ranch, and then finally in 1959, into their own four-room house in Windermere; the same house in which Anna would happily live for the next 60 years.

As Gloria and Angie told the Pioneer, it was a full house — full of people, full of laughter, full of love.

“Of the eight kids, there were five girls, and we slept in two rooms. You were never alone in that small house,

but it meant we all learned how to compromise and get along,” said Angie. “It taught us how to share. Initially, there was no indoor plumbing in the house, but when I was 16, we got a bathroom. And of course, somehow us five girls always ended up in the bathroom together at the same time. One at the mirror, one at the sink, one in the shower...It made us close, and even to this day, the five of us do a sisters get-away holiday once a year.”

Their dad Harold had an iron will, but “with mom, you could get around her. She was just too nice,” recalled Gloria, laughing at the memory.

Angie explained that Anna’s reputation in the valley as a master seamstress began when she made a wedding dress for a local family just six months after arriving in the valley. Word spread fast, and soon Anna was stitching wedding gowns, graduation dresses, pants, shirts, and more.

“She was self taught, and she loved it. It literally took us days to clear out her sewing room after she passed,” said Angie.

“Growing up, I had such a fabulous wardrobe, thanks to her.”

“I remember the time when I was a kid, going to Windermere Elementary School, I outgrew my favourite dress that she had made me. I was just so sad, because I loved that dress so much,” added Gloria.

That kind of resourcefulness of character saw Anna manage Submitted photo eight kids and 14 pregnancies with grace and happinesses. As if that wasn’t enough, she was always helping out neighbours and friends, and volunteering.

Aside from her skills with needle and thread, Anna was famous in the valley for her prowess in the kitchen.

In fact, she was making her own pickles, syrups, jams and jellies right up to summer 2020. On occasion, her Polish heritage was reflected in her cooking: excellent borscht, mouthwatering cabbage rolls, a special kind of Christmas bread, and, of course, her famous pirogies.

“Those homemade pirogies were fantastic. If you knew she was making them, you’d skip lunch, just to make sure you had room for as many as possible. And there’d be Saskatoon berry perogies for dessert,” said Gloria, adding that Anna’s homemade sandwiches were so famous in the schoolyard that one of her brothers made a tidy profit by selling off his lunch.

New webinar series: Indigenous Water Relations within the Columbia Basin

By Haley Grinder Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Living Lakes Canada is hosting a new webinar series to learn, share, and understand the traditional relationship that Indigenous Peoples have with and for water.

The webinar, titled Indigenous Water Relations within the Columbia Basin, aims to recognize and appreciate the Indigenous Peoples’ Place-Based cultural practices, as well as the responsibility felt towards water.

The three-series webinars will be held via Zoom, led by two presenters from each of the three Indigenous Peoples. Ktunaxa will lead the first on Oct. 26, followed by Secwepmec on Nov. 2 and concluded by Sylis-Okanagan/Sinixt on Nov. 9. For those unable to attend, recordings will be available afterwards on the Living Lakes Canada website.

New MNBC Culture and Language Institute

By Haley Grinder Local Journalism Initiative Reporter There is talk of the implementation of a new Metis Nation of British Columbia (MNBC) Culture and Language Institute.

Three information gathering sessions were hosted by MNBC’s Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language.

The community engagement sessions occurred on Sept. 27, Oct. 4, and Oct. 5 via Zoom to discuss the potential of the Institute, as well as what members would like the vision and focus to be. A total of 54 community members across the province participated in the sessions, voting on a variety of ideas and options at hand. Ted Silberberg of Lord Cultural Resources facilitated the voting process.

The results yielded showed that 81 per cent of participants believed the Institute should be made a priority for MNBC. The majority (48 per cent) also said that, should the Institute be made a reality, the focus should be on creating “a place for Métis culture and language education programs (both online and offline),” but

should have “no exhibitions at the headquarters itself.”

Respondents were also asked about what their priority would be surrounding Métis-focused culture and language programs. In which, the top three answers were “artisan classes (moccasins, beading, and finger weaving), language circles and courses (all ages), and land-based language immersion classes.”

The implementation of MNBC Culture and Language Institute would have a Métis museum open to the public, with the option of smaller, travelling exhibitions and programs to Métis Chartered Communities. According to 63 percent of participants, that is “extremely important.”

Avery Cole, Coordinator of the MNBC Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language, said, “Lord Cultural Resources found the engagements very insightful and will be taking your feedback into account as they develop recommendations for the Métis Culture and Language Institute business plan.”

Road closures to help wildlife populations bounce back

By Haley Grinder Local Journalism Initiatives Reporter This past summer has seen extreme damage to wildlife populations and their habitats in the Kootenays and areas of the Thompson Okanagan. To combat this, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development has enacted 15 motor vehicle closures under the Motor Vehicle Prohibition Regulation of the Wildlife Act. Just over 530,000 hectares will be affected across backcountry roads, although access for community residents, private property, and commercial activities (apart from hunting) will not be restricted. The boundaries were made using natural landmarks of rivers and streams, as well as certain roads.

The closures are in place due to “wildfire impact to habitats that need time to

recover erosion of charred soils and impacts to fish habitat, increased vulnerability of wildlife due to migration disruptions, habitat loss and improved sightlines for hunting where vegetation was burned, [and] increased access to wildlife habitat due to the construction of approximately 2,900 kilometers of fire guards,” shares Nigel McInnis, media relations for the Ministry Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development in a press release.

The wildlife damage was also worsened by the heightened level of traffic, with the Highway 1 reroute through Radium Hot Springs after a COVID-19-inspired hiatus and the reopening of provincial borders.

They won their first game against Golden 10-5, with Kaydn Chasse (3), Cameron Charette (2), Spencer Goldsmith, Brayden Roe, Jack Mcaffer (2), Hunter Wood scoring the goals. The game was close 6-5 at the end of the second, but the locals decided they had had enough and scored four unanswered goals in the third period. Chase Kinsey, Jack Andruschuk, Spencer, Cameron, Keegan Kelly, Braydon all assisted on the various goals. In the second game, Windermere Valley was on the losing end to Elk Valley 10-1, with Ethan Spence scoring the lone goal.

Again facing Elk Valley, the locals played a much stronger game in the final, losing the final 8-5. Ethan scored 3, with Braydon and Cameron each scoring 1. The game was 5-4 midway through the third period, but Elk Valley pulled ahead.

The U13 Rep team (PeeWee) travelled to Salmon Arm, where they fought hard in each game, making the final but falling short of winning. The first game Friday was against West Kelowna. The local team was behind 3-1 at the end of the second period but stormed back in the third period, winning 6-3. The second game was against

Penticton (a tier 3 team), and the locals won 6-1, with both goalies being strong throughout the tournament.

Later on Saturday, they played Winfield, losing that game 2-0. The two wins put them in the semi-final against the local team, Salmon Arm. Again, they were behind 4-2 after the first period, but came back to tie it after second periods 4-4.

Brayden Rice, an added player to the team, scored his first goal for the Rep team. In the third period, the Windermere Valley team scored three more goals to win 7-4, putting them in the finals on Sunday afternoon. In the Final Game against South Okanagan, the team ran out of steam and lost to South Okanagan 9-3.

ROCKIES IN FIRST PLACE Submitted The Columbia Valley Rockies played the Division-leading Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Friday night. After the first period, the Rockies were down 1-0, but goals in the second by Cole Brock and Jakob McLean on a power play had them leading 2-1 after the second period. Then early in the third period, Beaver Valley tied it up. When in this back and forth penalty ridden game, Cole Brock scored for a second time to put the Rockies ahead again. With less than five minutes to go, Beaver Valley tied it 3-3. At 4:33 in OT, Kayde Kinaschuk scored the winning goal. The Rockies win 4-3 and get the valued 2 points in a road game.

COLUMBIA LAKE MANAGEMENT PLAN

On Saturday night, the Rockies played the Grand Forks Bruins in Grand Forks. Again, the Rockies got off to a slow start, being behind after the first period, 1-0. Both teams scored in the second period, with Dylan Malarchuk scoring on a power play for the Rockies. The score at the end of the second was 2-1 for the Bruins.

Then in the third period, the Rockies came alive, scoring five goals. Tyson Tisdale scored in the first minute, and then Kayde Kinaschuk scored in the second minute. Right after that, Jonah Fournier scored in the third minute, putting the Rockies ahead 4-2. Vaugh Strutt and Kyle Shoemaker finished the scoring for the Rockies with the final scored Rockies 6-Bruins 3. The Rockies had 57 shots on goal. The Rockies now lead the Eddie Mountain Division by 3 points.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Aunty Shirley on October 10, 2021. Mom passed away peacefully on a quiet Sunday evening at Columbia House in Invermere with her daughters near her side, at the age of 91 years.

Shirley was born in Miami, Manitoba on February 4, 1930, to Clayton and Katarina Eby, and was the eldest of five children.

She grew up on the farm and began school in the one room schoolhouse in Tobacco Creek, Manitoba where her dad would take the children to school by horse and sleigh in the winter.

In 1941 the family bought a farm North of Carman, Manitoba, and Shirley continued her schooling at the school in Carman.

Mom had many fond memories of her life on the farm with her parents, sisters, and brothers. After completing high school, Shirley apprenticed as an optician with optometrist Dr. Chochran in Carman. She often talked so fondly of her job assisting Dr. Chochran with his many patients as he travelled to various communities in the Carman area. While attending high school, mom met Charles Vernon “Corky” Steeves, and it wasn’t long until Corky was working on the Eby farm during the summers, helping with the harvest which was all done by hand. In June of 1949 Shirley and Corky were married. Dad was hired to help build the transmission lines for the new Alcan plant in Kitimat, B.C., so they moved to Kitimat and lived in a work camp made of holiday trailers, along with many other young couples.

Their daughter Katherine was born in Winnipeg, and daughter Candice was born in Vancouver. Mom and Dad’s adventures and Dad’s career took them many places: Kitimat, Winnipeg, Vancouver, McBride, Terrace, Smithers, Vanderhoof, and finally to Invermere. Mom and Dad loved company, friends, and family, and we have many happy memories of family and friends visiting and staying in our home. Mom loved music. She was a wonderful pianist, knitter, seamstress, and spotless homemaker, and our home was always filled with old time music, country music, and hymns. In Invermere mom was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lady Lions and had many fun times with all her sisters and friends in both organizations.

Mom was an amazing Grandma and Great Grandma and loved all her grandchildren. She and Dad would take them camping and fishing, and mom knitted them sweaters, toques, mittens, and scarves, and always had candies waiting for them in the candy dish. Mom and Dad also loved all their nieces and nephews, and always had so much fun spending time with all who visited their home. They also hosted many of Katherine and Candice’s friends and treated them like their own children.

In 2006 Shirley suffered a severe stroke which brought extreme challenges for her, but true to her nature she fought hard to overcome them all so she could be with us for many more years, and attend many more birthdays, graduations, weddings, births, and christenings, and get to know all her great-grandchildren.

In her later years, Mom enjoyed many visits from her loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and loved the fun outdoor picnics with her daughters, nieces, and sons-in-law.

Shirley leaves behind her loving daughters Katherine (Donald) Harrington, Candice (Peter) Thompson, grandchildren Kevin (Tennille) Thompson, Nathan (Amy) Harrington, Trevor (Colleen) Harrington, Melissa [Wes (deceased)] Duckett, and great-grandchildren James Usunier, Anthony Thompson, Teaya Usunier, Hudson Harrington, Brielle Harrington, Adelyn Harrington, Elizabeth Thompson, Kip Duckett, and Asher Harrington. Shirley also leaves behind her sister Ellen McEachern of Carman, Manitoba, brother Alvin (Barbara) Eby of Wabigoon, Ontario, brother-in-law John Murray of Carman, Manitoba, and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

Shirley was pre-deceased by her parents, Clayton, and Katarina (Dyck) Eby, husband Charles Vernon (Corky) Steeves, sister Madeliene Murray, son-in-law Wes Duckett, and brother Lyle Eby. Thank you so very much to Dr. Brown, and the nurses at Columbia House for their kind and compassionate care of Mom. A gathering of close family to honour Shirley will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made to the Columbia House Healing Garden in Invermere, B.C. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services.

Terry was born on May 4, 1958, to Lawrence “Jack” Stevens and Elizabeth Agnes Nicholas. On October 25, 1984, he married Patricia Teneese, they had 4 beautiful children, Stephen, Clayton, Ryan, and Elizabeth. Terry loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all. He also had a love for baseball.

The air is crisp, the mountains dusted and the leaves are tumbling: fall is here. The time of year where cooler temperatures lead us to cozy up next to the woodstove with a cuppa, a good library book, and perhaps a happy light? Read on for details and see what else is on at the library.

Happy Lights: We have three LED Light Therapy Lamps available to borrow with your library card. These lights mimic the effects sunlight has on the body like balancing hormones and resetting the body’s internal clock.

The full spectrum light can lift spirits, sharpen concentration and improve energy levels. Have it on while you read for an hour and see if you notice a boost in your mood!

What does it mean to be “lukewarm?” A comical scene from a popular Christian movie depicts an old, faithful saint serving a young, passionless woman a room temperature cup of coffee (to her great surprise), exclaiming, “Jesus doesn’t want lukewarm Christians!” While this is often used as an attempt to motivate people to be “on fire for God,” some historical context allows us to understand something more profound about Jesus’ warning against being lukewarm. After Jesus rose from the dead, he met one of his close friends to offer some final promises and warnings to his people. To one church group, he says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot!

So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation

3:15-16).

There are some keys to understanding this passage.

First, it is helpful to note that Jesus speaks of having something in his mouth, explaining that he desires the church to either be cold or hot. Second, a key piece of information comes from the landscape of Laodicea, the city of the church group in question. Laodicea—much like the Columbia Valley—had both icy cold bodies of water and hot springs nearby. Each type of water—hot and cold—serves a helpful purpose. However, if one attempted to pipe the water into the city, both types would become lukewarm, thus losing their edge and their purpose.

Therein lies the issue: not that the church had “cooled off,” but that the church had lost its purpose. In terms of a drink, they were neither hot tea nor iced tea… they were lukewarm. So, what does it mean to be lukewarm?

It means to lose distinction, to lose focus. I believe this continues to be a risk for churches. Many Christians fear being “too extreme,” so they avoid becoming focused or overly different from the surrounding culture. It would appear, though, that Jesus isn’t looking for people who fit in… he’s looking for people who follow him.

Pests and diseases - Part 1 Branching Out

It is important to understand that most tree pests and diseases are a secondary symptom of an underlying primary problem. Tree stress factors can contribute to many problems or complexes, rather than a single issue. Therefore, the professional diagnostic process can be challenging and involve proper tree identification, what abnormalities affect this tree type, site history, environmental stress, looking for patterns to the symptoms, and taking into consideration the client’s needs and expectations!

Diseases, in particular, can be difficult to diagnose and are often confused with other plant problems. In fact, if a primary stress factor is not readily identified, diseases are incorrectly assumed to be the existing problem. Pests are also easy to assume they are the primary problem, as we can see them causing damage to leaf tissues, bark and trunk flares, visible exit holes, webbing tents or structures on twigs or branches.

One fungal pathogen that is very prominent in the valley is Spruce Broom Rust (SBR). It is a common abnormality of Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce and Interior Douglas Firs. It is often associated with stem deformations, called Witches Brooms. Distinguishing features of SBR are complete loss of needles in the winter and the yellow-orange colour of the broom in spring and summer. (See Photo 1:1 and 1:2).

Another tree pest abnormality in Invermere has been the White Pine Weevil (WPW). This beetle-like weevil has been a common problem in the Castlerock and Westside Park areas and has been mostly associated with spruce trees, predominantly Colorado Blue spruces.

Adult female Weevils overwinter in garden mulch or forest litter, and, in early spring, they emerge and climb up the trunk of host trees up to the terminal shoot, deposit eggs in cavities in the bark. Eggs hatch within 10 days, and larvae burrow into the bark and feed on the inner bark. This results in the loss of the previous and current years’ terminal shoots. Presence of the insect is easily detected in late June by the condition of the terminal shoot or leader. i.e., wilted, orange shepherd’s crook. Control for both of these common evergreen tree problems can be solved by pruning out the obvious deformed growths created by each of these pathogens. As with SBR, it is recommended that you disinfect pruning tools after each cut of infected twigs or branches. I use household Lysol spray as it does not pit steel blades.

As for WPW, it is important to cut terminal shoots or leaders below the dead tip far enough down to new growth and look for larval tunnels, or pupal cells lined with sawdust, directly under the bark. If not cut far enough down the leader, next year’s adults will emerge and drop down to the mulch, overwinter, and begin another generation to continue deforming the host tree tops and other trees close by. Also, spruce tree trunks can be banded with sticky tape at the base to inhibit migration of adult weevils in fall.

The District of Invermere is taking proactive measures to prune out all WPW and SBR’s from publicly owned spruce, pine and fir trees. It is highly recommended that private homeowners recognize these signs of WPW (dead tops) and SBR (orange brooms) and prune out the affected growths as described or, call a Certified Arborist to perform the task or make recommendations.
